The purge is on. Jeremy Hermida was released tonight. The Sox outfielder had been playing at Pawtucket. In 66 at-bats, he hit .288 with two homers and 12 RBI. Hermida was able to recover from five fractured ribs in five weeks.
So that's twice now that Cafardo's taken shots at Ellsbury without having the balls to use Ellsbury's name. Which is kind of ironic when you think about it. Who's soft?
Nice journalism. You'd almost think it was factual, objective, and disinterested if you didn't know the backstory and if he hadn't said "was able to recover" (unlike who?) instead of "recovered."Or maybe the whole last sentence is gratuitous.
OK, I'll admit I don't know much about baseball off the field stuff. Why release him? Rosters expanded today - why not just call him up? Was there some sort of money-saving involved? Is it a 40-man roster issue?
Ditto, I don't get why they released him with the rosters expanding today.
Nick Cafardo has no idea what he is doing in today's media world. His style changed dramatically since Pete Abe arrived and it seems clear to me he tries to adapt (i guess good for him for trying), but just comes off as clueless and bitter. Quite nearly every single thing he writes/posts on boston.com/twitter makes me feel sad / disinterested / mildly annoyed.i think it's crazy he is their senior baseball writer - he brings absolutely nothing of value to the table.perhaps part of what makes him seem so sad to me is how good of a writer Pete Abe is, and how entertaining and original most of his posts are - albeit with an unneeded dose of shit talking - esp re: Els and Oki.
Oh, there's no reading between the lines here. Nope, not at all.Good grief.
JFett - They released Hermida because they weren't going to offer him a contract next year. They're still on the hook for his entire 2010 salary ($3.5M or something like that) so this isn't being cheap or cost cutting or anything like that. Effectively, he's not in the team's plans anymore so they've given him a head start on the job search.
"was able to recover from five fractured ribs"What an asshole. What. An. Asshole.
