G137: White Sox 7, Red Sox 5

White Sox - 010 000 204 - 7 13 1
Red Sox - 002 000 210 - 5 11 2
Jonathan Papelbon threw 48 pitches and blew his seventh save of the season. After he allowed two hits with two outs to tie the score at 5-5, he, Dustin Richardson, and Robert Manuel combined to walk four straight Chicago batters to give the White Sox the lead, the win, and the series sweep. And I'm like, Fuck You.
Example

Mark Buehrle / Josh Beckett
McDonald, RF
Lowrie, 2B
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowell, 1B
Hall, LF
Navarro, SS
Kalish, CF
The Red Sox have called up right-handed reliever Robert Coello from Pawtucket.

Marco Scutaro will have an MRI tomorrow on his right shoulder.

Jason Varitek is scheduled to catch roughly half of Pawtucket's game this evening. He plans on DHing on Monday (the PawSox's last game of the season) and rejoining the team on Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

AL East:
Blue Jays/Yankees, 1 PM
Rays/Orioles, 1:30 PM
Example
September 5:

1914 - Providence Grays (International League) pitcher Babe Ruth hurls a one-hitter and hits his first professional (and only minor league) home run. It comes at Toronto's Hanlan's Point in a 9-0 victory.

1918 - Babe Ruth pitches a six-hit shutout as the Red Sox beat the Cubs 1-0 at Comiskey Field in the first game of the World Series.

1978 - A major-league record 45 players see action as the Expos beat the Cubs 10-8 (nine innings).

Dr. Nick is on a roll. from his Notes column today:

"Apropos of nothing ... 3. When men were men: Tom Glavine made seven starts at the end of the 1992 season with a broken rib ..."

allan said...

Wait - he mentioned it twice!

"... and they must formulate some kind of plan for Jacoby Ellsbury, who played in only 18 games this season because of five broken ribs, one of the great head-scratchers in the history of sports medicine."

allan said...

I half-expect Nick to go out for BBQ ribs tonight and work that into a crack about Ellsbury in whatever the fuck he writes next.

allan said...

BRef: After 14 minor league seasons (all with the Tigers), catcher Max St-Pierre made his major league debut last night -- and got a hit.

meunier said...

Picked off.

Dr. Nick is on a roll

Amazing. Friggin amazing. It is now considered a medical mystery why one cannot bat and play OF effectively with 5 broken ribs.

And of course it must be mentioned at least daily, if not more frequently.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS MAN????

(Rhetorical q, no need to answer.)

allan said...

Remy is being a real sponsor whore today. Every time Don reads an ad, Remy makes a comment: "Nothing like a cold Sam Adams" or "After the game, I have to go to CVS". ... Must be a new thing they are forced to do.

allan said...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS MAN????

Nothing. He is a baseball reporter in Boston.

laura k said...

Oh fucking hell. There's a "guest" in the booth doing an ad for Sanibel / Ft Myers beaches. Turning the entire inning into an extended commercial and there's nothing I can do about it if I want to hear the game.

FUCK YOU RED SOX RADIO

meunier said...

Beckett has nothing left.

laura k said...

I give up. It's brutal to have an extended ad playing right in my ears (headphones at work). I'll just have to miss the half-inning.

Kathryn said...

V-Mart block. Nice job.

allan said...

Again, BS-ing about the lotto.

laura k said...

I gave in and heard the ad person say that 2012 when the new ST facility opens will be the 100 yr anniversary of the Boston Red Sox.

Back to no sound.

laura k said...

Beckett has nothing left.

He's grinding it out, tho.

laura k said...

Can it be true? Do we have A LEAD???

laura k said...

First lead we've had in the whole series.

Kathryn said...

What was that interaction between Papi and Buehrle on Papi's way off the field?

allan said...

Everything. Remy is now adding some personal comment at the end of every. single. ad.

laura k said...

Castig: Josh Hamilton ran into a fence last night and has bruised ribs, "feels like he was in a car wreck".

