ALDS 1: Red Sox 4, Angels 0

Angels - 000 000 000 - 0 4 0
Red Sox - 103 000 00x - 4 9 0
Beckett: 9 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 108 pitches

Youkilis's solo home run into the Monster Seats in the first got the Red Sox on the board. Yook also doubled into the left field corner with one out in the third, right before Ortiz belted a dong down the right field line. It was his 9th post-season home run. Then Manny walked, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Lowell's single to center. (box)

Beckett was absolutely masterful (and dominant!). Figgins singled to start the game, then Beckett set down the next 19 batters in a row (with only three balls hit out of the infield). Only two Angels runners got to second base all night: Figgins in the first and Aybar in the eighth. Figgins was the only Angel to touch third.

Beckett went to a three-ball count only twice: Figgins in the first (single) and Izturis in the fifth (pop to short). He went to two balls on only six other batters.

Lineups:
Pedroia, 2B Figgins, RF
Youkilis, 1B Cabrera, SS
Ortiz, DH Guerrero, DH
Ramirez, LF Anderson, LF
Lowell, 3B Izturis, 3B
Drew, RF Kotchman, 1B
Varitek, C Kendrick, 2B
Crisp, CF Napoli, C
Lugo, SS Willits, CF

John Lackey (3.01, 144 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.27, 139 ERA+)

While Tim Wakefield is not on the Red Sox roster, the Angels have left off outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. (left knee injury) and pitcher Bartolo Colon (right elbow pain). Vladimir Guerrero (right triceps tendinitis) will likely start the series as the DH (he has not played the outfield since September 4).

Also, Dan Lamothe of Red Sox Monster invited me to take part in a blogger roundtable of previewing the series (along with Ian Bethune of Sox & Dawgs, Mike Colucci of Red Sox Stats Guy and Cam Smith of SoxNest). Read it here.

Both NL series start today: Rockies at Phillies at 3 and Cubs at Diamondbacks at 10.

Papelbon: 2006 to 2007. ... The Globe has a feature on Mike Lowell. ... Scouts discuss the Angels.

Wakefield:
It stinks. It really does, but it's not like it was in '99. They're not taking me out because they think I can't get hitters out. This was a decision we made as a team. Trust me, it was a hard decision to make when I was sitting in that office. It's hard to take yourself out of the equation sometimes ... but in a short series with the rules changing, I don't want to hurt us.
ESPN's Jonah Keri has the "Thinking Fan's Approach" and "Nonthinking Fan's Approach" to the ALDS. Also, 9 of 10 ESPN writers pick the Red Sox, 7 of 10 pick Cleveland, 8 of 10 pick the Cubs, and 6 of 10 pick the Phillies.

The Herald's Michael Silverman says: Red Sox in 5. The Globe's writers' picks are here.

Rob Bradford writes about Manny Ramirez, "by all accounts one of the smartest, best-prepared hitters in the history of the game".
Later in the workout, which is done 30 minutes before every game, Page throws four rings at Ramirez. Each ring has a different colored ball attached to it, and Page calls out the color of the ball Manny has to grab out of mid-air.

"It's comical how good he is at it," Page said. "Other guys try it, but they don't come close."

Most people also don't realize Ramirez is the only position player who routinely stretches and runs with the pitchers. And hardly anyone sees Manny in the weight room nine hours before the first pitch of night games, at home and on the road.
At the beginning of this season, I mentioned the ultra-fine point pens (0.25 mm line width) I keep score with. I was surpised to learn that there is exists an even-finer 0.20 mm pen. But I never saw it for sale at my store in Manhattan.

Well, guess what I found three weeks ago in Mississauga -- and am breaking out for the first time tonight? 0.20, baby!

Just be happy the Red Sox didn't draw Tim McClelland for the series. We'd either be in luck, or in trouble.

I only worry about that if the Sox are giving up walks to go with hits. If they can keep their WHIP at 1.30 and below they will be ok.

While I like your Sox in 4, this team does worry me in that they can be pesky. We need the starters to step up and go a min. of 6, preferably 7+ in their starts.

