G22: Orioles 4, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 100 000 - 1 6 0
Orioles - 011 010 10x - 4 12 1
Boston could get nothing going against Britton (6-5-1-2-2, 94) and two relievers, while the Orioles chipped away at Buchholz (6.2-12-4-2-5, 104), getting at least one runner on base in every inning and scoring three of their four runs on sacrifice flies.

Buchholz set a career-high for hits allowed. He had allowed 10 hits to the Tigers on May 7, 2008 (I was at that game!), and given up nine hits on four other occasions, including twice to the Yankees last season.

Dustin Pedroia singled to start the fourth. He took second on Adrian Gonzalez's grounder, stole third, and scored on Kevin Youkilis's fly ball. With two outs in the fifth, Jason Varitek singled, Jacoby Ellsbury doubled, and Pedroia walked, loading the bases. Gonzalez grounded to second.

Gonzalez doubled to open the eighth, but he was stranded there as Yook popped to first and David Ortiz and Jed Lowrie struck out.

The White Sox edged the Yankees 3-2, so Boston remains 3 GB.
Example
Clay Buchholz / Zach Britton

Britton, a 23-year-old left-hander, made his major league debut on April 3. This is his fifth start.

After beginning the season 6-1, the Orioles have lost 11 of their last 13 games. Baltimore has scored more than three runs in only four of those 13 games and they have a team OBP of .287, only .001 better than AL-worst Tampa Bay.

The Yankees were shut out last night, so Boston is 3 GB.

AL East: White Sox/Yankees at 7 PM; Blue Jays/Rangers and Rays/Twins at 8 PM.

"NESN plus" for NESN people tonight. Can't wait for hockey to end. (Or for NESN to decide that April baseball is more important than playoff hockey.)

FenFan said...

Actually, being a Bruins fan, I'm fine with April baseball being regulated to NESN Plus except that Verizon FiOS does not have that station in HD. :-(

(I know, picking the Bruins over the Sox is blasphemous here but that's that!) ;-)

allan said...

MASN - going to the radio so I will not know if Gary Thorne spews more bullshit about Schilling's sock. :>)

I do know he will spew a lot of shit in general tonight.

Jere said...

"except that Verizon FiOS does not have that station in HD. "

I also have Fios, this is the real reason I'm pissed. (Though if it was in HD, please note I'd still be pissed in principal being second banana to hockey.)

Jere said...

Pedroia shocked by the O's fans saying "oh" at that part in the anthem. Hey, he only plays like 9-10 games a year there....

allan said...

1/2 listening to joe - did he just say "zach greinke"?

Jere said...

short LF fence, Adrian

Kathryn said...

Wow, I'm not blacked out. I thought sure mlb.tv would not let me have the game since I'm supposedly in the Baltimore viewing area.

Great!

meunier said...

OMG classic stuff going on in the Bruins-Habs game.

laura k said...

(I know, picking the Bruins over the Sox is blasphemous here but that's that!) ;-)

Maybe blasphemous (although I don't think so) but the choice of many JoSers.

laura k said...

I'd naturally prefer to see the Habs win - Canadian, and I wouldn't have to hear about hockey during baseball games anymore. But it's not like I'm invested either way.

meunier said...

A quick whistle canceling a Habs goal led to rubber chickens on the ice and more.

Jere said...

So people bring rubber chickens just in case?

allan said...

waffles > rubber chix

Amy said...

Good evening! So do we know yet whether Diego is a Sox fan?

Amy said...

Is anyone else having audio issues with NESN Plus?

meunier said...

GDGD does not says if that was a DP or not.

Amy said...

Never mind--audio okay now.

laura k said...

Diego is obviously a Padres fan! :)

Amy said...

Padres fan--- :)

Kathryn said...

Padres=Father=Papi=Red Sox. So yes, Diego could be a Sox fan.

laura k said...

We always said Cody was a Mets fan, since she was found under the 7 train in Jackson Heights.

