Red Sox - 010 000 100 - 2 6 1Penny (5-8-6-1-3, 82) allowed six hits and five runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the Red Sox were sufficiently kept off balance by Rzepczynski, who was credited with his first major league victory.
Blue Jays - 010 320 00x - 6 8 0
Without one in the fourth, three straight singles broke a 1-1 tie and gave Toronto a one-run lead, then Bautista's double made it 4-1. (Penny bemoaned that pitch, a hanging curve, afterwards.) Scutaro began the fifth with a double and one out later, Lind homered to left for a 6-1 score.
Boston had taken a 1-0 lead on Jason Bay's double and Rocco Baldelli's single. Then they squandered a possible big inning. After Baldelli's hit, the Sox had men at first and third with no outs, but Jed Lowrie struck out looking, George Kottaras fouled to third and J.D. Drew grounded to second.
Kevin Youkilis doubled with one out in the third and was stranded at third. With runners at first and second and one out in the fifth, Yook struck out and David Ortiz grounded to second. Lowell began the ninth with a double -- and was stranded there.
Lowrie hit reliever Jesse Carlson's first pitch of the seventh for his first home run of the season.
Justin Masterson pitched two innings, retiring all six men he faced in the sixth and seventh, on 22 pitches.
The Yankees beat the Tigers 2-1, so Boston's East lead is back down to two games.
Brad Penny (4.71, 99 ERA+) / Marc Rzepczynski (3.00, 144 ERA+)
Rzepczynski is making his third major league start (and appearance) -- and his Skydome debut. In 12 major league innings, he has allowed seven walks and seven hits, while striking out 12.
Daniel Bard has retired 29 of his last 31 hitters (including four of four last night), 17 of them by strikeout. He has also stranded his last six inherited runners, dating back to June 16.
I'm trusting my stuff earlier in the count, which has allowed me to get ahead of guys. It's amazing what happens when you get ahead of guys.In Bard's last six appearances, he has thrown 77% strikes and batters are hitting .037/.036/.074.

I have noticed that Tek often gets off day games following night games, even when Wake isn't pitching. Preserving him for the long haul?
That's AB's twitter lineup too.
It was probably her feed. From the SoSH game thread.
Saving Tek for September, yeah.
Verlander/Sabathia, also at 1.
Rzepczynski
Is Eck around to try his luck this one?
I think I'll try the Jays radio guys today.
Welcome back Jed! I can't remember his nickname... and it's not in the glossary.
Just think, we never have to worry about whether or not Lugo is going to start. Yippee!!!
Rzepczynski
Is Eck around to try his luck this one?
Pretty easy phonetically: Zep-chin-skee.
That would still be a challenge for Eck.
FY!

Polish names (I'm assuming it's Polish, although it could be Czech or something in the area) have a tendency to look a lot scarier than they actually are.

Oh yeah. One of the MPs that supports the war resisters is Borys Wrzesnewskyj, pronounced Jez-nef-skee.
And of course there's our old friend Malphabet.
Castig mentioned the old nickname "eye chart".
That would still be a challenge for Eck.
Remy too.
The lack of news about Remy is disconcerting. Actually, the lack of Remy is disconcerting.
Heh, I just glanced at the Wikipedia page for Doug M, which I linked to above. It says:
"Mientkiewicz is notorious for his superb fielding ability and control with the bat."
Notorious?
Ian Browne was asked about Remy in his mailbag:
"There has been no public announcement ... Other than the fact that he's been resting up and recovering for an eventual return to work, there has been no other word on how he is doing."
Douuble.
Jay Ray Bay- we've missed you, buddy.
Be patient with this guy.
2 MLB starts -- 7 BB in 12 IP.
for those of you on game day and blacked out for whatever reason or a work, etc.

RUNS PLEASE
There you go. Thanks Nix, you made that happen.
1-0.
Pile it on.
OH YEAH! The Hip is safe at 3rd and Baldy comes thru!
