Yankees - 003 020 000 1 - 6 11 0A check swing grounder by Derek Jeter in the 10th inning got past Jonathan Papelbon's glove and Bill Hall's bare-handed grab attempt, and Brett Gardner scored from second base.
Red Sox - 201 000 110 0 - 5 11 2
The Red Sox -- Felipe Lopez, Ryan Kalish, Eric Patterson -- went quietly in the bottom of the 10th against Mariano Rivera. J.D. Drew, a better hitter than any of the three guys who actually batted in the inning, watched the end of the game from the on-deck circle; he was going to pinch-hit for Kevin Cash.
Dumbo Posada tried very hard to give the game to Boston -- the runs in the seventh and eighth both scored on wild pitches that the Yankee catcher botched. A third run nearly scored on Posada's throwing error after the eighth-inning wild pitch, but Josh Reddick was thrown out trying to score from second by Ramiro Pena, with Kerry Wood making the tag.
Mike Lowell hit a two-run double to right-center in the first, walked and scored in the third, and singled high off the Wall in the fifth.Andy Pettitte / Tim Wakefield

1953 - Carl Erskine (9-6-2-3-14) of the Dodgers sets a World Series record with 14 strikeouts in Game 3 against the Yankees at Ebbets Field.
1963 - Sandy Koufax (9-6-2-3-15) of the Dodgers breaks Erskine's record by striking out 15 batters in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium.
1968 - Bob Gibson (9-5-0-1-17) of the Cardinals breaks Koufax's record by striking out 17 Tigers in Game 1 at Busch Stadium. That remains the record.
Before 1953, the record had been 13, set by Howard Ehmke of the A's in Game 1 in 1929 -- though not on October 2.

Exciting stuff with the W-L contest! The only two contestants still alive are the ones with the two worst predictions.
If the Sox go 0-3: no winner.
If the Sox go 1-2: no winner.
If the Sox go 2-1: Peter L wins.
If the Sox go 3-0: Jeff R wins.
No Marco or Beltre for the remainder, sweet..
Thanks, Mike -- and thanks, Nick!!!
painful listening to mccarver with that atlanta 1992 story. he clearly, very early on, had no idea what he was talking about or who the players involved were, and he went slowly through it, making mistakes. ouch.
Radio guys making much of the Red Sox's "need" to reach 90 wins. Yes, that will make a big difference. Uh-huh...
cano
bah
mccarver said that nava's parents are probably just as happy for that rbi single as they were for his first pitch grand slam in his debut.
Oh yeah. And his father had a really good breakfast this morning, great eggs, and he was just as happy about that as the grand slam.
So I hear at the pre-game "thanks Mike" ceremony, Beckett gave Lowell 3rd base. That's cool.
Bye Mike!
Castig on Don's appearance for tonight's game: "I thought he headed right to the dining room when he gets here."
OB: "He does. Fuel for all those notes he has to study."
PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!!!!!
and fuck you joba
mccarver describes what dumbo does on that ball, then says "but what catchers are taught to do..."
blown call on the gardner stolen base. should be out.
McCarver: "Perfect throw by Martinez"...uh, wasn't it off the bag quite a bit?
K-lutch.
Richardson: 13 walks in 13 innings
OB: "You got to *want* to throw strikes"
I'm guessing Richardson probably does want to throw strikes.
dropballa
OK this could be good.
Thanks, NYY bullpen!
PASSEDBALLA BABY!!!
OH POSADA, I LOVE YOU!
HAHAHAHHAHHHHHHHHHHHAHA

hall has not launched a moon shot in awhile...
due?
i can't remember, what happens if 1st place & WC are tied? one-game playoff?
tampa wins division, based on head to head, i believe.
I mean in general. NL East could be tied for 1st/WC. It goes by the teams' record against each other?
Extra innings, why not. Let's see how many innings we can play in one day.
bot in the 10th.
Typical Bot. If he blows this...GRRR.
Only time you have a one-game playoff is if two teams are battling for a playoff spot.
In the AL East, the Rays do hold the tiebreaker.
Only time you have a one-game playoff is if two teams are battling for a playoff spot.
Yes, that's what I'm asking about. Isn't a tie for division/WC two teams battling for a playoff spot?
Are you saying there is never a one-game playoff for WC vs division?
Good old Bot.
totally bush league.
looked like bot should have gloved that 3-hopper. then a horrible play by hall to let it get by him.
some heavy lumber in the 10th:
lopez
mcdonald
patterson
cash
vs mo
on bench: drew and tek
Maybe Fruitbat can be Fruitbot today.
kalish ph microwave

Nearing Game 2 scheduled start time. I wonder when they'll start it. 10? 10:30?
oh fer crissakes
cash walk off
The money shot?
Clean water. Good night.
in the old days of regular doubleheaders, there was about 30-40 minutes between games.
great idea, leaving drew on deck with shittier hitters making outs ahead of him.
Very frustrating. Ok, did Bogar send the second runner on the passed ball play? Or was it the runner's choice (i forget who was on 2nd)
There's never a one-game playoff to decide div/WC. It's a pre-determined tiebreaker.
But those were actual double-headers: two games for the price of one, one set of tickets sold.
Now they have to clear out the whole park and start all over.
Abraham says "third base coach Tim Bogar sent Reddick to the plate. He was thrown out by third baseman Ramiro Pena."
SoSHer LynnRice75: "Wow. The Sox lost a nut-crunching extra inning game to the Yankees that featured Paplebon in a crucial situation, a nearly unknown batter up in crunch time, and a cheap Jeter hit. I did not see that coming!"
