G126: Red Sox 6, Mariners 3

Mariners - 001 002 000 - 3 7 1
Red Sox - 000 030 30x - 6 10 2
Lackey (8-6-3-2-10, 112) got his act together and Marco Scutaro drove in four runs.

The Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 3-2 (Jose Bautista hit two home runs and drove in all three of Toronto's runs) and the Rays beat the Angels 4-3. Boston gained a game on New York and are 5.5 GB in the East.
Example
Doug Fister / John Lackey
Scutaro, SS
Drew, RF
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowell, 1B
Lowrie, 2B
Nava, LF
Kalish, CF
With six weeks and 37 games to go in the regular season, Boston is 5.5 GB Tampa Bay for the wild card and 6.5 GB New York in the East.

Lackey:
I'm not going to say it's late, but it's definitely not early. These are definitely critical games.
So, could you start pitching good, please, Mr. 95 ERA+, who is also 43rd among 48 qualifying AL pitchers in WHIP (and 91st of 99 MLB pitchers)?

I'll be at the PawSox-Bisons game in Buffalo with Tim tonight -- where Hideki Okajima will be pitching an inning -- but Laura will be running the thread (if the weather cooperates).

AL East:
Yankees/Blue Jays, 7 PM
Rays/Angels, 10 PM
Example
August 23:

1909 - The Cubs steal home three times against Boston, including twice in the first inning, and beat the Braves 11-6.

1952 - Bob Elliott of the Giants is ejected for protesting a strike two call. His replacement, Bobby Hofman, is also tossed for arguing the third strike of the same at-bat.

1989 - Rick Dempsey's solo home run in the top of the 22nd inning gives the Dodgers a 1-0 win over the Expos in Montreal. (Laura and I were at this game!)
LAD - 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 1 - 1 20 1
MTL - 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 0 - 0 13 1
1992 - Andy Carter of the Clearwater Phillies defeats Scott Bakkum of the Winter Haven Red Sox 1-0 (Florida State League (A)). Neither team gets a hit in what is believed to be the first double no-hitter in the minors in 40 years. The run scores on two walks and two sacrifice bunts.

Most amazing part of that linescore: 1 run, 20 hits

tim said...

20 hits isn't so bad when you consider they played 22 innings...

Woo pawsox - hopefully the weather holds up for us too, its supposed to be fine and clear up by gametime.

laura k said...

The return of the Noodle??? Say it ain't so!

tim said...

Fuckin Allan. All stuck in traffic. Oh well.

Damon sez it's unlikely he would accept the trade.

laura k said...

Allan's not there yet?! Yeesh. I thought he'd have more than enough time.

He might be lost. Without me to navigate, that is a distinct possibility.

Amy said...

Damon? WTF??

Amy said...

Where is Allan going that Tim is concerned? Just curious!

laura k said...

It's in the post. :)

laura k said...

Tim and Allan are seeing the Pawtucket Sox at Buffalo. Hopefully it will not get rained out.

Zenslinger said...

The idea of Damon back on the Sox for six weeks is not as turbulent as I might have expected. The drama's drained out of the situation at this point. For me, at least.

laura k said...

Bermuda ad for ceremonial pitch?

laura k said...

Good start. Not that I'm ever optimistic with Lackey on the mound.

Amy said...

Wow, Allan drove all the way to Buffalo! How long a trip is that? Hope the weather is better there than here. Do we have a prediction on whether rain will interfere with tonight's game (the one in Boston)?

s1c said...

OTT - good start, be even better if they start off by scoring like 7 runs. In the mood for an easy game tonight.

laura k said...

Allan met Tim in a nearby town, Burlington, then they are driving to Buffalo together. It's only 1.5 hrs away. The stadium is right near the border.

laura k said...

Our game, it's supposed to rain lightly off and on all night.

Amy said...

S1C, I have been in the mood for an easy game all season. I think I can count on one hand the number of easy games I have seen (or heard) this season!

Amy said...

Oh, so Tim was waiting for him at the meeting spot, not in Buffalo. Got it.

laura k said...

