Red Sox - 002 000 200 - 4 5 0 Spiders - 010 000 001 - 2 6 1Palindromic dirty water!
Jason Varitek's two-run homer in the seventh gave Beckett (6.2-5-1-3-6, 111) a cushion and helped the Red Sox move into second place in the AL East.
Beckett had only one 1-2-3 inning, but except for the run that scored in the second, he allowed only two Cleveland runners to advance past first base.
In the Boston third, Carl Crawford was hit by a pitch and stole second. After Drew Sutton moved Crawford to third with a ground out, Jacoby Ellsbury walked and stole second. Jed Lowrie's sacrifice fly scored Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez's double scored Ellsbury.
David Ortiz doubled twice and was on base when Varitek hit his first dong since May 30, 2010.
The Yankees scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings to beat the Blue Jays 5-4 and the Tigers beat the Rays 7-6, so the Red Sox (26-22) moved into second place, 0.5 GB New York (26-21), with Tampa Bay (26-23) 1 GB and Toronto 2.5 GB.
Josh Beckett / Fausto Carmona
Beckett, in four May starts: 0.39 ERA, 23.1 innings, 16 hits, 5 walks, 20 strikeouts, opponents (Angels, Twins, Yankees, Tigers) hitting .195/.267/.195. He left his last start with a sore neck.
Beckett lost to Cleveland in his first start of the season (April 5, 5-5-3-4-4, 106). Carmona threw seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks, against Boston on April 7.
Adrian Gonzalez is the fourth Red Sox player since 1920 to have 65+ hits and 40+ RBIs through the team's first 46 games of the season.
YEAR HITS RBI AVG OBP SLG OPS Ted Williams 1948 65 48 .387 .528 .696 1.224 Jim Rice 1978 67 50 .347 .396 .705 1.101 Manny Ramirez 2001 71 56 401 .483 .740 1.223 Adrian Gonzalez 2011 65 41 .342 .391 .574 .965Gonzalez got a big boost by going 10-for-15 series against the Cubs. John Lackey threw 40 pitches, all fastballs, in the bullpen today here at Progressive Field. His right elbow felt fine and he is scheduled for a longer bullpen session on Friday in Detroit.
From there, Lackey will pitch in a minor-league rehab game on May 31 and is tentatively scheduled to rejoin the Red Sox rotation on June 5 against Oakland at Fenway Park.

"Adrian Gonzalez is the fourth Red Sox player"
It's probably just those 4 of all time, then. Ruth just missed in 1919, and before that there were hardly any 100 RBI guys. I guess 1901/02 Buck Freeman and maybe 1912 Tris Speaker woulda had a shot but I don't think so. Earl Webb was 1 hit away in 1931, and one game was shortened by blue laws--he would have had at least one more AB! Ol' Earl doesn't know how close he was to making that article...
RBI is an interesting stat to display. Makes me think we want another stat: % of runners scored on an at-bat with runners on base, weighted by which base. Just sayin'.
And I miss Manny, despite the trouble. God, he had a beautiful swing.

As you I get older beseball players shelf life seems so limited. Especially now with steroid testing the careers are going to seem some what shorter.
I think most commenters here miss Manny. He was no trouble to us, quite the opposite.
Makes me think we want another stat: % of runners scored on an at-bat with runners on base, weighted by which base.
And for me, more importantly, out of how many chances. RBIs should be expressed as a pecentage of opportunity.
that's okay, jason, don't get up.
As you I get older beseball players shelf life seems so limited.
I think that's from time seeming to move so much faster when you're older. When you're a kid, five years, 10 years - it's forever. Now, whoosh, five years is nothing, flies by.
Go to a hitter's page on B-R, go to More Stats, scroll down to Situational Hitting, and you can at least see the # of baserunners the guy had on base, how many scored while he was up, and the percentage.
Hi all. Only dropping by to say hello and
OH NO..where did that hit him? Yikes!
Anyway...can't thread tonight since my daughter is home. But
GO SOX!
Jere, right, of course you can figure it out. My point is that the RBI stat is expressed as a counting number, and much is made of it, but it doesn't mean a lot unless you know how many chances the player had - so it should be expressed as a percentage.
No I'm saying the percentage is there too.
Lowrie scrotum!
Right, I get that. I'm saying the percentage is the way the RBI stat should be written, all the time, rather than the way they are now.
