G85: Royals 8, Red Sox 6

Royals - 000 304 010 - 8 13 1
Red Sox - 301 010 010 - 6 10 1
David Ortiz hit his 300th career home run in the first inning, but Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson could not hold a 5-3 lead in the sixth.

Boston had a golden scoring opportunity in the eighth. They trailed 8-5, but had the bases loaded with one out. Down 0-2, Mark Kotsay fouled off five pitches from Juan Cruz before lofting a sacrifice fly to center field. With Sox on first and third and two outs, Joakim Soria came out of the pen and quickly struck out Nick Green (who had singled and doubled earlier) on a filthy 12-6 curveball inside.

Dustin Pedroia singled, doubled and homered -- his AL-leading 14th three-hit game of the season; he also scored two runs. Kevin Youkilis singled and doubled and scored twice. Daniel Bard finished the eighth and pitched the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

The Yankees beat the Twins 6-4 during the day, so Boston and New York are tied yet again -- at 51-34 -- atop the AL East. The MFY head to Anaheim for the weekend.

***

Luke Hochevar (5.08, 85 ERA+) / Brad Penny (4.67, 100 ERA+)

Since May 3, Penny has been remarkably consistent -- and quite productive for a 5th starter.

A 3.68 ERA in 12 starts. At least six innings pitched in eight of those 12 starts. He's allowed two runs or fewer in half of the starts -- and three runs or fewer in 10 of the 12 starts. He is allowing a lot of baserunners, however: 97 hits + walks in 71 innings.

Zack Greinke (2.12, 203 ERA+) pitched last night, so the Red Sox will not see him during this four-game series. Boston plays in Kansas City September 21-24.

The Yankees (1 GB) play this afternoon in Minnesota (Aceves/Liriano).

***

Julio Lugo left the team yesterday because of a family matter. There was no word on when he would return.

David Ortiz's home run last night was #299 of his career. He has 773 RBI with Boston, tied with Rico Petrocelli for 8th on the Red Sox All-Time List.

Jed Lowrie was activated and optioned to Lowell (A). He went 2-for-3 last night with two doubles, two walks, two runs and an RBI. The earliest the Red Sox could bring Lowrie back to Boston is July 18 -- the second game after the All-Star break.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is in Fort Myers doing spring training drills, though it's in the heat of July now and not the relative cool of February/March. Francona:
[I]f you go down to Fort Myers in the middle of July at 7:30 in the morning, and the first day you run the shuttle and the second day you run the mile-and-a-half, he did a good job.
Steve Buckley says Wakefield should start the All-Star Game. Eric Wilbur says (and I agree) that's coo coo bananas.

When is the best time in the AS game for Wake to pitch though? I'd say 3rd inning or so. Let a fireballer or two go through the lineup once then send Wake in to slow it down. Anywhere near the beginning or end of the game and people are going to crucify him for the inevitable passed balls at a crucial part of the game.

Why? Once he's off the DL, can't they just call him up whenever they want?

Ish said...

Lowrie's not on the DL anymore. He got activated from the DL then optioned to Lowell and he ahs to stay there for a period of time. In this case, July 18th.

s1c said...

Grienke or Halladay should be the starter, Wake should be kept for the late innings as in extra if needed.

WEEI saying JP is asking for the top 5 prospects for Doc. Too high a price? I say yes. Make it 3 and we'll talk.

s1c said...

a-con - because of this "The option means that he needs to spend a minimum of 10 days in the Minor Leagues before being activated by the Sox. "

His rehab time was ending but he wasn't ready for the club (thanks to being hit on the knee). Therefore they optioned him.

redsock said...

I meant bring Lowrie back to the big club. I added "to Boston" to the post.

I don't think anything will happen with Halladay (who recently returned from injury) until this off-season, at the earliest.

redsock said...

Also, Greinke pitched last night. He'd be in line to pitch on Monday and the ASG is Tuesday. Not sure why he would not get the ball.

james said...

Can't see them trading Doc inside the division, but can you imagine how terrified you'd be to see him in a MFY uni?
Talking of 'hot prospects' look at Craig Hansen - I think he's on the 60-day dl and has a career ERA of over 6...

A Conformer said...

Just to make sure I understand: it counts as if he was in the MLB club, and got optioned to the minors? And therefore, the rules for MLB players optioned to the minors only being available for a call-up 10 days (I'm guessing it's 10 days based on the relevant dates in this case) later apply?