Douuble.
good
Jedi should pull an Arod/Manny and hit a dong in his first AB back.
Unlikely, I know, but a guy can hope...
NESN!
I LOVE YOU, NIX!
No Joe, Markham is a suburb, about 40 mins away.
Jedi! Thanks Ofer. I couldn't remember his nickname.
Wow. That inning went from promising to over in a fucking hurry.
Thanks, Nix! Man, there are streaming MLB sites turning up everywhere.
No sweat everyone, living here in NY i get fucked on the saturday games usually. I'm drinking!!!
Dear NESN: Keep Jim Kaat.
DAMN FUCKING RIGJT RS! KITTY KAAT IS THE SHIT.
let's hope the jays can squander their second inning start too.
tp, cabin?
Uh oh
MAN the Tigers suck. threatened Cheeseburger Cheeseburger twice to no avail
Disappointing inning for both sides. I'll take it.
for future reference, they always have Soc games here:
http://atdhe.net/
I dont think it's always nesn, but hey...
BOOKMARK IT!
http://atdhe.net/
Got it bookmarked. But for some reason it's a lot slower than the one you gave today... and this hotel's connection is shitty as hell.
Nix I have a Twitter friend who's in the DC area and benefited greatly by your link. Thanks!
a yookle
I've tried to get as many links to games as possible if all else fails.
ENJOY.
RUNS PAPI PLEASE!
Castig talked to Cabin Mirror about Papi. Millar: "Big Papi is back! I told him, 'Don't change a thing. Keep wearing your bling!'"
This is awesome, Nix. Watching the Sox on my TV and the Yankees game on the computer.
Hesitant swing by Bay there.
OMG - I just got one of the shittier jobs I've seen in a looong time.
Gotta use the TV as a radio, I guess. And look at replays.
Squander by the Sox followed by a squander by the Jays, Good.
Kaat is good, I always liked him on the MFY games.
Looks like Penny got lucky there. Scary.
John Henry tweeted last night that he hoped Remy would be back soon.
"At Larry Lucchino's home watching Red Sox with friends. Great to see Jim Kaat this weekend. Hope Jerry gets back soon. Buchholz and Bard yes"
I remember when Kaat "retired" from YES and he said he was going to get a Winnebago and travel everywhere with his wife. There were also the jokes that when he was doing regular broadcasts that he wouldn't go past the mississippi
did you know that Drew and Matsuzaka are failed free agent signings of Theo?
Way to show off that arm j-bay
Tigers AGAIN fail to score.
did you know that Drew and Matsuzaka are failed free agent signings of Theo?
Who said that? That's terrible analysis...
Re Kaat -- Was the anyone who truly believed the Jays would contend in the East this year?
Clank. Passed ball.
Who's announcing with Don?
Are NESN games always on Channelsurfing.net?
KOTBALLA
COME ON PENNY.
Dice-K needs a mental adjustment and shoulder strengthening. Drew has been good. Not amazing but he's been fine. I understand the thought though. With the money they paid Drew he should have been much better than fine. That's the perception.
Sounds like you can hear Penny grunting with every pitch! NESN, this is not Tennis. Point the mic somewhere else.
Jeez it sounds like Penny's getting punched in the gut every time he pitches.
Who said that? That's terrible analysis...
Silva of BDD on the baseball show (compared them to Lugo).
Frag
You can even hear Brad spit.
Is HH still in Toronto? Don't get on that plane to Pawtucket!
FUCKING CUNT
Silva of BDD
What a shocker.
"NESN, this is not Tennis. Point the mic somewhere else."
:>)
That's the perception.
If Drew yelled at some umps, got his hat dirty and threw a batting helmet maybe twice a month, the mouthbreathers would love his current production.
"That's terrible analysis..."
It's BDD.
That is all.
Well, CHB, Merloni, Buck and Mcadams just let the comparisons slide without challenging him, so can't say it is just the mouthbreathers.
"If Drew yelled at some umps, got his hat dirty and threw a batting helmet maybe twice a month, the mouthbreathers would love his current production."
