G131: Rays 5, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 021 000 - 3 7 0
Rays - 000 103 10x - 5 11 0
Lackey was looking pretty good through 5.1 innings. He had struck out six batters and had allowed only a solo bomb to Carlos Pena and a couple of harmless singles -- each coming with two outs in the inning. He had retired 14 of the last 16 batters and thrown only 66 pitches -- and he was up, 3-1.

Then:
Zobrist single
Crawford home run (3-3)
Longoria double
Pena intentional walk
Joyce walk
Johnson single (3-4), Pena out at plate
Upton strikeout looking

7th inning:
Bartlett single, caught stealing
Jaso single
Zobrist walk
(Jaso scored on Longoria single off Okajima)
Nine of Lackey's last 10 batters reached base. Once his meltdown was complete, the Red Sox managed only one base runner -- Ryan Kalish's walk with two outs in the ninth inning.

Boston is now 6.5 GB both Tampa Bay and New York (who beat the White Sox 2-1) with 31 games to play. Monday: Red Sox off, Yankees/A's, Blue Jays/Rays.
Example
John Lackey / James Shields
Scutaro, SS
Drew, RF
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowell, 1B
Nava, LF
McDonald, CF
Navarro, 2B
I didn't want to rely on Lackey to salvage this important series, but here we are. So, let's go, you handsome overwhelming force of nature, you tower of pitching power.

Victor Martinez loves to hit against the Rays. The Herald's John Tomase notes that Martinez's
.381 average against the Rays is the highest ever for a player with at least 130 at-bats. And his .425 mark at Tropicana Field is the best in stadium history among anyone with at least 100 at-bats.
And: Yankees/White Sox, 2 PM
Example
August 29:

1966 - Detroit's Denny McLain throws 229 pitches in a 6-3 win over the Orioles. In nine innings, he allows eight hits and nine walks, while striking out 11. (The box does not contain pitch data, but various sources claim it was 229.)

2000 - Pedro Martinez pitches a one-hitter and the Red Sox beat the Devil Rays 8-0. Martinez drills Gerald Williams to start the first inning, then retires 24 in a row before John Flaherty ends the no-hit bid with a single in the ninth. This was the game in which several TB pitchers were using Brian Daubach as target practice. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times writes that the game included "eight Devil Rays ejected, two bench-clearing skirmishes, four hit batters, a handful of punches thrown, two Boston players at the hospital ... [and] taunting comments by Martinez that there may be more to come". It's hard to believe this game was 10 years ago.

Thirteen members of the Vermont Lake Monsters reached base on Friday night, but only one of them got a hit. Three Connecticut pitchers issued a total of 12 walks. (VT pitchers walked nine!)

Eric Patterson has doubled and tripled and Jarrod Saltalamacchia has hit a three-run dong for Pawtucket today. PawSox leading Rochester 6-3 in the 6th.

PA: "The relevance of the rest of the season seems to rest on tonight."

A bit over-heated, perhaps, but:

If Sox win: 4.5 GB, 31 games to go
If Sox lose: 6.5 GB, 31 games to go

31 games:
6 vs yankees
3 vs rays
&
6 vs orioles
7 vs white sox
3 vs athletics
3 vs mariners
3 vs blue jays

Rivera walks Beckham with one out in bottom of 9th. Top of the order up for the White Sox, trailing 2-1.

allan said...

Juan Pierre FC. 2 outs.
Omar Vizquel up.

And he is a first-pitch hacker, fouling to the catcher, for the final out. Fuckin Pale Hose. FU Ozzie.

PA: "Big-game James: Is that the worst nickame in sports? What big game has he ever won? Shields has allowed 29 home runs, the most in the American League. He has a 5.03 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox this season."

The nickname apparently perdates his MLB career.

laura k said...

I wish you would stop quoting PA, or at least quote him much less.

tim said...

lol

While PA's assessment of how big this game is, is pretty dramatic;

6.5 back - Rays play .500, Sox have to go 23-8 to tie.

4.5 back - Rays play .500, Sox have to go 21-10.

Regardless, the Rays going .500 is a shitty thing to hope for.

Basically, the sox can only afford to lose one game per series for the rest of the year to make it close.

tim said...

so much for the lackey perfect game/no-no.

allan said...

rays have got to slump big-time.

plus we need to win tonight and sweep 3 from them next month.

laura k said...