A Conformer said...

I could swear this reply by S1C, which makes the question in my second comment moot, wasn't there a minute ago.

9casey said...

I agree let the old man start

s1c said...

James - If you look at Doc's stats, the Sox don't fear him. 12-12 in his career vs Sox. 16-5 against the MFY's.

Look, I'm happy that Wake made the AS team, but to make him the starter is nuts. Consider it a lifetime achievement award and start Grienke (I want home field for the WS).

redsock said...

Terrified of someone in pinstripes? Please.

Sox vs Halladay: .271/.314/.411

4.46 in 37 games against Boston (the most games against any club).

Against teams Halladay has faced more than 13 times, that's his second-worst ERA. (His ERA against Texas is 5.36 in 20 games.)

tim said...

Can't see them trading Doc inside the division, but can you imagine how terrified you'd be to see him in a MFY uni?.

I can imagine that...and the answer is, not really terrified at all. In fact, I'd welcome the opportunity when the Sox play him.

Of course, he would win games for them against other teams that may normally have been lost, but, terrified? Hardly.

And Wakefield starting the ASG is ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as the ASG itself.

9casey said...

tim said...

And Wakefield starting the ASG is ridiculous.

If starting is ridiculous , then you must think him making the team is as well.....and s1c you say start Greinke you want home field advantage in the ws, so for us to get there, Wake will have nothing to do with that, right now we have the best chance for any AL team to make it to the world series, but if you want to place that on a Royal pitcher, then so be it....I just believe Red Sox players will take it more seriously then say a Royal player or an Oriole etc...at least they should....

Geoff said...

Yankees beat the Twins...again. Completing a season sweep for the third time dating back to 2002. The Yanks are 41-14 over that time. Why oh why do some teams just roll over for the Yanks?

redsock said...

Should we ditch "oatmeal" and refer to lineups as "needle and thread"?

1. J.D. Drew, RF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Jason Bay, LF
6. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
7. Jason Varitek, C
8. Mark Kotsay, 1B
9. Nick Green, SS

1. David DeJesus, CF
2. Willie Bloomquist, SS
3. Billy Butler, 1B
4. Jose Guillen, LF
5. Mark Teahen, 3B
6. Mike Jacobs, DH
7. Miguel Olivo, C
8. Alberto Callaspo, 2B
9. Ryan Freel, RF

s1c said...

Move Youkilis out of the 3rd and put Papi there.

Youkilis - 130 AB's this year hitting a sparkling .215/.342/.462 in the 3 hole. 118 AB's in the 4 hole - .373/.490/.644

L-girl said...

Stay with oatmeal. Let's not change our vocabulary for trolls.

s1c said...

Oatmeal? What about Sal?

Zenslinger said...

s1c, do you really believe Youk is slumping because he's batting 3rd and not 4th?

s1c said...

Zen, no, I don't think that is entirely why he is slumping. I think it does play a part though and just like FY sometimes it pays to move a guy back to where he was comfortable. Also, Papi loves batting 3rd so solve two problems move papi back to 3rd, youk to 4th.

tim said...

Ugh. Why do I always have to deal with these comments. In the gamethread where he was selected to the team, I clearly said its great and I'm happy for the guy, even though I don't care about the game itself.

IMO, it is ridiculous to start him because Greinke has been far more dominant thus far in the season. The All Star Game signifies, to me, a collection of the players who have performed the best during the first half of the season. In terms of AL pitching, Greinke > Wakefield. Please do not argue that.

Greinke has been the best pitcher in the league, with only Halladay close to him. This being in terms of ERA, WHIP etc. NOT the amount of wins and run support a pitcher gets.

I fail to see why you need to slam the Royals and Greinke in the second part of your post. WTF mate? "If you want to put that on a royals pitcher" and "Red Sox players will take it more seriously" - I have other things to do right now, such as watch this game, so I would just like to comment on how out of touch with reality and ridiculous I find these comments to be.

Also I'm not sure if you've checked a map lately, but KC is a hell of a lot closer to St. Louie than Boston.

s1c said...

Tim, chill man - then go put some coffee on

L-girl said...

Tim, I concur.

Zenslinger said...

I thought it was a nice gesture to include Wake on the squad - as s1c mentioned, "as a lifetime achievement award". Classy of Maddon to do that for Wake and for their divisional rival. But, yeah, his ERA was well north of 4 at the time of the voting, and such gestures aside, it's supposed to be based on results from this year only.

