G112: Yankees 7, Red Sox 2

Red Sox - 000 010 100 - 2 7 2
Yankees - 020 050 00x - 7 12 1
It would likely have been better if Beckett (4.2-11-7-2-6, 105) had been the starter who was unable to pitch, and not Burnett. Beckett struggled in the second inning -- four hits, two runs, 29 pitches -- and was left out on the mound for eight batters and 30 pitches in the fifth inning; five of the first six Yankees reached base against him and all five scored.

Boston could do very little with Moseley (6.1-6-2-2-5, 87). Bill Hall hit his 13th home run in the fifth (he also singled twice). Mike Lowell had a pinch-hit RBI single off Joba Chamberlain in the seventh. Later in that inning, Boone Logan retired David Ortiz on a two-out, bases-loaded grounder to end the threat.

Tim Wakefield pitched three innings of relief, facing ten batters, striking out three, and allowing only a single.

For the second day in a row, the Red Sox could have gained ground on both the Yankees and the Rays, but did not. Two weekend wins would have put Boston a mere 3 GB New York. Instead, they are 7 GB.

The Blue Jays beat the Rays 1-0 (and swept the three-game series), as Brandon Morrow (9-1-0-2-17, 137) came within one out of pitching the sixth no-hitter of 2010. It also would have been the third time Tampa Bay had been no-hit in the last three months. The Rays have lost their last five games.
Example
Josh Beckett / A.J. Burnett Dustin Moseley
Ellsbury, CF
Scutaro, SS
Ortiz, DH
Martinez, 1B
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Kalish, LF
Hall, 2B
Cash, C
It's a match-up of former Marlins teammates. Since pitching together in Florida from 2001-05, they have faced each other four times: April 21, 2006, when Burnett was with the Blue Jays, and three times last year: April 25 (Boston 16-11), June 9 (Boston 7-0), and August 7 (New York 2-0 (15)).

In three starts since coming off the disabled list, Beckett has a 2.18 ERA over 20.2 innings, allowing 13 hits and four walks.

David Ortiz is 10-for-39 against Burnett, but among those 10 hits are five doubles and three dongs. Adrian Beltre also enjoys slugging against Cletus: 10-for-31, with six doubles and a home run. (On the other side, Robinson Cano destroys Beckett.)

At 1 PM: Rays/Blue Jays
Example
August 8:

1877 - After St. Louis catcher John Clapp has his cheek smashed by a foul tip‚ back-up Mike Dorgan takes over, wearing a mask. This may be the first time a catcher's mask was used in an official NL game.

1920 - The Tigers beat the Yankees 1-0 in 1:13, the shortest game by time in AL history.

1966 - The Red Sox-Cleveland game at Fenway Park is stopped four times because of fog. Boston wins 3-1.

I was following that game a bit and did not realize what was going on. And with 16 K's no less.

Wait, different fog delay! From 1986, I think.

Blacked out, so I have Jays radio on.

Bartlett (sc) flied to CF

Zobrist (bbb) BB

[earlier he flew out to deep cf, and wells make a leaping catch, crahsed to the dirt and left the game with a dislocated finger]

Longoria (bf) HIT?

9casey said...

you would have to assume Cano would receive a little chin music tonight

allan said...

oh wow - lost it with one out to go.

still 1-0 game, now rays have tying run on 3rd, and morrow at 129 pitches. cito out, but leaves him in.

hill dove to his left. sounds like he just couldn't get to it.

allan said...

very questionable call by cito - radio noting dejected look on morrow's face at the hit.

I went and watched the last inning of that game. The Longoria hit was one of those things where the second baseman is running to his left and out into left field for it. It did go off his glove, but no question it was a hit.

Glad they hung on to win.

Zenslinger said...

Carlos Gonzalez of Colorado is a 3B short of the cycle again. He did it recently, but has also been close a lot.

Rob said...

I think 17 strikeouts in a complete game is more impressive this year than a pokey no-hitter. Although nothing tops the perfect game.

A.J. Scratched

Rob said...

Oh snap!

Rob said...

I wonder who they'll have pitch now. Gaudin?

allan said...

Yep.

