G19: Red Sox 4, Angels 3

Red Sox - 001 201 000 - 4 5 0
Angels - 000 000 120 - 3 9 2
Lester (6-4-0-2-8, 111) escaped jams in the second and third innings, and outdueled Haren (6-5-4-3-6, 109). Boston has won six of its last seven games, and is 3.5 GB the Yankees (and only one game out of second place).

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-bagger with one out in the third and, with two outs, Jacoby Ellsbury doubled him home. With two outs in the fourth, Haren walked Jed Lowrie and allowed a double to J.D. Drew. Both runners scored when center fielder Peter Bourjos dropped and kicked Carl Crawford's routine pop fly to short right-center.

In the sixth, Lowrie doubled to left and kept running to third when Vernon Wells bobbled the ball on the warning track. Drew quickly knocked Lowrie in with a single, the only one of Boston's five hits that was not a double.

Matt Albers allowed a two-out run in the seventh and Bobby Jenks started the eighth by giving up a double to Howie Kendrick and an RBI single to Bobby Abreu. Abreu took second on a wild pitch and then advanced two bases on a passed ball (Salty had absolutely no idea where it went), crossing the plate unmolested, cutting the Sox's lead to 4-3. Jenks walked Albertio Callaspo, but then recorded the third out.

Hank Conger singled with one out in the ninth against Jonathan Papelbon, but the Boston closer retired Bourjos on an 0-2 fly to right and struck out Kendrick on three pitches.
Example
Jon Lester / Dan Haren

Boston Starters
Games 1-12 - 6.71 ERA
Games 13-18 - 1.37 ERA
Haren has walked only two batters in 31 innings, while striking out 27 (1.16 ERA, 0.645 WHIP). Righties are batting .179 against him and lefties are at .155; on-base percentages for both groups are also below .200. He and Jered Weaver (who pitched on Wednesday and will miss this series) are dominating the AL Pitchers leaderboard so far this year.

Happy 52nd birthday to Terry Francona!

Two other April 22 anniversaries: 1876 - In the first National League game ever played, the Boston Red Caps beat the Philadelphia Athletics 6-5. ... 1914 - Babe Ruth, age 19, plays his first professional game, pitching a 6-0 for the Baltimore Orioles over the Buffalo Bisons.

AL East: Yankees/Orioles and Rays/Blue Jays at 7 PM.

Tim: Reggae is not my bag, so I cannot offer an opinion.

allan said...

For "Earth Day" - Listen to me! I'm from the bush!

I like this.

tim said...

Oh, its reggae. I had no idea, I just knew it had something to do with Keef. Yeah, I do enjoy reggae, just not particularly his.

That Warumpi band...that's the only song I've heard by them, but it has a sweet rhythm. They are (or at least the lead singer is) aboriginals from Australia.

Jere said...

What the Buck?

tim said...

I say that every time I hear an anthem.

allan said...

Here's a shocker: I'd abolish playing the anthem before all games.

allan said...

Amy said...

Hello, JOSers. I give you folks credit for staying up through the game last night. I doubt I will make it more than an hour, but want to see some baseball!

meunier said...

Why are they wearing the 1980's uniform ?

allan said...

as far as EI feeds, i have been told they get what they get and they pass it along. i also was told that it is almost always the home team feed -- though i have plenty of evidence that is not true.

tim said...

i like those angels unis

allan said...

i was yawning like crazy at 8:30 or so, but i have a second wind of sorts.

tim said...

That's also what I've been told, but clearly its what the CSRs have been told to say by rogers brass...pure BS.

I plan on telling them that its not true.

Kathryn said...

I have been tired all day. I'm not long for this one tonight.

We finally ditched Comcast a few weeks ago. We just got tired of the pathetic customer service and the myriad of lies.

We now have Dish Network, with a minimum number of channels, and are saving about $80 a month.

NICE OTT!!!!!

As in KKK.

Jere said...

we're off to see the wizard, the grand wizard of OTT

Answer to my earlier quiz: If Sox win and Padres lose, all 5 other divisions will have a team with a worse record than the Red Sox.

