G113: Red Sox 2, Yankees 1

Red Sox - 020 000 000 - 2 6 0
Yankees - 000 000 010 - 1 6 1
Boston got two runs and five hits in its first time through the lineup, then watched as Lester (6-4-0-3-6, 99), Daniel Bard (1.1-2-1-1-2, 38), and Jonathan Papelbon (1.1-0-0-1-3, 22) kept the Yankees at bay to split the four-game series.

Ryan Kalish singled with one out in the second. He stole second, went to third on Dumbo's throwing error, and scored on Bill Hall's single. Jacoby Ellsbury singled and Hall took third. Ellsbury stole second and Marco Scutaro walked. J.D. Drew grounded to second to bring in the second run.

In the seventh, Ellsbury was hit in the shin with a pitch. He quickly stole second and, after Drew walked, they pulled off a double steal. But Victor Martinez, who had the Sox's lone hit after the second inning, struck out to end the rally.

Lester did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, although he walked three batters up to that point. In the bottom of the seventh, after the Sox missed an opportunity to pad their lead, Jorge Posada singled, Marcus Thames doubled off the top of the wall in right-center -- missing a game-tying home run by an inch or two -- and Austin Kearns was plunked in the back leg. Bases loaded, no outs.

Lester struck out Curtis Granderson on four pitches (fsbs) and Terry Francona called on Bard. With the game on the line, Bard struck out both Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher on three pitches each.

Bard was tagged for a long home run to right by Mark Teixeira to start the eighth. Then Alex Rodriguez singled. In a long battle with Robinson Cano -- 6 pitches and 4 throws to first -- Bard got a grounder to second. Pinch-runner Brett Gardner took second. Bard walked Posada on four pitches. After Bard retired pinch-hitter Lance Berkman on a fly to shallow left, Tito went to Papelbon.

Bot needed only one pitch to escape the jam, getting Kearns to ground out to second.

In the ninth, after striking out Granderson, Papelbon walked Jeter, who then stole second. It did not matter, as Swisher and Teixeria both struck out.

The ball-strike accuracy of home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt was abysmal all afternoon. At times, more accurate calls might have been made by flipping a coin.

So Boston is back with 6 GB New York in the East with four more days whittled off the calendar. There are 49 games left to play. ... The Rays beat the Tigers 6-3.

Jon Lester / Phil Hughes
Scutaro, SS
Drew, RF
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowell, 1B
Kalish, LF
Hall, 2B
Ellsbury, CF
Lester is a bit of a funk, with a 4.39 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break. He was bothered by a cramp in his left hamstring in his last start -- five innings against Cleveland on Wednesday -- but he says he is fine. He was dehydrated during the game, and his wife had given birth several days before.

Notes: Carlos Delgado worked out in Pawtucket on Sunday. He might DH today. ... Dustin Pedroia is pushing to be back in the lineup on August 17, his 27th birthday. ... Jason Varitek took BP on the field for the first time since he fractured his right foot. ... Kevin Youkilis may rejoin the team as a cheerleader in Texas next weekend.

Tonight: Rays/Tigers
Example
August 9:

1942 - The Cubs beat the Reds 10-8 in 18 innings in the first game of a double header in Cincinnati.

Reds - 000 000 004 202 000 000 - 8 20 0
1946 - For the first time in major-league history, all AL and NL games are played at night.

1967 - Burlington (Carolina League, A) plays a seven-inning game against Raleigh and hits into a double play in each inning.

1988 - The Cubs play their first-ever night game at Wrigley Field, beating the Mets 6-4.

Rogers is showing the YES feed on at least 5 different channels!!!!

gggrrrrrrrrrrrrr

laura k said...

Geez, YES on every channel! I think A is calling Rogers now. I've got WEEI on MLB Audio.

laura k said...

You know what I love? I love when strangers who insult me tell me what I can and cannot post on my own blog. Don't you?

allan said...

Rogers guy telling me that Rogers does not chose (and has no control over) what gets shown on its Sportsnet channels.

I told him that makes no sense. He is off finding info (or is ignoring me and went on lunch break).

allan said...

troll comment i zapped:

"YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO POST ANY NEGATIVITY ABOUT THE NEW YORK YANKEES"

hahahahahaahhha

laura k said...

Rogers has no control over what they show and if you believe that I get rid of this call.

