G133: Red Sox 9, Orioles 6

Red Sox - 110 010 600 - 9 11 0
Orioles - 410 000 010 - 6 10 0
Home runs from Marco Scutaro and Adrian Beltre keyed a six-run seventh and Lester (6-8-5-2-10, 120) settled down after being completely at sea in the first 1.2 innings.

Lester gave up six hits, one walk, one HBP, and five runs to the first 13 Orioles -- but then retired 11 in a row, striking out five of six batters at one point. He loaded the bases in the sixth, but escaped.

Meanwhile, the Sox chipped away. Ryan Kalish capped an 11-pitch at-bat with an RBI double in the second. J.D. Drew hit a solo dong in the fifth. In the seventh, Darnell McDonald singled and, one out later, Scutaro hit a two-run shot down the left field line to tie the game at 5-5. Drew walked and scored on Victor Martinez's double to give Boston a 6-5 lead. After David Ortiz was intentionally walked, Beltre's three-run bomb made it 9-5.

Boston kept pace with New York and Tampa Bay. The Yankees beat the A's 4-3 and the Rays beat the Blue Jays 2-1. The Red Sox are 7 GB the Rays in the WC, with 29 games to play.
Example
Jon Lester / Jack Arrieta
Scutaro, SS

Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowrie, 2B
Lowell, 1B
Nava, LF
Kalish, CF
Arrieta made his debut on June 10 against the Yankees. In 15 starts, the 24-year-old right-hander has a 5.10 ERA. In 83 innings, he has allowed 88 hits and 46 walks, for an unsightly 1.614 WHIP. (Which means he'll throw a complete-game, five-hitter tonight.)

Marco Scutaro's rotator cuff in his right shoulder hurts so much that he is unable to practice. "He can't throw", according to coach Tim Bogar, so any infield work Scutaro gets is during games. Mike Lowell says Scutaro
needs to be commended as opposed to criticized. ... [H]e's giving everything he's got and I think that's pretty good.
In August, Scutaro batted .237/.273/.298 -- batting either leadoff (22 times) or second (5 times). And he can't throw properly. That's not "pretty good". That's shit. And at this point, there's no reason to keep running him out there every night, a la Mark Loretta in 2006 (.193/.274/.252 in 33 games after August 27).
Example
September 1:

1906 - Philadelphia's Jack Coombs and Boston's Joe Harris each pitch 24 innings in what will be the longest AL game until May 8, 1984. The A's win 4-1 in 4:47. Coombs faces 89 batters -- going through the Boston lineup nearly 10 times. The innings-pitched record is second only to Joe Oeschger and Leon Cadore, who each went 26 innings on May 1, 1920.

2007 - Clay Buchholz pitches a 10-0 no-hitter over the Orioles in his second career start. (Dustin Pedroia liked it.)

Felix Doubront had an MRI and CT Scan on his neck/shoulder area -- both were negative. He has a mild strain of the upper pectoral muscle.

I think he might just have whiplash...

Castig and O' were speculating during last night's crapfest that the pitching staff might want to punish Felix Pie for celebrating his home run too much.

I am watching tonight partly because I have developed this irrational desire to see Scott Atchison plunk him.

I was coming here to bitch about being stuck with MASN, switched a few channels (MFY on Rogers) and came back and now it is NESN.

?!?!?!!

Amy said...

OK, home for a baseball game. I love the no stakes feel to these games. Just get to watch for the fun and beauty of baseball.

But seriously? Let's not let this team beat us again, OK?

allan said...

"Ortiz scampers into second!"

Amy said...

OK, one run in the first. Not a bad start.

meunier said...

Still no news on who the call ups are?

allan said...

i think patterson and salty were (or are about to be) activated and maybe richardson is up (since felix is off at the doctor). when paw ends its season in a few days, there may be more. reddick & ?

Amy said...

How is Scutaro throwing at all if he is in such pain?

Damn Lugo! WTF?

Amy said...

OK, I do care if we win. STOP IT NOW, JON.

Amy said...

So maybe this stress free baseball isn't so much fun after all.

Amy said...

Uch, I think I may go watch paint dry instead.

allan said...

what the fucking fuck?

allan said...

manuel up for sox

Amy said...

Is Lester hurt or just off?

Amy said...

Maybe he misses MDC. My sources tell me Manny was very upset to leave. Not surprising.

tim said...

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?

hey all.

allan said...

off, i assume.

ack - our power went out. where is the game? are we in commercial?

Kathryn said...

