for the "stick to sports" crowd, don't forget that while Tom Seaver was pitching the Mets to a championship he was voicing very public support for the Moratorium against the Vietnam War (from "Nixonland") pic.twitter.com/IfBUwEx2Np

Tom Seaver was 24 years old, in only his third major league season, not yet the star he became, a former Marine who had joined up straight out of high school, working in an extremely conservative industry, in the "capital" of a conservative country, voicing clear opposition to the Vietnam War in 1969, during the World Series.keep in mind that (even more so than now) the world of MLB was pretty conservative in 1969, the Mets were in the middle of the playoffs, and Seaver was an ex Marine. there were many reasons why he might have at least kept quiet. he chose not to to. pic.twitter.com/uDwQUYissw
