G44: Red Sox 5, Phillies 0

Red Sox - 000 140 000 - 5 9 0
Phillies - 000 000 000 - 0 1 0
Matsuzaka was four outs away from a no-hitter when Juan Castro lifted a little flair into short field. Marco Scutaro could not grab it and it fell for a single. Dice: 8-1-0-4-5, 112.

The hit came right after Adrian Beltre made a phenominal diving catch to his left at third, then got up and fired a bullet to first, doubling off Carlos Ruiz, who had walked. (Matsuzaka snared a smoking liner off the bat of Jayson Werth to end the seventh inning.)

The Sox put the game away with three two-out hits in the fifth -- J.D. Drew's RBI single, David Ortiz's RBI double, and Beltre's 2-RBI double.

Daniel Bard pitched the ninth, getting the Phillies to hit three ground balls to Dustin Pedroia.

The Rays won and the Yankees (now 5 GB) and Blue Jays (now 7 GB) lost. The Red Sox remain 8.5 GB.
Example
Daisuke Matsuzaka / Kyle Kendrick
Ellsbury, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Drew, RF
Ortiz, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Varitek, C
Scutaro, SS
Matsuzaka, P
Jacoby Ellsbury returns to the lineup for the first time since April 11. To make room on the roster, Jonathan Van Every (who is out of options), was designated for assignment and will be exposed to waivers.

Kevin Youkilis has reached base in 21 straight games, but David Ortiz gets the start at first base.

Matsuzaka complained about Victor Martinez's pitch-calling after his last start (PA: "That did not sit well in the clubhouse"), so we'll see how Dice does with Jason Varitek today.

May 22, 1957: The Red Sox set an American League record by hitting four home runs in the sixth inning. Gene Mauch, Ted Williams, Dick Gernert, and Frank Malzone go deep off Cleveland's Cal McLish within a span of 16 pitches. (Williams had helped set the AL record in 1940, with Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, and Jim Tabor.)

May 22, 1977: The Red Sox and Brewers tie a major-league record when they combine for 11 home runs (Lynn (2), Hobson, Evans, Scott, and Yaz for Boston). Evans's blast clears the new upper section of the CF wall, about 20 feet to the right of the flag pole. Boomer's tater is a grand slam. Boston wins 14-10. It's the first game of a doubleheader; the Sox get only two hits in the nightcap and are shutout 6-0.

Doesn't Van Every have one option remaining?

It was first reported that he did, but this ProJo writer says no.

Why are the Phillies giving more at-bats to Placido Polanco than Howard, Utley and Werth? I understand lineups don't matter much over the long haul, but that strikes me as a stupid use of resources.

meunier said...

If they are going to do interleague they should leave the games blank on the schedule except for the regional ones like this. Then fill the schedule a week before it starts using standings.

meunier said...

It works for the NFL to have flex schedules.

meunier said...

Dosn't Dice-K have a .250 BA or something like that?

allan said...

Dice is 0-for-8.

allan said...

Fox?

Fuck.

laura k said...

Welcome back LBJ!!!!

9casey said...

I may get friggin blacked out here.......

9casey said...

no sox tv for me , man that ruins a perfectly good saturday night

laura k said...

MLB Audio doesn't cut it for you, I guess.

allan said...

no, watching on mute.

Kathryn said...

I've got Yankees/Mets on Fox. So I'm blacked out. I hate this stuff. You would think I pay enough to MLB for there to be some way for me to get this game. I pay for both the TV EI package and the MLB TV. But no, I can't get this game because it's on FOX. Well, guess what? It's not on FOX where I live. I do not live in the New York/Boston area, so don't black me out on the computer if my TV station is not showing the game I want to see!

laura k said...

FY! That sounded nice.

Kathryn said...

Yep, sounded great.

laura k said...

no, watching on mute.

I meant 9C. But thanks for sharing. :)

laura k said...

I pay for both the TV EI package and the MLB TV. But no, I can't get this game because it's on FOX.

Wow. I didn't realize that could happen, that you could be blacked out in both. That totally totally sucks!

allan said...

yeah, that makes no sense at all.

mlb sucks.

