G85: Tigers 9, Red Sox 2

Sexy Lips was almost out of trouble.

Down 4-1 in the fifth, with two on and no one out, he struck out Magglio Ordonez and got Carlos Guillen on a grounder to second. He walked Sean Casey intentionally and was ahead of Marcus Thames 1-2.

But Thames then whacked a grand slam to left, Detroit's lead ballooned to 8-1, and Tavarez was headed to the showers.

On the other side, Miller held the Red Sox in check (7-3-1-4-6, 109).

***

Julian Tavarez (4.39, 102 ERA+) / Andrew Miller (3.81, 115 ERA+)

Gordon Edes reports that 28-year-old right-handed hitting first baseman Jeff Bailey has been called up from Pawtucket -- and may start tonight.

Sox Propsects:
He is adequate defensively, with below average range, a decent glove, and an good arm for a 1B. Above average power, leading the Red Sox minors in home runs in 2006. Good contact and plate patience. Slow on the basepaths, about what you'd expect from a converted catcher. Strikes out too much. Failed to impress during extended stints with the Red Sox in Spring Training 2007.
In 74 games with the PawSox, Bailey is hitting .250/.358/.429 -- but .301/.400/.491 against LHP.

Redsox.com:
[LHP] Miller allowed six runs over five innings in his first start against an American League team in an 8-5 loss to the Twins on Saturday. Miller had experienced few problems in his first four starts, with a 3-1 record and 2.70 ERA, all of which came in Interleague Play.
Detroit has a 49-34 record and is 1 GB Cleveland in the Central.

I can see why they want to send Ellsbury down -- to keep him playing regularly -- but why bring up this guy? Why not Breslow or another pitcher? We don't need a 1B with Hinske around.

allan said...

It is weird. I would think another arm might be a good idea against Detroit.

And Bailey, at 28, is far from a real prospect.

Papi-less lineup:

Coco Crisp, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Mike Lowell, 3B
Manny Ramirez, DH
Jason Varitek, C
J.D. Drew, RF
Wily Mo Pena, LF
Jeff Bailey, 1B
Julio Lugo, SS

I can't access SoSH from work. Any tidbits of info over there?

9casey said...

Sosh just mentions how hinske is bad against lefties (2 going for the tigers this weekend)and Youk is probablly out for the series

s1c said...

Word on the street is Youk's quad and the fact they are facing all of these lefties is the reason for the move. Sounds like Francona is saying everybody that we can is going to get the rest.

Our record against RHP is 40-20 (.667); vs LHP it's 13-11 (.541) -- a significant difference. Heading into the playoffs it would be good to know if we have a serviceable sub that mashes lefties. Cleveland's roster is lousy with LHP, as is Detroit's (though much of det's are injured). None of the Angels' starters are LH, and only one reliever.

Zenslinger said...

It would be interesting to look at how many different starting lineups there have been this season. 30? 35? More? Usually the sign of trouble, for us it's a sign of going the distance. I'm glad. There's nothing more annoying than stumbling exhausted into the playoffs and being knocked off easily after amassing an impressive regular season record.

Lowell batting 3rd. Why not?

Zenslinger said...

Strange, RS, my work Internet filter blocks SoSH as well.

Any of you old-timers get a mental image of Bob Bailey when you hear Jeff Bailey?

I do.

... Man, when I was 13-14, I hated Bob Bailey. ... Though I hated the Fuckin' Gerbil way more.

allan said...

Turns out his last major league AB was his being totally over-matched and whiffing against Gossage as a PH in The BFD Game.

I'm glad you didn't link the retrosheet version of the '78 game, as it says:

"The HR that broke New
England's back;"

right in the play-by-play. As far as I know, that's the only thing wrong with retrosheet. I haven't seen any other examples there like that one. They have little "asides," but they're always facts.