Hochevar had FY, Yook and Flo at 0-2. The result? No outs, 3 runs. Hahaha.

Oh, yeah, and Papi is crazy hot. I think we can retire the whole "he's back" thing. It's history. He just is.

Re Wake

I'm thinking that if the MFY had a 42-year old vet who had never made an ASG before and was given the starting assignment as a type of gift when he didn't even truly belong on the team at all, Red Sox fans would not be cool with it.

L-girl said...

Good night, Lord. We'll get a win for you.

Tim, your communication skills are just fine.

s1c said...

Ok, just finished running some numbers.

Minimum 50 IP's and 1 start, Wakefield is in the top 20 in all of baseball in Wins, HR 9, top 50 in IP's and ERA.

Oh yeah, his WHIP is a respectable 1.379. So to say he doesn't deserve to be an all star?

What pitcher would you put on the team over him?

s1c said...

Youk had to get on his horse there.

L-girl said...

those numbers aren't so impressive. top 20? and what stats are you using - wins, hrs? not much going there.

i don't know who i'd put in b/c i don't care about the asg and i haven't looked at every possible pitcher.

but as zen has said, it's a lifetime achievement award. it's not based on excellence this season.

tim said...

I think we're all in agreement that the Wakefield All Star thing is a "lifetime achievement" thing for being a pretty durable, decent pitcher with a unique pitch, very team-oriented and well-liked guy. He's not there based on pure stats, and even Maddon's admitted that (I believe I heard that on sunday nite baseball)...whatever.

And I picked a bad time to go away from this thread. Thanks Ofer. :P

L-girl said...

a plethora of doubles tonight

(l-girl - there is close to 200 pitchers in the AL & NL that meets that criteria so top 20 is top 10%).

Nick Blackburn, Jarrod Washburn, Jered Weaver, Kevin Millwood...all have ERA's (currently) at or under 3.34.

I read those first two names Zen posted and assumed that post was about pitchers whose names end with "-burn"

I was disappointed.

OK. Let's see if I have learned by see no evil Joy Of Sox mantra. It's just a game. We aren't going to win all of them. We have won 6 out of very 10 games this year. Nothing to worry about. 2004 and 2007 make the waste of a season known as 1978 (and 2003) irrelevant.

So it does not matter that we blew a 10-2 lead to a crappy Orioles team, lost 2 out of 3 at home to a mediocre if improving Seattle, were 2 hit by a rookie Oakland pitcher and blew a 4-0 lead tonight with a bullpen that reminds me of the worst Red Sox teams of my youth (and, well, 1978).

To worry about this team, on this basis, is negative thinking and we just don't need that kind of thing here.

(To Conformer: Lowrie is not on the list but was optioned to Lowell when he was activated. When a player is sent down, as he was, he has to stay in the minors for ten days before he is eligible for recall to the majors. I am sure he will be recalled to Pawtucket shortly.

Amy said...

Uch.

tim said...

Barth, when you're watching the Red Sox put on champagne goggles and hoist the trophy in October, are you really going to give a shit about losing 2 of 3 to Seattle in July?

We're simply focused on long-term results here, not short-term panic attacks. While recognizing obvious long-term problems, such as Lugo, we also recognize anomalies which are unlikely to occur again, such as blowing the Orioles game.

The problem I have is with people that blow up these anomalies and make it seem like this team is never good enough to win it all, all the while discounting other anomalies of this year and chalking em up to being normalities, like the fact that we haven't lost to the Yankees yet, including that 16-11 amazing, ridiculous win, among many other highlights.

What I've learned is that baseball is a season of ups and downs, over 6 (or 7) months and 162 games, there will be some shitty streaks and there will be some good streaks.

Our longest winning streak is 11 games and our longest losing streak is 3.

There's been some shitty stuff happening recently, yes, but as Manny said "it's not the end of the world" - that being said, I would not have enjoyed reading your downtrodden, doomsday posts during the 2004 or 2007 ALCSes.

tim said...

Sorry for feeding the trolls, guys. I just felt it had to be done.

L-girl said...

"2004 and 2007 make the waste of a season known as 1978 (and 2003) irrelevant."

1978 is irrelevant.
So is 2003.
So is 2004.
So is 2007.

When it comes to 2009, none of those years is relevant. The Red Sox's performance in any of those years have exactly nothing to do with their performance this year.