Kathryn said...

Take up the cause, Allan!

My husband says that Fox pays them more than I do, so we lose. Fox has the exclusive rights.

laura k said...

Yes, Fox does have the exclusive television rights, just like ESPN does on Sunday nights. BUT how can they not make it available on either EI or MLB for people who can't get the game any other way? Their TV exclusivity should have nothing to do with that.

Kathryn said...

I guess that was a good catch?

allan said...

Dice hearts Tek, clearly.

allan said...

is o'brien on the radio today?

Kathryn said...

"Due to MLB exclusivities, live games occurring each Saturday with a scheduled start time after 1:10 PM ET or before 7:05 PM ET and each Sunday with a scheduled start time after 5:00 PM ET will be blacked out in the United States. Live audio of this game is available as part of your MLB.TV."

Maybe I should move to Canada?

meunier said...

game is blacked out on mlb.tv

laura k said...

Yes, O'Brien.

Yes, move to Canada. If you apply now, you can be here by 2013. :)

meunier said...

Guess I was on to something.

laura k said...

Yeah Dice!!

Let's hope he hasn't hurt himself like Brad Penny last night, hitting a GS and throwing his back out.

allan said...

... and then you can access this game in mlb's archives and watch it!

Rob said...

Dice-1B

meunier said...

I wonder if I turn TOR on if I will be able to see the game.

9casey said...

Interleague sucks for so many reasons , but the one i hate the most ,it forces us to leave 3 past all-stars on our bench...

I know so many much bitch about the scheduling , but the fact they play by different rules is absurd..

Kathryn said...

.. and then you can access this game in mlb's archives and watch it!

Ha, thanks to you, A!

My son has a way changing our location with MLB, but he's out tonight.

laura k said...

I know so many much bitch about the scheduling , but the fact they play by different rules is absurd..

That is THE best argument against it, I think. That and the uniqueness of World Series being diluted. I care about those much much more than I do about the schedule.

meunier said...

Ehh I will have to get that info from them next Saturday then.

allan said...

GotRibe: MLBTV doesn't work for you?

allan said...

oh, i see - it's blacked out in the u.s.

9casey said...

Mrs.GotRibe said...

no matter how many times I see this name in my head I always say Mrs. Got-Ribe, never Go-Tribe.

I can't help it

allan said...

i always think rib-eye.

laura k said...

I also see Mrs Got-Ribe!

Kathryn said...

You are supposed to pronounce it Got-Ribe. It's a joke about some promotional hats from 30 years ago. The spacing was off and they looked more like Got Ribe than Go Tribe. My husband took the moniker for another blog and I became Mrs. GotRibe.

laura k said...

Remember this?

I was hoping some media might give it some interest, but no one did and I didn't want to dedicate my life to it.

Kathryn said...

Mets taking it to Hughes..3-0

meunier said...

http://mlbtvblackout.blogspot.com/2009/07/mlbtv-blackout-workaround-bypass.html

meunier said...

That is how to do it but good luck finding a proxy with enough bandwith though.

laura k said...

It's supposed to be Got-Ribe? Go figure. I thought it was jUsT inVEnTive cAps on Go-Tribe.

Kathryn said...

Thanks Meunier, but I think I'll leave it to my son. I would screw something up and miss a big play or something.

allan said...

By the way, it is still not Tribe Time.

Kathryn said...

Papi = Wheels!

allan said...

LOOK OUT - BIG MAN COMIN' THRU!!!!

allan said...

sit down, manuel, you hick.

Kathryn said...

Was he safe?

Kathryn said...

Our kids were known as Little Ribe #1 and Little Ribe #2, but that's probably more than you want to know!

allan said...

Flo? Looked quite safe to me. Replays show he clearly did not leave early.

laura k said...

We know all kinds of trivia and personal tidbits about each other. :)

Kathryn said...

It's really hard to watch one game on TV and listen to a different one on the radio. You kinda lose track of things.

Rob said...