I don't care what he says, he just gets far too much ink here.

laura k said...

So Manny will be a White Sock.

laura k said...

Castig: "Sounds like he quit again." (Manny)

tim said...

yeah, that would definitely help.

i wouldn't mind the rays kicking ass though, as long as the yankees slump and we can catch em with the help of two sweeps in late sept/early oct.

tim said...

nice steal, no steal!

allan said...

fuckin somebody better slump!

tim said...

not final yet according to rotoworld...sez dodgers "intend" to trade him tmrw

allan said...

see, i think coming back is remote but possible, and then i see shit like this:

6.5 back - Rays play .500, Sox have to go 23-8 to tie.

4.5 back - Rays play .500, Sox have to go 21-10.

and i have serious doubts.

our entire rotation has to get hot to pull this off. we can't be going 3-2 every 5 days!

laura k said...

WEEI just reported it is final, to be signed tomorrow a.m. FWIW

tim said...

remember how i was supposed to pick up glasses before the pawsox game?

well, i picked them up today - what a fucking idiot i was, should've got them a week ago! my entire life is now in HD.

laura k said...

we can't be going 3-2 every 5 days!

But that's what this season has been. Why would it suddenly be any different, esp with FY and Yook on the DL?

tim said...

we all wrote off oakland in march, but they're 7.5 back of texas and i'm seriously thinking they have a better shot than boston.

allan said...

So Manny will be a White Sock

Chicago at Fenway next Friday and weekend.

Way to go, Joe: "sounds like" is always good for presenting facts.

laura k said...

well, i picked them up today - what a fucking idiot i was, should've got them a week ago! my entire life is now in HD.

You sound exactly like I did when I first got glasses (around age 25-ish). We were at the Stadium and the scoreboard wasn't blurry! I thought it was just blurry, for everyone!

allan said...

If you don't believe, what the hell do you have?

tim said...

fuck.

laura k said...

I appreciate the never-say-die-ness, but I'm not good at pretending to believe something that I don't believe.

I'm here, I'm watching (or listening), til the very end.

Just a reminder, in case I am accused of givingupness.

tim said...

yeah, i felt like this when i originally got glasses too.

but new prescription + better lenses (with the non-glare/scratchproof coatings) = wicked awesome super good vision.

allan said...

heh, same thing when i walked outside of the doctors office with glasses when i was maybe 12.

vivid, bright colors and everything in sharp, wonderful focus. AMAZING!

laura k said...

If you don't believe, what the hell do you have?

Baseball.

Real life.

I don't need "belief". I am loyal with or without October.

allan said...

i wouldn't bet my paycheck on it, but until they are eliminated, i'll think they can do it.

laura k said...

OMG I HATE!!!!! anti-glare coating. Maybe they make it better now. When I had it, the anti-glare coating chips and flakes off, your glasses always seem dirty, even when they're clean. I hope you have better luck with it than I did.

But there is nothing like a new Rx to remind you of what you're missing!

tim said...

i tend to lose interest once they are officially eliminated.

laura k said...

Yes, please don't bet your paycheque! :)

laura k said...

I gave up on the postseason a long time ago. But I still love watching. I wish I could see more games - I had to miss a ton of games this season - but I just love watching baseball.

tim said...

hmm, hopefully that doesn't happen to me! if it does, it'll be time for some consumer action.

laura k said...

It was more than 10 years ago so the technology is probably much better now.

Kathryn said...

I remember a friend in college, upon getting his glasses, saying, "This is amazing. You can see leaves and shit." We quote that often.

Redsock: If you don't believe, what the hell do you have?

Tim: Fuck

Well there is always that!

Kathryn said...

My anti-glare has been great. My mom's, not so much. Be careful what you clean them with. I use the cleaning cloth that came with them and sometimes run them under water--no soap. My mom uses dishwasher soap, probably a bad idea.

tim said...

lol, that sounds like a terrible idea.

they gave me a bottle of cleaner and we have like 5 from the other glasses we've purchased over the years, so we should be good on that. also, i learned my lesson about using kleenex to clean them years ago - scratches the hell out of em!

tim said...

watching on mute, that truped me good!

