White Sox - 010 000 204 - 7 13 1Jonathan Papelbon threw 48 pitches and blew his seventh save of the season. After he allowed two hits with two outs to tie the score at 5-5, he, Dustin Richardson, and Robert Manuel combined to walk four straight Chicago batters to give the White Sox the lead, the win, and the series sweep. And I'm like, Fuck You.

Dr. Nick is on a roll. from his Notes column today:
"Apropos of nothing ... 3. When men were men: Tom Glavine made seven starts at the end of the 1992 season with a broken rib ..."
Wait - he mentioned it twice!
"... and they must formulate some kind of plan for Jacoby Ellsbury, who played in only 18 games this season because of five broken ribs, one of the great head-scratchers in the history of sports medicine."
I half-expect Nick to go out for BBQ ribs tonight and work that into a crack about Ellsbury in whatever the fuck he writes next.
BRef: After 14 minor league seasons (all with the Tigers), catcher Max St-Pierre made his major league debut last night -- and got a hit.
Picked off.
Beckett-dini
Dr. Nick is on a roll
Amazing. Friggin amazing. It is now considered a medical mystery why one cannot bat and play OF effectively with 5 broken ribs.
And of course it must be mentioned at least daily, if not more frequently.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS MAN????
(Rhetorical q, no need to answer.)
Remy is being a real sponsor whore today. Every time Don reads an ad, Remy makes a comment: "Nothing like a cold Sam Adams" or "After the game, I have to go to CVS". ... Must be a new thing they are forced to do.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS MAN????
Nothing. He is a baseball reporter in Boston.
Oh fucking hell. There's a "guest" in the booth doing an ad for Sanibel / Ft Myers beaches. Turning the entire inning into an extended commercial and there's nothing I can do about it if I want to hear the game.
FUCK YOU RED SOX RADIO
Beckett has nothing left.
I give up. It's brutal to have an extended ad playing right in my ears (headphones at work). I'll just have to miss the half-inning.
V-Mart block. Nice job.
Again, BS-ing about the lotto.
I gave in and heard the ad person say that 2012 when the new ST facility opens will be the 100 yr anniversary of the Boston Red Sox.
Back to no sound.
Beckett has nothing left.
He's grinding it out, tho.
Can it be true? Do we have A LEAD???
First lead we've had in the whole series.
What was that interaction between Papi and Buehrle on Papi's way off the field?
Everything. Remy is now adding some personal comment at the end of every. single. ad.
Castig: Josh Hamilton ran into a fence last night and has bruised ribs, "feels like he was in a car wreck".
OB: We know how that goes - ribs.
Another wimp, eh?
Blue Jays - 202 011
Chokers - 001 00
Hughes spittin' the bit.
One good thing, I guess, is not hearing about magic numbers yet.
Everything. Remy is now adding some personal comment at the end of every. single. ad.
Maybe he was told to atone for mangling all those promos.
magic numbers and tragic numbers
ALE: MFY's # over us is 17
WC: FKR's # over us is 20
:>)
I feel like Remy lost a bet or something and has to do this.
Nah, it's probably a lame attempt to make viewers feel like they are not enduring a commercial every 45 seconds.
Good to know that Remy read this morning's Globe "from the first page to the last page".
What's the crowd noise I'm hearing on the radio - the wave?
they are making this broadcast absolutely unlistenable.
Now Remy's talking about all the drugs he takes.
"It's great to get old. The golden years, they call them."
No mention of a drug store, though.
Also Don asked him where he was having dinner tonight. "I can't say." (Yeah, because the restaurant has not paid NESN any $$$!)
this is utterly amazing. i mean that honestly. i've never heard anything like it.
every time don speaks, i get ready. and remy chimnes in. every time. even if it is only 2 or 3 words.
i thought he couldn't do anything with the waterborne paint.
I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He didn't say anything about New York Life... He's slipping.
Surprised that Don isn't commenting on the promos that Remy is doing.
jeemer up.
... or the "waterboard" paint, as it sounds sometimes.
Doesn't feel like we're leading...
in another minute, we might not be.
Faaaack.
Argh
There you go
dumb throw, bard.
microwave 3 for 3 right now.
that was productive. pfft.
DONG!!!!!!!!!!!
CLEAN UP ON AISLE 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EXTRA MART!!!!!!!!!!!!
That had a pleasant elevation.
jeemer in.
That had a pleasant elevation.
And it moved out in the right direction.
Oki? Oh my god.
bot and manuel up
joining the world of missing baseballs ...
thanks for swinging at ball 4 and popping out!
I know it's wrong, but I find myself cheering for Manny PHing against the Sox - to shut up the boo birds.
Hey!
PAT says "BOT"!
showdown.
Can't help it - right now I like Manny more than this lame-o Red Sox team :(
I'm with you, L. I was actually happy to see Manny hit a dong when I saw him in June when the Dodgers came to town.
Well, that was one way to do it.