Trolls, what a life. Bizarre and pathetic.

allan said...

i am calling another dept. now

Rob said...

It's really ugly for Baltimore. Heh.

allan said...

...and the birds have been hot lately.

Rob said...

That is FUNNY. "It's my world! There is only one team! The Yankees ARE baseball! Nothing else exists! Everyone is inferior. Long live George!"

"Strange" is too light a word.

Rob said...

Lawls! The lawls!

Not all blogs welcome fans of other teams. If you want to go chum with Red Sox fans, I'd suggest Twitter.

Rob said...

Anyways, I really like this Kalish dude. I also very much like this Heidi Watney girl.

Zenslinger said...

For my part, I could easily tolerate a NYY fan on the blog if that person was reasonable.

laura k said...

1-0 us. Yay.

Sox radio guys noting how Alex has lost so much range, looking like a "future 1B," except 1st is tied up for a while.

Zenslinger said...

Heh. E-Posada.

And a run.

Hope Kalish can keep this up. OPS over .900 so far.

Zenslinger said...

Hate to say that's LBJ's first hit since he got back. But I'll take it.

laura k said...

I personally don't need fans of any other team on a gamethread, but no fan - including Red Sox fans - is welcome if they are rude and insulting.

What I don't get is why he still bothers. But I will never get that, ever.

Rob said...

One of the Bruins writers wrote, "Hanging with my 96-year old grandma watching Sox-Yankees and she says, 'I hate the damn Yankees!' Love the passion at that age!"

laura k said...

And one walk. And now one steal.

I think. I can't hear too well over A's conversation with Rogers.

Rob said...

Seems like some people just CAN'T move on quietly into the night. So weird.

Rob said...

Now two steals. Kalish stole a base and now LBJ has stolen a base.

allan said...

I could easily tolerate a NYY fan on the blog if that person was reasonable.

Me, too. And he was. ... Until he wasn't.

Rob said...

And somewhere like this, you become unreasonable, you're not going to be seen as reasonable again.

laura k said...

I always note how the Sox have all these old-lady fans. Sox announcers are always wishing happy birthdays to women in their 90s who watch every game. It's so cool. I hope one day I'll be one of them!

allan said...

41 up in mfy pen

Zenslinger said...

C'mon now DJ.

laura k said...

Ish, exactly. Then when they cannot be seen as reasonable, they become all unreasonable again!

Zenslinger said...

No DP? That's cool. Now let's cash in at VMart.

allan said...

And naturally, since the banning, he has posted a ton of bigoted, homophobic, and otherwise offensive shit -- denying it even after I post screenshots. ... Plus he blames me for his actions.

laura k said...

My troll blames me for boring him with overly long posts!

Rob said...

There's a writer I know of who used to write for AskMen.com and is now a stay-at-home dad and still freelances. He has a blog that is all pictures of different baby-related things and they all have a post-it note attached to them with a funny message about the baby or parenting.

Today's said, "Used the strap-on w/the wife for the first time this weekend. That's what those front-of-the-chest baby carriers are called, right? Why are you giggling?"

Zenslinger said...

My troll blames me for boring him with overly long posts!

Now that is fucked up!

Hughes pitch count is 57-35.

Rob said...

Per everyone and their mother on Twitter: Jeremy Hermida has been outrighted to Pawtucket.

laura k said...

OMG Ish, that is hilarious!

Rob said...

Fuckface umpire is a fuckface. Another bad corner call.

laura k said...

[strap-on, not hermider]

allan said...

YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO POST ANY NEGATIVITY ABOUT THE NEW YORK YANKEES

Maybe this should be my new tagline.

Rob said...

I was confused at first as to why he'd be using a strap-on when he has the real thing.

Rob said...

Will it fit along the top banner?

laura k said...

But he said he used it "with" his wife. So...

I probably shouldn't be too graphic.

allan said...

maybe it should be so big it overshadows JoS.

Rob said...

It was enough to make the average person giggle, even if making the most sense it would say, "My wife used the strap-on with me for the first time..."

laura k said...

Well, you "through" it out there.

[It's ok to rag on trolls' spelling, right?]

[Or maybe I should ask his permission.]

Rob said...

Last night's game made me want to throah things.

allan said...

Fact: No reader is as loyal as a troll.

laura k said...

Last night's game made me want to throah things.