OB: We know how that goes - ribs.

Another wimp, eh?

allan said...

Rob said...

One good thing, I guess, is not hearing about magic numbers yet.

laura k said...

Everything. Remy is now adding some personal comment at the end of every. single. ad.

Maybe he was told to atone for mangling all those promos.

laura k said...

Rob said...

I feel like Remy lost a bet or something and has to do this.

allan said...

Nah, it's probably a lame attempt to make viewers feel like they are not enduring a commercial every 45 seconds.

allan said...

Good to know that Remy read this morning's Globe "from the first page to the last page".

laura k said...

What's the crowd noise I'm hearing on the radio - the wave?

allan said...

they are making this broadcast absolutely unlistenable.

Rob said...

Now Remy's talking about all the drugs he takes.

allan said...

"It's great to get old. The golden years, they call them."

allan said...

No mention of a drug store, though.

Also Don asked him where he was having dinner tonight. "I can't say." (Yeah, because the restaurant has not paid NESN any $$$!)

allan said...

this is utterly amazing. i mean that honestly. i've never heard anything like it.

every time don speaks, i get ready. and remy chimnes in. every time. even if it is only 2 or 3 words.

allan said...

i thought he couldn't do anything with the waterborne paint.

I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

He didn't say anything about New York Life... He's slipping.

Rob said...

Surprised that Don isn't commenting on the promos that Remy is doing.

allan said...

laura k said...

I know it's wrong, but I find myself cheering for Manny PHing against the Sox - to shut up the boo birds.

Tom DePlonty said...

Hey!

allan said...

PAT says "BOT"!

allan said...

showdown.

laura k said...

Can't help it - right now I like Manny more than this lame-o Red Sox team :(

Rob said...

I'm with you, L. I was actually happy to see Manny hit a dong when I saw him in June when the Dodgers came to town.

laura k said...

Well, that was one way to do it.

laura k said...

Ish, cool :)

allan said...

Poor acting job by MBM.

allan said...

MFY and FKR losing. We need a win.

Michael Holloway said...

Yay! Manny got (a) hit!

;)

allan said...

damn, bot is holding his set about a half-second longer than you would think he'd be able to get away with before the batter calls time. every time!

Rob said...

I thought that ball actually hit him. Still bad acting.

Amy said...

Here I am in awful tropical FL, missing baseball and New England and my cats and dog. How is everyone? What's the score? I have only a few before I have to get dressed for the wedding.

allan said...

bot is walking the tight rope.

4-3 sox, top 8th, one out, cws on 1st and 2nd. just got a K for out #2.

Amy said...

Bot pitching the 8th? or on tightrope getting ready for 9th?

Michael Holloway said...

Amy! That's so deliciously BAD of you!

allan said...

this is interesting.

papelbon is at 15 pitches -- how far will he go in the 9th? 30? 35?

Rob said...

We're going to need some more runs. Just a thought.

Tom DePlonty said...

I hate it when Papelbon comes in early. Three outs is agonizing enough.

Amy said...

Michael?? What?? I don't think I meant anything bad! :)

allan said...

beltre starts bottom of 8th with a double off the top of the wall in lcf!

laura k said...

Hi Amy!!! Hope you're surviving the Sunshine State ok.

allan said...

Lowell pops out.

allan said...

With Hall up, wild pitch puts AB on 3rd.

Amy said...

Not sure if my last comment went through. Netbook is cranky and only has IE, which I hate.

Anyway, I said--thanks, Allan, for the play by play. And I HATE FLORIDA. Sorry if this is a duplication.

Michael Holloway said...

Amy. I was congratulating you. I know from the thread the other day you didn't want to fly down there this weekend; I thought it was great that you're threading while at the wedding. It seems slightly naughty to me. :)

laura k said...

You all heard what Rico Baldy did today?

Tom DePlonty said...

Why do you hate Florida, Amy? Just curious, I lived there a long time.

allan said...