We need these small victories after 2-10.

Thanks A. I love the civics/humanities lessons I get here.

Hi everyone. My first game thread of the year. Figures, the Sox are on the west coast, and I am on the east coast.

Amy said...

Good timing there, Allan, re the perfect game. :)

Amy said...

Where are you, Rick? Are you living on Pacific Time while here?

Amy said...

Safe!

allan said...

fuck - what a cannon!

Jere said...

that wasn't the ball that got away

Amy said...

What was that on the field?

Jere said...

still close enough for scioscia to just shut the fuck up for ONCE

allan said...

the ol' spit out your mouthguard as you slide head first into the bases and fool the umpire into thinking the fielder did not catch the ball trick!

tim said...

runs!!!!! LBJ!

Amy said...

Heh, we score first. YAY!

Amy said...

LOL, his mouthgard? Fooled me!

Amy said...

Scioscia still yammering.

Kathryn said...

LBJ! And we have the lead.

Jere said...

My gf calls Scioscia "Rush Limbaugh" based on looks. But also, he can make thousands of people think the way he does even when he's wrong just by repeating it over and over loudly.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

I'm in Atlanta. Switching between AtBat and JoS on the iPad. Probably up until midnight at best - have been here too long, no longerbon Pacific time.

Kathryn said...

Scioscia still jawing. It was a close play at third. The thumb guard was distracting enough to draw the umpire's attention away. I think he would have been called out if not for that.

Kathryn said...

The magic thumb guard?

Kathryn said...

I guess Salty is okay.

Jere said...

It was actually the right move by Salt--he was clenching the thumb guard as not to jam any fingers, but when he slid head first (clearly holding something didn't make him think to slide feet first), he had to release the thing to extend the fingers to the bag.

Kathryn said...

I'm fading. It's about time for me to head to bed. I'll stay awake as long as I can listening to WEEI.

Good night everyone. If it's another 2 am game, I hope we win for all of you who stay up!

Amy said...

I am giving myself one more half inning, and then I too will be turning in.

When do we return to Eastern Time games? (Sorry, Rick.)

allan said...

eyelids are heavy, may need some tea...

allan said...

3rd out, pls

allan said...

come on ump - you blind fuck

Jere said...

"gonna get some bad news"

tim said...

abreu "gets the bad news" - count it!

Kathryn said...

I know they let that one go, but is there any team in baseball that is not going to test our catcher's arms this year?

Benjamin said...

Phew.

allan said...

there are free bases -- everyone will go. esp. if we never throw down.

Jere said...

Here's where they fucked up on the Angels' retro unis-- the 80s Angels jersey used the vertical arching on the names on the back. The ones tonight have the radial arching.

How's THAT for a civics lesson? :)

Kathryn said...

How's THAT for a civics lesson? :)

Pretty good. I always did learn things better if they were related to sports.

Jere said...

These radial-arched jerseys make them look like the Naked Gun version of the Angels.

Amy said...

Yes!

allan said...

FIRE!

Jere said...

all ya need's a bingle CC

Amy said...

Damn, I thought he had that one fair.

Amy said...

WOW! They actually dropped it??

Jere said...

I LIKE IT

Jere said...

I blame TOrii! Hahahhaha

Patrick said...

Just stopping in to say

BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHH AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHH HHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Kathryn said...

Whoo hoo. How does that happen??

Amy said...

Just "gorgeous."

allan said...

all of this started with 2 outs, no one on.

Amy said...

That was a real Little League play. Tho I am sure SoSock's kids play better.

Jere said...

ok i've been avoiding saying this because it's not the worst thing in the world, but NESN is so horrible at showing pick off throws. They're always caught off guard by it, and we're left with a close up of someone looking toward first. One of these days, the guy's gonna be out and they're gonna miss it. And I'll be pissed.

Amy said...

If nothing else, Salty is tiring out Haren.

tim said...

