G83: Red Sox 5, Athletics 2

Athletics - 100 010 000 - 2 7 0
Red Sox - 022 001 00x - 5 9 1

***

Dana Eveland (7.40, 55 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.67, 126 ERA+)

Eveland faced the Red Sox back on April 14 in Oakland. 4.2-8-5-3-2, 108. The A's won 6-5 in 12 innings. (That was a horrible night; Dice went one inning and Lopez blew the game in the 12th.)

Eveland has not started a game since May 1 (log). His last major league appearance was in relief on May 3, when he faced four batters and got none of them out. Two days later, he was optioned to Sacramento (AAA), where he posted a 3.49 ERA in 12 starts. He threw 89 pitches on Friday (5-5-1-5-4) and will be working on three days rest.

Beckett, who has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his last nine starts, has not faced the A's this season.

Dana Eve-land: on my girls team, twice.

Let's take our revenge for that April game.

I don't know about this group, but I've always liked the Boston Dirt Dogs site. It seems lately however that's it's getting really dark in nature. As anyone else thought that?

You're just thinking this now?!?!!?!?

(insert jaw-dropping emoticon here)

BDD has been taking potshots at various players since at least 2002. Many observers feel the majority of its snide comments were/are directed at players with darker skin. He's still taking shots at Pedro -- and the anti-Manny headlines will likely continue well into 2035. In May, BDD said Ortiz "certainly seems" to be cooked. the following month, Tiz threw up a .320 average and a 1.062 OPS.

There are witty headlines, but it's usually another extension of the negativity of the Boston media. There are nothing but smiles when the Red Sox have won 10 in a row, but after a bad loss or two, look out.

You would think that, after 2004 and 2007, that industry would be on its last legs, gasping for another breath, but there remains a strong market for people who want to whine constantly, even in the fact of reality, about how shitty the Red Sox are doing.

I can see Beckett feasting on the A's tonight. Last night Smoltz and Saito were leaving breaking balls up all night and Bard and Ramirez had no problem throwing the cheese by them. Becks should establish the fastball and blow em away tonight.

I was gonna say, I came across that Dirt Dogs site way back in 03 or 04, when I consider myself highly uneducated in baseball and highly susceptible to the black hole of shit that redsock mentioned abouve. (lol - what a canadian typo to make, i'm not going to bother correcting that, that's just funny to me)

Anyway I thought that site was crass and moronic way back then and wrote it off in the search for enlightened red sox blogs. Haven't really been back since, but I have seen a couple things on it as a result of it being linked to from the Globe's Extra Bases Blog and man - it's brutal!

Can't really blame someone for opening their eyes to the truth of a particular site or publication. It took me a year to open my eyes to the uh, underlying preferences, of the Drudge Report.

s1c said...

You have to remember that BDD is owned by the globe. nuff said.

FY's wife kicked him out of the hospital room (sounds like my wife) so he is in the line up tonight.

Cabin Mirror, interviewed on the MLB Home Plate channel on SIRIUS XM Radio, on the new Yankee Stadium:

"I'm not a big fan of it. Nothing pops there, nothing pops. The old stadium, you walked in, you knew this was where Mantle played and DiMaggio. It was just that old school. I got booed a lot louder. They didn't boo me as loud here. I like to get booed. They were too nice to me ..."

Globe says Mrs. FY "went into labor yesterday (she is seven weeks from her due date) and was hospitalized. Doctors were able to stop the labor and stabilize her. She is currently resting at the hospital."

(Tito: "When I was playing, I missed one of my kid’s births and I’m still paying for it 22 years later. ... I had to wait until [the next day, an off-day]".)

***

Globe:

Bates was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his major league debut yesterday. Francona said that Bates was markedly jittery and a little scared.

"His heart was pounding a little bit and I think that got to him," he said.

Francona said he tried to jokingly "get on him a little bit in the dugout," but Bates, infinitely nervous, took it seriously.

"I told him I was kidding around but he was still a dazed," said Francona. "Maybe I shouldn’t have done that."

"a bit dazed", I guess.

If you scroll up so that the two last lines are below the page break, that looks like a pretty good lineup. Lowrie and Lowell should come back soon.
(Not that I expect them to be great. But a bit above average offense from Lowell and the ability to field the position from Lowrie would be nice).

I think much of the team was preoccupied last night with the sudden absence of FY and the condition of Kelli. Most of the red Sox players are fathers and all probably respect the helpless terror pregnancy complications bring--that feeling that there is fuck all you can do to influence the course of events. Hopefully, with the situation stabilized they'll be more focused on the national pastime. My heart goes out to both Kelli and Dustin and I hope the little one stays put for a few more weeks.

s1c said...

Sounds like baby and her are better. Hoping he can relax tonight and play well but that can be tough.

Need Beckett to really be a stopper tonight.

allan said...

Ben Collins, Globe Extra Bases blog:

"Francona said Mark Kotsay’s right calf injury is feeling better but Aaron Bates will make his second career start at second base tonight as a precaution."