9-pitch at bat for Hall, little grounder to shortstop. contact play and beltre scores.

5-3 red sox.

allan said...

and inning is over.

5-3, bot in bot 9 coming up!

allan said...

I will keep my opinions about Florida to myself.

allan said...

baldy? no.

Amy said...

Tom, it is hot, plastic, ugly, preplanned, humid, etc. Nothing feels real here. And I am in Ft Lauderdale.

OK, hope they win, but I have to get ready.

laura k said...

Kathryn said...

Maybe RSDH will see a walk off. My daughter was at Fenway earlier this year and Pap blew the lead in the 9th only to have the Sox come back and win in the bottom half. I think it was the walk off error against the Tigers??

She had to get ready, said g-byes.

Ha, yes. I wish my father-in-law had needed my help this afternoon for just a little bit longer. I was following along in the game and it was looking okay with two outs in the 9th. Then I came home to this. That was about 15 minute ago! And it's still the top of the 9th.

Furious yes, but less so with the writing on the wall. Imagine if this game *really* meant something. Imagine if all the scenarios proposed earlier had happened and we were 2.5 behind coming into this series. Man, would we be pissed.

Michael Holloway said...

2 loses in the double header and now this on a day when the Sox could have picked up a game on both...

Hmmmm....

Kathryn said...

PA at it again. For more masochism, I just read Extra Bases game updates:

-------------------------
Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Oh, those gutty Red Sox. Victor Martinez started his salary drive with a two-run blast over everything in left off Buehrle. But the six outs left to get won't be easy, particularly with Hideki Okajima on the mound now.

Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Shocking. Hit-Me Okajima gave up a leadoff hit to Pierzynski, a lefty hitter. You get what you deserve bringing this guy into a tight spot.

Top of the 8th: Red Sox 4, White Sox 3
Alexi Ramirez fouled out to left. Manny Ramirez will pinch hit. Now Papelbon is in to try and get a five-out save. Pap against Manny should be fun to watch.

Is he trying to corner the market on cynicism??

allan said...

Also, Bard blew his 6th save.

Kathryn said...

Sorry, I left off his Manny jab:

Pap against Manny should be fun to watch. Good thing it's baseball and not the SATs.

laura k said...

"Picking up a game on both" doesn't matter anymore.

Just got back and saw the score. Wow.

laura k said...

Victor Martinez started his salary drive

What an asshole. I wish I had a filter so I didn't have to see all the PA postings here.

laura k said...

MrsG, that was not meant against you in any way!

laura k said...

SATs. Now isn't that telling. The only thing, I would guess, that a sportswriter might have on a ballplayer - an academic accomplishmen that supposedly means intellect. Jealous, much?

meunier said...

Francona fell victim to one of the classic blunders, putting your closer in during the 8th inning.

sox, win it for RSDH! at the game today.

This was by far the worst game I've been to this year, and I thought I had seen some real stinkers. Even the parts where we were ahead were painful to watch, and then the 8th and 9th were... just.... putrid.

I've still got 4 games left this season. All I want is to see them play with some sense of dignity. Is that too much to ask?

laura k said...

At least you had the dignity to stay for the whole game.

This feels like The Lost Season. The Season That Never Was.

Amy said...

Being in Florida is awful, but not as awful as the last three games must have been. I am glad I had to leave before the bitter bitter end yesterday, but my WEEI update buzzed with the loss as we were walking from our hotel room to the wedding. At least the wedding was fun!

JP said...

Took my 7-yr.-old son to this debacle, his first ever major league game. Man, oh man, what a way to inaugurate him! At least he got to see three WS MVPs (including Beckett with the Marlins) along with Papi and, yes, Papelbon. All of these guys make 04, 07, or both possible.

Plenty of jackasses braying at Manny in the 8th, including one woman with a preschool child giving a two-fisted salute. Felt like the Iron Sheik was entering the ring ca. 1980s.
