G48: Red Sox 4, Cleveland 2

Red Sox - 002 000 200 - 4 5 0
Spiders - 010 000 001 - 2 6 1
Palindromic dirty water!

Jason Varitek's two-run homer in the seventh gave Beckett (6.2-5-1-3-6, 111) a cushion and helped the Red Sox move into second place in the AL East.

Beckett had only one 1-2-3 inning, but except for the run that scored in the second, he allowed only two Cleveland runners to advance past first base.

In the Boston third, Carl Crawford was hit by a pitch and stole second. After Drew Sutton moved Crawford to third with a ground out, Jacoby Ellsbury walked and stole second. Jed Lowrie's sacrifice fly scored Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez's double scored Ellsbury.

David Ortiz doubled twice and was on base when Varitek hit his first dong since May 30, 2010.

The Yankees scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings to beat the Blue Jays 5-4 and the Tigers beat the Rays 7-6, so the Red Sox (26-22) moved into second place, 0.5 GB New York (26-21), with Tampa Bay (26-23) 1 GB and Toronto 2.5 GB.
Example
Josh Beckett / Fausto Carmona

Beckett, in four May starts: 0.39 ERA, 23.1 innings, 16 hits, 5 walks, 20 strikeouts, opponents (Angels, Twins, Yankees, Tigers) hitting .195/.267/.195. He left his last start with a sore neck.

Beckett lost to Cleveland in his first start of the season (April 5, 5-5-3-4-4, 106). Carmona threw seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks, against Boston on April 7.

Adrian Gonzalez is the fourth Red Sox player since 1920 to have 65+ hits and 40+ RBIs through the team's first 46 games of the season.
YEAR HITS RBI AVG OBP SLG OPS
Ted Williams 1948 65 48 .387 .528 .696 1.224
Jim Rice 1978 67 50 .347 .396 .705 1.101
Manny Ramirez 2001 71 56 401 .483 .740 1.223
Adrian Gonzalez 2011 65 41 .342 .391 .574 .965
Gonzalez got a big boost by going 10-for-15 series against the Cubs. (He and Manny did it in their first seasons in Boston.)

AL East: Blue Jays/Yankees and Rays/Tigers at 7 PM.

From there, Lackey will pitch in a minor-league rehab game on May 31 and is tentatively scheduled to rejoin the Red Sox rotation on June 5 against Oakland at Fenway Park.

"Adrian Gonzalez is the fourth Red Sox player"

It's probably just those 4 of all time, then. Ruth just missed in 1919, and before that there were hardly any 100 RBI guys. I guess 1901/02 Buck Freeman and maybe 1912 Tris Speaker woulda had a shot but I don't think so. Earl Webb was 1 hit away in 1931, and one game was shortened by blue laws--he would have had at least one more AB! Ol' Earl doesn't know how close he was to making that article...

RBI is an interesting stat to display. Makes me think we want another stat: % of runners scored on an at-bat with runners on base, weighted by which base. Just sayin'.

And I miss Manny, despite the trouble. God, he had a beautiful swing.

As you I get older beseball players shelf life seems so limited. Especially now with steroid testing the careers are going to seem some what shorter.

I think most commenters here miss Manny. He was no trouble to us, quite the opposite.

Makes me think we want another stat: % of runners scored on an at-bat with runners on base, weighted by which base.

And for me, more importantly, out of how many chances. RBIs should be expressed as a pecentage of opportunity.

allan said...

that's okay, jason, don't get up.

I think that's from time seeming to move so much faster when you're older. When you're a kid, five years, 10 years - it's forever. Now, whoosh, five years is nothing, flies by.

Jere said...

Go to a hitter's page on B-R, go to More Stats, scroll down to Situational Hitting, and you can at least see the # of baserunners the guy had on base, how many scored while he was up, and the percentage.

Amy said...

Hi all. Only dropping by to say hello and

OH NO..where did that hit him? Yikes!

Anyway...can't thread tonight since my daughter is home. But

GO SOX!

laura k said...

Jere, right, of course you can figure it out. My point is that the RBI stat is expressed as a counting number, and much is made of it, but it doesn't mean a lot unless you know how many chances the player had - so it should be expressed as a percentage.

Jere said...

No I'm saying the percentage is there too.

Mark said...

Lowrie scrotum!

laura k said...

Right, I get that. I'm saying the percentage is the way the RBI stat should be written, all the time, rather than the way they are now.

laura k said...

...not something smart fans can look up, but the mainstream way announcers and others talk about a player's performance.

Kathryn said...

EB at it again!!

Mark said...

Yes he motherfucking is.

Jays leading Sabathia 4-1

I think that inherited runners who score should be split between original pitcher and reliever and dependent upon what base they were on.

After pitching change:
Runner scores from 1st: .25 to #1 and .75 to #2
From 2nd: .5 & .5
From 3rd: .75 to #1 and .25 to #2.

I'm good at reading lips and Beckett was most pleased after Hill got that last out.

Jake of All Trades said...

Beckett likes him too.

Jere said...

why wasn't Beckett covering 3rd on that grounder to Youk? or at least in the picture appearing to head in that direction?

Jere said...

Wow, Sabathia went 9. Jays up one going bottom 9.

Jere said...

fucking yanks tie it with 2 outs in the 9th---earlier, Posada's single was played into a double by Bautista, cost them. pieces of fucking shit.

Mark said...

What an odd way for an error to be caused, the glove going into the top of the bag.

laura k said...

Cactus on base again!

Jere said...

"the glove going into the top of the bag."

what is this referring to? that last error the ball just hit off his glove.

Jere said...

why don't guys just run through home when it's a force?

Mark said...

His glove went onto the bag and the corner of the bag pushed in the pocket of the glove.

Amy said...

And I am back for the final countdown.

1

Jere said...

"His glove went onto the bag and the corner of the bag pushed in the pocket of the glove."

You mean in the top of the ninth? The throw from first to second? Because that's not what happened, it just bounced out of the glove. Glove was not right at the bag.

Amy said...

Stupid Yankees can't just lose the damn game?

allan said...

Stupid Blue Jays can't just win the damn game?

Jere said...

stupid both can't just win/lose damn game?

Tigers have the tying run on in the 8th.

Amy said...

God damn it.

allan said...

1 out
solo shot
still up by 2

no problem, just finish it

Mark said...

OK I think Bot will walk this guy if he sees him again, 3 AB's and 2 HR's.

Jere said...

If it's any consolation, Tigers hit a 2-run dong at the same time to lead the Rays. We could still get 2nd place here.

laura k said...

Come on now. Just 2 more outs before anyone else scores, ok?

Amy said...

Phew!

Jere said...

laura k said...
