Spiders - 000 000 000 - 0 3 0Lester (6.1-2-0-1-7, 84) seems fine! Look out, Angels.
Red Sox - 102 000 00x - 3 12 0
PitchesJacoby Ellsbury got the first of his three singles in the first and promptly stole second (#68). He took third on a force play and scored on Kevin Youkilis's sac fly to right.
1: F7 F7 F9 10
2: F9 F9 P4 11
3: K 63 P9 14
4: 1B K 543 7
5: K K K 15
6: 31 2B K K 20
7: 63 BB 7
In the third, Victor Martinez doubled with one out. Yook singled him to third and David Ortiz's single brought him home. Jason Bay's single scored Yook.
After Lester left, Daniel Bard loaded the bases on a double and a HBP, but got a 6-4-3 double play to wiggle out of trouble. Billy Wagner needed only eight pitches (all strikes) in the eighth (F7, K, 6-3) and Jonathan Papelbon got a OTT ninth on 11 pitches (K, K, 5-3).Carlos Carrasco (9.00, 51 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.52, 134 ERA+)
Carrasco, a 22-year-old righty, made his major league debut on September 1. This will be his fifth start. In 19 innings, he has allowed 31 hits and 10 walks -- that's a 2.158 WHIP -- while striking out 10.
Lester is back on the hill after taking a line drive off the side of his right knee against the Yankees last Friday. However, he wasn't pitching well that night before his early exit; this will be a tune-up before his ALDS start.
Victor Martinez, who was in the Cleveland organization for 13 years, is excited to face his former team. In 52 games since the trade, Martinez has hit .332. He has also hit safely in 27 of his past 28 games, batting .350 (36-for-103).

I'm excited to be going to this game. It's my first Sox game in 10 years! Although the game is meaningless, I'm hoping I see players other than Kotchman and Gaithwright (not that there's anything wrong with them).
Extra Bases:
[Don Orsillo] will call a yet-to-be-announced League Division Series for TBS, joined by former ML catcher Buck Martinez. ... It is uncertain who will call the Red Sox-Angels series, but the candidates are -- Dick Stockton and Bob Brenly, Orsillo and Martinez, Milwaukee Brewers play-by-play man Brian Anderson and Joe Simpson or Chip Caray and Ron Darling.

Can I pick Orsillo/Darling?
You should see a more normal lineup tonight. (I thought you were going last night.) Have fun!
Looks like:
Ellsbury, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Bay, LF
Lowell, 3B
Gathright, RF
Gonzalez, SS
That is a normal lineup - great! Had other plans last night - glad it worked out this way.
For some reason i think there is a tryout going on between Reddick and Gathright, for a postseason roster spot.....
TV TONIGHT!!!!!
See you all in the 4th or so. Ball hockey until 8.
Have a good game everyone! I'm watching the Bruins. Red Sox on the little TV. Opening night! I'm excited.
Hey - I got Clay Buchholz's BRef page! They better not trade him now!
Win it for the Crossword Puzzle Guy!
And go Bruins, I suppose. Ehh, why not?
NESN!
don's eyes are so blue.
OMG - did tito just call the clev mgr "wedgie"?
Alright, as amusing as it is to have a catcher on the mound, I'm kinda getting tired of this losing bullshit.
Win.
ALDS: Brown over MDC?
"ALDS: Brown over MDC?"
Sadly, that's a tough decision to make.
10-pitch OTT!!
68!
Lyndon would be at 100 steals if he got a chance to steal off of the Cactus.
We're already way ahead of our recent pace.

This is true.
The Angels are fielding a lineup of almost all scrubs comparable to ours last night.
i rejected a funny comment today on the torii hunter post. (if it had been on a more recent post, i would have put it through for laffs, but it's a bit down the page now.)
"too bad the red sox are the worst team ever"
Big Torii fan, I guess!

Actually, I didn't see that several starters came out after a couple of at-bats.
I wonder how many times a pitcher has had an RBI walk twice in one game as Aaron Cook did today at Coors Field.
2 OTTs!!!
someone at sosh wondered (re dusty brown) when the last position player registered a strikeout as a pitcher before he got his first MLB hit.
lester - 6 up, 6 down, 21 pitches
Wow, that was some catch.
Awesome night for baseball. Subway was packed with Bruins fans - must be opening night.
Hey, Westcoastsox! Glad you are at this game, not that awful one last night. That game was so pathetic from the start that I admit---I turned it off. (Go ahead, call me a bad fan, blah, blah, blah.)
I only saw part of the replay. looks like he did check his swing.
OTT
Lester seems fine.
(Go ahead, call me a bad fan, blah, blah, blah.)
Turn in your Red Sox Nation (TM) Membership Card. Now.
i'd be afraid to eat a "youk burrito".
Lester seems not only fine, but better than the other night. Maybe it's all for the best that he got out of that game as early as he did.
VMart is quite something. I sure am glad we traded for him. I can't even remember who we gave up for him.
Masterson +.
(I'm very happy with the deal.)
Masterson who pitched a CG yesterday with 12 K!
TIZ
That was close, Youk!
Oh, yeah, Masterson. Hmm. Guess we could have used another reliable starter, given the latest performances of some of our starters, but still, a good trade.
Bay, Bay, Bay...
Hey Amy, I have great news: dogwalker changed her mind, she is staying in Toronto. Whoo-hoo! She says it's her final answer.
Don't worry Amy, my nana'll make the 40-man roster! It's either MDC or her and she should be rehabbed from her shoulder surgery soon enough!
Really? That's terrific!! Did you make her an offer she couldn't refuse? :)
I hope she sticks to it. I know how much peace of mind is at stake for you all.
I liked Masterson, but the we NEEDED to make that deal.
Too bad we didn't sell high on Delcarmen...
OK, Nick, I would take your Nana, shoulder surgery and all, over some of our recent pitching performances. Sigh. I have no concerns about our bats, but the pitching is giving me pause. Let's hope those Angels pull their usual post-season collapse.
Nick's Nana for the ALDS! Can't wait.
I always liked Victor Martinez. I was thrilled we got him.
Ortiz's wife is impressive---good spokesperson. Maybe she'd be a good announcer.

