G16: Athletics 5, Red Sox 0

Red Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 5 1
Athletics - 100 000 04x - 5 8 1
Lackey (6-4-1-1-3, 93) pitched very well, but Anderson (8-4-0-1-8, 109) completely shut down the Red Sox. Hideki Okajima, in his 2011 debut, gave up three runs in the eighth (and allowed an inherited runner to score) as Oakland padded its lead.

Boston had only two base runners in the first seven innings; Adrian Gonzalez singled with two outs in the first and he reached first on Anderson's throwing error in the seventh.

In the eighth, David Ortiz singled and Jacoby Ellsbury pinch-ran. Anderson fell behind Mike Cameron 3-0, but battled back to strike him out on a check swing; Ellsbury was running on the full count pitch and beat Kurt Suzuki's throw, but was called out because Cameron stepped in front of Suzuki as the catcher was throwing to second base. With two outs and no one on, Carl Crawford beat out an infield single and Jarrod Saltalamacchia lined a hit to left, but Anderson struck out Darnell McDonald on three pitches to end the threat.

Down by five with one out in the ninth, Dustin Pedroia walked and Gonzalez singled. But Youkilis flied to left and Ellsbury popped to shortstop.

Jed Lowrie went 0-for-4, snapping his seven-game hitting streak.
Example
John Lackey / Brett Anderson

After three consecutive (nearly) stress-free wins over the Blue Jays -- 4-1, 8-1, 9-1 -- the Red Sox are in Oakland for the start of a nine-game road trip that will include stops in Anaheim and Baltimore.

Lefty Anderson has a 2.29 ERA in three starts (19.2 innings), but he can't actually be much good, because his record is 0-1. ... Lackey has been more successful, as he is 1-1. Pay no attention to his 15.58 ERA and .395 opponents batting average; Lackey "pitches to the score" and "knows how to win".

The Red Sox are 0-6 on the road this year, the only major league team with no road victories. They are also 0-3 in one-run games, one of only two teams with no one-run wins (the Orioles are 0-1).

Gordon Edes shares "an absolutely terrifying stat" about Lackey:
He has given up at least six extra-base hits in each of his first two starts, and if that happens again Tuesday night, he will be only the second pitcher in 90 years to do that three times in a row. Danny Graves did it in 2003, and he went 1-13.
Graves (who went 4-15, not 1-13, in 2003*):
0525 vs FLA: 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs (and 4 singles)
0531 vs FLA: 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run (and 3 singles)
0605 vs NYY: 5 doubles, 1 home run (and 2 singles)

Lackey:
0402 vs TEX: 3 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs (and 3 singles)
0408 vs NYY: 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run (and 1 single)

* In comments, Jere notes that Graves went 1-13 from May 25 to the end of the season.
Example
AL East: White Sox/Rays at 6:30 PM; and Twins/Orioles and Yankees/Blue Jays at 7 PM.
Example
THT's Chris Jaffe lists the greatest games by Hall of Famers since 1950, according to WPA. In George Brett's game of May 28, 1979, he almost hit for the cycle in extra innings (single in the 10th, double in the 14th, game-winning home run in the 16th)! Brett did hit for the cycle in the game, however; he had a triple back in the third inning.

Bill Petti, Beyond the Box Score, on the Yankees:
When you look at how they've scored their runs and combine that with how their pitchers have performed it's hard to step back and say objectively that this team is among the elite teams in baseball.

Soxaholix: So has a .333 team evah friggin' looked so worthy of hope? ... You know if you anagram "Jed Lowrie every day", you get "Joy, we dialed revery"?

And from Soxaholix commenter Bob: The Ballad of Jed Lowrie

Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A journeyman pro, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day as his team was getting' booed,
He stepped to the plate and the Fenway crowd he wooed.

Cheers that is ... standing O ... Boston glee.

There's more.

Jere said...

When Edes took that stat from somewhere else, he said it wrong-- Graves was 1-13 through the end of that season including the three straight 6-XBH games.

allan said...

Thanks for that, Jere. Still seems odd to describe it like that.

Lowrie, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Gonzalez, 1B
Youkilis, 3B
Ortiz, DH
Cameron, RF
Crawford, LF
Saltalamacchia, C
McDonald, CF

meunier said...

I will be at the next game.

Jere said...