"its in the exact same spot as last night's!"

tim said...

Atta boy, big john.

Rob said...

The head-to-head battles are what make or break it for me until they get to within 3 GB. So they have to win tonight, keep pace, then win the next series.

But furthermore, all the heartbreaks the Red Sox have had this season - what makes one think they wouldn't have those in the playoffs?

So for now, I watch for love of the game.

laura k said...

Btw, my issue with the anti-glare stuff had nothing to do with cleaning.

Rob said...

Not needing glasses is amazing.

Just throwing that out there as I duck tomatoes being thrown at me.

allan said...

we cna stick to mostly buchholz, lester and dice in the playoffs, and avoid lackey/beckett, if nec.

laura k said...

Not needing glasses yet, you mean.

allan said...

rookie gets rung up on the low strike?

laura k said...

I put "I don't need glasses" in the same category as "I'll never colour my hair" and "I look the same with or without a bra". :)

Rob said...

Both my parents wear glasses, so I'm sure I'm screwed on that. However, they both got glasses when they were teenagers. And I know my eyesight hasn't deteriorated. But I'm sure I'll need them at some point.

Later in life. Hopefully.

tim said...

what the fuck!

slingbox jammed up in the middle of that fly and skipped forward to a commercial - so im assuming that was a flyout and not a dong?

allan said...

or "we'll never blow a 3-0 lead in a 7-game series"

Kathryn said...

Hahaha L. You are exactly right.

Re the cleaning. I think that is why my mom's coating is wearing off.

laura k said...

"I'll take 'things you should never say' for 800, Alex."

Kathryn said...

Ish, come talk to me when you're 40. I used to say the exact same thing and then it kept getting harder and harder to read or do anything up close. This close vision deterioration sucks!

tim said...

sox put in a waiver claim on angels' C/1B, napoli.

deal unlikely.

allan said...

... and if you need glasses before you are 40, you're gonna need some different ones once you are over 40!

laura k said...

the farsightedness thing does suck.

my glasses are SO expensive - "progressives" (both far and near sighted and something in the middle) and "transitions" (change from sunglasses and back). crazy expensive.

laura k said...

let's let ish enjoy his perfect vision while he can!

Kathryn said...

I love the progressives. How are the transitions? They were really bad about 15 years ago or so. Do they work for you?

SoSock said...

damn...
Just got in, but before I could get settled in, my son comes in and says that the grandson has come a day early and I need to go get lunch stuff for tomorrow.
brb, I guess.......

Kathryn said...

Any other waiver talk for the Sox since Damon?

tim said...

yeah, ish - enjoy it.

cause once the first glasses kick in, it goes progressively downhill from there.

tim said...

see above, MGT!

laura k said...

I've always worn transitions. My eyes are very light-sensitive. I can never be without sunglasses, so it saves me from having to also buy prescription sunglasses and constantly changing them back and forth. I love them but I never knew there was anything wrong with them! I'm sure the technology has improved in these, too.

SoSock said...

I've used transitions since they were introduced. (My friend Chris, who came to JoS1 with me, is an optician, so I get the newest stuff at almst no cost)
I'm a big fan. Wouldn't know how to get by without them

Kathryn said...

Sorry Tim, I meant in addition to that :)

tim said...

I got myself a pair of ray bans in addition to the regular glasses - I like switching it up, although it is a pain to remember both - especially when you forget them at places (i.e. A+L's house - the last time the boston red sox were the boston red sox)

laura k said...

How's Chris doing, SoSock?

allan said...

big stick time, flo.

Kathryn said...

Well that's two votes for transitions. Maybe I'll try them next time. I have put off buying sunglasses because, as L said, these lenses are SO expensive.

I remember a college buddy who had them. They never seemed to get dark enough in the sun. And now that I think about it, maybe that was more than 15 years ago!

allan said...

small game's deep bend and twist/wiggle up to his set position is annoying.

tim said...

damn, was hoping for some catwalk action there.

tim said...

oh look, ESPN puts up the Ortiz stats for Beltre!

tim said...

stupid rays tank.

surprised peta isn't on that one.

meunier said...

