Angels - 000 004 300 - 7 9 2Santana (7-4-2-4-1, 105) shut down the Sox, Hideki Matsui clubbed a three-run home run off Beckett (6.1-7-6-2-6, 105) , and Manny Declarmen further buried the Sox by walking three of his four batters in the seventh.
Red Sox - 000 100 000 - 2 5 0
Boston had only two hits through the first seven innings: Marco Scutaro's single to begin the first and David Ortiz's solo homer with one out in the fourth.
Beckett pitched well through 5.1 innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. But the roof fell in very quickly: Macier Izturis doubled to right, Alberto Callaspo doubled to left-center, Torii Hunter singled off Adrian Beltre's glove at third, and Shemp hit a dong to right-center.
In the seventh, Beckett struck out Jeff Mathis, but allowed a single to Bourjos and then walked Bobby Abreu. MDC came in and walked Izturis to load the bases. He got Callaspo to geround out to third, but a run scored. Then Delcarmen walked Hunter to re-load the bases and walked Matsui to force in a run. Scott Atchison then surrendered an RBI single to Howie Kendrick.
The Yankees beat the Tigers 11-5 this afternoon. The Rays lost to the A's 4-3.

JOHN LACKEY: CAPTAIN SUPERGREAT!!
JD Drew's .821 OPS is ranked 23rd in the AL.
Just above him? Vernon Wells.
Just below? A-Rod.

Okay, let's go. Get the sweep.
My son is in the bleachers tonight.
The elusive OTT.
Uh oh, FY's foot is sore?
I assume it's just that. Sore. Only this and nothing more.
CLEARLY SAFE!
asshole ump
What happened to Salty?
Re Clemens, OHHHHH YEEEAAHHHH
Infection of some kind in his leg.
But...which leg is it?
we are pretty sure it is the right leg.
little wally is back in his chair.
Don apologized to him yesterday. I guess he came back.
Hey, Zen---how is academia?
My son just sent me a picture from his seats, but I can't figure out how to link to it to show y'all.
Funny you should ask, Amy. Many thoughts on that right now.
I am not sure teaching at a Community College is really academia. It's not university research, so the air isn't quite so rare. There are a lot more issues with nuts and bolts of teaching and managing students than there are high-minded ideas, and when there is the latter, it's not usually incomprehensibly high minded. This is not good or bad, just how I see it.
But my experience of my first week signals quite a change. Being a part timer and running off downtown to the other job constantly was kind of a pain in the ass. The less structured is nice, and certainly the other faculty are seeing me both more often and with more familiarity already.
Overall, it's a great change. But I haven't gotten used to it yet.
Thanks for asking, by the way.
Zen, where do you teach?
Amy, where do you teach?
For example, I am now going to go eat in a restaurant before my night class. That's just weird for me.
I teach Humanities (mostly World Religions) and English comp at City College of San Francisco.
Nice play by an old man!
I think Beckett said to Lowell, "Nice fuckin play"
SMOKIN'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
drew
I teach at Western New England College--at the law school there.
Zen, I also teach students who were generally not the top students in high school or college. I actually enjoy them more than I probably would their richer, more intellectual peers. They have a grasp on reality that is refreshing.
DREW!!! NICE!!!
The D is smokin!!
If Drew cared at all, he'd have smacked his head into the turf.
Allan, where did smokin come from? Why did we both say it there?
the (on) fire is smokin'?
I wasn't even thinking about equating that with fire, at least not consciously.
smokin' hot?
Did you see the overstock.com contest? You can win tickets to the Yankees game and change the numbers on the scoreboard for an inning. I just entered.
i saw that - i'll bet the contest is for US residents only. though i should make sure before i bitch!
Maybe I figured it out?
nice photo!
This game is just flying along. Can we please score some runs?
Wow, nice photo!
I would guess he got a pretty good view of Drew's catch.
Great pic Ms G! Is your son e-mailing them or posting them on a site?
He emailed it to me, but then he later posted it to some site and sent me a link. I haven't figured out how to post phone pictures to a site yet.
So, only clean inning for Cap'n Kickass so far, but at the same time, none with more than 1 baserunner.
Acceptable....
That is, of course, assuming we can get off our offensive asses and score a run or 5.
Papi power!!
PAPI!!!!
QUADRANGULAR!
(should be - only ONE clean....)
MrsG, I have a new phone that lets me post photos to Facebook and other sites. It may depend on the phone?
HEY! Somebody just got off their offensive ass and scored a run!
You scared them, SoSock!
I'm sure there is some way to do it on my phone (he has the same phone I do). I just haven't taken the time to figure it out. I'll get him to show me when he gets home.
BB-eltre
After he mows the grass, that is!
Missed the papi shot while getting food
A - Did "Fair Warning" have "The Cradle Will Rock" on it?
no, that was on "women and children first", the album before FW.
Never mind - found it myself
I am so tired. I may put aside the laptop for a bit and try to just watch the game. Getting back to work is harder every fall.
