ALDS: Lowrie On Roster, Baldelli Uncertain

The addition of Jed Lowrie (over Nick Green) to the ALDS roster comes as no surprise, but it was a little strange to hear Gil Velazquez was chosen over Chris Woodward to be on call, if needed.

The Red Sox would love to have Rocco Baldelli available to face lefties Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders in Games 3 and 4, but his status (left hip flexor) is still up in the air. Rosters are not due until 1 PM on Thursday.

Mike Lowell's sprained right thumb is now fine. "I'm a prime-time lean machine right now. Write that one."
Example
LDS Today:
Rockies / Phillies at 2:30
Twins / Yankees at 6:00
Cardinals / Dodgers at 9:30
The Sporting News asked 34 people in and around baseball for their prediction of the Twins/MFY series. Two of them: Fred Lynn (Yankees in 3) and Ian Kinsler (Twins in 5).

I'm so hoping for the Twins to win, but I bet the Yankees will spank them in 3 or 4.

If you're the Red Sox, would you rather play 4 out of 7 games in Yankee Stadium or the Metrodome? They'd have to win at least one at either place.

allan said...

6 of 8 ESPN "experts" pick Red Sox.

(8 of 8 say MFY; 7 of 8 say Cards over LAD; 5 of 8 pick Phillies over Rockies)

tim said...

If I ran a tabloid it would read...

Let the great choke begin!

stefan said...

The unanimity from ESPN on the MFY/Twins is surprising. Don't these guys know that these things are basically toss-ups, that even with a strongly favored team you've only got perhaps a 60% chance of winning the series? This is equivalent of 8 of 8 ESPN analysts thinking that Joe Mauer won't get on base the next time he's up. I'll take the Twins (in 4!) for the following nonsensical reason: it's a classic case of the MFY being expected to win, while the Twins having nothing to lose. The best part will be Pavano's win.

Other picks: Dodgers in 4, Phillies in 5 in a slugfest, and Sox in 5.

"I dropped a Sox beat writer a line this morning to see if there was any specific reason the Sox are going with Velazquez rather than Woodward as a utility infield contingency, and he just emailed me back:
"Something extremely personal is going on with Woodward right now. It is a family emergency that the team has not divulged."
Not much to go on, and I can't help but wonder if it involves his newborn son.

Listened to Franconas interview on WEEI today. There are only two questions left, MDC and Baldy. MDC because of the car accident and Baldy because of his hip. Rosters have to be in at 10 according to Terry (10 a.m in LA?).

Sox in 4 at worst, would love for a sweep.

As for the MFY's and Twinkies - well it is the Twinkies and they will roll over showing their neck in the 5th inning for the alpha dog MFY's.

allan said...

I saw 1 PM in the papers, so 10 AM LA time makes sense.

I said Sox in 4, which seems to be the popular choice here.

A Twins win in the series would be an upset, but it's only 3-of-5. Far stranger things have happened.

Cliff Lee: 8IP, 4H, 0BB. How demoralizing for the Rockies.

Zenslinger said...

Shit, he's gonna try to finish the game.

allan said...

Twins will ride their momentum and beat CC. Then they get to rest up -- and keep attacking on Friday. Go Twins!

Zenslinger said...

Rockies avoid th' shutout. Good on 'em.

I'd love to see CC begin the postseason the way he began the season (4.1IP, 6ER). But it may be too much to ask for.

allan said...

Are people watching the MFY game?

tim said...

I'll be watching. Gonna slip out for dinner early on though.

allan said...

Rob said...

How many times will Chip Caray say "Fisted" and "Pounded"?

allan said...

Single for Jesus Christ II.

Zenslinger said...

I'll follow at work and maybe catch the tail end at The Bar if it's close.

I forgot when I made my comment about CC that he had a bad outing to end the season as well. Not many bad ones in between, though, and pitched 230 innings.

Ugh, CC gets out of the first...

allan said...

How many routine fly balls will the Chipster call singles?

God, he is dreadful.

tim said...

What in the blue fuck is this TBS pitchtrax shit?

tim said...

Did they mention how hard the wind is blowing out to the little league distance fence in right? I heard it was supposed to be strong.

allan said...

Chip: "214 home runs for these Yankees. ... Amazing!"

oy

tim said...

Did you hear him call the MFY lineup "awesome" too? lolz.

tim said...

This pitchtrax thing is driving me batshit insane.

allan said...

can you really refer to a $200 million signing as a "pick-up"?

tim said...

Tomorrow's Whine-flavoured Oatmeal with Captain Asswipe himself pitching:

Chone Figgins 3B

Jeff Mathis C
Erick Aybar SS

RHP John Lackey

allan said...

Jeter with a beautiful, awe-inspiring play there to prevent the DP. Only JC himself could've done better.

allan said...