Asshole Blue Jay swings on 3-0 and kills the rally. 2-2 in the 5th.

allan said...

jays rallying against burnett in the 6th!

allan said...

MFY - 020 002
TOR - 101 001

Jays: 2nd/3rd with 1 out in 6th.

allan said...

Loaded for the Jays, 1 out.

Burnett yanked.

Zenslinger said...

Bases loaded for the hot-hitting Yunel Escobar.

Zenslinger said...

Halladay got shelled.

I should be at the game tonight, but just too much going on. Only chance to see the Sox in the Bay this year, too.

allan said...

fuck the fuckin jays

Jere said...

pissed re: Jays having loaded, one out, down one, and having next two guys K.

Now they'll just have to get to Sturtze/Gordon/Rivera (or whoever they're assuming will pitch 789 every time and automatically get everyone out this year).

allan said...

fat joba takes care of the 7th

meunier said...

Won't be on here much since I live in the market area for this game.

allan said...

NESN and west coast bingo!

allan said...

Won't be on here much since I live in the market area for this game.

It's not on TV?

Zenslinger said...

I've got the game here in San Francisco on CSN.

Jere said...

When are they gonna realize it's not "so strange" anymore because that's how the schedule is now?

allan said...

just thinking that - it's because of interleague, for a start ...

don mentioned AG's "3 game hitting streak"

allan said...

4 GAMES!

Kathryn said...

Good evening all. I was sorry to miss that great game yesterday. My mother and I were in Richmond taking in the Picasso exhibit.

I heard the beginning and end of the game.

That was only a single???

allan said...

it was hit very hard and bert's carrying TWO pianos on his back.

Jere said...

Hard NOT to get a double on balls to the wall in the power alleys. But he found a way.

Pokerwolf said...

Yeah, apparently Evil Bert is already used to Fenway wall balls. The A's OF certainly doesn't like the idea of the Sox running on them today. Wow.

Jere said...

GDGD Q: How to I get the slider bar thing on the "game summary" pitch-by-pitch to stay at the bottom so I'm always seeing the most recent pitch?

Pokerwolf said...

Nice to see Ococ, but I want that first out.

allan said...

just putting it at the bottom at the beginning of an inning does not keep it there?

Zenslinger said...

Ococ in the press recently for his big 'fro.

allan said...

come on lackey, you shit

allan said...

ococ with corn rows?

Pokerwolf said...

Lackey doesn't look relaxed at all. Not good.

Jere said...

I assume you saw Coco's recent Natural.

No I can't get the slider to stay bottom. It always stays right where it is so I have to keep moving it down.

allan said...

orioles and rays won today.

Kathryn said...

With this late start, I'm already on a short leash. And now Lackey is taking forever. I'll try to make it through two.

Pokerwolf said...

That's one heck of a swing!

allan said...

the chin is on 11 days of rest.

Pokerwolf said...

Way to keep that "score at least 1 run in the first inning" streak alive, Lackey.

tim said...

That went significantly better than I had hoped it would.

Patrick said...

Lackey of the crooked number mercifully puts up a little one.

tim said...

err...I should say, better than I EXPECTED it would.

allan said...

don again with the 3-game streak mention (flo)

tim said...

NESN in HD too, still VERY curious how Rogers works this.

tim said...

wtf, afternoon game tomorrow? getaway day already?

Jere said...

bad start for Mo!

allan said...

f-bat? do tell!

Jere said...

Double, ground out, and then he walks Bautista on 4.

Jere said...

And a wild pitch makes it 5-4!

Kathryn said...

And then a wild pitch.

allan said...

"framed by"

go jays go!

Kathryn said...

5-4; bottom 9th; one on, one out for Toronto

Patrick said...

With that out, Lackey's ERA dipped under 14!

allan said...

buck martinez: rah-veer-ah

allan said...

HIT - jays 1st/3rd

Kathryn said...

Now 1st :& 3rd, one out.

tim said...

WOW!!!!!

wicked squeeze!!!!!

Jere said...

SIngle makes it first and third--but I don't see how that guy wasn't on second after the wild pitch. The game could be tied right now!

Jere said...

thank you MO

Kathryn said...

Yeah, we just switched to that game. WOW!

tim said...

I think the wild pitch was on ball 4, jere...I dunno.

allan said...

farrell bringing sox mojo and pwning fruitbat

Kathryn said...

And one of our best-loved phrases was just uttered by my son: "Rivera blew a save."

allan said...