We drive to Buffalo all the time, to pick people up from the airport, or fly from there, or to see friends.

Amy said...

I didn't realize it was only an hour and half away. Sort of like the trip for us to go to Boston. No big deal.

laura k said...

Yup. That's why I write frequently about my troubles at the border - we fly from there becuase it is so much cheaper than flying from Toronto.

s1c said...

no, there haven't been too many laughers this year.

Amy said...

I knew you flew from there---just didn't realize how close it is. We also choose to fly from Boston rather than Hartford which is 15 minutes away, if we can get a better flight or deal out of Boston.

laura k said...

Or the few there have been have been overshadowed by all the other nonsense.

Amy said...

Boy, that was either a REALLY good throw or really bad baserunning!

s1c said...

Our future Right fielder shows off his arm!!!

laura k said...

When we went to our nephew's wedding in Santa Fe last summer, flying from Toronto would have run about $1600. We both flew from Buffalo for less than $500 RT. Huge difference.

Even less dramatic differences, like flying to NYC, is half the price.

laura k said...

Lackey cruising??

Amy said...

We have to go to FL for a wedding over Labor Day (the things we do for family...). Same deal: flying out of Boston because it was much cheaper and there were more flights to choose from.

laura k said...

Ooooh Florida over Labour Day, lovely.

Amy said...

Yah, hurricane season, heat, humidity---what could be better that Labor Day in Miami.

At least your nieces/nephews get married in places someone might want to visit.

laura k said...

Alright Beltre

Amy said...

I do love Beltre. Definitely my favorite this season.

laura k said...

Oh yeah, it would take a VERY special relationship to get me to Florida over Labour Day.

Or to get me to Florida at all.

Our cousins down there always invite us, but two spring training trips was enough Florida for us.

Amy said...

Fister---on the body part team? With Rollie Fingers?

laura k said...

Beltre's been a great addition. I also like Scutaro. Wish tonight I can say without being ridiculed, since Allan isn't here!

laura k said...

Oh definitely on the body part team!

Amy said...

After our trip to FL in March, I would never return to FL by choice. We tried Sanibel because people said it was the best part of FL and because it was close to Ft Myers. NEVER AGAIN.

But this is my niece---Harvey's brother's daughter. It's a small wedding, and we are the only aunt and uncle since my sister in law is an only child.

laura k said...

There's quite a few guys on that team... none of which are springing immediately to mind but I know they're there...

s1c said...

I think with scutaro, the revolving door at SS has finally stopped.

laura k said...

Right, for a niece or nephew, you gotta. At least it's close so you can just go for the weekend without a huge trek.

Amy said...

Why would Allan ridicule you for liking Scutaro?

I like him also, though not as much as Beltre.

laura k said...

Don & Jerry are talking about Bermuda - the only beach-type vacation Allan and I ever took - went for a few days for our 10th anniversary. Off season, had the whole island to ourselves. It's beautiful there.

Amy said...

There must be a Chester. But we need Benjamin to do all the research.

Amy said...

Funny--Harvey just said we should go back to Bermuda. We went there in 92 in May after school got out. It is beautiful. We didn't like the food much (too bland, English-y), but we hear that that has changed.

laura k said...

Scutaro? Because according to Allan his numbers don't warrant my praise. On-base not high enough, not good enough on defense.

Ridicule is too strong a word, but he would be sarcastic.

s1c said...

Chester

laura k said...

True, it's not a special food place. I guess I didn't expect anything in that dept. It's just so beautiful, and not as hot and humid as a Caribbean island.

We were there in 1997.

laura k said...

Barry Foote

Amy said...

Scutaro was a late bloomer. He has been much better lately. And I guess Lowrie is not going to replace him.

laura k said...

Yes, Benjamin is the king of all-whatever teams.

s1c said...

1985 - best part of bermuda was the beer - had been out to sea for 3 weeks.

laura k said...

Greg Legg

laura k said...

I love how most of s1c's travel memories revolve around being on land for the first time in some long stretch.

laura k said...

shit

Amy said...

