G96: Red Sox 7, Orioles 2

Orioles - 000 200 000 - 2 10 0
Red Sox - 310 100 02x - 7 10 1
David Ortiz clubbed a three-run home run to dead center in the first and Adam LaRoche went the other way in the eighth for a two-run Monster dong to lead Boston to victory. Lester (7.1-8-2-2-9, 109) had another strong outing and the Red Sox are now 1.5 GB in the East.

Other good hitting news: Jacoby Ellsbury had two doubles and two RBI and Jason Bay singled, doubled and walked. Daniel Bard (.2 IP) and Ramon Ramirez (1 IP), both of whom have had little work since the break, finished up for Lester.
Jeremy Guthrie (5.12, 89 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.87, 120 ERA+)

Adam LaRoche will likely get his first start in a Red Sox uniform tonight.

[Update: He's at first base, batting 7th, wearing #23. However, Kevin Youkilis has the night off, so Mike Lowell remains at third.]

LaRoche, on his expected playing time:
I've talked with Tito a little bit, but we haven't discussed whether it's going to be a platoon situation, or once a week, or never, or every day. I have no idea. I told Tito that I'm pretty easy, and I'm not going to complain much. You tell me when you want me to play, and I'll be out there.
And:
To come over and play for this club and have a chance to move forward in the playoffs is something that, when it happened my first two years in Atlanta [2004-05], I think I took it for granted. We haven't been anywhere close the last few years with Pittsburgh. I can handle not playing as much if we have a chance to play in October.
Lester has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his past nine starts. He has not allowed an earned run to the Orioles this year: seven shutout inning on both April 19 and June 29. ... Guthrie has given up 22 home runs this year, the most in the American League; he's actually tied with Joe Saunders. ... In five games since returning from the DL, Mike Lowell has hit .412 (7-for-17).

Also: A's/Yankees at 1 PM.

Whee.

With my on-board sound card the sound is directly affected when I have this problem. The soundblaster made the affects on sound less noticeable. Hmm.

laura k said...

Ish, I get the same problem with my desktop. I end up closing everything and restarting, then it works fine - until it happens again.

I have no idea why or if there's anything I can do about it. I just put up with it, not too good I guess.

SoSock said...

All right, I'm leaving with a lead.
Somebody get a save tonight, OK?
Heading to the downtown block music thing on Trade St.
Good times.

Rob said...

I just installed the Dell Systems utility right from dell.com, restarted and things look good. Did that last time too. But I wonder just how do I keep this from happening? And who knows. Maybe this isn't good and it just hasn't showed up yet.

Fucking computers.

last time we were at fenway, we saw hendrickson get lit up with the rays -- he did not get out of the first inning.

pound him again, flo.

I've got a feeling Papi will make that unnecessary...

Iridescence said...

Bleh...Missed part of the game and can only get the crappy Orioles feed tonight (these guys make Dave Roberts look like Scully) but glad to see the Sox are taking care of business.

And thank god the MFY finally lost!

laura k said...

So Ofer, are you in Toronto while we're in Boston?

laura k said...

Back from ice cream, score the same as when I left. Yay!

Benjamin, how do you know my bar status? I think I finally went on inactive status after doing nothing close to practicing law for 27 years.

All I know about selling tickets is that people do it openly right near Fenway. I cannot imagine the police arrest people if it happens that blatantly. As long as you are charging face value, I believe there is no issue. But what do I know? Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

A Conformer said...

So Ofer, are you in Toronto while we're in Boston?

It definitely seems like I'll be right here in Sandusky. Toronto has been almost certainly scrapped.

Meanwhile, we spent over $500 on our dog today. She has had real stomach issues on and off for weeks now. Today she is just so clearly miserable. It breaks my heart. But vet said blood work and x-rays were normal, just bad upset stomach. She put her on anti-biotics and special food, and I guess we will wait and see how she does.

laura k said...

I just found someone on Craigslist looking for a single ticket to our game. Fingers crossed.

Amy said...

Am I the only who keeps hearing "Nolan Ryan" every time they say Nolan Reinhold?

laura k said...

I hear it too - but that's not even his name.

allan said...

An honest day's work for Mr. Lester.

A Conformer said...

GDGD should add a "who's warming in the pen" function.