lol. I thought you were talking to me at first.
congrats on the dog walker L&A.
Wow, that was quick.
You thought I was talking about your grandmother pitching? That is too funny.
(I did make a comment about that also. See above.)
Thanks Amy. She felt really funny telling me she changed her mind and asking if it was ok to keep her job. WHEW. What a relief.
you don't get a v-mart for free. we dealt the big donkey from a surplus.
WCS's seat location:
"3rd base loge - 25 rows from field, got for well under face value. You have to love meaningless games."
Thanks Nick. :)
I'm sure if someone makes your grandma an offer she can't refuse, she'll walk the dogs after she finishes pitching in the ALDS.
Ouch.
This baseball thing can be quite dangerous.
Lester redux.
wasn't the knee, though. look at how he hopped up favoring the left leg and then limping off it's obvious.
that was poorly worded on my part. What I mean is that he might've twisted his ankle or such while trying to avoid that ball.
dog-walking, strike-dealing raging grannies!
It wasn't Lester's knee either. Despite what Dr Eckersley, the Ph.D in physics, diagnosed.
That ball was going 95 mph when it hit Carrasco's leg. It made a loud sound. Hope he's ok.
"dedication to giving back to the community." fuck 'em and their scaggy ticket-scalping ways.
c'mon yook
long wait for lester ...
typical red sox.
bah (but not an anxiety-ridden bah, more of a bummer that could've been so much better sort of bah).
"dedication to giving back to the community." fuck 'em and their scaggy ticket-scalping ways.
We said similar words during their commercial disguised as a donation.
I love that Westcoast is threading from Fenway.
tex up on laa 9-3.
hahahahahahhh.
westcoastsox doing some real gameblogging. cool and sweet and just a bit dorky (in a totally ok sort of way).
SID - KKK
I'd say Lester is ready. Faced the minimum through 5. Can't thread too much more - Blackberry is wicked slow!
Sit, sit, and sit
Look out, Angels.
Dorky as charged!
literally booted that one.
lester at only 57 thru 5!
Yo JoS!
This TV = Best purchase ever.
BEAUTIFUL! Except the colours are too heavy. I can't even see Gathright. He blends in to the ad behind him. Time to fix that.
What is your TV, Tim? Did I ask you that already?
i think it's big.
KKKKKKK
Just a baby Amy...40 incher, its all about the 120hz though.
Mine isn't much bigger (42 inches), but a Panasonic plasma. Love it!
K pls
now - dp pls
Yeah I would've went with plasma but I read they're bad if you have a lot of light in the room. Since we have 10 foot windows, I decided to go the LCD route. I was at a place with a 42 or 46" panasonic plasma last summer, Steph's friend's place. Also watched ALDS 2 there last year, I love that TV too!
rank roo!!!!!!!
Thanks for telling them to do that, Allan.
Otherwise who knows what kind of trouble we'd find ourselves in!
Very convenient double play there.
wcs wants a flo dong.
Tim, FWIW, we have had no glare issues with the plasma. And we have recessed lights in the ceiling.
I feel like when there's a flo dong I want to scream out "FLOMAX"
uh-oh tim, maybe you don't want to come over for a playoff game at our house. just a puny little low-def tv here. :)
I'm not into big TVs but 10 foot windows sound really nice!
good inning from waggy.
L, its the company not the TV :)
And Amy, I don't think its re: the glare - its the fact that you can't really see the screen, sort of like when you use a laptop outside.
I have no idea though, its all hearsay.
Well I didn't want to say anything but the real reason I bought the TV is to crunch numbers on those big spreadsheets for my accounting classes.....
riiiiiight.
Tim, I agree
Tim, we don't watch much TV during the day so daylight is not an issue, but even when the guy installed the TV during the day, there was no glare. Maybe we are just lucky.
time to snuff.
Snuff stuff.
NESN showing a snuff film.
Allan wins!
c c K
The water is Muddy!!!
WATER
Dirty water. Clean ice.
Boston sports split.
Goodnight.
Doy-ty.
Sweet Caroline, Dropkick Murphys, and Dirty Water - what a great game! If the Sox look like this in the ALDS, then hello Yankees. Of course, they need to work on getting rid of all the LOB, but Drew for Gaithright will help that cause.
IMAC -
Nice job by Lester. Glad to see ONE person seems to be in true peak form at the right time. Hopefully the rest will fall in line behind him.
Cool that WCS was able to thread from the game. Son Taylor was at Candlestick Tuesday and sent about a pic per half inning from his phone. It's a beautiful park.
I'm really missing threading during games lately, but the things that have been peventing that have been good things as well.
Thinking about the various things on my plate this weekend, it will undoubtedly be playoffs before I actually get to participate in a game.
Looking forward to it.
Candlestick? That's quite a trick. The park in SF wasn't renamed - it's a different place.
WhateverTF they're calling that park now, it is beautiful, one of my faves.
That's at the top of my list of parks to visit. SF and Seattle. Maybe do a west coast trip and see those two.
Oakland......not so much.