I thought for sure the Ortiz pop up was going to hit the roof.

allan said...

oh great, they tossed a few more rays (not only one) into that small fucking tank -- what a dismal life that must be.

allan said...

at least they can't hear staats and kennedy ...

tim said...

another off day tomorrow?! come on! i guess i'll get some stuff done then...

laura k said...

surprised peta isn't on that one.

Or people who actually care about animals.

It is dismal. No team would keep any land animals in a tiny pen and show them off.

Ewww. Pena.

tim said...

i was about to say, john's gonna make it through 4 - this could be good.

well, at least it was a solo dong. fucking pain-yer.

allan said...

pain-yer.

laura k said...

Ha ha, was about to type "pain-yer" too.

allan said...

all three hits have come after two outs.

meunier said...

Rx!

laura k said...

OB: Mike Lowell is chatting up Longoria.

Maybe he means "chatting to" rather than "chatting up" !

YES!

tim said...

YAMIKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

Kathryn said...

More runs, pls.

laura k said...

Yay.

I can't thread anymore tonight. See you all on Tuesday. Or actually I won't. I will probably not thread since my mom will be here.

Anyway. Bye for now.

tim said...

WOEIWEAJSDLKAJDLKASJDASD!!!!!

nice play, longo!

laura k said...

YAY!!!!

Kathryn said...

Thank you Eva.

tim said...

Alright L, have a good night and good visit with your mom!

Amy said...

Hi, all. Just got home from the Cape. Good inning to tune into TV for!

Kathryn said...

Bye L.

Dr. Jeff said...

If joe morgan says "wicked hop" one more time I'm going to kill him. Or me.

Amy said...

Uch, Jon Miller. Better to listen on the radio tonight.

Kathryn said...

Hi Amy.

tim said...

hmm, mojo for 2010 is apparently spaghetti.

all this good has happened since i made my bowl of it.

good slide. keep this shit going!

Does that mean you'll change your avatar Tim?

Amy said...

Spaghetti > spinach. ?? But I love both.

Hi, MrsG.

tim said...

just noticed the twisty wind - that is outrageous.

allan said...

okay, lackey.
pls don't give it right back.

Amy said...

Damn.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Just getting here...

LOL at the Lackey video!

oh great, they tossed a few more rays (not only one) into that small fucking tank

I can think of a few more Rays I'd like to toss in there, starting with Garza.

tim said...

hey amy!

avatar is staying. at least until the off-season. 2011 will definitely require a new look though.

tim said...

A - how are things around home for the family without cody?

Amy said...

Nice, Lackey!

tim said...

who are you and what did you do with lackey?

allan said...

Lackey: Tower of Pitching Power!

meunier said...

Don't be a Debbie Downer Tim.

allan said...

A - how are things around home for the family without cody?

Okay, I guess. First weekend for Tala in her crate without Cody usually sleeping on the bed in the same room. And missing her in the morning and for meals and pre-work walks, etc.

Amy said...

Perhaps Lackey is an August pitcher.

??

allan said...

Yeah! Big changes for 2011!

Like JoS membership cards! Can't access the blog without $igning up!

tim said...

i want a master lock magnum.

they shot it on the commercial and it still stayed locked!

...i clearly need this level of security for my clothes in the locker when im at the gym.

tim said...

which membership tier gets me a signed redsock scorecard (photocopy)?

SoSock said...

Wow, a lot happened since I left! At least we scored more.

Trip to the grocery store must = shower.

tim said...

beltre!

SoSock said...

I freaking love Beltre!

Rob said...

Oh great. Bel-TRAY is limping.

tim said...

lowell making a cycle bid.

allan said...

I gotta map out the membership tiers over the winter.

Amy said...

Really, Allan? Is that a form of troll control? Or are you just putting into practice your border experiences?

allan said...

Jon Mil-LER is annoy-ING!

allan said...

Gotta get paid! This free shit has gone on for too long.

tim said...

hoping for daniel to nava-gate one into the RCF seats.

that works!

navagate 2k10!

Kathryn said...

Nava man.

allan said...

NAVA-POWERED!

SoSock said...

Nava! He ain't no ho....

allan said...

NAVA SAY DIE!

allan said...

"Gettin To The Playoffs Assassin Tito" is in the house, right?

tim said...

im looking at the hamilton CFL schedule (don't ask)

so silly. there's 8 teams in the league, and 19 games or something. play each team in your own division 4 times and each in the other once or twice, i think...

anyway, they have played 8 games so far, 4 of them against one team.

good balance there.