Got back from working out just in time for the bottom of the first inning and eat dinner in front of the TV. Now, that'll give you indigestion.

tim said...

how are you on the internet if the powers out? lol

in commerical. still 4-1.

tim said...

i know its only top 2. but MORE WINE!!!!!

or...some wine, at this pace.

"long wait" - make em pay!

meunier said...

I expected the O's offense to develop sometime this yaer

meunier said...

"how are you on the internet if the powers out? lol"

I assume he has a ups box.

allan said...

rays lost last night too. we crapped out on only one day on the schedule. we can do it. believe in mitch!!!

allan said...

why can't we get slick fielding shortstops like that?

Amy said...

So how were you on the internet without power?? Your cell phone? What is a UPS box?

meunier said...

Looks like there will be no game Friday at Fenway.

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201007.html

allan said...

the power returned.

tim said...

Your cell phone?

:>)

meunier said...

uninterruptable power suppy.

Amy said...

I need a UPS for my life. So do the Sox, apparently.

tim said...

UPS box...i think you generate power by stuffing mail into it.

allan said...

all i know is it's brown.

tim said...

ehhhhh! kalish!

allan said...

the mighty kalish!

meunier said...

There is a hurricane watch up for Cape Cod now, what a battle won by Kalish.

allan said...

nah-ver.

Amy said...

Don't talk about the hurricane. I am flying out of Boston to FL on Friday afternoon, and my parents will be driving to the Cape on Friday. I am already losing sleep.

tim said...

yeah, that SS is so good.

Kathryn said...

This is a fun sporcle game.

George Costanza

Kathryn said...

Amy, I hope all goes well. My college's football team is playing at UMass on Saturday. It looks like it might be beyond Mass by then. But Friday doesn't look good.

Amy said...

Isn't your college William and Mary? That seems like a small school to be playing UMass. Or do I have the wrong school?

Thanks for the good wishes. I really am nervous about it.

tim said...

soooo good.

Amy said...

Why can't we get such a good hitting and fielding SS?

allan said...

nice camera work, nesn.

Kathryn said...

Yep, William & Mary. UMass is in our conference--the northern division. We're in the southern division. We usually play schools bigger than us.

Kathryn said...

Amy, are your plans flexible? Can you wait and go to FL on Saturday?

tim said...

I don't think she'll have a choice if the flight gets cancelled! Or if other flights get cancelled and cause Amy's to be delayed/cancelled...its going to be tough, especially at logan. Good luck!

allan said...

not so subtle extended commercial by don and jerry for that shitty show with that asshole fitzy -- and remy mentions ace tickets. PERFECT!!!

Kathryn said...

Yes Tim, but it's better to be at home on Friday instead of waiting in Logan. Travel is going to be a nightmare.

Kathryn said...

I remember one year we were invited to go on the team plane to our game in Rhode Island. We were planning on going until some hurricane was headed there. We decided to stay home.

Amy said...

Sorry, got distracted for a few.

If they cancel our flight, of course, we will have to wait. But we can't just change the tickets. We tried to do that a week ago for different reasons, and the change fee was ridiculous. We are going for a family wedding. The wedding is not until Sunday, so if we can't leave til Saturday, that's fine.

Amy said...

Plus we have a two hour drive TO Logan so it's not like we can just turn around and be home in ten minutes...

Kathryn said...

Fire!!!!

allan said...

lester retired last 9.

tim said...

Very true, MGT. I remember when my dad had a flight cancelled - two months in advance.

He bitched about it, until I told him he was an idiot - at least they gave him advance notice and offered to put him on any other flight from any other airport in the area on any day for free! And he had ample time to book it. Not like showing up to the airport, sitting around for 4 hours and getting stuck on some flight with a 7 hour turnaround in des moines.

tim said...

i really hope lester's post game interview is something like "yeah, i figured we were playing baltimore so i didn't have to throw quality pitches, i mean, its the fucking orioles - same thing as last week against the jays. but they're a bit better and they have the home run king, and lyle ooooooooverbay, so they rocked me before i could settle in. don't worry about it, when we play good teams like tampa on friday, i'll try. fuck baltimore"

Amy said...

I thought everyone left. I guess Allan just lost power again. Are you having a storm up there?

allan said...

no. no idea what is going on. not sure if it is us or the neigborhood. but it's annoying.

allan said...

hendrickson = runs for us!

allan said...

each time, only for 2-3 seconds, but enough time that everything had to re-set.

tim said...

wtf

i thought the game went to commerical and then shawn camp came in pitching...tv randomly switched to jays game.

tim said...

keep yer crazy voodoo power away from my channels!!!!!

Amy said...

Damn

Zenslinger said...