148 jays fans stand as one!!!

tim said...

wonder if they played that shitty "stand up and cheer, TORONTO" crap before the bottom of the 9th.

Patrick said...

Bases loaded!

tim said...

good thing bogar didn't go with farrell, otherwise that would've been an easy gun down at home.

Pokerwolf said...

It says a lot that I'm relieved that Lackey has only given up one run so far.

allan said...

jays cannot squander here ... cannot.

allan said...

let's go, corey!

tim said...

WOW, GDGD has commercials now?!

WOW.

tim said...

fucking idiot patterson. back to NESN.

allan said...

FUCKINJAYS waste check swing

on to the 10th

Patrick said...

CRAP!

Kathryn said...

Stinky.

allan said...

heidi - grey sweater ... hmmm

tim said...

unfortunately, this is the part where the yankees win it against the less-than-stellar jays pen.

tim said...

Jon Rauch's GDGD pic looks so angry.

Pokerwolf said...

Dear Red Sox,

You're not helping yourselves by hacking at anything that Anderson throws at you.

No love,

Me

Kathryn said...

Okay, I'm off to listen in bed.

Dear Lackey,
Don't be sucky.

Thanks,
Your Best Friend Kathryn

allan said...

Lackey, like gods, does not answer letters.

allan said...

still good to see rivera flush an easy save ... stay positive, tim

Patrick said...

Dale Arnold and Castig ripping on the A's defense using errors and fielding percentage as evidence...

tim said...

wonder what happened there and why it wasn't a DP.

Patrick said...

Another chance for the Jays. In the words of Darth Vader:

DO NOT FAIL ME AGAIN!

allan said...

Dale Arnold and Castig ripping on the A's defense using errors and fielding percentage as evidence...

It's like a scientist insisting that the earth is flat...

tim said...

horse shit.

nova in for rivera

Pokerwolf said...

That was some serious BS.

tim said...

No go is in the MFY 'pen now?

I am in a house with a hundred big HD tvs, a million rooms, half a million bathrooms... and no red sox. WTH.

tim said...

L cameo - hey! Enjoy NYC.

meunier said...

Terry was tossed.

laura k said...

Thanks! In a pretty town on the Hudson right now (sister's house), NYC tomorrow. Can't wait.

I saw NYY won (it was on in the bar). Go Sox.

allan said...

damn, i was downstairs and missed the balk.

Pokerwolf said...

Yep. Not allowed to argue balks. He'll watch in the clubhouse and pass on what he thinks should happen from there.

tim said...

In relative terms, Lackey has been absolutely lights out tonight thus far.

Jere said...

"I saw NYY won"

no you didn't!

allan said...

snorts/giggles!

allan said...

i hope she's not watching one of them there future tvs.

allan said...

shemp K

Pokerwolf said...

I can't believe I'm writing this one, but LACKEY OTT!

Jere said...

ha, i was gonna go for a similar "was the bar called 2121" type joke...

tim said...

they have the live feed in NY, we're on a delay here in canada, our tubes aren't up to US standard so it takes longer for the feed to propagate to our receptors...or something.

Patrick said...

GAME!!!! GO JOHN FARRELL1!!!@@

AHHHHHHHHHHH

tim said...

jays WIN! Snyder walkoff double.

laura k said...

I didn't? Seriously, what? Jays came back? I was watching in a time warp? Someone fill me in pls.

Jere said...

JAYS WIN! Future altered!

Patrick said...

The bounce on Snider's ball was inches from being a ground rule double

laura k said...

OK... the guy who said they hung on to win was an idiot. Final score? I will text my sister in the next room.

tim said...

silly L. thinks that fruitbat = automatic save.

rivera gave up a couple runs in the 9th and jays just won it in 10.

allan said...

chevy nova for the loss.

everyone else gained ground on the mfy. now we have to, too.

Jere said...

the guy made the mistake of assuming Mariano = win. would be my guess.

allan said...

nah, she was probably semi-drunk and saw the mets on BBTN or something.

allan said...

though - do the mets win anymore?

meunier said...

Looks like we are going to be shut out.

laura k said...

Nope - guy sees YES programming, sees no game, says game is over - they must have won. But it wasn't on YES, it was on 9. Ha ha ha.

Shoulda stayed at the bar longer, I would have been the only one cheering. :)

tim said...

