Casey At The Bat - And In The Cards

Casey At The Bat -- in baseball card format -- as the final post by Ben Henry at The Baseball Card Blog.

This is an amazing showcase of creativity and wit! And it's exactly what you need as the snow continues to fall.

(Thanks to Red at SG for bringing it to my attention!)

Slightly more legible than rendering the poem in ass tattoos, but whatever floats their (and your) boat.

Wow! Beautiful. And so well done.

That was awesome. Thanks for the link.

Perusing the archives, this looks like a great blog.

Where is the poem set? In Stockton California where I did most of my growing up the local minor league team change their name from the Stockton Ports to the Mudville Nine. They claimed the poem was set in Stockton. I called BS back then but they must have had some backup to do such a drastic thing like that. What do you know?

Stockton apparently was called Mudville (among other names) prior to its incorporation.

Wikipedia suggests Holliston, MA (author grew up in Worcester) and Stockton, CA (author covered baseball for the SF Examiner) as possible Mudvilles though notes it's probably all just fiction.

That's all fine and good but what I wanted to know was did anybody have any other answers that are not on the internet.

Benjamin said...

Answers that are not on the Internet? I don't follow.

And that let me google that for you thing makes me look like i'm an ass that can't search.

I've heard the Holliston answer, but I went to school pretty close to Holliston, so I can't put too much stock in it.

No, it makes me look like an ass for insinuating that you can't search, which I suppose I am. (I find that thing hilarious, though.)

It is pretty funny. I wasn't mad. I would use it too.

I want to know if there is any wisdom beyond the internet that someone who is obsessed with this poem might have. Someone who may run his own blog and may have at some time posted a thing about it.

I bet a SABR Journal has it. I'm not sure how you'd search those. Public library?

Wow I guess I am too vague. Allan what do you know of this poem?

laura k said...

And I am too dense. (As usual.)

Allan's not obsessed with this poem. I doubt we even have a copy in print anywhere.

laura k said...

Unless it's his secret obsession. I never got the impression Allan's secret obsession would be poetry, but they say you never really know someone...

He's a baseball guy though and this is a baseball thing more than a real artsy poem thing.
