3:35 PM: NESN says Gagne waives NTC. Looks like it's a done deal: David Murphy, Kason Gabbard and Engel Beltre are off to Texas.

2:35 PM: Fox -- Dye Deal Dead?

***

MSN:
The Red Sox are on the verge of winning the Eric Gagne sweepstakes, pending his approval and a review of his medical records, according to major-league sources.

Gagne must waive his no-trade clause to Boston for the deal to be completed. It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer's role with Jonathan Papelbon. ...

It is not known whom the Rangers would receive for Gagne. ...
SoSHers are also posting (2:15) that Steve Buckley (WEEI?) is saying WMP/Murphy/Hansen for Dye.

We shall see. Both players would have to waive their no-trade clauses by 4 PM.

***

Red Sox trade Joel Pineiro and $ to St. Louis for a player to be named later.

Yankees trade Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit.

Assman now goes like 4-0 with a 0.42 ERA and 24 holds in 31 appearances.

Fox is saying we're "on the verge" of getting Gagne for Gabbard + an unnamed player. "It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer's role with Jonathan Papelbon."

Annoying the Yankees is almost the best thing about this, if it happens. I feel conflicted about losing Gabbard, and as far as I know this is strictly a rental. There was a lot of talk about possible changes to Gagne's contract to compensate him for the loss of closing incentives.

I'm right on the fence about this one.

allan said...

Olney also reporting Gagne to RS.

Pokerwolf said...

The Gagne deal definitely sounds like a "don't let the Yankees get this guy" situation. We already have Jeemer and Paps. When the heck is Gagne going to pitch?

Joel Rubin said...

i don't get it -- why give up a promising young arm (who is filling an important role in the starting rotation right now and may be needed as we head toward the post-season depending on how schilling's arm holds up) for a closer who may or may not be past his prime -- especially when we have Papelbon doing a fine job as a closer? can somebody explain this to me?

Zenslinger said...

Fox is mistakenly referring to Gabbards as a "right-hander".

s1c said...

Weei reporting this is Gabbard and Murphy. Not sure I like this deal.

Zenslinger said...

a) they suspect Gabbard's good performances won't last;

b) they don't want the Yanks to get Gagne; and

c) they're really thinking World Series this year.

And maybe they're thinking we have plenty of pitching prospects coming up?

allan said...

SoSHer Pumpsie:

"I don't think that's quite how Gagne will be used. I think that he'll be made the co-closer.

"One of the problems we've been running into with Paps is when to use him. He's our only closer and we have to be concerned with overwork. And, sometimes there are no save situations for him to close. So, the biggest problem so far has been that Paps often sits too long between appearances and he can't be as sharp (see his last game on Saturday, as a prime example.) IF we make Gagne and Paps our co-closers then that problem can go away because Tito can make sure that both guys get the right amount of work to stay sharp and he doesn't have to worry whether he'll have a closer for the next game. He'll always have a closer. So, Paps can come into a non-save situation just to stay sharp and IF there's a need for a closer the next game, no worries, because Gagne is there...and vice versa.

There will be days when they are used in the same game, sure, but it won't be exclusively that. They'll be co-closers."

If this works out, I can't begin to tell you how fucking excited I'll be. THIS! is a bullpen by committee. And a fucking great one with Jeemer, Gagne and the Bot.

Gabbard and Murphy for Gagne ... or for Dye?

allan said...

2:35:n

Now Rosenthal (Fox) is saying Dye deal dead.

"The two teams apparently could not come to an agreement on players. Dye never was formally approached for his permission to approve a deal."

allan said...

Buster Olney now saying that Engel Beltre (17 YO Sox prospect out of DR) is included in the Gagne deal.

Amy Nelson on ESPN: Trying to change trade escalator from "games finished" to simply "games played" in. Wants to get moving costs included.

Ron said...

I'll throw in $10 for the moving van if it will help.

Zenslinger said...

Edes on Extra Bases is a lot more cautious ("Gagne deal moving forward; hurdles remain").

allan said...

SoSH PooNani: Gammons "just called Kason Gabbard 'Jimmy Key Jr.' and Steve Phillips said 'boy those Red Sox must be going for it all this year'."

Could this stupidity possibly be accurate?

Moving $: I'm in for 20.

Zenslinger said...

A couple over at Replacement Level are gnashing their teeth over how the Red Sox would be getting Gagne for nothing. No notion of Gabbard's significant worth has been mentioned.

tim said...

This bullpen is going to be obscenely awesome if this deal pushes through. Sad to see Gabbard go, but he did his job. Schill will be back and if anyone else is out we've got ol reliable Sexy Lips to plug the hole.

But, if Gagne comes over, the starters will only have to go 5 innings - MDC in the 6th, Jeemer in the 7th, Gagne and Papelbon in the 8th/9th. Throw in Tavarez now and then and we're golden.

tim said...

I just shat myself. What a ridiculously awesome pen Theo's built.

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, Extra Bases is calling it official.

Jere said...

"But, if Gagne comes over, the starters will only have to go 5 innings - MDC in the 6th, Jeemer in the 7th, Gagne and Papelbon in the 8th/9th. Throw in Tavarez now and then and we're golden."

It will be a great pen, but let's not get all Michael Kay about it--those guys can't pitch every single day. But having that many solid guys, we can mix and match.

Sorry about the Kay jab. It's just that he was always so sure about it--"Yankee starters only have to go 6. Then you've got Sturtze, Gordon, and Mo", who he pukingly called TanGorMo, as if just plugging in guys means A. they can pitch every day and B. they will succeed every time. (And before that it was Quantrill and Gordon before Mo. Ha.) Anyway, our current pen is way better than that...

tim said...