Amy said...

What is his name?

Nice crowd reception for Lester.

laura k said...

Of course now I can't find the correct spelling of Not Nolan Ryan's last name. Anyone?

A Conformer said...

An honest day's work for Mr. Lester... the molester.

allan said...

bard should finish this one off. he threw 18 pitches last wednesday and that was his only appearance since last saturday.

laura k said...

Oh, poor Cassie.

Have you tested for inflammatory bowel disease? It's often missed. Things can get very very bad before they diagnose it.

laura k said...

It definitely seems like I'll be right here in Sandusky. Toronto has been almost certainly scrapped.

damn

A Conformer said...

When Bard vultures a win, we should say he Fontinbras-ed it.

allan said...

Bard

ERA: 2.33
Fielding Independent ERA: 1.70

Amy said...

How do they test for that? All they did today was blood work and x-rays. Would that pick up IBD?

allan said...

bard is a beast.

Unknown said...

100.1 on that last pitch!

Rob said...

Sandusky sounds like a hoppin' town.

laura k said...

Some blood work might rule out IBD. Unfortunately the only way to diagnose it 100% is with a scope/biopsy.

That's a big step, of course. But I will tell you, our Buster almost died before a specialist said to scope him.

Everything our own vet did was practically useless until the specialist did that. And from then on, we were able to build him back up and straighten the whole thing out.

But some of the blood work your vet did might point to things that would either partly indicate or partly rule out IBD.

allan said...

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Yay! The new kid has a dong!

Benjamin said...

Welcome to Boston, Adam.

Rob said...

LaDong!

laura k said...

Laroche!!! Get that man a nickname!

A Conformer said...

Hahaha. I was just gonna write that I would like Laroche to get a hit. Guess he did. The Sox got a brand new dong!

laura k said...

...and the dog who almost died of IBD (but did not!) was also being treated for glaucoma and an anxiety/fear/aggression disorder...

*sigh*

allan said...

use the wall, adam. it is your friend.

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura. We will see how she does. If she doesn't seem better, we will ask about it. We are still on the Cape so she has not seen our regular vet, though the animal hospital we took her to here is excellent---probably better than our regular vet. She has had on and off stomach issues for years, but it usually goes away for months or longer before a recurrence. This is the worst it has ever been.

Iridescence said...

Nice LaRoche!

laura k said...

Amy, that is the exact profile of an IBD dog. Obviously it could be something else, what do I know. But that description exactly fits the dog that eventually gets scoped and turns out to be IBD.

allan said...

ramram up

Amy said...

And what did they do for Buster, once he was diagnosed?

laura k said...

Maybe when the test results come back, ask the doc about this possibility. She or he has probably thought about it and ordered tests to try to rule it out.

laura k said...

prednisone and special diet.

also, the IBD causes major depletion b/c the nutrients are not being absorbed. he was dying before our eyes - wasting away. so horrible. so we had to give him B12 shots and other things to build his strength back up.

those are the secondary issues. for the ibd itself, prednisone and special diet, and no deviations ever ever ever.

this was right before we moved to canada. i was terrified that he would die before we left - but we pulled him through.

....

2.5 months later his glaucoma took a sudden turn for the worse. and that was the end.

ok, now that allan and i are both crying again...

laura k said...

BUT ibd is VERY VERY treatable if it is caught in time! that's the big thing.

special diet + prednisone and a dog can live a full life with it. our neighbour's dog is 14 years old, has had ibd since age 7.

but you've got to catch it in time before it gets horrendous.

allan said...

actually, good to get ram some work. he's pitched only once since the break.

MASN's player of the game voting results:

LBJ 25%
Papi 23%
Roberts 52%

laura k said...

Roberts 52%

ha ha ha

Amy said...

Sorry to bring back sad memories, but I appreciate the advice. I will definitely ask either the vet here or our vet at home or both about it.

allan said...

We don't need Bard Rules because Tito does not burn the fuck out of his relievers like Torre did.

A Conformer said...

Whither Lester?

allan said...

Roberts -- who has doubled twice and not advanced past that base?

Hookay. Lester not a choice?

laura k said...

Oh no problem about memories. I think of him all the time. He was my special special boy.

