G90: Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 4

I love the way the Red Sox have been so quick to answer an opponent's rally with some runs of their own. It happened twice tonight.

Boston led 3-0 when Troy Glaus homered in the 4th. Bottom half of the inning: Hinske belted a solo shot.

Toronto slapped Dice around for three runs in the sixth (back-to-back doubles from Frank Thomas and Glaus and a home-run by Aaron Hill), tying the game at 4-4. Then the Sox sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom half. The rally was kicked off by a long, two-run home run from Jason Varitek.

Julio Lugo had three hits, David Ortiz homered and doubled, and Coco Crisp tripled and scored twice.

Dice left after six innings (6-9-4-2-2, 110). Manny Delcarmen pitched two innings, allowing a single and striking out a career-high four batters. Jeemer took the ninth.

The Yankees came from behind and beat Tampa 6-4, so the Jays and MFY flip-flopped in the standings again. New York stayed 10 GB, while Toronto fell to 11 GB.

***

Dustin McGowan (4.65, 98 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.84, 117 ERA+)

Redsox.com:
Four big-league teams have faced Matsuzaka more than once. Of them, the Blue Jays have fared worst. Toronto has managed just three runs in Matsuzaka's two starts against them, spanning 13 innings, eight hits, 18 strikeouts, a win and a loss.

... Since his first quality start on May 23, McGowan has lowered his ERA from 7.17 to 4.65, nearly throwing a no-hitter on June 24 in a complete game against Colorado. That breakout performance against the Rockies followed a 1.2-inning shellacking by the Dodgers and a five-run clunker at Seattle. He finished the first half with seven shutout innings in Oakland.

From the herald blog about Tavarez - Francona said that Julian Tavarez, who has a 7.71 ERA in his last four starts, will remain in the rotation for now but said that the right-hander must improve the command of his pitches.

Also Drew is sitting because of the hammy and Hinske is in right.

David Ortiz walked out of a closed door session with manager Terry Francona. Think Ortiz might be regretting his off-season decision not to have knee surgery?

From extra bases........

What does that mean , was he supposed to fly or was he mad?

redsock said...

Also from Cafardo: "The Sox have decided to send Brendan Donnelly off to a second opinion on his strained right forearm ..."

CF - Coco Crisp
2B - Dustin Pedroia
DH - David Ortiz
LF - Manny Ramirez
1B - Kevin Youkilis
3B - Mike Lowell
C - Jason Varitek
RF - Eric Hinske
SS - Julio Lugo

CF - Vernon Wells
LF - Reed Johnson
RF - Alex Rios
DH - Frank Thomas
3B - Troy Glaus
1B - Lyle Overbay
2B - Aaron Hill
C - Gregg Zaun
SS - John McDonald

the right-hander must improve the command of his pitches

No shit.

Media says we're the first in line to pay $30m a year for Sir Slapalot next year. Are we?

Red Sox fandom, win or lose, has been so great the last five years or so. Please don't ruin it by doing this to us. Don't make us hem and haw and say, "Well, he is the greatest hitter in the game, maybe ever..." as we try to choke this down.

I'd also like to know where the notion originates that we're ready to go for him. One writer I read this morning said that if someone was sending signals that we'd like to sign A-Rod, it would have to someone above Theo, who wouldn't spend that kind of money for that length of time (5/$145m? More?) That it would be 20% of the whole payroll.

But did anyone say we'd pursue him? Or is it just a matter of sportswriters deciding we would because we're one of the few teams with the means?

s1c said...

There are a lot of reasons that the writers think the Sox will pursue A-rod. We have the means, they tried to get him before, it would be a coup over the evil empire and 800 is fast approaching.

Personally I think he's going to go to the Angels.

redsock said...

They report it because it's a good story. Nothing official has been said, as far as I know.

He'd be a hell of an upgrade at 3B over Lowell or (maybe) could move back to SS. $30 is way too much though.

Reports in MFYland say that if he opts out, they won't be in the FA bidding, presumably driving down his value (no Boras leverage).

redsock said...

Acutally, it's a great story. It'll be huge this winter -- and is perfect for the Boston media to pounce on, considering all that has happened since Oct. 2003.

But the FO has been tight-lipped as usual. (But will they be blue-lipped?) !

Zenslinger said...

