Rice's #14 To Be Retired

Jim Rice's #14 will be retired by the Red Sox before next Tuesday's game against the Athletics.

Rice will be inducted to the Hall of Fame, along with Rickey Henderson and Joe Gordon, this weekend. (The Globe has a lot of Rice stuff today.)

Rice will be the seventh Boston player to have his number retired, following Bobby Doerr (1), Joe Cronin (4), Johnny Pesky (6), Carl Yastrzemski (8), Ted Williams (9) and Carlton Fisk (27).

The Joy of Sox gathering is also that night. I have one ticket left, so if anyone out there wants to attend, let me know.

It's so cool that this is happening the same night as JoS1. Although I'm neutral about the ceremony and number retirement, several people in our group are super excited about being there. It's great that it worked out that way.

That's awesome. I wish I could have made it. Good on the Sox for retiring his and Pesky's number.

Neutral? Why is that ? Is it because you were not a Red Sox fan during that time?

I suppose that's why. I just have no feelings about it.

Should I?

It's not everyday they retire a number, so yeah , the fact that it is jos1 and they retire his # on the same day it seems kinda of special, doesn't......

If this was before Wednesday's, I'd be there early. But I'd rather have the extra time with the other JoSers before the game gets going.

Who knows, maybe dinner will wind down and we'll get there in time or during it?

I didn't say it wasn't a special day - for him or perhaps for most Sox fans. I just have no feelings about it.

It's not like I have negative feelings! It's just there.

You know, I can't pretend I have a long history as a Sox fan. As a baseball fan, yes. But my Soxiness only dates back to my conversion in 2003.

You know, it's possible the ceremony won't start til 6:45 and they will delay the start of the game. That happens sometimes. Since they haven't announced the time of the ceremony yet, it might be close to game time, then we'll all go.

Where are you guys having dinner?

A nearby pub-type place called Lir.

I was there for the Pesky retiring of the number. The ceremony started at 10 till, and the game started a little late.

Also, Lir is a fun place. This is like Jos1 is like number 3 on my top 5 reasons I wish I wouldn't have left Boston.

I would like to be at the ceremony, and if we can, that's great. I was a Rice fan back in 1975. But I also want as much time to chat with the JOS group, though we can always do that during the game....um, just like we always do on threads!

I'll watch for possible ceremony times this weekend. The thing can't be that involved. Intro, unveiling, speech. Maybe we can leave Lir at 6:30 and still make it.

DAMN! You guys are so lucky, thats gonna be an awesome night. I remember back in the day as a young sonovabitch playing whiffleball doing my best Rice imitation. I used to RAKE! Ha.
Enjoy the game, sink one (or 6) for me.

I still have that baseball card. I gave away a lot of the no-names from the mid 70's, but kept all of the red sox cards.
