ALDS1: Angels 5, Red Sox 0

Red Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 4 3
Angels - 000 030 20x - 5 7 1
Torii Hunter's three run home run in the fifth was all Jon Lackey (7.1-4-0-1-4, 114) and the Angels needed in Game 1.

Boston could get nothing going with the bats. Lackey retired the first eight before a single by Alex Gonzalez and an error on catcher's interference with Jacoby Ellsbury put runners at first and second. But Dustin Pedroia flew out to right to end the inning.

A leadoff single by Jason Bay in the fifth was immediately wiped out by a double play grounder from Mike Lowell. With two outs in the sixth, Pedroia singled and Victor Martinez walked. Lackey fell behind Kevin Youkilis 3-0, but battled back and got out of trouble with a fielder's choice grounder. J.D. Drew began the eighth with a single and went to second on a wild pitch, but Gonzalez, Ellsbury and Pedroia could not move him any farther.

The Angels scored twice in the seventh off Ramon Ramirez and Takashi Saito. It was a strange inning that featured Juan Rivera grounding into a double play, but reaching first safely. The bases were loaded and the play went 5-2-5. The inning ended when Drew threw out Kendry Morales at the plate.

The game was also marked by horrible umpiring. CB Bucknor blew two obvious calls at first base -- one with the runner 4-5 feet from the bag -- both against the Red Sox with Howie Kendrick running, though they both happened in innings in which Los Angeles did not score. The Angels also got burned a few times, including the second out of that 5-2-5 DP. The catcher's interference call by Joe West was also strange.
Example
Lineups:
Red Sox Angels
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF Chone Figgins, 3B
Dustin Pedroia, 2B Bobby Abreu, RF
Victor Martinez, C Torii Hunter, CF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B Vladimir Guerrero, DH
David Ortiz, DH Juan Rivera, LF
Jason Bay, LF Kendry Morales, 1B
Mike Lowell, 3B Howie Kendrick, 2B
J.D. Drew, RF Jeff Mathis, C
Alex Gonzalez, SS Erick Aybar, SS
Example
Jon Lester (3.41, 139 ERA+) / John Lackey (3.83, 119 ERA+)

Here we go!

While it's great to hear another team deal with endless questions about a seeming inability to beat a certain opponent -- Torii Hunter: "There ain't no team in my head" -- the fact that the Red Sox have beaten the Angels in nine of their last 10 LDS games means little to the series that begins tonight.

Lester thinks there may be an "added confidence. I wouldn't say that in an arrogant way, but we know we've played this team well, and they play us tough."

With Rocco Baldelli "feeling minimally better" yesterday, it seems likely that Brian Anderson will take his spot as an extra outfielder. If so [Update: it's so], this is the Red Sox roster:
Pitchers Lineup/Bench
Jon Lester Victor Martinez
Josh Beckett Kevin Youkilis
Clay Buchholz Dustin Pedroia
Daisuke Matsuzaka Alex Gonzalez
Mike Lowell
Jonathan Papelbon Jason Bay
Hideki Okajima Jacoby Ellsbury
Daniel Bard J.D. Drew
Ramon Ramirez David Ortiz
Billy Wagner
Takashi Saito Jason Varitek
Paul Byrd Jed Lowrie
Casey Kotchman
Joey Gathright
Brian Anderson
Theo Epstein:
I'm filled with a lot of anticipation, more than anything else. There's not a lot we can do at this point. ... [W]e're watching the fates unwind.

I'm STOKED! Can't wait for this baby to begin!

Can't forget some other essentials:
This, and our good friend the light switch of course, which I'm too lazy to find right now.

And lolz to that NYDN page.

Ish said...

Where's the light switch? :)

This might be one of the best sports days in the last few months. Three baseball games, plus the Bruins game that starts at 7 and ends right around 9:30, leading right into the Red Sox game!

I want to see Mr. Aybar do his little dance tonight!

Youk said the other day that he can't wait to see the rally monkey because that means the Angels will be behind. YEAH!

Hoping this game breaks the pattern we've seen so far of the home teams winning Game 1.

redsock said...

Where's the light switch? :)
... Mr. Aybar ...

Fixed!

FenFan said...

Totally forgot about the Bruins tonight... who are playing the Ducks at the Garden! Boston thumps Anaheim twice in one night?

redsock said...

Weird.

When teams win Game 1 of the LDS, do they win the series?

ALDS: 14-14
NLDS: 25-3

Eric Wilbur: TBS SUCKS!:

"Caray listed four teams with which Cabrera has been to the playoffs – the Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, and Angels. That's great information, Chip. Except that he hasn't even played for two of them, never mind take them to October. ...

