G91: Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

Another rookie shuts down the bats.

I wonder if we just remember games like this or does it really happen often? If someone could find out (with Retrosheet/BR data) on how rookie pitchers who have never faced the Red Sox before actually fare, I'd be very interested.

***

Jesse Litsch (4.74, 96 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.44, 130 ERA+)

Sinkerballing rookie Litsch, 22, replaced AJ Burnett in the rotation on July 3. He allowed two unearned runs in seven innings to Oakland in his last start.

After Manny's great catch - and outfield angels:

Buffy: He is a treat to watch out there, isn't he?

Tabler: All series long we've been talking about how shallow Manny plays left field. Well, this is one time it paid off for him.

****

A treat? I thought it "wasn't pretty", Biff.

And this time it paid off. Usually everything just gets by him, and the RS just put up with it.

Watching the game while I do other stuff - be back later.

he swung 3-0? i think the last time he did that was late 2005.

(our emails helped???)

s1c said...

Manny singles on a 3-0 pitch today,
Papi homered on one yesterdy - am now looking for the four horsemen.

allan said...

Mussina has allowed 7 hits in 2.1 IP so far

NY: 000
TB: 21

s1c said...

Upton gets thrown out at home by Matsui to end the third. Still 3-0

s1c said...

Yankees hit for the cycle in the fifth and lead 4=3. Big shot is 2 run HR by CI.

allan said...

Looks like another unknown rookie is giving us the business.

s1c said...

Finally!!!

Flo Being Flo.

laura k said...

"Our emails helped???"

Sure, why not. :)

What's up with this 3-0 swinging?

Let's go Being!

IS buffy vision talking about the wind?

Litsch pitch count 19-11-8-8-19 and about 20 this inning.

allan said...

On Gameday, I've got his pitches at:

19-8-7 11-19-24 (after the BB to the Good Dr.)

allan said...

Gameday is screwing up. Don't think Lowell walked.

allan said...

88 thru 6 for both pitchers.

laura k said...

Buffyvision has been on about wind all day. Much wind on the wind.

s1c said...

I probably wrote it down wrong off of the NESN stat.

Still, 84 pitches after six for Litsch. Another no name rookie dominating the Sox. grrr.

s1c said...

Carlos Pena goes deep with 1 on and with two outs in the 7th its 5-4 d-rays.

Buffyvision has been on about wind all day.

A lot of hot air in the booth?

s1c said...

Opie looking Litsch is finally out of the game.

Lets go Dustin!!

laura k said...

Did you know Litsch was a ballboy for the Devil Rays? Apparently this is why he's not intimidated by major league hitters. Not because he pitched in the minor leagues and has lived baseball all his life. Because he was a ballboy, 10 years ago.

A lot of hot air in the booth?

If you want to launch a balloon, stop by for a fill-up.

How is Casey Fossum still a mjor league pitcher? He is God awful.....

And if anyone should be on Steroids here's the guy...

laura k said...

How is Casey Fossum still a mjor league pitcher?

The same way Doug Mirabelli is still a major league hitter?

Ouch......

It looks like it is 9 oclock at night here in CT it is pouring out side

9casey said...

Why is he still in the game?

9casey said...

Is trying to get him his 13th win that important

laura k said...

Why is Beckett still in the game? It's insane.

s1c said...

Ortiz vs Downs - 3 / 11 with 1 HR and 5 walks (4 K's).

Yankees bat around and are still up with bases loaded. 7-5 mfy

s1c said...

Manny 1 for 2 vs Janssen 3 for 12 vs Downes. Way to go Manny.

allan said...

Damn. Timlin's been pitching his ass off. MDC is mowin' 'em down. This is fun.

s1c said...

Mirabelli and Lugo 3 for 3 against Accardo.

allan said...

Now let's get a run or 2.

allan said...

Hinske gets on for a SWHB?

:>)

allan said...

Why is Ringo hitting? .188!

allan said...

Down by 1 in the 9th, Tito sends hitters to the plate with these batting averages:

.196
.185
.210

:<#

allan said...

Actually for Hinske and Belli, those were their avg after their outs. ... Tek and Pena watch from the bench.

laura k said...

I don't have much faith in Varitek, but at least there's a chance he'll hit.

Pfft. As Redsock said earlier, another no-name dominating the mighty Sox.

Good thing we'll be facing real pitchers in October! :)

allan said...

Because he was a ballboy, 10 years ago.

Quick, we better sign MC Hammer!!!

laura k said...

You mean it's hammer time?

allan said...

He was a batboy for the A's back in the Charlie Finley days.

Maybe he can be our backup catcher.

s1c said...

Sox have lost 14 games by one run - Jays have three of those wins.

Varitek vs Accardo - 1 for 1
Drew vs Accardo - 0 for 2
Pena vs Accardo - 2 for 5.

Why was Hinske batting?

s1c said...

Press conference with Beckett - How do you feel about only getting 2 runs in support?

A: Thats for you guys to worry about to fill you papers. We got people playing hurt, I was the second best pitcher today. I don't worry about Fucking runs, I worry about getting outs and I was the second best pitcher today.

laura k said...

I know. I was making Seinfeld joke!

laura k said...

Uh-oh, I just realized our lead is in single digits again! The Yankees are now over .500 (by one game).

I guess it's time to panic!!!!!!!!

Tee hee.

For some reason that takes a little sting out the lose for me. Nah, it doesn't

And Tito has to at least pinch hit Tek for Belli, but for Pena he can sit there and rot, he stinks......

I was suprised he pinch hit Pedroia for Cora.....I was wondering if Pedroia got on if he would have had Kyle Snyder run for him........

I'm not a subscriber so I can't see all the data, but I think this is the first step:
Pitching gamelog finder
Boy Genius era -> present
opposing starter's team wins
sort by ER in that game
sort in ascending order
first 30 career games (just an overestimate)

I didn't like several things in this game, but I find it really difficult to get worked up over any loss this year. Even the best team is going to lose one-third of their games. I figure this is just one of them.

Not saying anyone else shouldn't fume if that's where your head is. I just can't.

Was on the Monster today. It was indeed "hold your hat on" windy. Even took a kid's 5-dollar bill up and out of the park, onto Lansdowne.

I do remember Manny swinging and missing on 3-0, then singling once it got to 3-2. Is that what s1c meant, or did he swing at 3-0 twice???

I kid you not, Gordon Edes was just on NESN saying that the Yanks are gonna make a run and to fasten our seatbelts because it's going to be an interesting ride. If he's saying that, I can only imagine what the NY media will say, after the Yanks' impressive slaying of the mighty Cyclops Ray.

s1c said...

to 9casey - My point was that if you watch Beckett in his press conferences:

AFTER win its all about the bats.

After loss - I fucking sucked.

He never throws the offense under the bus.

To Jere - Yes I meant what you said.

I didn't realize your were making a point, I thought you were just quoting Beckett.

I haven't seen a pitcher in a while throw his team under a bus for not hitting except maybe Mussina.....