Have given up hope for the postseason. But not for this game.

Amy said...

117 pitches. Take him out before you kill him. We will need him next year.

allan said...

"I'll let him give up 2 more runs, then pull him."

Kathryn said...

Got him.

Tim, I wish I had your creative cooking skills. And even if I did, I wouldn't have half of that stuff on hand. Impressive.

allan said...

yeah, that sounded great. ... anything with goat cheese is great.

Amy said...

Tim always makes me hungry.

Our dinner: salad and scrambled eggs.

Amy said...

We did have goat cheese on the salad though.

tim said...

maybe he'll throw a CG! yay tito!

i seriously question some decisions that are made. bard didn't pitch last saturday because they don't want to burn him out with a focus for 2011. all these prospects are getting daily playing time - with a focus for 2011.

but scutaro is run out there every day with a bum arm, while we have a more than able backup option for him (lowrie ss / hall 2b). focus for 2011 maybe? he is signed to a 2 year...

tim said...

haha, it was all leftover stuff from a goat cheese dip thing i made for a dinner last week. and generic condiments. except the hamburger, that was frozen.

amy, i almost went that route - we were going to have breakfast sausages, eggs and pancakes for dinner. but i can't do breakfast dinner, or eggs for dinner at all. i dunno why, its just weird to me.

Amy said...

I LOVE breakfast for dinner or for lunch. Eggs, pancakes, French toast---good ANY time. I even have eaten cold cereal for dinner when feeling really lazy. I never eat this stuff (except the cereal) for real breakfast---too heavy to start the day. But for lunch or dinner, count me in!

tim said...

jamie oliver: "if you're lucky, you're going to live for about seventy-five years and you're going to be eating three times a day, every single day for the rest of your life - you might as well learn how to cook properly and enjoy it!"

thats what i figure, may as well eat something decent if i have to eat.

tim said...

i used to not want to eat for a couple/few hours after waking up, because of it being too heavy. but i started eating breakfast recently and now i'm hooked.

SCUTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Good philosophy. I'd be happy to follow it, if someone else would cook for me. Otherwise, I just make what is easy.

SCUTARO! So much for the sore shoulder???

tim said...

THANKS JIMI!!!!!!

meunier said...

WOO HOO!

Benjamin said...

Yay.

allan said...

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathryn said...

SCUTARO!!! Maybe that's why he's still in the game!!!

Zenslinger said...

Damn now Scooty.

allan said...

dear tito: do not bring in jeemer.

tim said...

anyway as i was saying, breakfast has also significantly decreased my coffee intake. probably from the energy paks inherent in, you know, food.

Amy said...

I think Scutaro is underappreciated. But I do worry about him playing with a sore arm. That's just stupid.

tim said...

deffy bard.

tito ordered marco to hit that dong.

"that tim fucker is posting shit about me again!"

Amy said...

I wake up happy to eat breakfast. Same thing every day. Cranberry juice, raisin bran, skim milk, and green (decaf) tea. I am so boring.

meunier said...

My MLB TV feed keeps skipping

allan said...

I think Scutaro is underappreciated.

Scutaro is bad.

(I saw you and L were slagging me when I was in Buffalo.)

Amy said...

No Jeemer, no Atchison.

Who else we got?? No MDC.

Amy said...

Hehehe, Allan. Yes, we think you fail to see his strengths. But if I have a choice of keeping Scutaro or Beltre or Ortiz or VMart, I admit that Scutaro would be the bottom of that list.

Can we keep all four?

tim said...

raisin bran is cereal!

ugh, cranberry juice. can't do that early either! OJ for me.

i can't do the same thing everyday either, i literally get sick of it. i have about 3 or 4 breakfasts i alternate. but yeah, generally light like that unless its a weekend. then its eggapalooza.

tim said...

Can we keep all four?

scuts here for 2011. fine. let him lead iglesias in.
v-mart i would be ok with a 2-3 year deal.
ortiz, give him the 1.
beltre will demand a big one after this year, could've been 'lightning in a bottle' type deal here, and im afraid the red sox will go all lowelly on him with a big contract then he will go all lowelly.

tim said...

yeah! put a run on the board! give jonny the win!

Amy said...

Hey, Tim, Lowell's not been all that bad.

SAFE!! We are ahead!

Benjamin said...

Yay yay

Kathryn said...

FIRE is full of speeeeeed.

tim said...

RUN JD!!!!! RUN YONDER THE CHARIOTS OF FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A LEAD!!!!!!!

BOGEY IS A GENIUS!!!!!

