Angels - 000 101 023 - 7 11 0Jonathan Papelbon allowed two inherited runners to score in the eighth and then, needing only one more strike for the save, allowed three runs of his own.
Red Sox - 003 200 010 - 6 7 1
And the Angels move on to the ALCS.

Two quick thoughts: Walking Hunter intentionally was dumb. Should Tito have pulled Bot after Abreu's double made it 6-5? Bot had allowed three straight hits and four hits to his six batters. When did Jeemer get up and was anyone else up with him?
Note: I'm not blaming Francona (not much, anyway). Papelbon tried to get the third out against five hitters and failed.Scott Kazmir (4.89, 93 ERA) / Clay Buchholz (4.21, 112 ERA+)
Terry Francona:
What's happened has happened. Now we'll show up tomorrow, do what we always do on early games -- have 12 pieces of bacon, a Red Bull and go get 'em.Since 2003, the Red Sox are 13-3 in potential elimination games:
Since the ALDS began in 1995, 17 teams have trailed 0-2. Four of them came back to win the series (23.5%). Here's the list:
1995 - Sea 0-2 to NYY - Won 3-4-5Interesting: An AL team has never gone L-L-W-W-L in an ALDS.One possible reason for Clay Buchholz's poor performance in his last two starts (13 runs in eight innings against Toronto and Cleveland) is that his body is tired from throwing more innings this season than in any other.

God I'm going to need to acquire some Vodka if we lose this.
I really hope we get a new closer.
I cannot believe it. 1 strike away from winning THREE TIMES.
fuckin' masterbating hillbilly. go put a beer box on yr head and eff off.
I will speak for everyone.
Fuentes warming.
package bot in a trade -- use bard
God, I HATE being right about this.
youve got to be fucking shitting me.
Daniel Bard is the closer of our future. Bot is the Brad Lidge of the Red Sox.
Was the Fenway crowd booing Papelbon? If so, that is atrocious.
That's not so hard now is it?
SEE? HOW FUCKING DIFFICULT WAS THAT
fans are there
chanting let's go red sox.
Was that so fucking hard, Pap? Get a guy to pop up?
Jesus.
FY hits a walk off here.
Fuck this shit

Well it is time for this offense to step the fuck up and be the Red Fucking Sox that we all know they are.
Are you people insane?
He finally gives up runs in the Post Season and it is time to trade him?
Was the Fenway crowd booing Papelbon? If so, that is atrocious.
Can you blame them?
I blame me.
It's too bad when you're sitting there at 6-5 wondering who would be better in this situation, be able to think of two guys (Bard and Wagner) and realize they already pitched.
And you're thinking this about your closer.
But then, on the other side of it, you go with matchups. Vlad was 2 for 12 but a fastball down the middle is a shitty way to pitch him. How could you assume he was going to take the first pitch? No, you throw a slider off the outside so he fouls it off. Or you jam him inside. Anything OTHER than right down the chute.
been thinking they might trade bot this winter for awhile. hopefully, he didn't hurt his value too much.
and he has now allowed a post-season run.
actually THREE RUNS!
Jedi PHing for Seabass
I don't say trade him, he's clearly not Brad Lidge yet, but we definitely are not locking him up long term
3 outs from a sweep -- that sounds familiar
let's do this
Yeh I agree I think we will all need some vodka or tequila if they lose. Lets hope we don't though
Yes in the post season perfection is all that is required to stay on the team as a closer you have no other options. If you want option then be a fucking starter. Let someone more capable come in to close out your games.
remember 2004 sox
Tough strike zone for this situation too
actually THREE RUNS!
Actually 5 runs. He came in leading by 3, got an insurance run, and still gave up the lead. That's an awful, awful performance.
I fucking hate this pitcher too.
nathan blew it the other night for the twinnies and you dont hear their fans crying for a trade. have some faith lets walk it off here
How about a Lyndon walk-off inside the parker?
Yeah this game is on bot now. I am sorry but ofer is right there was a huge 5 run swing from the moment he stepped on the mound.
Manny?
How about a Lyndon walk-off inside the parker?
i like the cut of your jib.
s1C, he has been touch and go in too many games for me. I think the real story behind his saves is hidden by the number. In so many of those games, he gave up home runs and long balls in general, walked lots of players, gave up lots of hits. He just rarely got OTT or even close in the 9th.
This is just the cherry on top of a shitty season for the closer.
what's a jib? :D
The door is open- a sign! Rally time!
What the fuck are you doing just hit it to center.
Stat hunt! How many games did bot come in with 3 runs up.

did no good.
Well, that's fucking great
down with a wimper, Fragging kidding me
The 2009 season's water comes up clean.
Fail.
That was an unbelievably lame way to lose a game, series, and end the season.
Unbelievable. So sad, but the Angels sure did outplay us.
Ok let's start the speculation now. Who will we pick up to play either 1B or 3B and will bot make it to next year?
Go Phillies
I hope we do not see Papelbon again in a Red Sox uniform.
I really don't know what you can say after a loss like this.
So long, guys.
The fail train has arrived. Bot has first class tickets.
Go Twins. Go Dodgers. Go Rockies.
I want this team to spend out its asshole this offseason

ok. that made me crack a smile.
And non-tender Varitek right fucking now
see ya next year JOS
I could use a pull or two offa that bottle of JD right now.
Go Twins.
Facebook status: "Kevin would like to tell Jonathan Papelbon to go fuck himself."
Stat hunt! How many games did bot come in with 3 runs up
Go here -- next to last column on the right shows when he entered the game (d3 = down by 3; a2 = ahead by 2, etc.).
Walking Hunter was dumb.
I wonder if Tito should have pulled Bot for Jeemer (was anyone else up?) after Abreu's double made it 6-5. Bot had nothing and had allowed three hits in a row and four hits to his six batters.
I still thought it was a stupid ass pitch to throw right down the middle to a free-swinging Guerrero.
But whatever.
It feels colder outside.
That's exactly why we have Saito, a backup closer in case Pap doesn't have it on a particular day.
Like today.
This is not Tito's fault. This is only Papelbon's fault.
I sure am not going to waste one moment of my winter wondering what if. Papelbon blew it. That is all.
I'm with L. The bats woke up for once, even if they couldn't do anything in the 9th inning. The mini-swoon was over but it just so happened that Papelbon can't hold down the lead and completely melts down, and that's the price you pay for having an offensive slumber party in Games 1 and 2.
No margin for error and in the 8th and 9th there was a LOT of error.
Strange things happen in a short series, and the bottom line is it doesn't matter how you got to the postseason and how well you did for 162 games - a 3-game losing streak ends your season.
With Aybar walking to the plate, we had a 98.8% chance of winning.
(Even after Figgins's walk, it was 92.5%.)
Well, those assholes earned it, that's for sure.
They did earn it. We played a good season, won 95 games, and lost. What can we do but accept it and raise a glass to the 2009 Sox. They did good.
