Ortiz, Red Sox Split Difference, Avoid Arbitration

Buster Olney reports that David Ortiz and the Red Sox have agreed on a $14,575,000 contract for 2012, splitting the difference between their respective arbitration submissions. The hearing had been scheduled for later today.

Flo had wanted $16.5 and the club offered $12.65.

Peter Abraham reports that Adrian Gonzalez, Daniel Bard, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Bobby Valentine arrived in camp today.

I'm surprised that it took until today to reach what I assumed was the expected outcome. I wonder if there was discussion on additional years that included performance bonuses to offset possible declines in production?

So it's possible that when Opening Day arrives, there will only be two players on the team that were part of the 2004 world champions: Ortiz and Youk (although the latter was not part of the World Series roster that year).

Absolutely needing to get under the cap for 2013 and re-set their luxury tax rate will likely mean this is Ortiz's last season. So go out with a bang, big guy.