(Why the fuck does this guy bring up 1978 all the time?)

redsock said...

Odd: Barth brings up 1978 more often than any Yankees troll I have ever seen.

All I can say about 1978 and 2009 is that that many of the current players were not even born in 1978. Not the same team, not the same management. Even the 2003 team is not relevant: not the same team.

Time marches on.

Well, then, all you need to do is get Barth to stop complaining, and everything will be great.

I am glad you folks can watch this without fear that one of the best Red Sox teams we have ever had looks really bad during this homestand.

Sorry. I am unable to do so with the sunny disposition that others seem to have.

But my bad mood since the 10-1 game is not the cause of our troubles (if that's what they are since so many of you think it's nothing). It is the suddenly crappy bullpen and uneven starting pitching that is causing my bad mood.

Sorry if I have offended you by my concerns.

Huh, I always thought there was one KC, and the state border goes through the middle of it.

rs--my sense of humor fails me when you say 'there goes the pennant, all is lost.' I'm like, shit, if Allan says it, that's it, must be true.

Then I remember, ohyeah, he's making fun of doomers like me. LIghten up, I have to tell myself....

Amy, I liked your comment re "time marches on". Believing 1978 is relevant to this season is tantamount to believing in a c_rs_.

Ofer, I think there is a smaller, less famous Kansas City in Kansas. This KC is in Missouri.

Where Missourites are from.

I'll leave.

Your choice.

(Note: If you post provocative comments, they will likely provoke a strong response.)

LOL

the sarcasm must drive you nuts

Ofer, I think you are correct geographically, but because they are in different states, they are different cities. There cannot be a city that exists in two states.

hmmm, MDCs baseball reference page is sponsored by :

Fans of the 28 teams not named Red Sox (or Yanks) sponsor(s) this page.

Congratulations, Boston. You couldn't win a title, so you bought TWO - just like the Yanks. Open the wallet for Curt, Keith, and Johnny - end 86 years of frustration. 175M reasons never to whine about NYY. PS 2007: Open wallet for Beckett, Daisuke, Lowell

LOL

Don't let her kid you, ofer--it's 'Missouribrews.'

I want to go to Kansas City. I want to see a game or two at that park, and eat fried chicken and mashed potatoes at Stroud's, reputed to be some of the best in the US.

If we believed that one season predicted the next, then we should have been World Champs again in 2005 when we still had most of the 2004 team. Things just are always changing and never predictable.

Now that does not mean I don't worry. It just means I don't try and predict what will happen (good or bad) based on what has already happened.

Oh, I see. So it's a bureaucratic matter. Geographically speaking, it is the same city.

redsock said...

Of course, we TRADED for Beckett and Lowell.

L-girl said...

Are you sure that geographically they are actually the same city? I have to check a map. I didn't think so.

redsock said...

but this is baseball - facts have no place here.

My older daughter went to KC for a wedding, expecting a little cowtown with lots of hicks (typical Northeasterner bias). She loved it---said the food was great, lots of cool places.

johngoldfine said...

The cities may be side-by-side without being much the same. Hoboken and Manhattan only have a river between them....

Johnny? As in, Damon? I thought he was signed in '01 or '02, no?
(Why am I trying to think about this reasonably, instead of just laughing about it?)

A con - Amy and L-girl are correct except people from MO are called Missourians.

It is Arkansans or acceptable is Arkansawyers, or hillbillies.

Old joke - do you know why Oklahoma is so windy?

Because Kansas sucks and Texas blows.

They are across the Mississippi from each other. The river is the state line.

L-girl said...

It was once a huge blues and jazz town.

(I was kidding re Missourites!)

Ram Ram will not be available tomorrow night...

L-girl they are the same geo, just located in two states. Both sides though are pretty much the same, except MOs are more mulish.

Amy said...

Or is that the Missouri River?

A Conformer said...

Are people from Anchorage called anchorites?

The Mississippi goes through St. Louis, so I very much doubt it would go so far out of its way west just to pass through KC...

A Conformer said...

Shit. The Sox need a run for every 2 outs they have left, now.

johngoldfine said...

now we really are doomed there goes the season (I try for blithe Allanian sarcasm but wind up half-believing myself. Yikes, scary!)

Amy it is the Missouri River

Ofer, you probably know more American geography than most Americans (obviously including me). Our school system does a terrible job at geography (world and US), IMHO.