Tala doesn't care much about baseball, but she follows the UConn Huskies.

Clyde came from the Bronx, but she was daddy's little girl, so... Sox.

allan said...

he is slowly realizing the padres are too militaristic, so he is thinking seriously about switching...

laura k said...

But his name's not Padre, it's Diego! :)

He can have his own team, it's ok.

Amy said...

My pets are all Sox fans. They were all born here in Massachusetts.

laura k said...

Poor H, all alone. ;)

meunier said...

Wow what an AB

Amy said...

OK, the audio is again on the fritz. Going in and out. Is it Charter or NESNPlus? Anyone else watching NESN Plus?

Amy said...

H enjoys his exclusive status as a NYY fan. He loves provoking New Englanders with his contrariness.

laura k said...

Oh yes, that attitude is very familiar to me.

meunier said...

HH wins the battle

Kathryn said...

That stinks!

laura k said...

Kathryn as The Critic :)

Amy said...

On a related note, I have another NYY fan friend (a side effect of being from NY originally) who has been sending me her negative feelings about Manny.

I need some ammunition to respond to her comments---e.g., re Manny's fake knee injury, Manny getting voted out by his teammates in LA and CHI, throwing the travel secretary on the ground, etc. Any good sources that tell the other side?

DAMN WTF?

meunier said...

dammit

allan said...

Amy: There is the link about Manny's knee(s) in the "important" section on the right.

Kathryn said...

L, I had to look up The Critic to figure out what you were talking about. Thanks, Wikipedia.

Hey, Lackey has been pitching well so I have a lot of criticisms stored up!

Amy said...

Thanks, Allan. I will check it out. I knew you had some stuff here somewhere. :)

This was all provoked by the article in today's NYTimes about Manny.

Amy said...

OK, good. Just one run!

allan said...

no idea about non-sox manny stuff. neither manny nor mcccormick has spoken publicly, so we don't know what actually happen.

p.s.: tell your friend to eff off.

laura k said...

during lackey's great start on sunday, i was thinking, how will kat hate this??? :)

Kathryn said...

HHoudini minus 1

allan said...

P.S. Manny has not played for the Red Sox since JULY 2008!!!!!

Is this person afraid to talk about anything Sox-related in the last 3 years?

If this person wants to re-hash the past, bring up 2004.

laura k said...

"Throwing traveling secretary on the ground" sounds like it's confused with Pedro vs Zimmer! I don't remember hearing Manny threw anyone on the ground. I thought it was pushed or shoved or words to that effect.

Kathryn said...

Well I couldn't watch on Sunday (family Easter stuff), but my son managed to get the iPhone going for part of the meal. Anyway, maybe that's the answer--I am not allowed to watch Lackey pitch.

allan said...

no, he put the guy in a wood chipper. tony mazz told me so.

laura k said...

I figured it was Easter-related.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Amy, I'm on NESN+ (with Comcast), and my audio keeps cutting out too.

Amy said...

That was too fast an inning.

Amy said...

I am inclined not to engage further in the debate with her. My last email said that she was not going to change my opinion, that I was not judging Manny as a person but as a ballplayer, and that all ballplayers (like all people) have their flaws.

She responded one more time with the crap I mentioned, but I think I am tired of the debate.

She's a crazy Yankee fan. Great person. I seem to find those. :)

Amy said...

Thanks, Diehard. We have muted it, driving us NUTS. But I may have to stop threading because I can't follow the game while typing without sound.

laura k said...

Aw come on, you could still correct her version of the facts. At least send a JoS post or two...? :)

Amy said...

Yeah, I may send her Allan's post on the knee story, but then I have to continue to debate it all with her. Maybe Allan would like to?? He has a better handle on all the facts than my Swiss cheese brain does. :)

Amy said...

Damn, I just said, "Remember when he was really scary?" and then he got a hit.

laura k said...