Slappy in playoffs

0 for last 27 with runners on.

allan said...

1 RBI in last (I think) 59 playoff AB.

allan said...

the guy behind him?

there is 2 outs!

tim said...

Good to see Mr. October back to his old habits.

allan said...

"pretty well hit"

um, no, chip. routine fly.

allan said...

chip covers for himself by saying the wind knocked it down. is that the wind that's blowing out?

tim said...

Oh wow, they had this pitchtrax shit on the earlier game too. Looks like it's a widescreen thing only, because I was watching on the slingbox and it wasn't there.

Anyway it's fucking ANNOYING and should be banned. I hope for a Sox sweep so I only have to put up with it for 3 games. And if FOX has this shit, well I just may go all-radio for the playoffs.

Zenslinger said...

Kubel! HR! Now!

You did it all year, buddy...

allan said...

there is no doubt we'll be going radio only after the alds. fuck fox. and if don was not doing the games, it would be 100%.

we are trying twins radio now. without tbs, i may not have anything to post!

tim said...

Shit, according to gdgd the wind is blowing WNW - meaning from right to third.

tim said...

I don't even want to watch FOX at all if they have this pitchtrax garbage that TBS is pulling. I shit you not, allan, it is awful.

allan said...

no idea who the twins radio guys are, but i am feeling more calm already.

allan said...

i'm watching tbs too, what is this trax, is it during live stuff, or replays?

tim said...

You know the Amica pitch zone? It's like that, but permanently on the center field "regular" camera.

allan said...

why am i not seeing that?

.... oh jetes, is you could move 2 feet to your left, you would have had that.

Zenslinger said...

Tim -- tell me you're kidding about the pitch zone on the actual screen.

Live? Not on replays?

tim said...

I think it's a widescreen thing. It's off to the far right.

Like I said, when I was watching on the slingbox while in class (shhhh) that was non-widescreen and I did not see it.

allan said...

could it be "tbs hd"?

tim said...

Fuck you Traxzone

Click that for an example of what I'm talking about.

allan said...

SAGER!

tim said...

Ahh! Craig Sager, my eyes! My eyes!

allan said...

K-ano!

Rob said...

Sager looked conservative tonight.

He was wearing purple last night.

Amy said...

Wow, a non-Red Sox game thread. And comments are working! I will be in and out. But good to "see" you all here.

GO TWINS!

tim said...

Yeah, he looked like Barney yesterday.

allan said...

Being in Minnesota, Sager was referencing his love of Prince.

Zenslinger said...

This seems like a really good game so far. The Twins pitcher really hanging in there. But I'm just on GDGD.

tim said...

ugh. twin killing.

allan said...

Come on, O-Cab, Amy loves you.

Amy said...

Yeah, he's still my favorite RS shortstop since Nomar. Though Seabass has really come up in my rankings this season.

allan said...

dong pls

Amy said...

Never should have let that guy go...

(I know, I know...I've heard the drill. Just trying to get a rise out of you all.)

tim said...

Show us why you're supposed to be the MVP according to lots of people, Mauer.

allan said...

hey mauer, you're the mvp - act/hit like one.

tim said...

Nice. Now bring em home, next hitter Cuddyer.

Amy said...

Heh, Joe Mauer had the same problem I do: sacroiliac joint.

And yet he is hitting 28 HRs this season, and what the hell have I done lately? Maybe he will share his secret with me.

allan said...

dud loafing?

too bad there is 2 outs, time for cudd'yer maker.

allan said...

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tim said...

Wooooooooooooo

Amy said...

Yes! O-Cab scores the first run!

Zenslinger said...

allan said...

Swisher can't catch a Cab in NYC.

allan said...

CC: oh should i cover the plate?

Zenslinger said...

Ahhhh-HA HA HA.

If the Yanks lose this series, I will hose myself down with beer in the street for joy.

allan said...

twins radio enjoying it.

i am not missing the chipster.

Hopefully this dunce guy minny's got on the hill isn't one of those guys that lets loose once he has a lead.

More of the same would be greatly appreciated for about 7 innings.

tim said...

Zen my only question is how do you get beer through a hose? Unless you rig up some sort of keg device.

Unknown said...

I see we have a quasi-game thread going on here.

Passedballa really living up to his name already.

Zenslinger said...

Hmmm, maybe you actually have a thought there....

Come...COME to California! The state budget crisis means you can barely make copies for your classes, BUT.

But -- you can buy joints legally and without shame.

Actually, I kind of wonder who does buy them -- y'know, in that format. Too damn much smoke at once.

tim said...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

FUCK YOU TBS

"And a base - fly ball, I should say..."

Amy said...

California? Sounds good, but way too far from Fenway for me (as well as the Cape, NYC, my family, etc.). But I'd love to get back for a visit. I have only been there once, six years ago, and it was one of my favorite vacations ever.