When the Yankee Stadium crowd was chanting "MVP" with Derek Jeter up at bat – and top candidate Joe Mauer behind the plate – you might have thought that opened the door for some valid debate about the AL award. Instead, Caray took it and nominated Jeter as one of three possible Yankee MVP's, including Mark Teixeira and ... "maybe" Mariano Rivera."

What a shitshow.

I could spend the entire afternoon surfing around for stuff, but I'm going to try and refrain. If you see anything worth sharing, link away!

Andy, I was wondering to L last night what I'm going to do with Games 2 and 3 when I'm at work. I thought I should bring some JD in one of those little plastic condiment containers. She did not agree.

redsock said...

I forget - Are you going to Game 2 also?

Ish said...

If you bring food with you this weekend, make sure to cook something where you can add JD into it. Just a shot. Burn the alcohol off but still have the JD all up in your food.

Hmm. I wouldn't make it two seconds on Top Chef.

Neat story about a film about baseball in Alaska. Mentions Bill Lee -- who played there before his MLB career -- and Terry Francona.

"You've got to be pretty awful to make fans pine for the return of Tim McCarver."

haha - YUP!

Don't agree with what he said about the pitch box though.

tim said...

lol ish.

Your quickfire challenge is to make something with JD in it THAT you can smuggle into a ballpark. You have 30 minutes, go!

I would love to see Tom's remarks judging that. "Well your yellowfin tuna with gnocchis in JD was overall a tasty dish, I just don't see how I would be able to get that through Angels security. Sorry ish, you lose"

I was invited to tonights game by some of our lawyers that I work with a lot. Maybe you should ask your lawyers for tickets A. I am hoping that they like me enough to ask me back for game two. I took friday off just in case. My suite is in left field just foul of the pole. I usually am more knowledgeable then most baseball fans, attributed to this blog, so I can hold my own with the Angels fans. Lawyers like a good fight so fingers crossed game two is in my future. In any event today should be ranked up there with my wedding and the xmas I got the huge sized GI Joe aircraft carrier.

Forgot to include this:

Peter Abraham, the newest Red Sox reporter for the Globe, has the umpiring crew for the Red Sox-Angels series: Joe West (crew chief), CB Bucknor, Eric Cooper, Greg Gibson, Brian Gorman and Dan Iassogna.

Curt Schilling has some thoughts on that sextet:

October 5, 7:55 PM [he mentions Chuck Merriweather, but he's not part of this crew]: "FWIW that might be the worst umpiring crew in the history of post season baseball. Bucknor, Gibson AND Merriweather? Oh and Joe West, the umpire who is well known to hate the Sox as much as any man ever.
At least in Joe's defense he's a decent ump, albeit one who has stated EXPLICITLY on the field he holds grudges and gets even, CB, Gibby and Chuck just suck, no two ways about it. Chuck's at least a nice guy though. He feels bad when he blows calls. CB has never been good enough to ID a bad or missed call and as far as Gibby knows he's NEVER MADE a bad call.
Direct quote from Greg Gibson during a game "Do you know you are arguing with the best young umpire in the game right now?""

October 6, 3:52 PM
: "FWIW and I hope I am wrong, Greg Gibson will have major impact on one or more games this post season. The obvious choice would be for the game(s) he's behind the plate, and I can assure you I'd lobby to not be on the mound for that game. He's an umpire, when all is said and done, who would WORK to make you know he's the KING over getting a good questec score.
Oh and for you trivia buffs, I think Iassonga or whatever his name is, is the man I am holding directly responsible for the death of the quest tec camera in Arizona.
"The machine won't let me call that pitch a strike" was the quote he gave me...
Hit me with a bat made of cat shit... Huh?"

***********

Me:
If you recall, Gibson was the guy who started shit with Greinke and Hillman when the Red Sox were in KC.

Back in 2005, Giboson tossed hitting coach Ron Jackson. Tito: "The explanation was he read his lips. That guy can't see the (bleeping) ball in front of him. That was a (bad) answer. The way he threw him out, it's hard to take when someone's not honest with you. When a guy misses a pitch like that he has to take some heat. That was a fabulous pitch. The only one fooled more by the pitch than Sheffield was the umpire. ... [About getting ejected himself] I didn't want to watch him umpire anymore."