John Rish called Vlad a "hitting machine". Not anymore. Although he is a swinging machine.

allan said...

castig has twice mentioned a 5-pitch first inning by clay

he threw 7 pitches.

allan said...

dp pls

laura k said...

PD!

meunier said...

Finally a hit!

laura k said...

FY theft!

Amy said...

YOUK!

laura k said...

sweat power

meunier said...

youk

laura k said...

my apologies to john rish. all these moronic comments tonight are from dale arnold. figures.

meunier said...

Who the heck is Andino?

allan said...

arnold calls tiz's hit to roberts a "can of corn ground ball"

***

wieters hits a single that takes "3 lazy hops" to drew; then andino hits a "lazy" fly to drew

is he hinting that drew is lazy?

allan said...

Andino is playing shortstop for the Orioles tonight.

Amy said...

OMG, FY!! You are amazing!!

laura k said...

Nice play!!!

Kathryn said...

FY!!!!! How does he do that???

Amy said...

YEAH--TEK!!

Kathryn said...

A Hit! A Hit!

Amy said...

All right! LBJ!

laura k said...

Yeah, and an LBJ double. Cool!

Amy said...

Let's have a two out rally, please.

Kathryn said...

LBJ! Keep it going, FY

Replay just showed that LBJ was sliding into second before Tek got to third.

Amy said...

Bases loaded!

Patrick said...

DO SOMETHING GONZALEZ! PLEASE!

Patrick said...

I heard Gonzalez was a good hitter...

Kathryn said...

Time for an EB granny?

Jere said...

"OK, the audio is again on the fritz. Going in and out."

I have Verizon and it was driving me nuts before--first two innings. Was gonna mention it but figured I'd met my complaint quota by that point.

Amy said...

Come on---do not leave them on base.

Amy said...

arggghhh

Patrick said...

Guy's on base to hit 6HRs

laura k said...

And the Red Sox strand a pair and a half...

Patrick said...

on pace*

shit

Kathryn said...

Well, that stinks!

Jere said...

That could have gotten past CC. Then Vlad would have had...still a single.

Kathryn said...

I think I figured out why I'm not blacked out. mlb.tv takes my location from my zip code associated with my IP address. The local comcast office is in a zip code that was added maybe five years ago. It appears they don't know that zip code. If I put in my zip code, it says I am blacked out. Maybe they won't figure this one out.

C'mon HH stay on the bag.

johngoldfine said...

I always seem to come in at these bad moments.

Kathryn said...

Too many hits.

allan said...

Too many runs.

Kathryn said...

Yeah, but two of those runs off of scrotum flies. If not for the measly hits, there would have been nobody on third.

allan said...

Yeah, but two of those runs off of scrotum flies. If not for the measly hits, there would have been nobody on third.

Did Lackey hack Kathryn's account?

Patrick said...

I didn't think HH would be our worst pitcher to this point, but he's definitely felt like it after Lackey and Dice-K's back to back good starts.

Patrick said...

Lowrie is due. That he doesn't have a hit already is unfathomable.

Amy said...

I miss the Angels' outfielders.

Jere said...

This Britton ain't so Great. Wale away!

Kathryn said...

LOL at Allan.

Amy said...

Well, people did say HH pitched better than expected last year so maybe he has just returned to his expected potential?

Patrick said...

"and the red sox strand a pair"

laura k said...

Why is everyone acting like Buchholz is getting shelled? It's only 3-1.

Kathryn said...

I don't like the nine hits.

allan said...

handshakes in the balt dugout suggest that britton is done.

Kathryn said...

He looks about 18. How old is he?

Patrick said...

Why is everyone acting like Buchholz is getting shelled? It's only 3-1.

It's the Orioles, and the starting pitching has been outstanding the past week.

But thanks for bringing me back to earth.

laura k said...

It doesn't have to be pretty. A pitcher allowing hits but not allowing runners to score can be a gutsy performance.

Kathryn said...