Abraham (4:58 PM): "A.J. Burnett has been scratched by the Yankees and replaced by Dustin Moseley, the scheduled starter for tomorrow. No word why as of yet."

Jeter, SS
Swisher, RF
Teixeira, 1B
Rodriguez, 3B
Cano, 2B
Posada, C
Berkman, DH
Granderson, CF
Gardner, LF

Dustin Moseley.

Rob said...

Maybe he punched another wall.

Rob said...

Bad back, according to Ian Browne.

allan said...

Maybe he was too afraid of riding in the uppity box to the clubhouse.

Zenslinger said...

But Moseley was supposed to go tomorrow, wasn't he? Hm...Mitre? Hope springs eternal, especially with TB losin'.

Rob said...

Hughes will pitch tomorrow.

allan said...

UPDATE: "Burnett had back spasms yesterday and will not pitch until Tuesday. Phil Hughes will face the Sox tomorrow."

allan said...

Also, Brandon Morrow threw almost 100 strikes in his CG (97)!

A quick search at BRef tells me that the last pitchers to throw 100+ strikes in a game were:

Randy Johnson, July 31, 2002: 102 (149 total)

Livan Hernandez, June 25, 1998: 100 (152 total)

Randy Johnson, July 18, 1997: 106 (155 total)

(Fat Billy did in twice in 1996.)

allan said...

Among games for which BRef has pitch counts, the most strikes thrown is 128, by Herm Wehmeier (May 2, 1957; 12 IP, 203 total pitches) and Sandy Koufax (September 20, 1961; 13 IP, 205 total pitches).

watching the pre-game show on mute -- and i am feeling a bit of amy's hate for jon miller. he bobs around like a moron. even on mute you can tell he is sucking up to morgan's stupidity ... couple that with joe's hearty embrace of ignorance and orel's wrinkled brow and squinty eyes ...

If he wasn't such a pretty-boy, he would have broken a few ribs on that dive, just for fun.

allan said...

way to go, gdgd.

foul foul called strike on cano? inning over?

NO! no called strike at all.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Not sure how much longer I can hold oout before muting the TV and putting the radio on.

If there wasn't such a huge delay, I wouldn't even try to hold out.

RedSoxDiehard said...

hold oout

Oops, must be the Canadian spelling. You guys are rubbing off on me!

allan said...

i don't even try to listen anymore.

if there is a brawl or something crazy happens, i suppose i will un-mute.

allan said...

ha - i thought that was deliberate.

RedSoxDiehard said...

I don't like this at all. I was really looking forward to facing Burnett.

allan said...

why can't swisher get hit by a bus?

allan said...

is lord up? did he see that? he may be plotting a homicide trip to nyc as we speak.

laura k said...

I thought the spelling was on purpose too :)

allan said...

stfu gardner.

Rob said...

I wish Blackberry had a good Blogger app FUCK that sucked... So I don't have to use the web. Too lazy to get my netbook.

Still, an app would be awesome.

Rob said...

What even is this??!

RedSoxDiehard said...

OK, muted. That didn't take long.

Hello, Joe and Dave...

It's funny because it's (probably) true.

looks like we're gonna see a perfect game tonight!

allan said...

HA!

allan said...

why did teix throw the ball? a DP was 1.5 steps away.

Rob said...

Kind of an odd double play. Guess he thought it could have been a line drive catch.

Rob said...

Fucked up swinging bunt thingy...

Rob said...

Okay, so maybe gamethreading on my Blackberry isn't quite so bad.

Rob said...

I hate that damn whistle noise they play whenever one of our guys strikes out.

tie it up, jd

CLANK A DONGEREENO, BELTRE.

That is all for now.

Jake of All Trades said...

Thanks for the spoiler, Miller.

tito: he's a pain in the ass.

tim said...

"pipsqueak can't play crib for shit"

Rob said...

Tim, ask her if she knows when BB6 will be out for the 9650.

You opened up a miniscule can of words by telling me she works for RIM. Lol

tim said...

aug 12

tim said...

maybe its only on the torch on aug 12. i'll get off my ask and ask her after this swisher K.

Zenslinger said...

I don't suppose anyone has already wondered why Moseley is shutting us down.

Rob said...