Amy said...

Jon Mil-LER is annoy-ING!

Yes, thank you for noticing. Yuck.

BelTRE. Who does he think he is impressing?

Come on, Lackey, no base runners.

tim said...

must've learned from pawtucket.

Amy said...

Fuck,

allan said...

oh fuck you lackey.

tim said...

thanks john.

SoSock said...

shit

Kathryn said...

A big fat pitch.

allan said...

whatever..............

Amy said...

I hate Jon Miller. Does he sound as happy when the Sox score?

Rob said...

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing the John Lackey Face.

allan said...

single, home run, double in last 4 pitches.

SoSock said...

Yank him, plz

allan said...

I no longer listen to him, so I do not know.

allan said...

anyone up?

tim said...

mdc up....great.

Amy said...

MDC up? I guess we are giving up the game.

Rob said...

MDC is up. Facepalm.

SoSock said...

Does he sound as happy when the Sox score?

I thought the same thing, Amy

Amy said...

Glad to hear I am not alone on Miller. I will have to listen the next time the Sox score, if they do.

allan said...

wjhere the fuck was that?

allan said...

outside, i guess.

good, load 'em up, asshole.

allan said...

jeemer, too!!!

Kathryn said...

wjhere the fuck was that?

I don't know, but Miller said it wasn't even close.

Amy said...

Baseball...clearly designed to break your heart.

VMart! Got him!

allan said...

v-mart can block the plate!!!!

SoSock said...

Awful pitch, but a great play

allan said...

ack. foot in the nuts?

Amy said...

And yet another injury? Why do the baseball gods hate us so much this year?

allan said...

what's that? the last 6 rays batters have reached base?

RedSoxDiehard said...

Could one of your membership levels include rewarding people who turn off the game in the middle?

(That's an actual RSN "benefit". 20% off in the souvenir store during the 4th/5th/6th innings.)

And don't forget to charge us for the privilege of buying stuff.

allan said...

what -- going to the physical store?

or shopping on line? you could do that while still listening to the game.

Rob said...

The Lackey close-ups are not necessary, ESPN, especially for the squeamish.

allan said...

9-1-2 for the sox

Amy said...

LOL, Ish!

RedSoxDiehard said...

In the physical store. As in getting up from your seat in the middle of the game, walking all the way around, browsing, spending money, then walking back. It's a wonder the people who do that can make it back to their seats in time to leave early...

SoSock said...

Wouldn't mind seeing a replay on that last pitch. Iniial observation was that it wasn't even close

Kyle said...

None of those pitches to Drew were close! And, he didn't swing on that called strike 2

allan said...

what's that?
9 of the last 10 rays batters have reached base?

tim said...

alright jeemer.

you're not in buffalo anymore.

time to step it up, kid.

Kyle said...

Lackey is DiceK Jr. They both last about 5 innings.

allan said...

rays don't have a duda, do they?

allan said...

jesus - artillery shot.

allan said...

wow -

tim said...

joe morgan baffled by okajima's head snap.

there it is.

SoSock said...

Nice, Oki....

tim said...

fuckin shit fucks.

SoSock said...

Damn bullpen

allan said...

even though joe watches only one game a week (the one he is working) -- and it is up for debate if he even pays attention to that game -- he still should have seen okajima pitch at some point in the last FOUR YEARS!

Kathryn said...

This is the problem. I love to think that we still have a shot at the playoffs. But if we get there, I don't see how our bullpen can keep us in the games.

Kyle said...

Why can't ESPN just allow Jon Miller to call them game without Morgan?

allan said...

jeemer's sox career ending on a down note.

Kyle said...

Time to tie it up boys!

allan said...

Why can't ESPN hire even one half-way decent announcer to do any of its baseball games?

Kyle said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
tim said...

Why can't the entire ESPN network go up in flames?

Fucking sorry excuse for "sportscenter" they have.

Kyle said...

ESPN only cares about football. Just listen to their stupid talk radio morons.

tim said...

ugh.

Kyle said...

Would be interesting to see how many games Lackey has pitched this year where he had the lead after the 4th or 5th but could not hold it.