The big three offensive stats for each team's probable lineup. (Red Sox: F-Yeah, Youk, Flo, MBM, Dr., Drew, Tek, oCoC, Slügo) (Angels: Figgins, OC, Vlad, Anderson, Kotchman, Izturis, Kendrick, Napoli, Willits)

Red Sox: .287 BA, 142 HR (15.8 HR per batter), 723 RBI (80.3 RBI per batter)

Angels: .299 BA, 86 HR (9.6 HR per batter), 575 RBI (63.9 RBI per batter)

I admire your willingness to be so public with your insanity. :)

Projo (McAdam) has turned Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis into Jeff Napoli. I can only assume they/he are trying to help the Angels by combining their patient at the plate catcher with other offensive skills, with their young defensive whiz.

...this could be trouble for the Sox.

s1c said...

Just heard on WEEI about 30 minutes ago that MBM will be batting 4th, Lowell 5th and Drew 6th tonight. Tito, excuse me Terry, (maybe we should just make that tjt) said that the lineup will look like what they want to get out there. I assume that means Pedroia and Youk at 1-2 with Tek, !!!!ocoC, Lugo being the 7-9.

If he puts Lugo leading off I am sure you will be hearing my scream of outrage up in the Great north!

Do you realize how hard this would be to do? Wow.

Would love video of this. Bradford is a great writer, always getting stuff and angles no one else gets.

The logical question is why haven't the other writers been telling us these things about Manny for the last 7 years?

allan said...

Micron Mojo!!!!!!

(I was pretty hyped up the day we bought the pen though, wasn't I?)

allan said...

Are you sure it is wise to switch pens at this point?

I believe the .20 is the key to this entire post-season.

I go through 3-4 of these pens a season, so there isn't any lucky pen per se.

Re lucky stuff: I still refer to one pair of boxer shorts as my Lucky Papi Shorts, and they date back to 2003, so how lucky can they be, really?

Patriots Film said...

that drill manny does is HARD. The circle with the balls on it is pretty big, but the balls are spinning so fast, i usually did worse than plain luck. but I guess that's why i'm not one of the best RHH ever :(

Patriots Film said...

Also, I just read the rest of the article. If the "golf ball sized" drill is the one I'm thinking of, where you use the wiffle-style practice golf balls, that is also hard, but I had a lot more success than the ring drill. It makes you feel a lot more confident about your swing. When you first start, it's like your first whiffleball game- comical misses. You swear you were following it, but you weren't. By the end, you've noticeably improved.

The ring drill, on the other hand, I just never got.

I'm Seceding From "Red Sox Nation"

... because I'm a Red Sox fan, I'm thrown in this group of assholes known as "Red Sox Nation" and what comes with that association is a bunch of shit I never bought into or deserve for that matter. I'm a Sox fan and sometimes (most times) I'm a complete asshole about it. But I do it in my own unique way that has NOTHING TO DO with membership cards or worrying about meaningless division leads or buying "Ultimate Fan Packs" OR WATCHING A DEBATE ABOUT A FAKE PRESIDENT OF A FAKE ORGANIZATION THAT WAS CREATED TO EXPLOIT MY LOYALTY TO MY FUCKING TEAM! I don't want any of that and I never signed up for this shit. I admit to being an asshole about my fandom and am completely comfortable with people thinking I'm an asshole Red Sox fan. But I'm not a "Red Sox Nation Asshole Fan." I'm my own asshole.

Thanks to Andy at 12eight.

Wow, the whole gang is dropping in here hours before the game---cool! Are we all pumped up or what?? :) I unfortunately will miss the first 90 minutes of the game because I have to go observe someone teach tonight from 6:30 til 8. How tacky would it be to check the score on my cell phone now and then? There is wireless in the room, and maybe some less than fully conscientious student will be watching on their laptop. I would take mine but it would be SO obvious what I am doing, as I don't need to be "taking notes."

Oh, god.

They did. It was started by a lurker who put in the title that we were playing the Indians. He changed it and apologized, many people said ban him, others laughed and said carry on, I posted in it ... now I just looked and it's gone and it looks like the lurker has been banned.