Ish, cool :)
Poor acting job by MBM.
MFY and FKR losing. We need a win.
Yay! Manny got (a) hit!
;)
damn, bot is holding his set about a half-second longer than you would think he'd be able to get away with before the batter calls time. every time!
I thought that ball actually hit him. Still bad acting.
Here I am in awful tropical FL, missing baseball and New England and my cats and dog. How is everyone? What's the score? I have only a few before I have to get dressed for the wedding.
bot is walking the tight rope.
4-3 sox, top 8th, one out, cws on 1st and 2nd. just got a K for out #2.
Bot pitching the 8th? or on tightrope getting ready for 9th?
Amy! That's so deliciously BAD of you!
this is interesting.
papelbon is at 15 pitches -- how far will he go in the 9th? 30? 35?
We're going to need some more runs. Just a thought.
I hate it when Papelbon comes in early. Three outs is agonizing enough.
Michael?? What?? I don't think I meant anything bad! :)
beltre starts bottom of 8th with a double off the top of the wall in lcf!
Hi Amy!!! Hope you're surviving the Sunshine State ok.
Lowell pops out.
With Hall up, wild pitch puts AB on 3rd.
Not sure if my last comment went through. Netbook is cranky and only has IE, which I hate.
Anyway, I said--thanks, Allan, for the play by play. And I HATE FLORIDA. Sorry if this is a duplication.
Amy. I was congratulating you. I know from the thread the other day you didn't want to fly down there this weekend; I thought it was great that you're threading while at the wedding. It seems slightly naughty to me. :)
You all heard what Rico Baldy did today?
Why do you hate Florida, Amy? Just curious, I lived there a long time.
9-pitch at bat for Hall, little grounder to shortstop. contact play and beltre scores.
5-3 red sox.
and inning is over.
5-3, bot in bot 9 coming up!
I will keep my opinions about Florida to myself.
baldy? no.
Tom, it is hot, plastic, ugly, preplanned, humid, etc. Nothing feels real here. And I am in Ft Lauderdale.
TOR - 202 011 100 - 7 11 1
MFY - 001 001 100 - 3 9 0
FKR - 001 004 200 - 7 11 1
BAL - 202 004 00x - 8 10 1
Vizquel: bbbccff F8.
I concur with Amy about Florida, and then some.
Rico hit a HR on his 1st AB w/ the Rays today - 1st AB of his season.
Rios: bcfbfbb
walks. tying run at plate, 1 out
papelbon at 30 pitches
(season high is 32)
andruw jones PH for konerko
pitch is strike - rios to 2nd
Jones: c (Rios to 2B) sb
(now at season high 33 pitches)
Uh oh, glad I can't see what happens. But waiting for the updates is nerve-racking. Or is it wracking? I never can remember.
Amy - I sympathize, but have some feelings for the place - I grew up south of Miami in the seventies. There is something to be said for going barefoot in February.
Jones: csbffc
looked outside, but 2 outs
bot at 36 pitches; sox pen quiet
Quentin up, fouls first pitch back. 0-1.
Quentin: f
Richardson and Manuel up now.
I prefer to wear shoes and live in civilization, but each to his own.
(I hate heat and humidity, so going barefoot means little to me.)
Tom, I don't mean to be insensitive to your nostalgia! I love warm weather in winter, but prefer some place less...like this!
Shit.
Quentin: fbb - bloop single to CF, run scores, and he hustles into 2B as no one was at bag
Bot at 40 pitches ...
Last time he threw 40 or more pitches: Aug 20, 2006
Good thing Beltre belted that one.
oh holy crap, we're tied
Castro line drive to CF. Kalish to huis left, dives, falls for a hit, run scores. TIE GAME
7th blown save.
Having listened to people trash my hometown all my life, I feel no compunction trashing someone else's.
Ramirez: bfb
bot at 44
"Papelbon blown save" search on google yields 9210 results.
Have I mentioned how much I do not like Papelbon lately?
At least the stakes are low at this point. BUT DAMN YOU, PAP.
Now I will not be able to be here for the end of the game.
OK, hope they win, but I have to get ready.
shit, can't thread now. later, all. amy, enjoy the wedding and safe travels home.
sox, win it for RSDH! at the game today.
bot now at 45, ties most pitches in relief outing. sept 12, 2005
Thanks again, Allan, for the PBP. I appreciate it. Guess my cellphone will buzz me with the final score when the game is over.
A.Ramirez: bfbsbfb
BB. runners at 1st and second
bot at 48
Stay cool, Amy!
tito comes out -- buh bye bot. asshole.
richardson in.
Thanks, L. See you all when I return to civilization!
Bot's line: 1.1-2-2-2-2, 9 BF, 48 pit, blown save #7; still responsible for 2 men on base.
hey - we have
kalish
mcdonald
patterson
in the 9th!!!
RSDH must be a fine mood.
full count BB to teahen, loads bases for beckham
manuel in
Amy must have gone back to the wedding, has smashed her mobile device, or her head exploded.