It was a total scheduling fail tonight for MLB and FOX. Red Sox fans in the western two-thirds of Connecticut who get NESN are shit out-of-luck because the FOX affiliates were told to show the Yankees/Mets.

allan said...

i say if dice has to have tek catching, fine.

laura k said...

They got some loud phans in philly.

Kathryn said...

Re Flo: radio was talking about how he just got in under the tag and that it was a surprisingly good call from the ump.

allan said...

MLB: "of course we treat the most loyal fans like absolute shit. so what if they pay $$$$? what other major league baseball games are they going to watch? hahahahha!!..."

allan said...

interesting linescore tonight.

RedSoxDiehard said...

I keep getting Truped by Castig!

laura k said...

yes. the linescore is interesting, but it is very early.

(i know you've been looking since the 1st.)

Kathryn said...

linescore?
Hmmmm.

(I waited until he was out of that inning before posting.)

laura k said...

I will try not to get caught up in the linescore this early.

I leave work at 9 tonight. If it's still "interesting" when I get home, I'll be very interested.

Kathryn said...

L, if it's still interesting when you get home I'll be really PO'd that I am not watching it.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Dice-SH

laura k said...

I'm not watching it either. I'm at work. Plus I miss at least 45 minutes getting home. Things are tough all over. :)

Kathryn said...

Yes, indeed. 45 minutes getting home? Ouch.

Kathryn said...

C'mon Pedey.

allan said...

FKR - 000 21
HOU - 100 00

MFY - 000 00
NYM - 201 0

ARZ - 4

Benjamin said...

Hey asshole announcers, baserunning is distracting to the batter too, not just the pitcher.

laura k said...

45 minutes seems long to get home? Not at all to me. That's only b/c I'm taking public transit. Driving it's about 25-30 minutes. Seems very fast to me, very easy. Plus only 2 days a week. Not bad at all.

Now I must go. See you later!

Kathryn said...

FIRE!

laura k said...

Do most people have less than 30-45 minutes commute to work? Just wondering. Most people I know have at least that or much more.

Bye again. :)

Kathryn said...

Jason Bay at bat, one on one out.

PAPI!!!

allan said...

TIZZLE - GOOD TIMES

Kathryn said...

Around here it's 10- 20 minutes for most people. That's what rural living gets you.

The Northern Virginia commute keeps moving further north. Some people only 30 miles north of me travel over 90 minutes to work in NOVA/DC.

Big Inning! Another 2 out rally.

Kathryn said...

oops, I meant it keeps moving further south.

I've never been too good with directions. :)

allan said...

astros scored a run, trail tb 3-2 in the 7th.

snakes swallowing the jays 6-1 in the 2nd

RedSoxDiehard said...

I'm 22 miles form work - 25 min. off-hours, but 45-60 min on a typical rush-hour commute.

allan said...

dice's era is 6.66 right now.

Kathryn said...

I'm 12 miles from work. About a 17 minute trip on a good day, 20 minutes when college students are in town. There is no rush hour to speak of, just bothersome college traffic. Not too shabby.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Dice through 5 in fine fashion!

allan said...

dice at 77 thru 5.

17-18-15 18-9

meunier said...

I wonder how I can tell which game is on MLB network where I am? Fox is showing LAD-DET since I am on the west coast but I have no idea about MLB network.

Kathryn said...

2 on, 2 outs Cervelli up for Yankees.

allan said...

2 outs - swing for the fences, dice!

Kathryn said...

Off the pitcher for an RBI.

Grant Salzano said...

So, I was going to turn on the Celtics but given the circumstances I think I'll watch this instead.

RedSoxDiehard said...

This poor Bastardo. But at least his parents didn't name him Ubaldo.

Grant Salzano said...

Also the Celtics are WRECKING the Magic already anyway.

9casey said...

Wow Dice looked good in that at-bat.

meunier said...

Rajon Rondo is putting people on posters in the Celtics game.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Nice play by Papi!

allan said...

no fat pussy toad, he.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Dice through 6!

allan said...

Fascinating!

RedSoxDiehard said...

I'm one of those people who doesn't believe in talking about certain things. DO'B is apparently not.