Me two.

allan said...

last night's game made me call my tv a "dumb fag".

Rob said...

DING! Your bell has been rung, Dumbo.

Rob said...

But I will always love our little sewing circle.

Zenslinger said...

Does Lester's string of three fielder's choice ground outs in a row excite any stat heads?

Rob said...

Looks like Mike Lowell stole some of Remy's Just For Men.

allan said...

3 FC

not me.

laura k said...

I was noticing that Mike's beard is suddenly black.

allan said...

though i suppose that all batters in the inning reached base is interesting.

laura k said...

Hey, what do you guys think? Does "you fucking moron" qualify as civil and reasonable?

And is calling someone a fag - not as a compliment! - homophobic?

allan said...

Here you go, you lying piece of shit.

allan said...

"Man, that Michael Jordan is so phony."

allan said...

Here you go, you lying piece of shit.

Benjamin said...

Sounds like someone forgot to go to the beach for Victory Day.

Remember, Victory Day is not a day to express satisfaction in the destruction and death caused by nuclear bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Rob said...

Doesn't look like a "packed house" to me...

laura k said...

And remember, the only country in the world to use weapons of mass destruction is allowed to destroy any other country that it accuses of using them.

Off topic.

Not sorry.

Rob said...

Don Wakamatsu has been axed as manager of the M's...

allan said...

Last word re Troll:

If he would like more screenshots of his offensive comments, he should email me. I shall reply with several jpgs.

Benjamin said...

You know what sucks, though? Having to work on Victory Day. I mean, not as much as it sucks to have the bomb dropped on you and having your city vaporized, but it's up there.

At least we have afternoon baseball.

laura k said...

Last Monday we missed a holiday here. It's called "Civic Holiday". No kidding.

laura k said...

VMart half dong!

Benjamin said...

That's totally what they should rename Victory Day. If you're going to be one of two states in the country with an extra holiday in early August, just be honest and call it Extra Holiday in Early August Day, or "Civic Holiday" for short.

laura k said...

Wait... this is a holiday in some states? Is there really a holiday called Victory Day? I thought you were just being funny. Please explain?

laura k said...

Ontario Civic Holiday used to be Simcoe Day, for the guy who founded Ontario. I think. I will check.

Benjamin said...

Yes. It's a Rhode Island and Hawaii thing, and it's today.

allan said...

good thing the ump did not run flo for that foul off his head

laura k said...

OK, it's Civic Holiday all over Canada, but in some provinces it doubles as another day, too. In Ontario, it's Simcoe Day. According to Wiki:

John Graves Simcoe (February 25, 1752 – October 26, 1806) was the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791-1796.

Big whoop, I know.

Benjamin said...

Although I'm now having trouble finding where I read that it's celebrated in Hawaii too. Could just be a Rhode Island thing.

laura k said...

More than anyone here wants to know: Civic Holiday.

But hey, it's a palindrome!

laura k said...

There's the hit.

Benjamin said...

Let's not have too many of those. Those hits.

Lord Lynch said...

Chuckles.

Moaning about strikes right down the pipe.

God. I hate that man.

That is all.

Zenslinger said...

Lester rocks. ERA under 3 for the year now.

laura k said...

Yay another LBJ SB

Zenslinger said...

Ugh. It should be like 4-0.

laura k said...

Hang on a minute, it might be soon.

allan said...

tangible sasahe

laura k said...

2 down, it would be very cool to get out of this.

laura k said...

Beautiful! Lester + Shakespeare = sit down!

Lord Lynch said...

I am rather liking Daniel Bard right now.

laura k said...

Well, that was quick.

Benjamin said...

Could've made Joba throw more than two pitches that inning, imho.

laura k said...

I concur.

laura k said...

The radio announcers keep talking about Ted Williams' package.

laura k said...

Oh dear.

allan said...

Is Bard now on Amy's shit list?

I am getting frustrated, but I know that I ... HAVE NO RIGHT TO POST ANY NEGATIVITY ABOUT THE NEW YORK YANKEES

allan said...

JESUS - it's above his fucking knees

allan said...

is wendelstadt an NBA ref in the off-season?

laura k said...

OK. That's better.

Infield fly in the OF?

laura k said...

Oh here we go. Pap w/ a 1 run lead and 2 on. Hmm.

Lord Lynch said...

