G75: Mariners 9, Red Sox 4

A gruesome 11-batter fifth-inning for Tavarez (4.1-6-6-3-3-1, 87) and Kyle Snyder (two bases loaded walks) erased a 2-1 Boston lead and put the Sox in a 6-2 hole.

Mike Timlin allowed three more runs in the eighth (on Seattle's first back-to-back home runs of the season, both hit on the first pitch) and that was that. In the top of the ninth, after Drew walked and Pedroia doubled, Youkilis brought them both in with his own double, making the score look somewhat close.

Toronto won in Minnesota, so they are now 10 GB. Idle New York is 11 GB.

***

Julian Tavarez (4.50, 100 ERA+) / Jeff Weaver (8.56, 49 ERA+)

MLB.com:
Tavarez is coming off his best start of the year, shutting down the Braves in a seven-inning masterpiece. In four June starts, Tavarez is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA, and he's allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his past nine starts. ...

In his first start of the season, Boston jumped all over Weaver, who allowed seven runs on seven hits in only two innings ... Two months later, Weaver appears to have found his groove, and is coming off his best start of the season, a four-hit complete-game shutout against the Pirates ...
Jason Varitek is 8-for-19 against Weaver with a double and two homers.

Good to see Drew back in the lead-off spot and having only one pitcher batting at the bottom of the order. This is probably my favorite lineup of the available options.

allan said...

A pitcher and a DH!

What a crazy game!!

Benjamin said...

Twins just tied it up in Toronto. I guess we're supposed to care about the division's new #2.

Benjamin said...

Well that didn't last long. Let them stay in front of the MFYs, I suppose.

Benjamin said...

They should replace the All Star game with an All Pitcher game. One at each of the nine positions, plus another DHing. I'd totally watch that.

Benjamin said...

And Toronto gives them back on a wild pitch and E2. Tied at 5.

allan said...

Anyone wondering what became of former MFY 3B Mike Blowers? He's the color guy for the FSN team calling tonight's game on my TV.

WHERE THE F IS NESN??????????

Its too bad that Hinske can't play shortstop since he is 10 for 25 with 5 doubles, a triple and a home run against Weaver.

Oh, yeah since the Sox have lost five straight at Safeco, I couldn't have picked a better pitcher to face tonight.

I'd rather watch 4ryolds play teeball.

Thats the one thing I hate about interleague and the national league, the pitcher hitting.

You are asking a person every fifth day to go up to bat against the best pitchers the world has to offer and do one of the hardest things in the world of sports, hit a baseball. Its foolish and uncomfortable to watch.

Although considered a born hitter by many, Williams worked countless hours to improve throughout his career. He often said hitting a baseball was “the hardest thing to do in sports.”

Benjamin said...

But if you're going to have an exhibition game, it might as well be a real spectacle. Plus Beckett and Arroyo could hit cleanup.

allan said...

Weaver Being Weaver! Love it.

Now he has to give up some taters and totally melt down.

allan said...

Weaver now talking to himself after Flo's hit. That's always a good sign!!!

Benjamin said...

"Pitching visit to mound"?

Benjamin said...

LOL.

Benjamin said...

Youk better not squander such Papi baserunning.

allan said...

FSN: "dangerous third baseman" Mike Lowell.

allan said...

LOB-otomy.

Benjamin said...

Not dangerous enough tonight.

Benjamin said...

Come to think of it, replacing the all star game with four-year-olds playing tee ball would also be a good idea. Give the players some rest, and let WS homefield advantage be decided by true professionals.

Benjamin said...

They re-scored Drew's rbi as a single?

Benjamin said...

I'm liking the Coco Ichiro Crisp era.

allan said...

Drew; yeah, single and 2 RBI.

andy said...

I love the way lugo sucks. Maybe they will pull him when he drops below 100

allan said...

.192 --- got a ways to go.

...

Lugo: ALCS MVP. ... Write it down.

Benjamin said...

Not if we're still ahead by double digits, I bet.

6 LOB after 4 innings of atbats. Le sigh.

allan said...

Weaver has been getting a TON of strike calls on pitches up and out of the zone. It's getting highly annoying.

Benjamin said...

I was going to ask about the strikezone. It looks pretty screwy on gameday. (And it also shrank vertically during Tek's first at bat, down to his waist, for no apparent reason.)

allan said...

FSN on Broussard: "extended his hitting streak to 3" with his 2nd inning single.

3? WTF??

allan said...

FSN was showing its pitch "tracer" earlier (poor man's K-Zone, I guess).