Drew could hit like 2005 David Ortiz and the baseball-wingnuts would find a way to hate him.
If anyone ever wants to refute racist theories of player-hatred, Drew can be Exhibit A.
Drew's OPS is .844. Perfectly respectable, even given his contract.
Jeter, thought to be having a great year (at least offensively) and paid significantly more than Drew, is at .860.
KILL CHINSKY KILL
lmao.
Don: "Tonight on NESN is the Jim Rice special... Dick Stockton is hosting it."
Kaat: "Oh wow! Good for him!"
Zen, very good comparison. Not that BDD can be reasoned with with numbers.
Well, McAdam should have said something.
So JOS1 is also Jim Rice night. You'd think we could sell this stupid ticket already.
GOOD POINT L. RS, Nixon is the classic example, though I breathe through my ears ;P
Maybe this Stockton kid can parlay that Rice gig into a decent broadcasting career.
Time to get sweaty.
NICE!
KILL KILL KILL KILL
Youk O'Neil there.
Youk could get 30% off at the donut shop I went to today on Bald Thursdays.
Yook O'Neil, I was about to say that. :)
And I have radio! But Castig's description was enough.
I wonder if they'd give Rico Baldy the discount.
squanderiffic
If I'd known it was BDD I wouldn't have called it analysis.
...I started writing a reply to the claim, then realised how dumb it was, and decided to just let it go.
And Ish, I disagree. I think Drew has been worth about what he's getting paid, maybe a bit more, comparatively.
this fucking sucks
I might admit I am more than "balding" if it meant discount donuts.
Well it's 10% off for a receding hair line, 20% crown balding 30% extensive hair loss.
Ofer I'm with you there. Seems as though the perception of most people is he's not been worth the money.
Big Donkey warming.
I cant believe we cant hit this little fucker
Bald Donkey up
Well it's 10% off for a receding hair line, 20% crown balding 30% extensive hair loss.
Seriously? That's hilarious.
fuck
Well it's 10% off for a receding hair line, 20% crown balding 30% extensive hair loss.
Seriously? That is hilarious.
...
FUCK LIND WITH A RAKE
Cocks and balls.
And dongs.
Ofer and I with the identical comment!
"Seriously? That is hilarious."
Seriously. My dad and my sister's boyfriend could get a good 30% off.
"Well it's 10% off for a receding hair line, 20% crown balding 30% extensive hair loss."
Ha! One of the few situations where men will exaggerate their cue-ball status rather than play it down.
So Allan, what's your donut discount? :)
Trade Penny! Give Buchholz his spot!
/kneejerk
We're doooooomed...
And by "/kneejerk" you mean me.
wow.
tigers dont let us down?
The rest of the promo says:
"Needless to say we are not going to mention your qualifications for this promotion. You have to ask to qualify. Here at Congdon's we do believe BALD IS BEAUTIFUL!
"Congdon's thanks Para's Pizza of Wells for creating this promotion. They celebrate baldness on Mondays."
So Allan, what's your donut discount? :)
32%?
And by "/kneejerk" you mean me.
Nah, that's my real opinion. Only without the exclamation marks and not because of Lind's dong.
Lind's dong gave me a kneejerk reaction.
So Allan, what's your donut discount? :)
32%?
Good man. Someone should buy you a donut.
One more chance for Detroit to get to CC...again.
I know it is stupid to dump Penny -- a frickin good #5 man -- when Smoltz is 42/coming back from surgery and Wake is also 42 with DL time in each of the last x season.
Still, I want HH up here. If Penny keeps his 6 IP, 3 R pace (not today though), I can wait until September 1 for Clay.
I'm hoping Clay can go more than 5 2/3 before I'd want him staying up.
I know it is stupid to dump Penny -- a frickin good #5 man -- when Smoltz is 42/coming back from surgery and Wake is also 42 with DL time in each of the last x season.
This is why I'm not on the Dump Penny bandwagon. I think we can wait for Sept for Double-H.