I already muted the TV and put the radio on when the Fox guys kept mocking Papi at first, now I may have to mute the radio. Grrr.

Kathryn said...

They have had no concern about the jinx.

RedSoxDiehard said...

I even avert my eyes from that part of the screen when they put up the score on the way to a commercial.

Kathryn said...

4-1 Mets

Zenslinger said...

What TV is this on? They said they couldn't find it down in The Bar. Given the possibly special situation with this game, I want to fuckin' see it!

allan said...

still 3-2 rays in the bot 8th

allan said...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathryn said...

Sounded great!

Grant Salzano said...

YES!

meunier said...

I think when Dice comes out there will be a double switch with Youk replacing Ortiz

RedSoxDiehard said...

OK, I think we just had our big defensive play!

I also think Tek will be catching again 5 days from now.

allan said...

does that count as the traditional great play that has supposedly has to happen in each one?

Kathryn said...

Dice is not coming out.

allan said...

Just updated L, who is on the bus. She should be home in plenty of time.

meunier said...

No hits allowed by Dice thru 7, holy crap.

Kathryn said...

Radio doing all they can. I am not even going to repeat what they are saying!!

allan said...

dice at 93 thru 7

pc last 3 innings: 9-8-8!

RedSoxDiehard said...

GAH! TV and radio both on mute now.

Kathryn said...

By the way, the fourth Mets run was past a diving Cano.

Grant Salzano said...

Dice is money right now, give him his shot. He's only thrown 93 pitches. Should he keep it up he'll end up with maybe 120-125 ish. That's reasonable, especially for him.

meunier said...

Have the announcers said it yet? In the media after being thru 7 you are allowed to say the phrase.

Grant Salzano said...

I would just like to point out that when I saw the situation I immediately knew that Tek was pitching without looking it up.

Grant Salzano said...

...wow.

Grant Salzano said...

That didn't come off as douchey at all.

Benjamin said...

They just did.

Kathryn said...

Meunier, radio is announcing it every chance they get. That...and more.

RedSoxDiehard said...

What's the pitch count? I guess I'm spoiled now after NESN started showing it on their games.

Grant Salzano said...

I think that if *I* don't say it, the jinx doesn't exist.

Grant Salzano said...

93 pitches for Dice.

meunier said...

ORL 34 BOS 51 at the half in Basketball.

allan said...

scully said it throughout his famous 9th inning broadcast of koufax's perfect game, so ...

someone is always saying it somewhere, yet they happen!

Grant Salzano said...

NESN started doing that after YES did.

allan said...

yook in

ther are many ways to say it, but they should certainly inform the audience.

meunier said...

NOW they said it for the 1st time, and Youk is in at 1st.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Ack! Now this thread is on mute, LOL!

So anyway.......... lovely weather we're having, huh?

Kathryn said...

Fox just said they'd join the game at 2 outs in the 9th if necessary. Thanks a friggin lot!

They showed Papi/Dice-K covering first play. Very nice. I'd like to see the stab by Dice.

allan said...

tito and farrell in the dugout trying to figure out who the fuck this is out on the mound...

Kathryn said...

DP, please

RedSoxDiehard said...

I personally think they shouldn't say anything more than "special game" or something like that. Half the fun is when you notice it on your own.

Radio guys were blathering about it before the 5th was over.

Kathryn said...

Geez oh flip. SHUT UP already.

allan said...

man, that side shot of the liner to dice is wild. smoked!

mrs. g: little consulation now, but the game will be archived. plus mlb will have clips.

allan said...

bard and jeemer up

Kathryn said...

Okay, now the Fox guys at the Mets game are in on it. Showing graphics with dates, etc. QUIT IT.

meunier said...

This would be the first away NH for the AL in interleague play.

allan said...

HOYL DFUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

BEKLTRE!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

WUT WUT WUT WAS THAT!??!?!!! WOW!!!!!

Grant Salzano said...

Well, folks, we might see something special here.

Kathryn said...

Not exactly the DP I was expecting, but sounded great!! DO'B says "absolutely remarkable."

RedSoxDiehard said...

No, THAT was the play!

allan said...

great look on dice's face after the DP: "huh, this defense thing is pretty cool."