There should be a new one up soon. It sounded like Schilling was supposed to start it in the first place.

We're not going to be at Fenway, either.

laura k said...

So...what is our take on Phillies v Rockies?

I personally have none. I used to live in Philadelphia and I still don't care.

I do hate the Diamondbacks (for the same reason many here once loved them), so I was glad they didn't get in.

I'll keep hoping for a 1918 rematch. And more Cubs heartbreak, of course.

allan said...

Actually, I guess Game 3 will be at the Jake.

Zenslinger said...

I like the Rockies; my brother lives there and actually renounced primary RS fanhood to root for the then-new team. Although he admits that he'd be torn about a RS/Rockies World Series.

Their ownership is a bunch of assholes, but it's hard not to like a team of young up and coming guys. And despite all the terrible things I have heard about Philly fans, one has to hand it to them for hanging in there. But I like the Rockies.

I am having trouble visualizing this Manny ball-on-a-ring exercise.

Yup. That's why I liked the White Sox over Houston in the WS. Besides the history-making White Sox win.

Re Arizona, they beat the Yankees in the 2001 WS, preventing NYY from winning 4 in a row. Red Sox fans were rather happy about that at the time. I'm sure you remember now, since your husband was probably quite unhappy.

Amy said...

OK, I get it, Laura. Your loyalties were elsewhere back in 2001. Yes, I certainly remember the 2001 WS. I remember being torn---as a Sox fan, I wanted the Yankees to lose. But I also felt like New Yorkers deserved something to lift their spirits after 9/11. Yeah, my husband was sad about that Series.

Anyone know where I can gander some more about this? thanks.

Jim said...

My 3 simple little keys that I hope are not too much to ask:

1. A leadoff double by the Sox is a squander-free zone.
2. Lugo does not botch an easy ground ball.
3. Gagne looks like he wants to throw the ball.

Now, just go out and play.

laura k said...

It's not just you West Coast. Time is definitely standing still!

laura k said...

OK, I get it, Laura. Your loyalties were elsewhere back in 2001.

Yup. It was my last good season as a Yankees fan. After 9/11, the experience at the Stadium became unbearable, and I started to lose my heart for the team.

I remember being torn---as a Sox fan, I wanted the Yankees to lose. But I also felt like New Yorkers deserved something to lift their spirits after 9/11.

Bah. Plenty of New Yorkers aren't Yankees fans, remember. (Allan, for example.) The playoffs were great, the WS was great, and that was lift enough. No reason for a Sox fan to be torn about that one, IMO.

allan said...

Thanks, gk. I'll check it out.

Woti, three simple requests, let's see if the Sox can grant them.

Amy said...

I am sure you are right that not all NYers are Yankee fans (for example, Mets fans), but I was seeing things through the eyes of my husband and family, so I was torn. Also, as I recall, the media also kept making that point about NY needing a lift. I am sure that I would think differently with the perspective of time, but at that time, I did feel torn. I had grown up in the NY area and had worked in NYC at one point, so I guess those old loyalties came up. After 2003, that would NEVER happen again.

allan said...

But I also felt like New Yorkers deserved something to lift their spirits after 9/11.

Oh yeah, that was that small window of time in which people outside of NYC suspended their hatred of NYC. Thakfully, it returned quickly.

I loved 2001! ... Luis Gonzalez, if you're out there, the first 5 rounds are on me!

allan said...

I'm still at work at the moment, so why do something constructive? My dad enjoys baseball, but is not hardcore. He has a particular restaurant he wants to go to and they do not have a TV...they do have excellent organic wood-fire pizzas and wifi from the coffee shop next door, however.

"Wakefield has now had two cortisone shots in his back this season, with the second one coming on Sunday morning, after his Saturday night start. Wakefield then did nothing on Monday, to let the shot do its work, before playing catch on Tuesday. That was where the problem cropped up.

... This is the same injury Wakefield dealt with during August, when he was scratched from a start that later allowed Clay Buchholz to throw his no-hitter. The pain is in the area between his back and his shoulder."