Yeah - interesting trivia question this morning about that song on "Put Up or Shut Up" (r & r trivia contest on a local radio show)
youtube has some files of isolated guitar tracks -- only evh on stuff like "romeo's delight" and "unchained". wild insane shit!!
Cancer survivor in the booth talking about what a terrible 2003 it was. Her husband was diagnosed in Jan, 03; she was diagnosed in June, 03; and "Aaron Boone hit that home run during my chemo."
i was going to post that. nice dry humor!
1-out double. Damn. DP plz
seriously. dp time.
I hope this isn't one of Beckett's big innings.
Oh Shit. I guess it is.
fuck shemp
Boooooooo
I had to come back to say...
WTF, Josh??? Get your act together.
atch up
Damn, it does seem like Josh can steam along just fine for quite a while, but when he gets in a jam there is usually scoring involved. Of course, that's true of almost every pitcher, but you'd kind of like for your "ace" to be able to work his way out of it more often than not
OK, hole dug. Time to start climbing out
quick dong-a-roonie here would be nice
Papi going first to third!!
SoSock, do we still think of Josh as our ace? I am more inclined to think of Lester that way or even Buchholz. Maybe it's just that Josh has not been around as much or as consistent.
YES!
Now it's time for the dong-a-roonie.
Belt one, Beltre!
Strand a pair. ARRGGGHH
i'd put josh as our #5 this year, even worse than wakefield.
True - in reality he isn't our ace these days. I guess I just still expect ace-like performances based on past results
mdc up
It does sounds like they are saying GORGEOUS!
I love Wakefield, but I think Josh is still better than he is. Maybe on par with Lackey, which does not say much.
i was talking about only 2010. in general, though i would put beckett behind lester and buchholz.
Yeah, I was also talking about 2010.
Not good. MDC in with us three runs down. That does not make me smile.
mdc? - bleh
atchison back up
Enjoyed my relaxed Japanese dinner. The score upon returning, not so much.
Amy, my students' levels vary quite a bit. But that's not so much why I hesitate to call myself an academic. That's more because I don't do research.
manny delragarm
Research is overrated, IMHO. There is a review of a book in today's NYTimes written by two professors (I am blanking on the names) about what is wrong with higher education. One of their key points is that research has sapped resources away from undergraduate education. The reviewer disagrees, but he is the president of GW.
I am sure scientific research is worthwhile, but most academic scholarship, including my own, is nothing but mental masturbation and a means to tenure. It adds little that benefits society.
OK, MDC has GOT to go. He is entirely useless. Why is he even out there AT ALL?
Faces 4 - walks 3.
Nice job. Wish you were doing it somewhere else
Why is he even out there AT ALL?
because we are losing 4-1 and *someone* has to pitch?
ahem, *were* losing 4-1.
Yeah, someone has to pitch. PITCH. Not just walk most of the people you face. That's not pitching.
wakefield up now
And losing 4-1 doesn't mean we give up and put in a noodle arm. Last night we overcame the same gap.
Oh, just ignore me. I am starting on my Where is the BULLPEN rant.
I'm glad not to be part of publish or perish.
I am not glad to have MDC coming in and giving up three walks.
I believe we have the best offense in the majors despite injuries. That leaves little doubt that our weak link is the pitching staff overall, despite the fact that it hasn't had so many injuries.
Gr.
Kinda sux too that Josh gets charged with 2 of those 3 and MDC only 1 after walking 3 of the 4 batters he faced
On-field delay?
Streaker?
crew working on the dirt around the rubber.
2 pitches, 2 outs
nice work, hackers.
1st pitch hacking by both Drew and Dr when down by 6.
Somebody's ready to go home
nava wastes no time in making the 3rd out. 4 batters, 6 pitches.
Nava too - 1st pitch.
Looking like maybe I'll get around to using my broom before the Sox do after all
We can give ourselves a bit of a break by saying that Ervin Santana can sometimes be very good.
I'd like to say you can't be unhappy with beating a team 9 times out of 10 in a season. But that brings up thoughts of our record vs. bad teams, and I find I can be unhappy with that.
Nice work Timmy
Yeah, why didn't Francona put Wakefield in instead of MDC?
hmmmmmmm ...
now victor can flash us his salami.
Grand slam, please.
Papi could have made this game a lot more interesting here by simply showing off his dong. But I guess V-Mart's salami would be even better
Shit - do not squander plz.
While I remain an optimist and will at least be hopeful until the final out - there is no denying that MDC's shitty performance means "getting a couple back here" does NOT put us right back in this game. We need some "heroics" and those are harder to come by
Much hareder........
mmmmm, spell check
straighten your cap, you dork, rodney.
rally caps!
Well, at least I don't have to worry about Papelbon blowing the lead tonight. :)
Always a silver lining.
rout this sideways hat wearing motherfucker.
i would like 6
i will accept 5
Dr teasing us.....
I don't get why they never PR for Lowell
Didn't fool me, Don.
Excellent point meunier. Don't know that it would have made a difference, but excellent point nonetheless
fooled me.
Clean water. POO.
The bus ride is getting bumpier.
Go A's! They're up 1-0 after 1
Oakland down 3-1 now but threatening......