Damn...no passed balls on this side, please.

Unknown said...

Fuck

Amy said...

Damn....

allan said...

oh fuck me.

tim said...

The excitement on that was incredible. I feel like I'm watching YES.

allan said...

i maintain we'll have some schadenfreude soon.

tim said...

And yup, joints are a waste of weed.

Amy said...

Hope so, Allan. I hate gloating Yankees.

Zenslinger said...

Damn that calm-eyed bastard.

allan said...

douche-eira dp pls

Amy said...

I hate the Yankee worship going on here. Who are these TBS announcers?

allan said...

fookin' punto

Zenslinger said...

Zen my only question is how do you get beer through a hose?

Tim, in California there are beer hoses on every corner in urban areas. It's not always as cold as you want, but children are seen drinking from hoses to make sure they grow up to be soft-headed liberals.

tim said...

Fucking faulty infield. Fuck you Cabrera (and punto)! Sorry Amy.

allan said...

chip caray

Amy said...

I hope post-season ARod performs as usual.

Amy said...

S'okay, Tim. I will be rooting against him when we play them in the ALCS.

Amy said...

Thanks, Allan. I missed the beginning of the game so wasn't sure who TBS was using tonight.

tim said...

Must be a new thing Zen, I don't recall any of that last time I was in Cali...haha

Yup, this yankee worship is ridic. They were just talking about how after Duensing went through the lineup once, the super-intelligent genius yankees talk to each other about what he's throwing and how his pitches are moving.

You know, unlike the other 29 teams.

Unknown said...

Classic A-Rod

allan said...

seems like the twins got to ccc the second time around too -- did the chipster mention their smarts?

Amy said...

Looks like ARod is granting my wish so far. 0 for 2 with men on base.

tim said...

We already went over this, the concept of Minnesota scoring runs is unfathomable to them.

allan said...

I love to get a list of all their MFY-luv, but it would have to be accurate and I can't bring myself to actually go back and listen to any of it.

tim said...

Hoping birdbathia hits 90 pitches this inning, and somehow the Twins regain the lead.

allan said...

molina will catch AJ on in game 2 friday and dumbo ain't too pleased, given his short, clipped replies to the press.

tim said...

WOW.

I want to mute this so bad but I feel like I'd be doing a disservice to everyone here by not posting their bullshit.

Amy said...

"illustrious franchise"

BLECH

allan said...

twins radio: "easy play for milky cabrera"

tim said...

I'm sure that by looking at the screen, Allan can wager a guess as to what they're discussing thats inducing me to hit mute...

Unknown said...

I think I'm going to call the FCC and complain about all of the blowjobs the TBS crew is giving to Jeter.

Amy said...

Harv back now. Not pleased with Posada's PB.

allan said...

"LOOK AT ALL THOSE NUMBERS ON THE WALL! (swoon)

allan said...

was i close?

Amy said...

Do you think the announcers have heard of the Twins? It's amazing how they have nothing to say about ANY of their players. I mean, how about some Joe Mauer worship?

allan said...

Twins are the Washington Generals to the Yankees' Globetrotters. And if you recall, you never got no background on the Generals' point guard.

tim said...

It was more along the lines of the "calm eyes" remark.

allan said...

shemp grounds out on 1st pitch, heads back to the clubhouse to watch porn.

Amy said...

allan said...

talking about swisher

".. if you've ever read the book moneyball, from billy beane ..."

WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Zenslinger said...

Extra Bases says Byrd in for ALDS pitching staff as long man, MDC obviously out. Still no word on which two of Baldelli/Anderson/Gathright will be in because Rocco's health status still uncertain.

I have been waiting a few years for his steady incline....

Amy said...

O-Cab on base again.

WHy can't we get players like that?

Thats kind of my point, he has never really been a consistent go to guy....

Amy said...

True. But is there anyone in our bullpen who HAS been reliably consistent this season?

allan said...

MDC has his problems, but Byrd is no OTT-machine. Neither one will see much time, if all goes well.

Rob said...

Allan makes the point here about Byrd/MDC.

If either of them pitch in this series then something's gone wrong.

Rob said...

Or gone very very well.

allan said...

or we are up 18-2.

Rob said...

I am so happy there's a game thread for this game.

Zenslinger said...

MDC's been downright excellent for pretty long stretches. I think he's just having a typical relief-pitcher career: a bit up and down.

allan said...

now all the other mfy games will be on the same nights as sox games, so it'll be all in one. easier.

i think it's neat that the regulars came by to see if anything was going on. ... i guess that's what happened.

allan said...

next to impossible for a reliever to be consistent all year long.

Unknown said...

Shit

Oh, man, let's have an orgasm over Jeter.

allan said...

a slappy rbi?

what a crazy game. it's got everything.