GET A GODDAMN OUT!!!
Maybe RSDH will see a walk off. My daughter was at Fenway earlier this year and Pap blew the lead in the 9th only to have the Sox come back and win in the bottom half. I think it was the walk off error against the Tigers??
She had to get ready, said g-byes.
Re Amy, maybe all three.
2 pitches in the exact same spot.
one is a called strike
one is a ball
don't you fuckin dare walk in a run.
oh fuck you.
10 pitch BB.
3rd walk in a row.
white sox 6-5.
Three walks in a row!! Give me a f**ing break.
He walked in a run.
This is horrible.
We're a fuckin' hearty bunch of masochists, aren't we?
this is hilarious.
keep walking guys, you worthless shits.
10th batter of the inning for Chicago.
A smile of resignation.
We're a fuckin' hearty bunch of masochists, aren't we?
Ha, yes. I wish my father-in-law had needed my help this afternoon for just a little bit longer. I was following along in the game and it was looking okay with two outs in the 9th. Then I came home to this. That was about 15 minute ago! And it's still the top of the 9th.
Don: "Game coming up on four hours.
me: "this inning is coming up on four hours."

2 runs -- a mere bag of shells.
Hey!
We're on a road to nowhere.
this is a game where, even if the sox rallied and won, you'd be fucking furious.
2 runs -- a mere bag of shells.
It's like sales tax, it's nothing.
We're on a road to nowhere.
I'll take that ride.
road to nowhere:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWtCittJyr0
NOW the low pitch is a strike all the time.
Furious yes, but less so with the writing on the wall. Imagine if this game *really* meant something. Imagine if all the scenarios proposed earlier had happened and we were 2.5 behind coming into this series. Man, would we be pissed.
Last out.
maybe scutaro can throw out/ruin his shoulder on this at bat.
Allan, in your updated post of best/worst games for the season, this should make the list.
just get this over with, pls
i seem to never do best/worst of in the 2nd half.
So ....
Truck Day is only about 23 weeks away.
The bullpen does it again. Thanks, fellas.
2 loses in the double header and now this on a day when the Sox could have picked up a game on both...
Hmmmm....
PA at it again. For more masochism, I just read Extra Bases game updates:
-------------------------
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Oh, those gutty Red Sox. Victor Martinez started his salary drive with a two-run blast over everything in left off Buehrle. But the six outs left to get won't be easy, particularly with Hideki Okajima on the mound now.
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Shocking. Hit-Me Okajima gave up a leadoff hit to Pierzynski, a lefty hitter. You get what you deserve bringing this guy into a tight spot.
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Alexi Ramirez fouled out to left. Manny Ramirez will pinch hit. Now Papelbon is in to try and get a five-out save. Pap against Manny should be fun to watch.
Is he trying to corner the market on cynicism??
Also, Bard blew his 6th save.
Sorry, I left off his Manny jab:
Pap against Manny should be fun to watch. Good thing it's baseball and not the SATs.
"Picking up a game on both" doesn't matter anymore.
Just got back and saw the score. Wow.
Victor Martinez started his salary drive
What an asshole. I wish I had a filter so I didn't have to see all the PA postings here.
MrsG, that was not meant against you in any way!
SATs. Now isn't that telling. The only thing, I would guess, that a sportswriter might have on a ballplayer - an academic accomplishmen that supposedly means intellect. Jealous, much?
Francona fell victim to one of the classic blunders, putting your closer in during the 8th inning.
Hey L, no offense taken!
Francona fell victim to one of the classic blunders, putting your closer in during the 8th inning.
It was a great decision, and absolutely the right move.
Bill Simmons: "RIP my Papelboner (2005-2010)
...I was carrying a semi through the first half of 2009 and went flaccid all together in October.
Classic blunder in what sense? What should he have done, in your opinion? (Not being sarcastic - genuinely curious.)
sox, win it for RSDH! at the game today.
This was by far the worst game I've been to this year, and I thought I had seen some real stinkers. Even the parts where we were ahead were painful to watch, and then the 8th and 9th were... just.... putrid.
I've still got 4 games left this season. All I want is to see them play with some sense of dignity. Is that too much to ask?
At least you had the dignity to stay for the whole game.
This feels like The Lost Season. The Season That Never Was.
Being in Florida is awful, but not as awful as the last three games must have been. I am glad I had to leave before the bitter bitter end yesterday, but my WEEI update buzzed with the loss as we were walking from our hotel room to the wedding. At least the wedding was fun!
Took my 7-yr.-old son to this debacle, his first ever major league game. Man, oh man, what a way to inaugurate him! At least he got to see three WS MVPs (including Beckett with the Marlins) along with Papi and, yes, Papelbon. All of these guys make 04, 07, or both possible.
Plenty of jackasses braying at Manny in the 8th, including one woman with a preschool child giving a two-fisted salute. Felt like the Iron Sheik was entering the ring ca. 1980s.