The press release answer is "in the coming months" but I was just curious if she knew the real answer.

Amy said...

Hi, all. Here for a bit. Had a wonderful dinner at a new restaurant tonight in Wellfleet. Heading back to western MA tomorrow and then to Brooklyn to see the baby and his parents. So got to pack, etc. Can we please score some runs?

allan said...

jesus fuck.

i think ellsbury's troubles started when he took #2. switch back!

Amy said...

Damn....

Rob said...

Fuck you, Mrs. Teixiera.

allan said...

Amy said...

At least I missed seeing Jeter pass the Babe in hits.

Rob said...

That was a weird pitch that hit Cano.

allan said...

sox pen is stirring

Amy said...

OK, I am not enjoying this at all. Sigh.

allan said...

tim said...

josh is cooked. fuck sakes tito, get him out of there. doubront plz.

allan said...

tito tying his shoes!

gettin' ready for a stroll?

tim said...

RUFKM?!

Amy said...

Yeah, that makes sense. Leave him in to build up his stamina.

OK, I'd rather pack than watch this game.

Oy.

Rob said...

Or maybe the real answer is BB6 will be out for the other 6-compatible phones on Aug 12, too! That would be awesome. Thank you both.

Rob said...

Although I'm not holding out much hope on that. Something to look for on Thursday, I guess.

This fucking game... Fuck.

tim said...

YAYYYYYYYY

LEAVE HIM IN FOR ANOTHER 20 PITCHES, TITO!

allan said...

hey! 'sup, tito?

allan said...

maybe tito thought it was the top of the 5th and he wanted to have beckett go 5, so if we rallied and took the lead, he could get him a W.

tim said...

pretty sad that the upcoming series in toronto will actually have implications on the standings.

meunier said...

Why can't Beckett pitch against the Yankees?

tim said...

Ah well, 6 run comebacks are even better to watch than boring old 2 run ones.

allan said...

JB: 4.2-11-7-2-6, 105

tim said...

seeing 8 hits after 4 innings (or was it 3?) i felt like the house of josh had smoke billowing out of it, and was about to burn down.

yup.

i'm surprised v-mart didn't break his thumb on that putout diving for the ball as another run crossed the plate, the way this season's gone.

allan said...

Why can't Beckett pitch against the Yankees?

He can (see June 9 and August 7 of last year), but not always (tonight, among others).

allan said...

"long wait for moseley"?

nick said...

Hey all. Haven't been around much (in case you didn't notice). Watching this game on the big screen at a movie theater in Pittsfield. Pretty cool except for the lack of a mute button and the inclusion of this sucky game.

tim said...

wooooo

Rob said...

A-Rod goes from writhing in pain yesterday to stealing a base tonight... draw your own conclusions.

allan said...

run(s) would be welcome here.

Rob said...

At least our crappy lineup means we have a pretty good bench.

allan said...

tim: how are you watching this game? L says it is not on the usual espn station. "brian's song" is on!

allan said...

it's a start!

allan said...

let's do this, flo.

tim said...

its on tsn2

allan said...

what channel is that? is your # the same as ours?

Rob said...

I will accept the grandest of dongs right here.

tim said...

i would assume so for these channels.

try 98

tim said...

fuck.

Rob said...

Our clutch is broken. :(

tim said...

I'd be content with an OTT here, then seeing Victor hit twice in the next inning.

tim said...

Fuckin' MFY. Pulling a fast one and starting Moseley.

I say Tito does the same. Start Casey Kelly tomorrow!

allan said...

turns out it would have been better if beckett was scratched and not burnett.

tim said...

fuck you, berkman. foul one off of girardi's face now pls.

tim said...

this guy should've started! mowing down yanks all night.

tim said...

Interesting.

tim said...

was that a bunt?

'the fuck?

allan said...

no, just a weak dribbler.

allan said...

fruitbat? seriously?

Rob said...

Wow. Girardi going with Fruitbat here. The man is not fucking around. Maybe we scare him or something.

allan said...

more likely he is simply an idiot.

tim said...

go for the half-and-half water tmrw i guess.

Rob said...

Trying to read into the mind of an idiot is difficult.

SoSock said...