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, LESTER GETS A CHANCE FOR A W!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

or as remy put it: "a point" on the board

tim said...

i like mike.

i just feel like he could be thrown out at first on a bouncer to the triangle at fenway.

Amy said...

Lester is happy. Doesn't he know W-L doesn't matter?

Tim, I am a creature of habit. Same breakfast, same lunch (yogurt) almost every day. Same guy for close to 40 years. Same job for almost 30. What can I say? Boring!

tim said...

OH FUCKING EH!!!!!!

BELTED!!!!!!!

Kathryn said...

GET OUTTA HERE!

The Belter!!!

Benjamin said...

They keep coming, eh.

Amy said...

Well,

GONE!

allan said...

HEAD RUBBING DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tim said...

suck it, showalter.

tim said...

mitch williams just cackled.

Amy said...

Beltre MUST stay. I don't think he is as likely to become Lowelly just yet.

allan said...

beltre: "the price goes up every day"

tim said...

see, tito is lurking tonight and telling people to hit dongs when i post negative comments.

guess lowell did not comply.

tim said...

boy i sure hope they trade this bard asshole...

Zenslinger said...

Good God, now I can feel a little relief. Runs. Runs. I still like them.

tim said...

i feel so silly, we get a lead and here i go checking scores.

rays up 2-1, going to the 9th.

after all that talk about lester's big W, i'm surprised their not poo-pooing the lack of save for papelbon.

Amy said...

I am not checking the other scores. I truly am just enjoying this game. Living in the moment.

tim said...

HRking19 up for T.O.

Amy said...

Don't talk too soon, Tim. One run, and it is a save opportunity for Papelbon.

fusionmouse said...

Well, hello all.

This game has turned around nicely, BUT I'M STILL STEAMED about Tito asking Bill Hall (17 homers on the season) to BUNT with nobody out and men on first and second down by one run. WTF! the bunt was "successful" bunt no runs scored in the inning. I might understand it if you have a bad, weak hitter like Cash.

tim said...

Jason Varitek (foot) said Wednesday that he is ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment.

Way to go varitek, planning your rehab as the minor league season ends!

tim said...

yay

allan said...

bard threw 12 pitches in the 7th. he *should* start the 8th ... can tito use only bard and bot?

tim said...

with the doubie brother not available...yes.

worst case, hall can come in.

tim said...

wells tripled, jays have tying run at 3rd with 2 outs. buck up.

Amy said...

There you go. Save opportunity.

Zenslinger said...

Check out this Family Circus.

allan said...

HEY HEY HEY!!!

Amy said...

Cool website, Zen. I liked refreshing and finding other quotes.

Zenslinger said...

It's fun to see all his follow-your-ego macho philosophy coming out of those innocent cartoons. It somehow criticizes and appreciates both the philosopher and the Family Circus.

fusionmouse said...

Neitzche... always good for a laugh!

Zenslinger said...

If we lose this game, I'm going to fling my balls on a fire.

Amy said...

Can we please get three easy out? I am tired.

tim said...

i'd appreciate that.

Amy said...

Yes, some of the juxtapositions are rather jarring. Some seemed to just fit. Weird.

Amy said...

OK, there's one.

fusionmouse said...

Ya know... I used to be thrilled when I heard the DKM's Shipping up to Boston on the Radio (WEEI) but now I get an uncertain queasy feeling...

Maybe I'm channeling Amy's feelings about Bot.

tim said...

uno!

Benjamin said...

Classes start, Amy?

tim said...

dos!

Amy said...

Two.

It's ok, Fusionmouse. It's good not to be alone.

tim said...

ouch!

shame joe west wasn't behind the plate.

allan said...

ouch.

meunier said...

Kidney punch from the foul ball, ouch.

Amy said...

Yes, Benjamin. Second week already. I have already taught four Contracts classes and four Copyright classes.

tim said...

i thought kidneys were closer to your back..

meunier said...

He may have to go to the hospital now

Amy said...

That looked painful. Where do they get a new umpire from?

tim said...

......

tim said...

second base.

just like how they do it in good ole buffalo. (minors have only 3 umps - home, 1b and 3b/2b rover)

allan said...

joe west ....

yeah. "stand up, joe, you're slowing down the game, ya fookin wimp. chop chop. let's go! time's a-wastin'"

Benjamin said...

i thought kidneys were closer to your back..

So are some of his other parts now, judging by how hard they were hit.

allan said...

1 more pitch, bot.

tim said...

looked like a crotch shot. upon further review, looked like it hit his arm.

Amy said...

Interesting. I've never seen this happen before.

er, pitch!