Are we not calling strikes any more? Is this a new variation I have missed?

allan said...

i just said that, lynch - wouldn't it be neat to have strikes called when your pitchers throw strikes?

what a fuckin concept.

they call out when you catch the ball on the fly, you are safe when you reach the bag first -- why not call actual strikes?

i think the game should think about that. it might be popular.

laura k said...

WHEW. Thanks Bot!

allan said...

that shit is snuffed.

Lord Lynch said...

Now Sox. Break the damn habit of a lifetime and blow this bloody game open and save the heartache.

Some of us are worried about our blood pressure and ulcers....

laura k said...

I mean really. Would it KILL us to score a few runs here?

allan said...

let's get some insurance off this flatbrimmed turdlicker.

Lord Lynch said...

Kalish Hall LBJ.

Looks like 2-1 folks....

allan said...

allan said...

the grandy man can't.

laura k said...

We were just talking about you. :)

Amy said...

No, I still love Bard. He was awesome in the 7th.

allan said...

2-1 wins are nightmares, now?

laura k said...

But really, would it have KILLED the Sox to score a few more runs, at any point in the game?

Amy said...

Nightmare scenario: Papelbon with a one run lead. Against the Yankees.

laura k said...

Bard allowed a HR and let 2 guys on base - then Pap bailed him out w/ one pitch.

allan said...

you missed bot bailing out bard last inning, i guess.

Lord Lynch said...

Nice Ball 1... Check Gameday

laura k said...

And yes, he was great in the 7th.

allan said...

about fuckin time that gets called,

Amy said...

I saw Bot throw the one pitch in the 8th.

laura k said...

DP pls

allan said...

oh come on, it's "papelbon versus anybody"! :>)

laura k said...

Ok, so no dp...

allan said...

that 1 pitch was all he needed.

Amy said...

decent split -- now on to skydome.

Zenslinger said...

Nicely dirty.

tim said...

Hooray for the dirty afternoon water. Missed most of the game but caught parts on the radio...ah well.

Currently watching Tigers/Rays. Tigers announcers are fucking brutal.

Runner on 2nd for TB, announcer says that the batter "has hit into 10 double plays...it'd be great if he hit into 11 right here"

I know its possible, but to me it sounded like he thought the runner was on first. I let this one go, and choose to ignore the blatant homerism.

Then, they proved they have no idea whats going on. Boesch homered for detroit to cut it to 4-3 TB, as they were going to commercial they announce that Boesch has "tied it up!"

There was some other blatantly moronic thing that was said, but I'm trying to blank it out of my mind before I become stupider.

Is it not a job prerequisite in Detroit to know what the fuck is going on during the game? As long as you can read the numbers that appears under the batters name, I guess thats all that matters.

/rant

tim said...

Christ, I don't know what's worse - the tigers announcing team or the baseball team.

Way to blow it, dickholes.

allan said...

Tigers guys are tres shitty. They veer far too close to Hawk territory.

Whenever the Tigers got a lead against the Sox, they would start strutting around the booth, pretty much talking shit like the Tigers were world beaters and fuck all y'all.

allan said...

One of them, "Rodney" (his first or last name, I forget, and fuck it, I ain't lookin' it up), is on my short list of total wankers.

...

Ah, who am I kidding?

That's a HUGE FUCKIN LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tim said...

tmrw will be it for me until sunday. going away for a cottage/fishing extended weekend starting wednesday night before i have to start the study process for my final accounting exam next monday.

don't worry - its a 9-5 monday to friday study schedule - meaning theres no way i'll be missing the party this year.

if you guys are still around (or if its on again sometime later) theres a sweet program on sportsnet ontario right now called "this week in baseball" about the dominican system and how mlb plucks players from there.

SoSock said...

Ya-freaking-hoo!

Worked late, had a dinner date, and never saw the score until I got to the bar around 9.

Great shit! Watched the highlights and skimmed JoS when I got home.

Call me hokey, but I think this was a HUGE win. A potential turnaround. A sweep by MFY would have damn near buried us. The split keeps us in all-we-need-is-to-gain-1-game-a-week territory.

ALL ABOARD!

allan said...

Call me hokey, but I think this was a HUGE win. A potential turnaround.

Not sure how huge it was, but it was nice, since 6 GB is better than 8 GB.

However, I'll be happy to say, in 2 months, fuckin A, it WAS a turnaround!