CANNAE WE GET ANY FOOKIN RUNS?
Kaat calls Dice "the highest paid long man in baseball, long reliver".
Well this is shitty.
COME THE FUCK ON
Well, I guess it all comes down to what you can get for Penny. I happen to think the Sox can get a fairly good player for him. With Daisuke supposedly back on Sept. 1, and Bowden and possibly Masterson as depth, I think the chance to make the rotation better and get a useful player for the future is worth the risk.
hahaha. this is getting too silly to get mad about.
Masterson, please be Masterson of old, not recent Masterson.
Ah, bugger. Kathryn Tappen's getting married today.
Time for one of those 12 runs before an out is made innings.
Jedi Dong!
JED ZEPPELIN!
Only 11 runs to go!
Woo Jedi! Nice. 11 more to go.
Shit, nice play.
Why 11? Is my scoreboard wrong?
JEEZ. Toronto's defense shows up.
damn these good fielders!
Fuck, another nice play.
"Time for one of those 12 runs before an out is made innings."
"Ah, bugger. Kathryn Tappen's getting married today."
Don't let that get in the way of your fantasies. I won't mind when LBJ gets married.
SCORE 5 MORE RUNS
Lowell would've had that one too...
"Time for one of those 12 runs before an out is made innings."
I saw that... But when Allan and Ofer both said it, I thought maybe they were serious. Ok... never mind. :)
I am serious.
That is *exactly* what time it is.
Question: are there any openly gay baseball players?
Answer: No.
Not currently playing anyway.
"The other" Billy Bean is retired.
There is no openly gay player in any men's professional team sport in the US.
Many of us, myself definitely included, are waiting for that line to be breached.
Answer: No.
Thought so. NBA? MLS? NHL? NFL? (those last too should probably be seen as a joke...)
That Billy is Billy Beane.
Ofer, see my comment above.
Nothing.
The pressure must be very intense.
L answered my question before I even asked it.
That Billy is Billy Beane.
Other way around, of course. I knew that and wrote it backwards.
"The pressure must be very intense."
Especially in those big piles in football.
NESN's mic picked up someone shouting FUCK! Add that to the list of Penny's grunting and Penny's spitting.
I'm actually more curious as to how many of the players are gay. What percentage.
Kaat plugs Retrosheet!!!!!!!!!
I'm actually more curious as to how many of the players are gay. What percentage.
And how it compares to the general percentage in the population...
Whenever players are interviewed about the possibility of a gay teammate, they seem obsessed with the idea that another man might look at them in a sexual way. As if (a) that doesn't happen anyway, (b) that alone is such a horrible thing.
I never understand that. Why are so many hetero men so horrified at the idea that another man might scope them out? Why isn't it flattering, or just neutral, nothing?
Ofer, that too.
Kaat plugs Retrosheet!!!!!!!!!
He always does. When he used to do the Yankees broadcasts, he mentioned it all the time.
Can you imagine if Babe Ruth was bi-sexual? (I'm assuming he wasn't.) He'd have no time for *any* baseball with all that fucking.
Yook and Ortiz go b2b then Bay, Lowell, Baldelli and Lowrie all drill doubles and we take the lead.
Now go!
It reminds me of a scene of The Sopranos where Uncle Junior tells his ladyfriend not to tell anyone that he performs oral sex. She keeps asking him why and he says, "Hey! I didn't make the rules."
I'd be flattered.
I'm not sure how I'd feel.

I think it's quite obvious that a guy teammate would be unable to control himself in the shower and grab you from behind, therefore traumatising you and making you gay too.
Can you imagine if Babe Ruth was bi-sexual? (I'm assuming he wasn't.)
I've often thought he might have been, only because of his voracious appetite. More opportunity. :)
Pure conjecture on my part. I have a tendency to see bisexuality everywhere.
Shouldn't we wait and talk about this during Smoltz's next start?
Pure conjecture on my part. I have a tendency to see bisexuality everywhere.
It is everywhere. Suppressed.