Also, I was watching that Dent at bat recently, and it really is fishy with the bat switch. He fouls the ball off his leg, he hobbles around for a while, then they come out and spray shit on him (mystique?), then he's finally ready to hit, and the bat boy comes out and gives him a new bat, even though he's holding the original bat and there was nothing wrong with it. (Except that Mickey Rivers hadn't corked it...)

The only team lower than that in the AL is Seattle with 33..

allan said...

the retrosheet version

That has always bugged me also, though I didn't think of it this time around.

I wonder if they have a similar note for The Greatest Stolen Base Of All Time™.

allan said...

I had NESN for the entire Tampa Bay series -- and was thus spared Joe Migraine -- but it was too good to last.

Detroit FSN tonight. These guys are highly obnoxious if the Tigers get a lead. I'll be watching on mute.

You've been warned.

allan said...

Not that I think the Tigers will have a lead very often, but you know ...

allan said...

Let me know if they bust out a Flavor Flavish "Yeeeeah, Boooyeeee!" after a Tiger HR.

Or maybe a "You're in the big leagues now, Boston."

(You think I'm kidding ....)

Benjamin said...

Nope, though it does have this anecdote from the 3rd inning: "Rodriguez homered
[Jeter scored]; the ball left the park and landed on the
street; a few seconds later it came sailing back into CF where
Damon picked it up and threw it back over the wall onto the
street; it came back in one more time and West pocketed it to
end the game of catch between Damon and the fans on Lansdowne
Street".

laura k said...

"Let me know if they bust out a Flavor Flavish "Yeeeeah, Boooyeeee!" after a Tiger HR. "

No fair watching on mute and still getting to mock the announcers. I'm not tellin you nothin. :)

allan said...

If they mention how the Bloody Sock was all a hoax, you gotta!!!

laura k said...

If they do that, you know I will.

I wonder how many thousands of people found JoS through this at Huffington Post.

Benjamin said...

Miller's no-hitting the sox after two innings, but he's thrown more pitches (28) than Batshit (24) to do it.

Benjamin said...

So that no-hitter magical thinking talk actually works, eh.

allan said...

What's that, you say?

ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER?

Let me see.

Yes, you are right.

ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER!
ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER!
ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER!
ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER!
ANDREW MILLER IS THROWING A NO-HITTER!

Benjamin said...

Though not enough.

Benjamin said...

DETROIT IS PLAYING ERRORLESS BASEBALL?

laura k said...

Who is Batshit?

allan said...

Batshit = Yo-Yo = Sexy Lips

Benjamin said...

Tavarez. Because he is, you know.

allan said...

It's what people call him on those other sites.

laura k said...

Yuck. I hope Joy Nation doesn't start calling him that. He's Lips to me.

laura k said...

"Because he is, you know."

He's way too funny and cool to be called that. When he was with the Cardinals, I used to call him Psycho Boy. But he's so great now.

Besides, it sounds too much like Fruit Bat.

allan said...

So, L, is it nice to not have to hear Remy's constant blather about his ASG party?

allan said...

It's better when the player gives himself the nickname -- without knowing it.

Benjamin said...

There's an implied ellipsis, though.

laura k said...

"So, L, is it nice to not have to hear Remy's constant blather about his ASG party? "

I have to say, it's actually nice to have a break from NESN. I am sick to death of Remy's ASG party, Rem Dawg Nation and all his other ads disguised as banter.

But A, you would have loved listening to the Red Wings GM for an entire inning. I know how you enjoy it when the announcers talk about those other sports.

allan said...

OMG! Laura typed "Fruitbat"!

Another corner turned ....

Benjamin said...

LAA: 003
MFY: 02

allan said...

Funny story about the batboy and broken phone last night.

Benjamin said...

Crap.

allan said...

The 2nd and 3rd LAA runs came on an O-Cab double.

allan said...

Now MFY have bases loaded with 0 outs against Colon.

laura k said...

"OMG! Laura typed "Fruitbat"!"

