The Pro Calls It Quits

Bill Mueller, whose single up the middle knocked Mariano Rivera to the dirt in the bottom of the 9th inning in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS and brought home Dave Roberts with the game-tying run, has retired and accepting a job as a special assistant to Dodgers GM Ned Colletti.

And, somewhere, Mariano Rivera just experienced a curious sensation, first fear washed over him and then a sort of relaxation as the fear went away. He attributes it to God looking out for him.

I'm not a religious man, but god bless you Bill Mueller.

Professional indeed. Truly a class act.

Lets hope his retirement brings as much pleasure to him as that hit brought to me. (its 2006 and I still get giddy when I think of that look on Rivera's face)

Whatever he will do, whatever capacity, he will do it well. He's just that type of guy...the anchor of the leftside of the Sox infield for so long. I wish him the best.
