G155: Yankees 4, Red Sox 3 (10)

Red Sox - 001 000 002 0 - 3 6 1
Yankees - 000 000 201 1 - 4 9 0
The Yankees' magic number for clinching the Wild Card is now 1.

What we need:
Red Sox sweep 4 from White Sox
Blue Jays sweep 3 from Yankees
Red Sox sweep 3 from Yankees
That would give us a one-game playoff with New York on October 4 for the WC.

So...
Example
Daisuke Matsuzaka / Phil Hughes
Scutaro, 2B Drew, RF Martinez, C Ortiz, DH Beltre, 3B Lowrie, SS Kalish, CF Hall, LF Anderson, 1B
The Yankees have changed their minds, again. Hughes was originally scheduled to pitch tonight, but on Friday, Joe Girardi said the team wanted to keep Hughes's workload down before the playoffs began, and Dustin Moseley was tabbed.

Now, with the possibility of perhaps no playoff innings for anyone, the Yankees have decided that increasing Hughes's innings pitched is not such a big deal after all.

Over his last six outings, Hughes has a 6.28 ERA.

Dice has a 6.98 ERA over his last seven starts. He has allowed 4+ earned runs in seven consecutive starts, the longest streak for a Red Sox pitcher since Dick Newsome went nine starts in 1942-43.

This afternoon: The Mariners beat the Rays 6-2 as Small Game James came up small yet again.
Example
September 26:

1906 - The Philadelphia A's finally snap their streak of 48 consecutive innings without scoring a run, but they still lose to Cleveland 5-3. The Cubs will tie this record of futility on June 15-21, 1968.

1912 - The Reds trail the Cubs 9-0 in the top of the ninth inning. But they rally! Chicago's Jimmy Lavender gives up five runs and is pulled with the bases loaded. Two Cubs relievers walk five straight batters and Cincinnati takes a 10-9 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Reds pitcher Ralph Works walks one Cub and hits another before Rube Benton comes in and walks three straight batters -- and the Cubs win 11-10.
Reds - 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 10 - 10 13
Cubs - 1 1 2 0 2 0 3 0 2 - 11 11
Also on this day in 1912, the Red Sox beat the Yankees 15-12 at Fenway Park:
NYY - 0 2 1 0 4 5 0 0 - 12 16
BOS - 0 0 0 0 3 4 0 8 - 15 14
1926 - The Browns beat the Yankees 6-1 and 6-2 in a total time of 2:07, a major league record for a quick doubleheader. After the first game is played in 1:12, the second game takes only 55 minutes, the fastest game in American League history.

allan said...

laura k said...

Yes, it has been a while since I felt any drama over this team!

Kathryn said...

Rob said...

Keep the shit low, Bot.

Rob said...

Big fucking K there! And he managed not to bounce the split.

laura k said...

Whew. About time you get somebody out, Pap.

allan said...

K on strike 4.

f/x from this half-inning is gonna make we wanna kick a puppy.

Amy said...

One more out. How many pinch runners did they put in?

Amy said...

Do not walk in the winning run, you SOB.

SoSock said...

A little late with the strikeout pitching Paps

allan said...

2 PR

Amy said...

Ok, so who pitches the 10th?

laura k said...

WHEW

Extras. OK, we win in 10. Or 11.

SoSock said...

Bonus baseball - DAMMIT

allan said...

WHEW!

AND HERE COMES JOBA!

Amy said...

I cannot stay up much more. I cannot believe I am STILL up. I must be crazy.

laura k said...

The win will be sweeter against JtC.

allan said...

i have to get a 12:43 train, so let's win this in 10 or 11.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Schaedenfreude giveth, schaedenfreude taketh away

laura k said...

Nothing's been taken away yet. They're still playing.

SoSock said...

Joba? Really? You mean we can saddle this loss on Joba? Oh how great would that be!?

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Referring to Rivera blown save followed by Papelbon blown save. They may still be playing, but that's yet another BS for Pap

laura k said...

I cannot stay up much more. I cannot believe I am STILL up. I must be crazy.

In a Boston-NYY tie game? How could you go to sleep?