No corner has been turned. I was merely referring to his nickname - not using it myself. There are lines I will never cross. I owe him too much.

Some of us care about those things, you know.

laura k said...

That crazy game in Chicago today was the first half of a double-header?! Ouch.

laura k said...

From MLB story about batboy and broken bullpen phone:

"I don't know what you're saying but I'll pretend I understood you," Cundiff was thinking.

and

"Who was the guy that rode the horse and passed the message around Boston?" said Witasick. "That's kind of like the way it was."

Ron said...

This is getting ugly.

Bartman said...

The White Sox won the WS only two years ago, yet are in bad shape now. Pretty much the same folks on the grass, but some pitchers have gone. How fleeting is success!

Ron said...

Uglier.

laura k said...

Ug-lee. Those with NESN tonight, be glad.

Ron said...

Yeah, plus there's a danger the MFY could close to within 11. ;-)

allan said...

Lovely.

I go away for a little while and come back to this.

Looks like it's Homely Lips tonight.

Those with NESN tonight, be glad.

I don't even want to know.

laura k said...

Don't worry, you won't hear it from me.

"Yeah, plus there's a danger the MFY could close to within 11. ;-) "

:-D

allan said...

wow - that was a shit strike call on manny.

unbelievable.

Ron said...

Looks like Tito just gave up. Can't say that I blame him though.

Zenslinger said...

I think that Redsock's impatience with announcers is rubbing off on me.

I sat down to watch on mlb.tv just as the fourth ended with that close play at the plate in which Rabelo was called out at home. The announcers were insisting he was probably safe, that his hand came around and got the plate before Varitek's tag. The replay switches to another angle and the announcer continues to repeat that he was safe even as the new angle clearly shows Varitek's glove on Rabelo before he manages to touch the plate.

The game is ugly -- Julian threw a few good pitches before giving up the slam and I thought he was going to get out of it. But it was hard not to smell the L in the air tonight, what with the opponent, our starting pitcher, the park, and our lineup.

I suppose I shouldn't be giving up though. Eh.

laura k said...

Y'all can just watch without giving up or not giving up. What with the zen and all.

laura k said...

See, Coco hasn't given up.

Hi all! Tigers fan here in Detroit. Nice blog ya got going here. Just wanted to say hi to the opponents' backers. There's a lot of buzz about this series here in the MoTown area. Tigers got spanked pretty good by the Red Sox last time around, but we're all looking forward to this series. It's always nice to see two quality teams go at it, and I can't think of many clubs with more class than the Red Sox. I'll be at the game tomorrow, hope you all have a good time watching on tv; I'm sure the next two games will be a lot closer. Heck, this one could tighten right up yet, who knows!

Zenslinger said...

Incredible how the division lead adds to the zen.

Yanks take the lead back again, 10-9. Then 12-9 as A-Rod homers. Guess his MRI came out all right; he's playing third.

laura k said...

"Incredible how the division lead adds to the zen."

Yup. It's an entirely different feeling when every pitch, every game isn't life or death. Ahhh... Luxury.

allan said...

Howdy, jml!

Maybe we'll be seeing you again in October.

L and I were just talking about a possible road trip to Comerica next season. (We were able to get out to Tiger Stadium for a Red Sox series in its fnal year.)

9casey said...

Wily Mo has more K's than total bases, Jesus, you would think that was impossible....He strikes out almost half the time.......He's bad.......Lugnut .190

JML said...

Heya Redsock. It would be great to have you in our humble yard. Comerica is a beautiful park, and it's been nice having it filled to capacity these last two seasons. Heh, my roommate and I are aiming to visit Boston when the Tigers come to town next season. Great fans think alike. ;-)

laura k said...

"L and I were just talking about a possible road trip to Comerica next season."

Definite! A definite road trip. Red Sox at Detroit, visit blog-friends in Windsor, stop in to visit our favourite Ontario wine on Pelee Island.