...not something smart fans can look up, but the mainstream way announcers and others talk about a player's performance.
EB at it again!!
Yes he motherfucking is.
Jays leading Sabathia 4-1
I think that inherited runners who score should be split between original pitcher and reliever and dependent upon what base they were on.
After pitching change:
Runner scores from 1st: .25 to #1 and .75 to #2
From 2nd: .5 & .5
From 3rd: .75 to #1 and .25 to #2.
getting Yanks on MLBN. Loaded for Bautista!
wow that was perfect Tek
TOR - 001 3
MFY - 010
FKR - 001
DET - 010
Even a Cactus throws a runner out once in a while...
Four guys in their starting lineup with last names starting with C and ending with A.
Had to come by and say:
YAY TEK!
when nesn showed the clev fielders, most of them have last names ending with A.
omg...........
yay
Varitek throws out ANOTHER runner! What is this?
teCSbook
That's 2 for Tek!
What's Varitek going to do next? NOT swing at stupid shit above his head?
2fer for Tek!
Hi Rob, Bruins must be off today? :)
I like how LaPorta didn't even try to get back to first.
8-4-3
Tampa down 4-3
Stop swinging! I haven't been watching that closely but it seems like Carmona throws like 5% strikes.
huge DP by Jeter, 4-1 after 7
I love watching Papi motor around the bases.
Tek must have had his Wheaties this morning.
WooHoo!
Tek Dong?!?!?
McCarver's Least Fave Sound!
Nice day for the captain!
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DID YOU DO TO JASON VARITEK!?!
Quite a night for my guy!
Get out of the way Josh!
C'mon, bullpen.
I like this Rich Hill guy.
K
I'm good at reading lips and Beckett was most pleased after Hill got that last out.
Beckett likes him too.
why wasn't Beckett covering 3rd on that grounder to Youk? or at least in the picture appearing to head in that direction?
Wow, Sabathia went 9. Jays up one going bottom 9.
jesus - that scared me.
That could have been a disaster--a few broken ribs, bloody noses, whatever.
i got worried when seeing the replay!!
fucking yanks tie it with 2 outs in the 9th---earlier, Posada's single was played into a double by Bautista, cost them. pieces of fucking shit.
MFYs tie it up 4-4.
Jere--appropriately placed f-words
that MLBN host loves the Yanks so much it's sickening. anyway, they win.
DOINK!!!!!!!!!!
What an odd way for an error to be caused, the glove going into the top of the bag.
Cactus on base again!
"the glove going into the top of the bag."
what is this referring to? that last error the ball just hit off his glove.
why don't guys just run through home when it's a force?
His glove went onto the bag and the corner of the bag pushed in the pocket of the glove.
And I am back for the final countdown.
1
"His glove went onto the bag and the corner of the bag pushed in the pocket of the glove."
You mean in the top of the ninth? The throw from first to second? Because that's not what happened, it just bounced out of the glove. Glove was not right at the bag.
Stupid Yankees can't just lose the damn game?
Stupid Blue Jays can't just win the damn game?
stupid both can't just win/lose damn game?
Tigers have the tying run on in the 8th.
God damn it.
1 out
solo shot
still up by 2
no problem, just finish it
OK I think Bot will walk this guy if he sees him again, 3 AB's and 2 HR's.
If it's any consolation, Tigers hit a 2-run dong at the same time to lead the Rays. We could still get 2nd place here.
Come on now. Just 2 more outs before anyone else scores, ok?
Phew!
2
thank u drew
Whew, good catch. One more.
Water.
NOW it's over!
Dirty water!
Don't drink the water! It is DIRTY!
Okay, we can pass the Rays if Det holds on now.
WOW. DIrty water.
C'mon Tigers.
I'm hoping we can get a Cleveland station tomorrow on our way to Windsor/Detroit. Day game in the car on the way to a day game - heaven!
No game threads for five days? Right?
Ballpark @ Arlington has been evacuated to the concourses due to a tornado threat
2nd place is ours.
We lead the wild card!!!!!!
On May 1st we were 3.5 out of the wild card chasing 7 teams..........
nice turnaround
No game threads for five days? Right?
Yes.
Next JoS thread: Monday, May 30 vs the White Sox. (Though Rob or Tim may be at the AltSite.)
