I know there wasn't room to keep Carlos Pena on this team, and I wish him untold success against the MFYs, but it's still bittersweet to see him lighting everything up in Tampa this year.
I do. That kid's rock solid. Looking at the schedule, he might not pitch at Fenway until mid-August.
"I know there wasn't room to keep Carlos Pena"
Yeah, Wily Mo does take up a lot of space.
On NESN just now, Tina told us how Thome, being an ex-teammate of Manny, has a "different" perspective on Manny. That perspective: that the MBM stories are blown out of proportion and that Manny's a hard-worker. (!) You'd think Tina would've said "Thome, unlike most of the country, knows what we smart people in Boston ALREADY know is the truth about Manny." Instead, she calls it a "different" perspective. Terrible.
MDC little meltdown. Okaji puts out the fire. Let's have an insurance run or two, eh? Don't need as many as the Yanks need today, but it'd be a shame to let this sure win get away.

He's pitching tomorrow, and I don't expect much. I saw him in Pawtucket, he looked average, which is what the rest of the games have sounded like. Who knows though- this could be his spark. I have no problem with the move.
"He's pitching tomorrow, and I don't expect much."
Right, but his first several starts will be on the road if he stays on a normal schedule. That's what I was saying. Just pointing out the home crowd won't see him for a while, despite that he's in the rotation as of tomorrow.
I'm surprised -- they nixed Pinero outright. What is he making, $4.5m? But what does it matter? He's been consistently mediocre to bad. I'm surprised & impressed by the move.
I'll bet Javier Lopez is, too.
Given all this talk about people being desperate for starters at the trade deadline, I'll bet someone picks him up. That will save the Sox, what, $300,000 or so?
Cleveland is #1 in P/PA at 3.97. Given that and their .359 OBP vs. LHP, this is a really tough team to give a guy who has spotty control his first ML start of the year against.
from me: ERA+ 97 WHIP 1.65 This being before chemotherapy, and combined with his post-chemo minor stuff, I have extremely low expectations. I love the kid and I want nothing more than him to be a successful starter with us. One good thing of note: http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=4930&position=P&page=0&type=full
Small sample size be damned, i almost want to believe his cancer caused that era to skyrocket.
Well, the rock-solidness, as I said above. We saw him last year, and he showed his ready for the majors. I mean, this is the guy we've basically decided is in our rotation. And, he's a lefty. And he's gonna be way high on adrenalin tonight. First pitch on the backstop-style. I'm sure he'll be able to contain himself, though.
In fact, the PawSox manager is on EEI right now and he says Jon's ready, and he ignores the W-L and ERA he's had at Pawtucket. Judging by control and command, he's ready, he says. That's what he was sharpening up down there. And it's not like they rushed him.
Yeah, i saw that comment by the pawtucket manager, i thought it was trade bait, but we'll see. I don't really want to trade lester, I like him and I like having a lefty in the rotation. It's probably true that at pawtucket they gave him goals to work on rather than letting him pitch his game, but I'm not sure how much he really refined his control.
We'll find out soon enough! I'm excited, it should be a great watch.
"Lester is only going to be here for this start or maybe 2 and then sent down again , I would assume...."
But Lester's our 5th starter. I love what Gabbo's done, but why should Jon be punished? Wouldn't going with Gabbo over Lester be the same as if we'd started Cora over Pedroia? Or acting like Tavarez is now a solid starter, when he proved he wasn't after a while of doing it? I mean, if Jon really shits the bed, you'd have to think about letting him go back down, but as of now, I'm thinking our 5th starter's back. In a tough spot right now, though. Loaded, one out....
"It wouldn't be punishing Jon to recognize that Gabbard's had much better control this year."
Than who? Even if you mean better control than last year, it is still punishing someone who already had a job locked up to not give him a full chance once he's ready to come back.
jere, you make good points seeing that Lester had a 2.38 era on July 23rd last year, they announced he had cancer < I believe in late August and from July 23 to Aug 23 his era jumped 2.5 points .....It must have been when the cancer started to tire him out....Screw lets go to 6 man rotation or move Wake to the pen....
If Allan were here, he'd back me up on the screaming-it's-a-perfect-game stuff, but if Allan were here, we wouldn't be posting in an old White Sox thread.
DO and Rem said we haven't seen a squeeze. July 4th, Cora squeezed in Coco, first inning. Maybe they meant suicide squeeze. If they did, they should've said that.
Hey, anyone know what they meant by "planted signs over the weekend?" I swear one of those signs someone held on the Fox game looked suspicious, like "The Sox and Fox, the perfect team," or some crap. Is that what they're referring to?
But it looked suspicious to me at the time--so when I heard Remy actually talking about "some networks plant signs" I thought back to it. Could be. But the great thing was, they mentioned that because a kid was holding up a sign that said at the bottom, "Mandatory Rem & DO plug."

Go Sox, indeed. Hopefully the knuckler will be dancing an' the bats will be hot enough to tee up Garland for double digits.
The Globe is reporting that Lester has been called up to the majors to make the start tomorrow night in Cleveland.
And we'll have to get rid of Lopez because Pinero makes more money?
Welcome back to Jon. I don't expect too much, but it's gotta beat Lips.

Lowell 3-run HR! Sweet!

Aaaagh, Papelbon is pitching like crap!
What a recovery. Wow.
Hopefully KC will stay hot in the next few games against the MFYs; I'd rather not lose some ground as we head to Cleveland.

Magic number for the division is at 59. =)

I guess Cleveland is a little easier place to start off with, that is good.
What makes you confident in him?

I'm looking forward to Lester's return...he was one of my favorite players even before overcoming cancer.
It's great to have him back --- and our bullpen will be stronger +Lips -Pinzero

We can only hope.
Er, that should be, we can only hope....he does well.
Need an edit button for tools like me.

I approve of this half inning.
Crisp is boiling hot - 8 for his last 10!!!

It wouldn't be punishing Jon to recognize that Gabbard's had much better control this year.
Meanwhile TCM's throwing a perfect game in KC.

not so much.......
Surely you know how that works here by now.
It was a perfect game for like 2 innings anyway.

Good problem to have: too many good players.....

Nice 8-pitch inning by Timlin.
White Flag for Cleveland.

They also hosed the Aflac trivia question completely, I hear.

No idea, but it doesn't take a plant to wave a sign like that. It just takes someone willing to swallow enough pride to get to appear on national TV.
But it looked suspicious to me at the time--so when I heard Remy actually talking about "some networks plant signs" I thought back to it. Could be. But the great thing was, they mentioned that because a kid was holding up a sign that said at the bottom, "Mandatory Rem & DO plug."
First to 60 wins!
"Good problem to have: too many good players....."
Amen, brother. 9casey-I wouldn't be shocked to see a six man if lester and gabbard both produce until big schill returns. thoughts?
As for the sign, that was hilarious, don and jerry can't resist...I didn't watch the fox game, but it wouldn't shock me.