I take it back, L. Didn't realize you were misinformed.

Of course you would know from a few years back that fruitbat CAN blow games, especially on back to back nights in October.

RedSoxDiehard said...

At least it's impossible to fall asleep over the din of vuvuzelas.
(Or is that the bad news?)

allan said...

yes, that is exactly what it looks like.

laura k said...

"nah, she was probably semi-drunk and saw the mets on BBTN or something."

oh fuck you i am semi-drunk but know the diff btn METS and YANKEES !! :)

losers and losers

but i can tell them apart

laura k said...

"Looks like we are going to be shut out."

what inning is it?

tim said...

all this excitement over the yankees loss has made me miss this unexpected pitchers' duel we have going on here.

runs pls!

allan said...

oh fuck you

banned.

tim said...

You'll probably think I'm full of shit, but bottom of the 5th.

only 1-0 oakland

laura k said...

banned! whoo-hoo!!

tim said...

lackey regaining his form.

allan said...

yeah, he looked out of sync retiring those 8 guys in a row ...

allan said...

one day i think an 11 am start is the best -- you still have most of the afternoon and evening free -- then i think a 10 pm start is ideal -- do stuff all day, then it's game time late!

Patrick said...

"call it coincidence if you will, but have you seen how well the Rays have played since Manny Ramirez retired" -Dale Arnold, quickly losing my respect

Pokerwolf said...

STRAND A PAIR.

tim said...

As strand a pair.

Jere said...

lil 'ice cream cococone there, but it stays in.

nick said...

Arnold is a putz. just the sound of his voice irritates me. Then you add some stupid like that and...

allan said...

i guess manny secretly joined the orioles, since they lost 7 in a row. (and he was on the sox for the first six games this year.)

dale arnold needs to have his mouth sewed shut.

allan said...

this slow foxwoods commercial makes me want to commit murder ...

laura k said...

one day i think an 11 am start is the best -- you still have most of the afternoon and evening free -- then i think a 10 pm start is ideal -- do stuff all day, then it's game time late!

And then you realize L is not home and you have to get up to take care of Tala, and you think, why did I think 10 pm starts were good?

tim said...

i don't mind the 10pm starts, theres enough stuff to do until 10 most nights.

problem is getting through 9 innings, but at this rate, should be easy. although i have a feeling this one is going to get stretched out until 1 am once we get into the pens.

laura k said...

Ugh @ Dale Arnold

tim said...

MANNY IS A CLUBHOUSE CANCER

Jere said...

Dale Arnold went from just "meh" to "strongly disliked" by me real fast. Then I stopped listening to Boston sports radio entirely. (But I smirked a little when I heard he lost his daily gig.)

allan said...

when we listened to weei for the jays game last friday, arnold could NOT shut up .... i heard nothing to like.

come on, jed!!

Jere said...

(BTW, I was referring to Dale as talk show host, I forgot he fills in on broadcasts sometimes...can't WAIT till I have to hear that ass call a game again....)

Pokerwolf said...

Man, kind of hard to get something started against a locked in pitcher. Yeesh.

allan said...

shemp - a DH with a .246 OBP!

allan said...

jenks up too - looks like lack is done.

Jere said...

Oh that is awesome. Pitcher HAS to know he could have RUN to first and got Adrian....

Pokerwolf said...

Fuckin DP!!! Dammit, Youk!

tim said...

haha pokerwolf, remy: "and the red sox catch a break"

allan said...

death.

Jere said...

Great fuckin job Youk

meunier said...

OAK announcers saying that the ball hangs up at night in the stadium.

tim said...

Sox not pushing their luck with Lackey, good call.

I'm very much satisfied with that performance.

tim said...

lol, in and out burgers! man, i HAVE to go there now.

allan said...

in & out burger!!!

allan said...

remy has never had in/out?!?!?

i fell in love with them last summer...

Jere said...

allan said...

Pokerwolf said...

Nice plug for Chipotle there.

Pokerwolf said...

Wheeler! Nice!

Jere said...

I think he was talking about the stuff, not the restaurant.

Patrick said...

This game is moving along way too quickly.

RedSoxDiehard said...

This game does not please me.

laura k said...

Jere, how do most ppl pronounce chipotle?

meunier said...

I can't stand that burger place I don't like the sauce and the freeperness of the company.

RedSoxDiehard said...