Especially in professional sports would it be understandable for someone to be gay, too. Wouldn't you think? But at the same time it seems like the most forbidden of places, along with the military, to be openly gay.
I'd be flattered.
...
I'm not sure how I'd feel.
Good for honesty, cool.
therefore traumatising you and making you gay too.
:-o
Ha ha, yes, it is catching you know!
This is NOT going according to plan, dammit.
Just popping in to ask this one question: now that we've given up on the failed Lugo experiment, how bloody long will it take Tito to cut this Drew-lead-off shit? It's worked out worse than Pedroia leading off, and that was pretty bad.
Ok! NESN's effects mic serves purpose! Laz Diaz telling him to pipe down. "Nobody needs to hear that!"
Was the HP ump telling Yook to shut up during Bay's AB?
I half-heard Don.
...
FULL BORE sighting!!
And of course, him being Youk.
This is quite irrelevant, but the Israeli army is supposedly one of the best armies to be gay in.
There's no way that sentence is grammatically correct...
Pure conjecture on my part. I have a tendency to see bisexuality everywhere.
It is everywhere. Suppressed.
Yep. That's why I see it everywhere.
Ish, I think you're right about likelihood and prohibition.
Same thing in women's sports. Plus women athletes are under huge pressure to show they are not gay, since that's an old stereotype of athletic females.
EVERYONE IS GAY :)
Maybe that was the real source of the tension between Ruth and Gehrig?
DET: 000 000 0
MFY: 000 000 2
Just watched a small chickadee on the cable wire extending from the house. Balancing very well. Looking around. Chirping. Then it took a dump and flew away.
Maybe that was the real source of the tension between Ruth and Gehrig?
That Ruth was a pitcher and Gehrig wasn't a catcher? (-;
My buddy (who is gay) refs football and basketball and is not open about it there, mainly because he doesn't want to alienate himself from the other people he works with. Basically, what Ofer posted is bang-on in terms of attitudes resonating in the locker room/showers among straight men. It's sad. He had a hard enough time coming out to me (and actually only did so as an accident!) because he thought I would react the same way and alienate myself from him.
Boy was he proven wrong!
Maybe that was the real source of the tension between Ruth and Gehrig?
What, Ruth hitting on him, Lou declining? We could write a great alternative history.
Nix has the right idea. Time to oppress the heterosexual minority.
The large difference between pro sports and the military is there is a repercussion for announcing your... gayness. In pro sports nobody's tried it, so we don't know what would happen.
The large difference between pro sports and the military is there is a repercussion for announcing your... gayness.
That and the whole killing thing.
Tigers are on the board with a Marcus Thames dong.
Fucking morons!
That Ruth was a pitcher and Gehrig wasn't a catcher? (-;.
lolz.
The large difference between pro sports and the military is there is a repercussion for announcing your... gayness.
What's is that repercussion? Is it official? I'm curious.
2-base error charged to Lowrie.
Not exactly Jedi reflexes.
Tim, that's cool. Since he got support from you, it will help him come out to other people down the line.
Ofer, being gay is immediate discharge from the military and it is official.
I've lost visual.
Dear Ram-Ram: You are supposed to be good.
A top-level Arabic translator in the US Army was recently discharged after he came out. And supposedly there is a huge lack of Arabic translators.
Ofer, being gay is immediate discharge from the military and it is official.
They need bodies these days, though, so perhaps not.
Ofer, being gay is immediate discharge from the military and it is official.
Oh, wow. If it was like that in Israel, 20% of people that turn 18 would become gay, too... hehe.
Policy has not changed - still immediate discharge.
US war resisters have tried it but if you have displayed any heterosexuality, the military tends to not believe you.
A top-level Arabic translator in the US Army was recently discharged after he came out. And supposedly there is a huge lack of Arabic translators.
Even in office jobs, where there's no risk of communal showers, then. Shit, that's incredibly dumb (amongst other things).
What about the repercussions of being discharged? That can have real effects on you down the road can't it?
