G138: Red Sox 12, Rays 5

Rays - 101 000 300 - 5 8 0
Red Sox - 330 500 10x - 12 9 0
An early burst of runs -- back-to-back home runs from David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre in the first and RBI hits from Victor Martinez and Ortiz in the second -- coupled with Ryan Kalish's grand slam in the fourth carried the Red Sox to victory.

Lester (6-4-2-3-10, 94) allowed baserunners in only the first and third innings. He stranded two in the first and left the bases loaded in the third. The pen stumbled in the seventh -- Robert Coello (in his major league debut) issued two bases-loaded walks and Dustin Richardson added another -- but things settled down after that. Boston has walked in seven runs in the last two days.

In addition to the four-run homer, Kalish singled, walked, stole two bases, and scored three times. J.D. Drew singled twice and walked and Daniel Nava walked twice and singled. Lars Anderson went 0-for-4; all 12 pitches he saw were strikes.

Baltimore beat the Yankees 4-3 during the afternoon, so Boston gained a game on both teams. The Red Sox are 6.5 GB in the WC and 9 GB in the ALE.
Example
Jeff Neimann / Jon Lester
Nava, LF
Drew, RF
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowrie, 2B
Kalish, CF
Anderson, 1B
Navarro, SS
Lars Anderson makes his major league debut. Josh Reddick has also been called up. Pawtucket's season ended yesterday.

Everyone knows Boston's post-season chances are thisclose to nil -- the projections at BP (2.1%, 0.9%, 1.7%) and Cool Standings (1.1%) reflect that. Plus, the White Sox's weekend sweep pushed the Red Sox into 3rd place for the wild card.

Back on September 1, YFSF looked at the rest of the season:
If I were a Sox fan who had not yet given up on this season, I would be hoping the Sox can get through next week's home series against the Rays and return home on September 16 from their 6-game stint in Oakland and Seattle no more than 6 back of the Yankees. The Yanks will be entering arguably their toughest stretch of the year ... Boston would be banking on making up the bulk of ground in those final two weeks.
But ... what if the Red Sox swept the Rays? They would be 4.5 GB Tampa Bay with 22 games to play. Would that do anything for you?

Since that post last Wednesday, the Red Sox have not helped their cause at all, going 2-3 and losing another two games in the standings. ... Being 6 GB on September 16 wouldn't guarantee a damn thing, of course, plus it would involve picking up 4.5 games in 10 games (11 days) -- and continuing to steamroll. ... Yeah, a 1.3% shot seems about right. ... Just win one game, tonight's game, and all that, etc.

Anyway ... Neimann was on the DL (right shoulder strain) for most of August. He has made two starts since returning -- allowing 17 runs in 8.1 innings -- and seen his ERA rise by nearly a full run, to 3.97.

Great snip from the book cited by L:

"You have a couple of cannons yourself," he quipped, eyeballing my female-female breasts, all 38 inches D cup of them, where they stood at attention, brown nipples saluting. They were rock hard as they aimed themselves at his broad chest.

"Let's shoot each other," I suggested.

Good to see Rocco back in the majors even if I don't want to see him score any runs.

Rex Parker, your blog is amazing! Loooove it.

Here goes Remy, giving that extra something to the sponsor. I wonder if there are now separate ad rates for an extra announcer push.

they probably pay extra to have remy NOT read their promos.

LOL, was just on the phone saying the same thing every time a run scored.

But, I'll certainly take it tonight. No complaints from me on that!

RedSoxDiehard said...

He was #78 in spring training.

Redsox.com had him at #44 this afternoon when I looked. They don't list Reddick yet, and I'm curious what he'll wear this time. He was 39 earlier in the year but that's Salty now. Last year he was 68, but Coello's got that.

OK, looked again before posting this and they do have Reddick now... #46.

OK, bases-loaded walks can be cool when we're the ones at the plate. Now let's see if Sonnanstine can channel Manuel and walk the next on 4 pitches (not that I'm still bitter or anything of course).

laura k said...

Has anyone seen this "HotelPlanner.com"? They must have spent all their money on ad time and had a nickel left over to produce the thing. If I hadn't seen it during a game, I'd swear it was an old SNL parody.

laura k said...

That was supposed to say... has anyone seen an ad for ... that website.

laura k said...

Oh fucking hell. I take it back. NESN, show something else.

tim said...

robbie needs a pitching manuel.

allan said...

a recent this day in baseball had the tigers tying a record with 6 PH in one inning, in 1970 or so.

tampa will tie that (6) with the next batter -- when the game resumes.

laura k said...

"Even-choo-ally" - Manuel

tim said...

oh, it was coello. nvm then.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Oh no, not Richardson again. [hyperventillates] I can't go through that again so soon.

allan said...

nope, pena hitting

tim said...

why do they show shit being thrown on the field, but not people?

RedSoxDiehard said...

LOL, same difference. Coello needs a pitching "manuel" too.

laura k said...

No. He did not just do that. No no no.

allan said...

7th bases loaded walk in the last 8 innings for sox pitchers

tim said...

here comes tom.

Tom DePlonty said...

Cripe, is any lead safe from this bullpen?

RedSoxDiehard said...

Dustin Richardson is basically Javier Lopez, but a little taller. They even have the same jaw/chin. And I don't think either one has ever retired the first batter they've faced.

allan said...

Shit, Tito, get Hall in there!

laura k said...

This is why I could not join the still-hoping-for-playoffs club. This is not a very good team.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Cripe, is any lead safe from this bullpen?

No.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Shit, Tito, get Hall in there!

Yes.

allan said...

coello and richardson and manuel would not pitch in the playoffs.

allan said...

6th PH!

tim said...

this sportsnet one commerical has shown all mlb teams but the jays, yet i don't think that channel has shown anything BUT jays games, except for a couple when the jays weren't on.

at least the other SNET channels are showing more sox.

laura k said...

coello and richardson and manuel would not pitch in the playoffs.

But in order to be in the playoffs, a team must make the playoffs.

allan said...

That could have been a lot worse, jr.

laura k said...

Look, I don't care what kind of cheerleading you do. The 2010 Red Sox are just not that good. I'm not exactly going out on a limb here!

RedSoxDiehard said...

That was only the 7th?!? We have to go through that 2 more times?!?

tim said...

Yup.

tim said...

LOL they have to show the entire defensive setup again.

laura k said...

Winston, I'm with you :)

Tom DePlonty said...

I really like Scott Atchison.

Cafardo, pre-game: "You can pretty much tell now, based on the Sox lineup, that the end has come."

Cafardo, post-game: "Never know do you? Red Sox pretty much put a lineup out there waving the white flag for the season with four rookies in the lineup and trounced the Rays ..."

Nick, that should probably read: "Never learn do I?"

allan said...

"Pretty much"

allan said...

The number of annoying incidents was way down during this game. I counted only 7 times that Remy extended the commercial/promo with additional blather:

End of T1 - bank
B1, Ortiz AB - apple pie/cider
B2, Drew AB - lotto
T3, Upton AB - beer*
B5, after Nava - first aid**
T7, Jennings AB - paint***
T7, Atchison in - ****

*: had to be prodded by Orsillo
**: very minor mention
***: way overboard; holy shit, what a whore! they must have paid extra!!
****: cannot read my writing, looks like "after game (don house)"; ??

There were just as many times that I expected Remy to jump in, based on Sunday's game, but he did not.