I wasn't being serious :P

DelOkaGagPap all the way!

allan said...

who he pukingly called TanGorMo

Just like Remy did with LoVaGoYo or whatever the fuck it was.

Devine said...

I literally laughed out loud on that one, Tim.

Hahahaha, DelOkaGagPap. Brilliant!

Devine said...

YoLoGoLoVa.

Supposedly a play on "Oye Como Va" by Santana (the guitarist, not the pitcher).

Ugh, that was silly.

Jere said...

Huge difference: Remy goofin around, Kay acting like Tan GorMor was the official nickname of a robo-pitching machine for the three greatest Yankees of all time who cannot be stopped. Until they all get overcooked by Torre and shit the bed at the end of the year.

Jere said...

And now Bob Ryan just brings up the 96 Yanks, the "original 6 inning game" with Nelson and Stanton, then Mo and Wetteland. This is what Kay was thinking was just an automatic 7 years later--as long as you've got a few names that go into certain spots, the starters only have to go 6.

Noah said...

I guess with Lester coming back and Schilling coming off the DL, Gabbard was expendable.

Still wish we could have gotten Jermaine Dye.

Jackie said...

To this day I can't hear Oye Como Va without thinking of Remy.

The more I think about this deal, the more I totally love it. You know Theo was just like, "They think we can't assess relief pitching? They think I don't know how to build a bullpen? I'll show them a f*cking bullpen." Love it.

nick said...

I can see plenty of reason for this one, though I did like Gabbard.

and those moving expenses. heh.

Jere said...

What I'm saying to you, Tim, is that I totally agree with you, I just prefer not to talk about it in Yankee terms. (see Don "Slugo" Slaught.) L-Girl, bash away....

allan said...

This was a perfect time to deal Gabbard. I wish him well in Texas -- he's probably the ace of the staff now!

allan said...

Gagne's ERA+: 213
Papelbon's ERA+: 210

Jeemer's ERA+: 518 (!!!)

tim said...

I just prefer not to talk about it in Yankee terms.

Perfectly understandable :-P

Ron said...

Where do I send the $10?

tim said...

Email me for the address.

(I don't feel like posting my address online...oh wait, I blew my cover)

laura k said...

Remy may have been kidding, but he wouldn't shut the eff up about it. He sold t-shirts fer chrissakes. I hated it.

I did not find it Kay-like, but I hated it just the same.

laura k said...

Gagne = Canadian

Quebecois, too. Plus he idolized Pedro Martinez when he was coming up.

allan said...

Yup. Says he used to go to the Big O as a kid and watch Pedro in the bullpen before games -- and he modeled his changeup on Pedro's.

laura k said...

L-Girl, bash away....

Pfft. I hope you don't equate my disagreements with you with bashing.

Jere said...

Remy doing that Santana shit, note, was during my "still not getting NESN days," so I didn't have to hear it, I will admit.

allan said...

Look at this crap from AP (my emphasis):

"But the Red Sox, who entered Tuesday leading the AL East by eight games over the New York Yankees, didn't want to take any chances of blowing their big lead and acquired Gagne to bolster the back end of their bullpen after consecutive implosions last weekend by Papelbon and Manny Delcarmen."

Can you hear my eyes rolling?

Jere said...

"Pfft. I hope you don't equate my disagreements with you with bashing."

Just couldn't think of a word that meant "make fun of my silly semantics", and had to come up with something in this dynamic, fast-paced trade deadline environment:)

Jere said...

Watching Theo at the press conference with a goatee now.... says we'll get our relievers some good rest, keep 'em fresh, etc. Used "dog days of August" phrase.

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, RS, that is major horseshit.

One comment attached to the Gagne trade article on fannation made the interesting assertion that the Sox were not trying to keep Gagne from the Yanks, but from the Tigers. Not that I think that was the primary thrust, but maybe an interesting secondary one. Hard to imagine them continuing their slide.

And if the Angels haven't been able to add Teixiera or Glaus, that improves the playoff picture for us as well.

Devine said...

Man, I am loving the comments today. Jackie scores with Theo's musing about bullpens.

"They think I don't know how to build a bullpen? I'll show them a f*cking bullpen." Awesome. Effing hilarious.

I do wish we'd gotten some kind of offensive punch, though. We've strengthened our strength, as far as I can tell. What I worry about are Ortiz/Drew injuries, more than the bullpen crumbling, is what I'm saying.

Zenslinger said...

...keep 'em fresh...

Yeah, well, someone's still gotta go down to the minors when Schilling's back. Snyder? Or Timlin to the DL?

allan said...

Comments from Theo and Tito.

allan said...

RedSox.com:

"He'll serve as Jonathan Papelbon's setup man and close on days that Papelbon is getting rest. ... Gabbard was scheduled to pitch for the Red Sox on Wednesday night. Instead, Tim Wakefield will take his place."

Aw, devine, you make me blush.

And that ERA+ makes me happy in my sexy parts. HOT.

Love the deal, Suprised Wily Mo is still here though...Also heard Farnsworth is pissed he is still a yankee.....

There's no sex in baseball! Wait, what's the title of this blog?

As far as offensive depth is concern, I liked the look I got at Ellsbury last month, didn't you? Expanded roster.

Maybe even something clicks or is clicking with WMP. Imagine in 2008 recalling the near miss when we tried our best to get rid of him.