I don't argue that he's a great player, but I don't want him on my team.

Could the rest of you stomach it or not?

s1c said...

Fox sportsnet is reporting that Luccino wants him.

redsock said...

Could the rest of you stomach it or not?

Yeah, I could.

I don't have the hate for him like I do for guys like TCM, Tejada, and Sheffield. ... Plus, he's good.

Imagine if the Yankees don't want him and the red sox don't want him...
That would leave the Angels, Giants, and Cubs....Would any of them pay him 30 mil........

The red Sox would not need the jump at the box office , so he doesn't pay for himself ..I think the Yankees saw a jump of 750,000 per year since he has been there....
The other teams except maybe the cubs would benefit from him greatly attendance wise

Man on 2nd, no outs. ... 5 pitches later, walking to the dugout. Nice, Dice!

"What does that mean , was he supposed to fly or was he mad? "

Means he was mad.

redsock said...

If Slappy signed with Boston for next year and put up a monster year with several walkoff shots against the Yankees -- man, that would be a lot of fun!!!

ZS, it's nowhere near that point. It's just talk. Nothing to choke on yet.

YEAH PAPI!!!!

Buffy said it was a 3-0 Cookie. Cookie Monster!!!

redsock said...

FLO!!!!!!!!!

I love seeing "In play, run(s) scored" when the bases are empty!!!

L-girl said...

To me, if he improves your team, if he helps you win, you want him. It's nice if you can like players personally, but that's extra.

redsock said...

All Your Cookie ...

Would you want him playing ss next year in Fenway for 30 mill a year?..............

No.

We'll win it all without him this year and we can win it all without him next year.

Either you want him or not........

s1c said...

Fashion alert between McGowan and Marcum the two have a full beard. (says the middle aged man who shaves twice a week because he can't grow one).

L-girl said...

9Casey, those statements don't contradict. Win it with him or without him vs why not, if he helps us win. I think both those. Why not?

L-girl said...

Full beards seem to have made a comeback in baseball this season.

Blech.

Sad to say, it's one thing I miss about the Yankees.

L-girl said...

Rogers Morons CANNOT shut up about Manny playing too shallow. You'd think no one is managing the man, like he's just flying by the seat of his pajamas every night.

(And no, I can't mute it, because then I can't play in the game thread. So please just let me complain.)

redsock said...

I'm still consistent.

I'd take him -- but not for 30 million.

(Unlike, say, Fat Billy, who I wouldn't want for free.)

$20? Yes.

s1c said...

Whew got away with one there, DPed has to make the tag.

redsock said...

They seem to believe that Manny is going whereever he wants and the Red Sox have no idea where to play their outfielders.

LISTEN, MORANS:

He is playing where he's playing because the team has decided (after more studies than we can imgaine) that that is where it is best to play. And they have decided that anything hit over his head is worth it for what he can catch when playing shallow and how he can hold/throw out runners.

GOOD FUCKING GOD, HOW HARD IS THAT TO EVEN CONSIDER?????????????

L-girl said...

"GOOD FUCKING GOD, HOW HARD IS THAT TO EVEN CONSIDER?????????????"

And he's not even listening to them!

Now every time 9Casey is quiet, I think he's off finding our old comments to throw in our faces. :)

redsock said...

There is this address:
jaysmail@sportsnet.rogers.com
and they say they might answer a Q on the air!

I emailed this:

When oh when will Jamie Campbell and Pat Tabler shut up about how shallow Manny Ramirez plays at Fenway Park? Do they truly believe that he is just wandering around and the team has no idea where to play their outfielders?

Ramirez is playing where he's playing because the team has decided (after conducting a lot of studies) that that is where it is best to play. And they have decided that anything hit over his head is worth it for what he can catch when playing shallow and how he can hold/throw out runners.

How hard is that to even consider?

The anti-Mannyfest for the last two nights (wondering how he can throw out runners and how it doesn't look pretty) is really getting tiresome.

Just call the game.

***********

I'm sure they'll be discussing this soon!

redsock said...

Hell, if everyone emails something like that in the next inning or so, it might get noticed!

redsock said...

Hint hint.

L-girl said...

You know me, I can't resist a complaint. I'm on it.

L-girl said...

Buffy just called Yook "the on-base magician". Not bad.