I don't mean to alarm you, I just know that it's often missed. We were at the vet so many times, spent so much money, and Buster suffered so long, before we finally went to a specialist and got a diagnosis.

laura k said...

I see Allan is ignoring the Buster talk. :)

Benjamin said...

You think Orioles fans would vote for The Molester?

Rob said...

Not to mention Dusty Baker with starters, too.

Amy said...

Vet put her on I/D Science Diet---does that sound right? No prednisone though, just antibiotics.

Our first collie took pred for years for a skin disorder, so we have done the daily pill thing before. Also for our cats (not prednisone though).

Two away!

laura k said...

fast game!

laura k said...

Heh, daily pill. We've had so many dogs on so many different meds. We often have spreadsheet charts to keep track.

I would have thought Hill's WD. Hill's makes Science Diet but it's lower quality. Hill's is the RX-only food. WD is usually for GI trouble. Tala eats it for her sensitive stomach.

Benjamin said...

Fans don't like the 2-2 ball.

SoSock said...

Damn - Music off. Game on, tho!
And just in time for the last out, it apears.

laura k said...

But you'll have to hear the test results. The vet may be already on it.

SoSock said...

Spoke too soon :(

Rob said...

Looking at Brian Roberts in the dugout... Reminds me that I watched the Cape Cod League all-star game on NESN at Fenway Park the other day.

Roberts was there because his dad is the manager of one of the teams.

It was very strange to see Fenway virtually empty while a game was playing.

A Conformer said...

C'mon RamRam, finish it.

Benjamin said...

I think Jones's bat missed that ball by four feet.

laura k said...

So when we nail this down, we'll be only 1.5 back. On our way to reclaiming 1st.

Amy said...

This is prescription only. Both vets prescribed it, so maybe it is similar. But I will double check.

Again, thanks.

Dirty, offensive, comfortable water, today. Me like it.

laura k said...

you're welcome, and maybe it's the same thing by a different name.

i may have a ticket buyer! waiting to hear back.

see you all later!

Iridescence said...

LOL the Orioles announcer just said "The Orioles now look like they will be swept by Boston tomorrow". I won't argue with that but way to show faith in your team, idiot.

Amy said...

No more tests being run, as far as I know. They ran them all today while we waited two hours. But if she does not seem better by tomorrow, I will call and ask whether more should be run.

SoSock said...

There it is!
Double Dirty, been a while since we said that.

allan said...

LOL the Orioles announcer just said "The Orioles now look like they will be swept by Boston tomorrow". I won't argue with that but way to show faith in your team, idiot.

LOL is right, though I'd be wildly pissed at that (and so much more) if I was a Birds fan.

I said 2 of 3 was the bare minimum, but I expected a sweep. Go Smoltz.

Iridescence said...

Double dirty and a game in the standings. Awesome!

SoSock said...

Will the real John Smoltz please stand up!
Tomorrow I mean.

laura k said...

I meant the results of the tests already run.

LOL re stupid MASN announcers.

SoSock said...

Hate to hear about doggie problems. Our Noah is fighting a god-awful skin condition. Allergies I'm sure. We've tried ceflex (not sure about the spelling) and prednizone. Tried a couple of the organic foods, now using Iam's, which seems to help a little. Doing the medicinal shampoos, tea tree oil, etc. but it just won't ease up. Chews himself raw.
I'm getting desperate.

laura k said...

Sosock, that's rough. Our Tala has skin allergies, not as bad as that, but it is a tough nut to crack. Awful to see it too. Good luck!

laura k said...

If you haven't already, you might want to see a veterinary dermatologist. The specialists know so much more than the regular vets. We have learned it time and again - always wonder why we didn't go sooner.

laura k said...

Oh shit I gotta leave work! Bye!

laura k said...

Flipping channels, and here is Vin and the Dodgers. Yay.

tim said...

I can't believe this incredible winning streak the sox are on. Two wins, they've outscored their opponents 10-3 on this current skid and at this pace it'll be 2007 all over again.

I mean, shit - if the red sox keep up the torrid pace they're on, they won't ever lose another game this season. I can't believe we're seeing this before our own eyes.

This could quite possibly be the greatest winning streak in all of sports. I don't want to mention 2004 or anything but...this could be the start of 2004 all over again.

laura k said...

Perfect.
