ASG 78: American 5, National 4

Ichiro hits the first inside-the-park home run in All-Star game history -- very surprised that hadn't happened before.

I'll check out Flo in the 1st, but I don't think I'm going to watch the game.

Yeah, I honestly don't care about this game.
Is Lake Placid really better than Dped?

If I start keeping score, which is a bit of a challenge during the ASG, I won't wanna stop. So I think I'll pass from the start.

One thing though -- I hate the DH, but there is only one place on earth where it makes sense to use it and that's the ASG.

So, naturally, pitchers are batting tonight.

I remember watching the ASG in '78, I think, with Rick Burleson up in the ninth with men on and two strikes and thinking, "One swing of the bat could win the game, one swing could lose it." Vivid memory of baseball as a little kid.

So easy to find the truth on baseball-reference.com: it was 1979, but Burelson was indeed the last batter of the game with one on, and struck out. AL lost 7-6.

I was foolish to hope for an HR from Burleson.

I think that may have been the last ASG I got excited about. But it has been fun seeing all the different baseball team jerseys around San Francisco this week.

I was thinking I really enjoyed the long scoreless game that went about 13 innings -- and am shocked to see that it was in 1987.

The AL hitting for the cycle in the first inning against Fat Billy in 2004 was highly enjoyable.

the Yanks on the roster are tanking it to hurt the sox' chances

Is that funny or serious? Sometimes I just don't know

Can somebody explain to me how Beckett gets the win here? It was 2-1 when he left, but the final score was 5-4.

Not that I'm complaining, or it really matters. Just curious.

He pitched the half inning before they took the lead. That's how it works.

for serious I felt it looked like the yanks fucked their shit up on purpose.

Ah, gotcha - the NL never caught/tied the AL after that. I overlooked that fact.

if true, it's nice to know the mfy are positive that the red sox will outdo the angels and tigers for the pennant.

but i'm opting for the more likely reason: they simply suck.

Classic Red Sox fan paranoia, tho.

Well it could also be that I was more hyper sensitive to each and every fuck up that A-Hole and CI made. I mean with my logic Ortiz was trying to sabotage the game too.

phrenile said...

You think it's suspicious that CI grounded into a doubleplay, ARod misplayed a hop and was thrown out at home, and Posada passed a ball? That's just median baseball for the Yankees this year.

Posada passed a ball

PASSEDBALLA!!!!!

Zenslinger said...

That passedballa, along with a weak throw on a SB, almost earned Papelbon a run off a bloop single. But he got the strikeout to get himself to two outs without any help from his batterymate.

That's not paranoia. It's true. I know, for one, that the Yankees have been trying to kill me my whole life......

Hey, how come nobody's talking about how if it determines home field now, it should at the very least be fair in that the league that's at home alternates from year to year. The last two ASG's have been at NL parks. Yes, I know we've* won both, but, not the point.

*Rare time Sox fan will say "we" when talking about a group of guys that includes Yankee players.

:-)

Now, I didn't say it wasn't true. You know the old saying: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