Dice walks The Greatest Baseball Player In Both The Known And Unknown Universe, aka Alex Rios.

L-girl said...

Rogers SportsNet gives the Jays standings relative to the Yankees only! As in, Jays are half-game back, Jays are one game ahead. Then they say, behind the Yankees, and both teams chasing the Red Sox.

Amazing.

L-girl said...

Another hit for Slugo!

redsock said...

So if the Jays closed to within 7 games and the Yanks stayed 10 out, would they say "Toronto has a three-game lead"?

They might.

s1c said...

Grumble, been banished to the basement only to turn on the tube and see the YES network on and the MFY's threatening in the third.

Of course this raises the question: Is there a mole in the s1c household or have the in-laws been over?

redsock said...

Basements are nice!

Ococ!

L-girl said...

Papi's back...

L-girl said...

...and he's back big!

Of course.

L-girl said...

Allan banishes himself to the basement all the time. I call it the lair.

L-girl said...

I vote for in-laws.

s1c said...

Noticed NESN focused on Papi when he was in the hole talking to Tito - maybe the closed door session was a loud one?

L-girl said...

"So if the Jays closed to within 7 games and the Yanks stayed 10 out, would they say "Toronto has a three-game lead"?"

They would say Toronto is three games up on the Yankees.

redsock said...

Ortiz: "Meniscus this!"

s1c said...

Actually I don't mind the basement. Am more upset about the YES Network being left on. Turns out that "the boyfriend was watching".

redsock said...

They would say Toronto is three games up on the Yankees.

Like that gets them anything?

The Yankees are 5 games up on the Orioles.

L-girl said...

"Turns out that "the boyfriend was watching"."

Is he from NY?

s1c said...

Nope, CT born and bred.

L-girl said...

At least these guys don't start dancing around the booth when the Jays score. They enjoy it but are pretty reserved.

L-girl said...

"Nope, CT born and bred. "

OK... maybe he was just checking a score. YES is on in our home for that purpose, in between innings.

redsock said...

"the boyfriend was watching"

Sounds like this kid is nothing but trouble. A bad seed.

s1c said...

Had to bring out the wet noodles, he's a tampa bay fan. Am now wondering about the honor program at the local school.

L-girl said...

Better a TB fan than a NYY fan, no?

Better a baseball fan than a nothing.

Or one of those other sports.

redsock said...

tampa fan is fine, as long as he isn't like that heckling guy at the trop.

s1c said...

Have a nephew who is a Jays fan. Of course, I think he decided to be a jays fan to keep the Yankee fans and Sox fans even.

L-girl said...

So if there's a civil war, he'll be the only survivor?

So ...... what horrible arena rock are we singing tonight?

L-girl said...

I'm outta game thread for a while, gotta relax w/ out the screen. GO SOX.

Ooo-oo, double digits...

They must have very large bank accounts.

Here I am at work and cruising the net when I see this Gem at Feeding the Monster:
It’s also interesting that note that had Orza been a bit more prescient about the vagaries of the marketplace, the Sox would, in all likelihood, currently have A-Rod at short and Magglio Ordonez in left. Or, to put it another way, we’d have a guy with 14 HRs, 54 RBIs, and a .992 OPS batting third, a guy with 31 HRs, 87 RBIs, and a 1.083 OPS batting cleanup, and a guy with 13 HRs, 72 RBIs, and a 1.028 OPS hitting fifth. This is, of course, based on a whole mess of assumptions, including the re-signing of Magglio; lots else would have been different as well (Jon Lester, for example, wouldn’t be a member of the Red Sox organization; he was heading to Texas with Manny). But as much as I despise A-Rod — and I do despise A-Rod — that is an absolutely terrifying trio. (Suffice to say that, at least thus far this year, Papi would be the weak link.)

I had forgotten that it was Orza that prevented the A-rod move in 2003.

L-girl said...

"Is it time to start the MDC man-love?"

Here at JoS, you can just plain love him. No prefix needed.

MDC + Jeemer + Snuffer = invincible

Well since the break the jinx comments worked so well yesterday (Rios went 0 for 3) I thought I should point out that Rios is 3 for 7 vs Beckett with a double and Home Run . Also, Aaron Hill is 5 for 14 with 3 doubles. Break out the chants again!!!!!