We drove by Camden the other weekend. It really is a pretty park, from the outside and inside.

laura k said...

Patrick, you do seem a tad negative tonight. :)

Kathryn said...

Where was that? Looked like a strike.

Amy said...

I wasn't suggesting that HH was getting shelled, just saying his pitching generally has not been as solid as last season. He seems to give up a lot more hits, if not total runs.

Kathryn said...

He's 24.

laura k said...

It's a beautiful park, but a terrible baseball experience. Excruciatingly loud "music" blasting all the time. The worst park I've been to for that.

Amy said...

Of course, my view is colored by seeing him get shelled by the Yankees at Fenway a few weeks back.

Kathryn said...

It seems that a lot of parks have gone crazy with the music. I remember having a tough time talking to my son during a game at Fenway last year (and they are probably on the tamer end).

laura k said...

It's a huge reason we stopped going to games at Yankee Stadium. It's been this way for at least 10 years. You'd have to scream to talk to the person sitting right next to you. Really really bothers me.

Patrick said...

I strongly agree about the stadium music. I don't know why they feel it's necessary, but it really takes away the 'America's passtime' laid back appeal.

Jere said...

Well if it makes you feel better, Clay had given up 40 hits over his first 35.1 innings last year, which is right around 10 hits per 9 innings, which is around what he is now in 2011. Last year he ended up way down at 7.4 H/9, so hopefully he can do something close to that again.

laura k said...

Yup. Ads and games on the scoreboard constantly - constant noise - because we all have to be "entertained" every second. Can't just sit and watch the game, it's not enough.

This. Drives. Me. Nuts.

Kathryn said...

Hey, hey, hey warming up.

laura k said...

Now that I think about it, change that 10 years to at least 15, probably closer to 20.

Kathryn said...

& Jeemer.

Amy said...

Thanks, Jere. It's funny how perspective changes how you see things!

Amy said...

Nice try, Drew.

laura k said...

Dale Arnold: "...and the orioles can pretty much salt this one away..."

FUCK YOU

Edward Lee said...

Eric Hinske woulda snagged that, done a face plant and would go on to jack a 3-run HR the next inning. Drew just doesn't care.

laura k said...

Ha ha, Hinske.

laura k said...

I like the whole "if Drew cared" thing. I always get a chuckle out of it, never gets old.

laura k said...

Gary Thorne vs Dale Arnold. Who is the LOTE???

Amy said...

SCORE RUNS PLEASE

Kathryn said...

Come back time.

laura k said...

Yes! Comeback time!

Patrick said...

What they said. RUNS!

Amy said...

That's a start!

allan said...

nice hacking, yook-mar.

Amy said...

Shit

Amy said...

Time for Lowrie to hit.

Amy said...

Yook-mar? As in Nomar? What's the parallel?

laura k said...

Impatient hacking

laura k said...

bah

Kathryn said...

That was some impressive pitching. Yikes.

Jere said...

Yay HD! This should turn the game around......

Kathryn said...

Does it look like Albers has an exceptionally long windup on his delivery?

meunier said...

Bruins lose, here comes another Claude Choke Job.

allan said...

dear sox: now is the time for that rally.

laura k said...

If Drew cared, he'd tie the game right now.

Amy said...

OK, we have to lose SOME games. But it would have been nice to have reached .500 tonight...

meunier said...

I can see thru this water.

Amy said...

Clean Baltimore water. Sigh.

Good night, everyone.

laura k said...

Clean. Oh well. Tomorrow.

Kathryn said...

Yuk, clean. Let's get 'em tomorrow.

Jere said...

Hope the White Sox can hang on--Yanks have tying/winning runs on base, bottom 9, one out.

Jere said...

MLBNetwork showing the Yanks feed. The empty seats are on their feet in the Bronx.

Jere said...

what a catch!!!! Lillebridge saves the game! 2 outs.

Jere said...

oh my god!!!!Lillebridge makes a SECOND amazing catch to win the game!! holy shit