Here we go!! LET'S GO JOSH! (Our man sans nickname.)

Jere said...

Do not walk the first guy of game one.

Lord Lynch said...

I'd sure feel miffed as a fan to see someone who is so close to the organisation win it.

Anyway, more serious stuff.

s1c said...

Yook's gotta be a shoe in for gold glove

You would think, but will not happen. Most likely Pena or Morneau will win it.

s1c said...

Ok, I missed it, who are the announcers?

laura k said...

L: Doesn't just apply to ballgames, either, just the general concept. "Hey, that thing on TV is right outside, too!"

And we were just talking about 9/11. That's what that makes me think of.

OK, that's it for 9/11 tonight, back to baseball now.

laura k said...

s1c: steve stone and ted robinson.

i know stone from some fox or espn games. (fox, i think.) no idea who robinson is. anyone?

s1c said...

Stone - Man he doesn't sound anything like he did when he was on WGN doing the Cubs games. Of course that was a few years ago when I would watch those games.

laura k said...

OK Josh, go for the K...

allan said...

robinson's marty-feldman-eyes scared me during the pre-game.

Lord Lynch said...

My beloved has taken off - so off soon. Come on Josh, lets have the eyedeal pitch for Garrett,

laura k said...

Nice!

Jere said...

Nice job, Josh. Now let's take a huge lead.

laura k said...

eyedeal pitch :)

allan said...

bat the blind guy 4th!

mrs. garret down by way of the K

Lord Lynch said...

eye do meye best.

Zenslinger said...

Well done, Josh!

They hit-and-run successfully twice -- but no run came in. Very nice.

tim said...

You would think, but will not happen. Most likely Pena or Morneau will win it.

I call bullshit to that...Pena had a lot of HRs so that's somehow relevant to a gold glove. Fucking people suck ass. Record for error-less games, come on!

Jere said...

Ted Robinson did Mets games for a while.

Zenslinger said...

down by way of the K

I can't drink for another hour and twelve minutes.

laura k said...

ZS, you have a drinking hour?

laura k said...

Come on Fuck Yeah!

allan said...

making 0 errors should help yook.

let's go pedROYa

s1c said...

Tim I agree with you, but you have to remember who votes for the thing. Wasn't too long ago that you saw a person who only played 27 games at first win the gold glove, why, because of his bat.

RE: see Jeter vs Gonzo last year.

s1c said...

Youk!!!!

allan said...

DONG!

gonna be a long night lackey.

Lord Lynch said...

I'll take that Youk.....

Jere said...

Yooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooo oooooooooooo ooooooooo k

laura k said...

YOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!

Zenslinger said...

Were we worried about batting Youk 2nd?

Yeah yeah yeah!!!

Zenslinger said...

Well, L-Girl, I try not to drink while at work. I try.

allan said...

anderson standing about 1-2 feet in front of warning track.

why don't AL teams know how to play fenway?

s1c said...

Ted Robinson did Mets games for a while.

That is where I've heard that voice.

Ish- did Uncle Joe go crazy on Youks blast?

laura k said...

LOL, I momentarily forgot where you are. (Alzheimer's again.) That's a good practice, not drinking at work. It helps pay the mortgage or the rent.

Lord Lynch said...

This is your time Teaser...

Jere said...

Love it when Papi goes left side!!!

allan said...

shift this.

laura k said...

FLO!

CaKeY said...

Lookin' good guys!

btw - Anyone else getting a bunch of phone calls from people asking what channel the game is on?

allan said...

L calling a manny dong.

Jere said...

That guy saved a double. I'll gladly take it, though.

Lord Lynch said...

This is all set up for DJ Werd, you know it, i know it.

What he'll do......

laura k said...

butcher's a bad name for a coach

s1c said...

Actually MBM has a worse average vs Lackey than ON FIRE!!!

MBM-.435
OF -.455

Time for a house call!!

tim said...

Wow, Lackey's definately butchering this one...heh heh heh ;-)

delayed YOOOOOK!

Sarah Haendler said...