Weaver had a 1-2 count on one guy and all pitches were well out of the zone. It happened a few more times. They are not using it as much now.

Benjamin said...

Let us now bow our heads and give thanks for cavernous ballparks.

Patriots Film said...

Dustin backing up tavarez's wild throw to youk is just one of the many reasons why we should all submit to pedroier's greatness

Benjamin said...

Anyone warming up?

allan said...

snyder up.

allan said...

synder got up after the BB to ichiro, btw

Benjamin said...

So then wtf is Tavarez still in.

allan said...

yooooooook with the rifle FC to third.

a sexy dp pls.

allan said...

Old Seattle announcer guy Dave Neihaus must take a nap during the middle innings.

Other guy in this inning, he must have pom-poms in the booth, he could give Rizzuto lessons on being a homer. Mute.

Benjamin said...

Is the strikezone as inconsistent as it looks?

allan said...

stop walking guys, snyder. shit.

allan said...

3 pitches from the Bonger and we got 2 guys on.

It is on ....

allan said...

coco hacks, but lugo will come through here. maybe a double.

allan said...

first pitch up and in to lugo, called a strike, was a ball for snyder at least 4 times last inning.

so yeah, inconsistent

allan said...

ichiro's fly ball - they just showed about the 10th row in the RF seats.

then quickly panned down to see drew catch it very shy of the track.

allan said...

if we didn't have a really big divisional lead, i'd really wanna throw things tonight.

this game is pissing me off.

allan said...

thanks, white flag. thanks a fuck of a lot.

Joe Grav said...

toast

andy said...

Funny you say that I just sat down after throwing a bottle cap across the room when Manny went down.

allan said...

B2B.

Timlin: RETIRE NOW.

walk off the mound and go home. seriously. good bye.

andy said...

Timlin is also still awesome. I wouldn't want to hurt his feelings by optioning him down a few leagues.

tim said...

glad im not watching it!

what an incredibly busy couple weeks its been, have hardly had the chance to tune into any games, i saw the rockies rout beckett but thats about it. havent gone on to mlbtv to check this one out either. saw the score and decided "meh"

ive also been captivated by MLB 2K7 for xbox 360 - great game, only downside is that i have to bring my ipod in from the car so i can listen to music during the games. (they have the miller-morgan dumbassduo doing commentary)

surprisingly (maybe not), they're even stupider in video game form than in real life. (i.e. I pitch a fastball low and away for a ball - joe: "he didn't want it down there, but it went") - i clearly aimed it there and selected FB, goof.

Joe Grav said...

maybe if he gives up 5 HR in one inning he will retire...go m's?

allan said...

1st back to back HRs for seattle this year.

nice.

andy said...

Tim looks sad.

allan said...

still, gotta hand it to tito for good usage.

dp, tiz and manny go 1-2-3 on 8 pitches -- and i feel a loss is on the way for sure.

he brings in timlin. ... why waste a real arm?

allan said...

seattle fsn is showing sox fans in the stands all gloomy like it's game 7 of the world series.

these sad sack mariner loser fucks.

andy said...

Thank god we got out of that inning without much damage. Still within reach

andy said...

see first batter walks always score runs. as long as we have only 1 out by the time Loogey comes up.

allan said...

i like your optimism.

unless you are being sarcastic -- then i like that.

andy said...

a little of both. ask me again after the game.

allan said...

hargrove must be loving this guy green.

5 pitch walk to yook. 3-0 to lowell. hits tek. 3-0 to coco ...

all with a 7 run lead.

andy said...

I like how opposing teams never feel safe with a 7 run lead on the Sox. They walk two guys and they rally the bullpen.

allan said...

murphy hitting for lugo.

andy said...

I ran into Covelli in the Adidas store in Downtown SD on saturday. He has a nice looking wife and kids.

allan said...

and with the pen move, super genius for murphy.

allan said...

WMP GIDP. Time for more wine....

andy said...

Maybe pena got the signs mixed up. wasn't this supposed to be one of those 2 times in 10 that he puts wood on ball?

andy said...

from SoSH:
In all seriousness, an inning a day against Timlin before each game might just give Lugo the confidence he needs to get back to .200

allan said...

ryan rowland-smith in for sea.

it's 1:22 am, but i can't think of another player with a hyphenated last name.

andy said...

last chance for magic.

andy said...

fucking pitch tracker is better than the umpire

allan said...

... and so we pin our season's hopes on gabbard.

:>)

Benjamin said...

Maybe Romero deserved to be DFAed, but not for Timlin.