Kathryn said...

I will watch the archive. These sound like some great plays. Y'all will have to be my eyes for now.

allan said...

shit.

Kathryn said...

Pisser.

allan said...

thought he had that.

pokey woulda.

meunier said...

Oh well, what a performance though!

Grant Salzano said...

THAT'S the hit?

RedSoxDiehard said...

Wait, that was the first hit? Why didn't somebody say something? >:(

Kathryn said...

That was exciting. Nice job by Dice and the D.

meunier said...

I assume Oki or Bard in the 9th..

allan said...

standing ovation!

that is likely it.

8-1-0-4-5, 112

Kathryn said...

Slappy just grounded out with two outs, men on 2nd & 3rd. 4-1 Mets bottom 7

Grant Salzano said...

What a shit single.

Grant Salzano said...

Gotta look at the big picture though... Dice looked PHENOMENAL.

allan said...

best start of his career, even with the 4 BB.

laura k said...

Got home and ran to the TV, just after the hit went through.

A valiant effort. Good on him!

Grant Salzano said...

He just *looked* amazing. I'm not a huge fan of the eyeball test, but the eyeball test said a lot tonight.

laura k said...

Glad to hear the Phillies fan gave him a standing O. As it should be!

Grant, stop whining, a hit is a hit. :)

Kathryn said...

A--was the standing ovation just from Sox fans or everyone?

Grant Salzano said...

Color me surprised that the Phillies fans did anything classy.

laura k said...

scully said it throughout his famous 9th inning broadcast of koufax's perfect game, so ...

someone is always saying it somewhere, yet they happen!

Shocked to see Allan say this! Mr Don't Mention It himself. But it's true. It's just a fun thing, the no-saying. Doesn't mean anything more than that.

It's fun reading thru the thread.

Gotta go watch Ellsbury bat!

allan said...

the tradition is fun in your personal space, but since we don't believe in curses ....

Grant Salzano said...

Jason Bay with the solid 4-4 evening for the Mets tonight.

allan said...

that's like half of bay's hit total for the year, right?

laura k said...

Standing O from almost everyone. That is baseball tradition!

allan said...

microwave in for on fire

Kathryn said...

I hope it was from everyone, but radio said it was Red Sox fans along the right side.

laura k said...

So who made THE PLAY that we would have looked back on if he had gotten the no-no?

laura k said...

I saw a replay that looked like a lot of ppl were standing.

Grant Salzano said...

Beltre.

laura k said...

Amy in the thread tonight?

allan said...

Scutaro.

laura k said...

Thanks Grant. Sorry about your hockey team. Don't think I've seen you since then.

Kathryn said...

How good was FY's start of the DP in the first? Without that, we would have had none of this excitement.

laura k said...

OK, Grant says Beltre, Allan says Scutaro. Let's say the infield.

laura k said...

That DP sounded great. Somehow early plays never figure in, it's always the plays after the tension has built. But of course the early plays are just as important.

Grant Salzano said...

Heh, I've been home relaxing before graduation which is Monday.

I assume you're talking about the Bruins?

allan said...

oh - K! come on ump.

Kathryn said...

Dice-K stabbed a hot shot.

allan said...

matsuzaka is the lone crap shooter, playing the field every night

RedSoxDiehard said...

I went to D-Lowe's no-no, and at one point we heard the following conversation behind us:

Guy: He's pitching a no-hitter.
(Me: *gasp*)
Girl: What do you mean a no-hitter?
(Me: *gasp*)
Guy: He hasn't given up any hits.
(Me: *gasp*)
Girl: ??? They've hit the ball.
(Me: *keels over*)
Guy: Yeah, but that's not a hit unless they're safe at first.

My mother and I were cringing. (But yeah, it did still happen. One of the most fun games I've ever been to, too.)

allan said...

The water is Muddy!!!

laura k said...

Filthy Water!

Grant Salzano said...

Wow that was a hell of a play by FY.

Rob said...

Poisonous water!

laura k said...

Yes, the Bruins. I didn't know you guys had an alternate team.