***

SoSHer Dick Drago:
"There was a game a few years ago where Bucknor got into it with Coco Crisp; the next hitter was Lugo, 2 outs in the ninth, and Bucknor called him out on strikes on a ball a foot outside...then gave it a Ron Luciano style flourish, removed his mask, flexed up, and strutted off the field. He basically took out his anger at Crisp on Lugo...if a another player had shown up a guy like that he'd probably get drilled on the next pitch. It is amazing that there were apparently NO consequences."

CB also apparently called Lugo a bitch as Lugo was walking back to the dugout. [The box has Lugo batting before Crisp, however.]

****

A bad call in Boston's favour should start a HUGE LAAAAA meltdown.

redsock said...

B-Ref links for all 3 games now in!

tim said...

Having a serious debate here.

I have a ball hockey game at 10. Can't miss it.

I will be PVRing this regardless. Do I get home at 11:15 and start watching from the beginning...or do I check the score at the game and watch live/thread when I get back?

I'm leaning towards the latter.

Ish said...

You assholes are getting me pumped up for this game! WAY TOO PUMPED UP.

I'm sitting here and I'm like and evil doctor rubbing his hands together going, "Yessssss... I like this!" and then seconds later "WHEN IS THE FUCKING GAME ON."

I'm supposed to have an even keel until the first pitch, remember?

But hey. All I have to do is survive until 7:00 then my favorite double-header EVER will begin.

Holy shit. I love today.

Game 5, and it was a 2-run dong to get the Sox within 1. Coco hit the tying hit after a 12-pitch AB or something like that.

Ah, finally, playoff baseball, and against the Angels no less. What more can you ask for? It's gonna be fun!

it wasn't don on extra bases. it was either mentioned during a broadcast, or one of the beat writers mentioned it on extra bases in one of those fluff posts about life on the road.

i've never been to canyon creek, but i've heard good things.

went to the keg last week on a gift card and it was bruuuuuutal. food was decent, but the atmosphere/service...oy. long story about that, it was a few laughs for us at how ridiculous the night went. e.g. "american idiot" by green day being blasted on the restaurant's music system along with all these other random, shouldn't be in a restaurant songs.

redsock said...

franklin had 38 saves.

A Conformer said...

Oh, and about Dodger stadium: one of the managers at the park I worked in in Orange County offered me to use her husband's season tickets, on the 13th row from the field towards 1st base. But the only days they were not being used, were those I had time off in, and I took advantage of them to go to Northern Arizona for 3 days. Great trip, and definitely worth it, but I can't help to feel a tiny bit of regret.

redsock said...

clank! ooof!

A Conformer said...

Yeah, Franklin, right. It just seemed odd, that he didn't start the inning with him. Even though the lefty-lefty thing makes sense, plus it worked out.

Holliday not looking like a good left-fielder there.

redsock said...

HBM?

L-girl said...

Right, they were talking about "oooo, the keeeeggg..." like it was Harbour 60 or some really exclusive place. Very amusing.

Canyon Creek was surprisingly (to me) good. Bacon-wrapped scallops... mmmm...

Ish said...

Ryan Franklin is their closer, but LaRussa wanted to go for matchups first.

Once Holliday dropped that ball, I thought: if they lose this game, I wouldn't wanna be him.

MLB announces the Red Sox Game 3 and 4 times...

3: Noon
4: 8:30

redsock said...

idiot on sportsnet says holliday's muff "kept the series alive, kept the dodgers' season alive"

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

then he keeps going and says that the dodgers lead the series 2-0. so how would their season have been over if the ball was caught?

175 comments prior to game - I like it. I just finished all my work, so I get to listen to the first inning in the car. Maybe catch you later in the game - right now, dinner while Sox!

Here we goooooo!

And here I go. Game recording. Hockey time. See you all soon!

redsock said...

i have usually taped the playoff games on VHS tape (yes, i am old-fashioned), but am not this time. part of the reason is we cannot set the timer anymore. still, seems weird. i'd like copies of all the games.

A Conformer said...

Bourbon is poured. Let's do this.

L-girl said...

Maybe someone who is DVRing it can give you a link to upload.

redsock said...

I have footage of Lackey in 2 hours.

A Conformer said...

LBJ will either bunt for a hit or hit a dong.

Ish said...

Just two hours?

redsock said...

20 minutes?

A Conformer said...

Saying that "both teams can run" is an overstatement. LBJ and FY, kinda. Who else?

redsock said...

Post-season Red Sox baseball! Should be fun.

Kevin said...

Who else?

Bay has 13, but that's about it.

Back when he was with the Phillies.

A Conformer said...

when the fuck did abreu win a GG?

Did he ever play a season in a stadium with no walls?

s1c said...

Bay has also been able to swipe bases and drew is considered one of the best 1st to 3rd in the game