Oh this is fun!

Jere said...

"Anyone else getting a bunch of phone calls from people asking what channel the game is on?"

I don't have a phone.

But I'm glad I've watched so much Seinfeld on TBS, so I knew right where to go.

tim said...

lets go fireboy.

Jere said...

I blame the behind-the-plate angle for that pop up.

Lord Lynch said...

Or....Tek with the bases loaded.....

laura k said...

Gives us hope? We got plenty of hope, mr announcer.

tim said...

I blame the behind-the-plate angle for that pop up.

Ditto. But those are the best seats for actually attending a game, funny how that works.

Zenslinger said...

Ah, yes, Laura, West Coast. Ideal in many ways for baseball but at the moment I'd rather be out of here.

C'mon, JD, make him pay.

tim said...

Damn Macer, nice play...

Lord Lynch said...

it saved the agony of tek with the bases loaded...thank heaven for small mercies.

s1c said...

Crap- coulda and shoulda been more runs there.

Still will take the 1-0 lead!!!

Jere said...

Patented Drew: Stand there for a long time, then do something weak.

laura k said...

West Coast. Ideal in many ways for baseball but at the moment I'd rather be out of here.

It always seems ideal to me. My Yankee-fan friend who moved out there loves it for baseball - esp since he's an actor and often home for those late-afternoon starts.

Rob said...

Ish- did Uncle Joe go crazy on Youks blast?

Pretty much. Not as crazy as I've heard him, but he called it like it was - a postseason home run.

I'm very surprised... there's NO delay between the radio and tv!

Jere said...

add to my last comment: On a hitter's count.

laura k said...

I wish we could call a moratorium on Drew-complaining. I'd even trade my Timlin-complaining for it.

Rob said...

Ted Robinson did the US Open this year. Tennis.

laura k said...

no delay - nice!!

Jere said...

You should call a moratorium on Drew-plaining, it would save me a lot of time and energy.

allan said...

Pee Wee and the Dr. also made outs that inning. They suck.

Jere said...

People may also know Robinson's voice from doing a national game, like CBS radio of something.

laura k said...

Ish, I've been wondering, since you're such a pure baseball fan, what other sports (if any) do you follow very closely? What do you do all winter?

laura k said...

Jere, cool. I don't know if I'm authorized to call a moratorium here, but if I am, I'm calling it!

allan said...

I thought the fact that he was ON FIRE!!! would stem the tide of bitching.

s1c said...

J.D. Will come up big!!! bet the house on it!

tim said...

Aiight, wtg josh. Les do it bottom of the order!

Jere said...

What a cheater. Hey, great job by TBS to take their logo off the screen just before a key part of the replay was about to be obscured by it. Nice.

laura k said...

Of course he will, he's ON FIRE!!!!

As we all know.

allan said...

I like my new scoring pen!

Lord Lynch said...

right. one more innings.

laura k said...

hooray for allan's new scoring pen.

Rob said...

Ish, I've been wondering, since you're such a pure baseball fan, what other sports (if any) do you follow very closely? What do you do all winter?

There aren't any other sports I follow closely. Doesn't mean I won't watch any. I'm a fair-weather Bruins and Patriots fan. Well, I'll watch the Bruins if they're doing okay, but last year, they sucked.

I usually spend the winter watching a large amount of other television shows, like Nip/Tuck, House, some sitcoms, etc.

Winter is hard.

s1c said...

I like my new scoring pen!

Yeah!!

C'mon TEK!!

laura k said...

Tek's hit for the DS?!

Jere said...

g'job, Tek.

nixon33 said...

just dropping in to say
WE ARE GOING TO WIN

Colin said...

I can't wait until I'm back in CT where NESN flows like wine, but at least I'm having quality time with the gf in Rochester (YES suck-ups).

Lord Lynch said...

Oh great. Her flight is due 20 minutes early.

Come on ocoC. Make me sleep easy.

laura k said...

Ish, cool, thanks.

I have two seasons. Baseball Season and Movie Season. I watch movies (at home on DVD) fanatically all winter.