Well, as long as his EARNED RUNS don't go up...he pitches to the game.

allan said...

around 40 pitches this inning

tim said...

CALICRAWFORD!

Jere said...

that pitch looked strikey

Kathryn said...

Yeah, but he's tiring me out, too.

allan said...

jere - it sure did

tim said...

And regular salty. not kosher at all.

Amy said...

OK, good night. Keep the lead. I hope to wake up to a W in the morning.

Kathryn said...

Okay, good night for real.

Nice lead. Let's keep it.

allan said...

JED!

Patrick said...

Lead off triples are hot sexy!

Jere said...

second base is confusing us today

Jere said...

wait--Remy saying triple all the way--did you see him clearly bobble it leading Jed to go for third?? hellooo

allan said...

plus LAA TV saying it was a double/E7

Jere said...

Remy very stubborn about this. Replay just proved him wrong again! You see Lowrie slow up then speed up when he sees the bobble, but Remy saying he's refusing to change it in his own scorecard, says Jed had no intention of stopping.

tim said...

fiyah!

yup, NESN also saying the same (double+E) which makes sense.

allan said...

remy: pls don't be like morgan and mccarver, who never change their minds even when presented with a mountain of evidence

allan said...

NESN - Accuracy Is Overrated

tim said...

NESN just showed COL breaking up a FLA no-no in the 9th.

yet COL had 1 run on the highlights. hmm.

Patrick said...

I can't wait until we get our new hundred million dollar player Carl Crawford. I heard he's pretty good.

tim said...

walk, passed ball, advance to 3rd on a ground out, score on a missed catch K - top of the first.

makes sense.

Jere said...

that was so weird, because it was the type of ball that's always a double. So as soon as he bobbled it and you saw Jed going for 3, you KNEW he was doing it BECAUSE of the bobble. Yet Remy was anti-error from the start, and even when the replay showed the brief slow-up by Jed as he approached second, he wouldn't change his mind. And the fact that Don was still calling in an "apparent" bobble before the first replay tells me these guys just don't see stuff the first time that we see on our screens. (which is understandable but you'd think they'd believe what the monitor shows them on replay when it differs from their memory of the play)

Jere said...

solid hustle, wells

Patrick said...

I'm feeling really comfortable about this game, and I like it.

tim said...

fuck sakes don.

stop calling him "rodriguez"

allan said...

that swing looked really late

Patrick said...

That sour comment I made about Crawford again Re:Gonzalez.

Jere said...

ha, I was hoping Don's audio issues would lead to a laugh attack--it took a while, but here it comes...

tim said...

top-notch analysis from nesn re: basketball

Johnny (Mathis) got his (ball past) (Petey) Gunn.

Jere said...

Padres lost! We have to hold on.

Jere said...

some clown from the SIXties, man!

This pitcher's dad was freakin' Bozo!!!

Jere said...

grandfather, not dad

Jere said...

what kind of a clown name is Eric???

Jere said...

I can't believe this clown is walking Salty.

Jere said...

Did you see Salty's slide? He clearly doesn't know how to slide feet first. That must be why he's holding the thumb guard as training wheels. He tried the feet first there and failed miserably. Imagine that, a ballplayer who can't throw, hit, or slide. Getting walked by a child actor grandson of a clown.

Jere said...

"A ball? I'm Bobby Abreu!"

Jere said...

I mean, "A strike...." You know what I meant.

meunier said...

You suck Jenks

Jere said...

Looked like a swing but NESN gave no replay.

Jere said...

TORII WITH THE BAT FLIP. I love it.

meunier said...

Salty really shouldn't be wearing a bible verse on his protector, you can't display one in the stands.

Jere said...

Are they really gonna go from Bozo the Clown to Henry David Thoreau?

allan said...

oh holy hell ...........

meunier said...

OMG YOU IDIOT

Jere said...

You telling me John 3:16 is no longer allowed? That used to be a staple. When did they change that?

Oh my fuckin god! When someone's pointing behind you, you look behind you! ANd run back there!