Fuckin' bloggers -- ya can't trust them to get anything right.

BDD works for the Globe now, but his offensive style pre-dates that by several years. It's not "Globe, nuff said" - it's all down to BDD himself.

Ish, you may not realize Redsock and Accudart go back a long way. High school or so. :)

laura k said...

I hope Kelli, Dustin and baby are all well. Seven weeks before due date is not life-threatening (absent other issues). Even if it's a premie, there's every reason to think they'll all be fine.

allan said...

Eck says he expects Beckett to be on his game tonight.

Well, duh. Would he ever say "I doubt Beckett lasts three innings tonight, it's time for him to be garbage again"? ... He wouldn't even say that about Dice.

s1c said...

My impression is that it has gotten worse since the globe bought the site (I am not sure that original poster is even there anymore).

As for the baby - I can totally relate to what FY is going through since b-fly was the 4th pregnancy for bh and I.

Zenslinger said...

I used to find Dirt Dogs amusing, and then use its links to other Sox articles. Now I hardly ever look at it. It seems very knee jerky. Everything's either a celebration or a disaster.

allan said...

The guy who started it -- Steve Silva -- still runs it. I think he's really the only one, though there are some contributors here and there.

Fragging gdgd, I sign on to MLB, but when I click for GDGD it asks me to login again when I want to see the extra crap. FRAGGGING GDGD!!!

"since b-fly was the 4th pregnancy for bh and I."

And she is your oldest? That's really tough. Amazing that you kept trying, really.

Hopefully those worries are premature (!) for FY and FYette.

s1c said...

b-fly is the oldest and only, figured we better quit while ahead.

Fragging Hairston

eck in fine form, displaying his ignorance. i fully expect him to say:

A Conformer said...

Hopefully those worries are premature (!) for FY and FYette.

I'm trying to figure out how to read this to myself. Fayette? Fuck yeah-ette? Fuck yette? Hmmm...

Oh, BTW, fuck. No yeah about it. Let's try not to give up lots of runs, M'kay?

laura k said...

Oldest and only, a-ha. Glad you got lucky at last.

I think F-Y-ette.

A Conformer said...

Do you mean eff-why-ette?

Do you actually read FY as eff why? I always read it as fuck yeah... although MFY is always em-eff-why, and JTC is jay-tee-see. Then again, FKR is fuckers. There's no real rule to it, I guess.

laura k said...

Yes, I meant Eff-Why-Ette.

I read all the TLAs as letters: ell-oh-ell, em-eff-why, jay-tee-cee.

Conformer, we have this in common, I always have to know how things are pronounced when I read. I often ask people online how they pronounce their names. No one else seems to, but I can't read unless I know!

Oh, I think I say fuckers for FKR too.

Safe? Crap.

allan said...

wow, eck sure took his stupid pills today

s1c said...

geez, the way you are beating up on eck tonight i'm almost afraid to ask how you liked casey last weekend.

Fragging tek, you have to stop you jackass

i guess "the computer" crashed.

A Conformer said...

The run scoring double play is almost the worst 'in play, run(s)' there is. The only worse one is when one run scores, but the next runner is out at the plate, making the 3rd out.

Rob said...

This Ellsbury fellow is fast.

s1c said...

Actually eck with two strikes the good hitters are not even noticing the runner.

as amy would say

allan said...

don don don

if you are taking about the oakland offense, why look at team batting average?

how about looking at runs scored?

the team with the best batting average does not win the game -- it's runs.

allan said...

it's a fucking crime we have only 2 runs.

let's go tek, shock me.

Zenslinger said...

Tek batting sixth...not ideal.

Hooray for leads!
Also glad to hear FYette is apparently out of the woods. That's scary. My sister's twin boys were born about 8 weeks early, and this was 28 years ago. Very scary. 1 was 1 lb, 6 oz. the other was 2 lb, 2 oz at birth. 6 weeks in the IC Nursery. But they're fine now except for a very small speech issue with one of them.

tim said...

What's that smell? Must be all that cheese and gas exuding out of the river Charles...

two

SC just showed Tek's baserunning booboo, and also another by the Brewer's Cameron. He ran into a batted ball between 2nd and 3rd. And not a hard rip he couldn't move away from. A lazy bounder that he just ran into.
Oh the little things.

Wait - just walked back in the room as the ticker was going across the bottom of the screen.
Did that say 2 SB for BAY?

allan said...

And "soft salad".

allan said...

steal in the 7th was on a pickoff move. giambi did not know the pitcher was throwing and had moved off the bag. he had to lunge back for it and could not make a throw!

i have him down advancing on a WP in the 3rd. but naturally don did not say what the call was. maybe it was a SB???

SoSock said...

OK, checked the box. 2 SB on top of a 2B, HR, R, and 2 ribbies.
Nice day.

SoSock said...

Of course, what I saw was just the GDGD scoing. I trust yours more :)

tim said...

Yeah after the second steal, they announced it was his first 2 steal game since 2006 with Pit or something.