SoSock said...

Oh......guess not. Damn

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Amy said...
Oy, Papelbon.

Word.

allan said...

Time for a remake of Logan's Run.

allan said...

so who we got pitching the 10?

Amy said...

Well, at least turn off the laptop.

allan said...

Jeemer.

laura k said...

Bah, that was fast.

Amy said...

OK, I am going to turn off the laptop and rest the eyes and hope this game ends soon...in the 11th!

SoSock said...

Jeemer - hang on

Rob said...

JEEMER!??! What the fuck is this shit? So Bard's getting Papelbon treatment. Bring him in when the Yankees are celebrating at home plate.

Kyle said...

Sad thing is...Paps was throwing great pitches (and STRIKES). Not sure why the zone shrank tremendously in the 9th inning.

Rob said...

Atchison & Hill warming... It's not getting any better.

allan said...

why make it easy?
that would be boring.

laura k said...

Pap was throwing great pitches??? WTF

Kyle said...

Yes, Tex and Arod both looked at strike 3. Even ESPN's "kzone" showed they were strikes!!!

laura k said...

Oh holy shit.

allan said...

there were at least 3-4 pitches that were strikes on k-zone that were not called. i'll bet f/x has even more.

allan said...

well, now. this is a jam.

allan said...

hill and atchison up.

good thing we used bard up by 6 or whatever last night

laura k said...

With all due respect to the K zone, that was not a well pitched inning.

SoSock said...

He should have been called out. He's supposed to be outside the line.

Rob said...

"Would take a bit of a miracle for the Red Sox to keep the runner from scoring..."

Well then.

Rob said...

Might as well run the miracle gauntlet, right?

allan said...

yeah, walk it in, good idea.

laura k said...

Ish, I was about to type the same thing!!!

laura k said...

HA! Force at the plate, beautiful.

laura k said...

DP PLS

allan said...

sweet play

allan said...

dp pls, yo

laura k said...

Okay, according to Dave O'Brien, we've just seen a bit of a miracle. More miracle, please!

laura k said...

Shut up about the miracle, OB.

laura k said...

Thanks again, Papelbon!

Rob said...

The deer is dead.

Philip said...

WHERE WAS BARD?!

WHERE THE FLYING F$@# WAS BARRRRRD?!

WHY WAS OKI EVER IN THAT GAME.

FUCKKKKK, TITO.

Joe Gravellese said...

Are you fucking serious Tito? Okajima in that situation was an insult.

Joe Gravellese said...

also, fuck Papelbon. who knew the pitching would kill the team this year?

that is all.

meh.

laura k said...

I gave up on this season ages ago, but here I am all sad like we just got knocked out of the playoffs or something.

Baseball. Crazy.

Good night all.

Rob said...

And here comes Terry Francona out to the mound, he wants Daniel Bard!

Rob said...

Same here, L. For a minute I got reeled back into it.

allan said...

Monday's dinner: Venison.

laura k said...

You folks blaming Tito are amazing. Were you watching this game? And you think the loss was down to Francona?

laura k said...

Right, Ish. Then we woke up.

allan said...

WHERE THE FLYING F$@# WAS BARRRRRD?!

He came into the 8th inning last night when we were up 6-0 and threw 28 pitches.

Rob said...

...which was another weird situation.

Rob said...

Moral of the story: Miracles do happen - in rare instances.

SoSock said...

I almost never blame an umpire for a loss. But the Yankees watched strike 3 go by several times in the last 2 innings, and never got rung up. I really don't hink Papelbon did as bad as the results show. I think he got totally squeezed.

Of course, a little less squanderage in the 6-8th innings would have made it a moot point, but still.....

allan said...

I count seven pitches from Papelbon that were in the strike zone and called balls. SEVEN!

Joe Gravellese said...

It wasn't Tito's fault that we lost, it was fucking Papelbon's, but he still shouldn't have put in Okajima... ever.

I guess maybe I'll put that on Theo then. Okajima should have been DFAd by now. He just can't get people out. Call up "replacement player" from the PawSox. Can't be worse.