We were in Bermuda for just a long week end over Memorial Day---pre-season for Bermuda, I believe. We do like good food, especially on vacation. I would definitely go back, even if the food has not improved.

Lowrie...bad hop. Damn.

s1c said...

Frack

meunier said...

That hit an indentation in the infield.

laura k said...

I guess Leo "the Lip" Durocher doesn't count.

Amy said...

The beer? Was it cold or served warm, English style?

laura k said...

Hey, we love to go to food-y places. We ate our way through France and Italy for a month. But some countries just aren't big food places.

I think we were in Bermuda for 3 or 4 days, too.

Amy said...

Hand

laura k said...

English beer is not served warm. That is a strange US myth.

SoSock said...

With Lackey pitching - that is a good thing.

Amy said...

Lots of Harts also.

SoSock said...

Damn - spoke too soon

laura k said...

in game Bermuda tourism ad

DURING THE GAME

No PBP, everything stops for a Bermuda tourism ad.

WTF

s1c said...

Amy - only warm beer I ever had was in Rodman, Panama (the whole town lost power during our stay for 2 days).

laura k said...

Oh yeah, Hart - good one.

Jerry is being Don tonight. He's said "gets the bad news" and "by way of the K" so far.

Amy said...

Laura, you are now making me far too aware of all the ads!! My ignorance was bliss.

laura k said...

I'm here to open your eyes to the truth. ;)

SoSock said...

No PBP, everything stops for a Bermuda tourism ad.

That REALLY sux. It's gone too far. Of course, it went too far a long time ago IMHO

Amy said...

Rodman, Panama---not a place I know.

laura k said...

Amy, your Hand link shows only one ML player named Hand.

Amy said...

The real question is how do we stop it or at least limit it? Boycott all the sponsors? Write nasty letters? Do fans have enough clout to outweigh the revenue that rake in from all the ads?

laura k said...

Three-Finger Brown?

Amy said...

Isn't one Hand enough for a team?

Amy said...

Sadly, Rollie Fingers is the only one I could think of on my own.

SoSock said...

All right. Dinner with a friend, then music awaits -
Drum up some good news for me by the time I get home plz, like a win maybe.
I mean, sheez, his name is Fister.......do something rude guys!
(ducks and runs)
LATER!

laura k said...

I don't know if that's the real question, but if you wanted to do something, I think it would have to be very specific. Trying to get rid of one or two specific practices.

Amy said...

Have fun, SoSock!

laura k said...

Isn't one Hand enough for a team?

Yes, definitely! But you linked to a search, not a player. You said "lots of Harts, too" so I was expecting lots of Hands.

Amy said...

Well, if they start putting ads on the uniforms, I'd be up in arms.

Amy said...

Well, I have low standards. I'd take a minor leaguer for the team. After all, look at all the minor leaguers we have taken on the real team this year and what THEY have done! :)

laura k said...

I think they know that would upset too many fans, and that's why it hasn't happened yet.

laura k said...

Ha ha, but I think the game has to be major leaguers.

Amy said...

I think that when it comes to TV, most people are so used to ads on everything they watch that they are desensitized, like I am. Most of us are just sheep being led to slaughter by subliminal advertising in every aspect of our lives, especially on television.

Amy said...

At least Fenway is still just Fenway. If it became something like Prudential Park, the fans would go crazy.

s1c said...

Amy - Rodman is where we stopped after going through the canal in 85.

laura k said...

The reason Fenway and Wrigley and Yankee Stadium are still called those are because ownership realizes they are worth more with their real names - that the park itself is worth more than naming rights. Fans would go beserk, and they don't need that.

laura k said...

Ads between innings are one thing. But no one sbould get complacent about ads during the game. It's disgraceful.

In Jays games, Rogers is putting in ads in between pitches, during an AB!

laura k said...

Best body part name: Tony Armas. Four body parts in one name.

laura k said...

I can't take credit for that, btw.

Amy said...

Is Dodger Stadium still called Dodger Stadium? When did the whole phenomenon of corporate names on arenas/ballparks begin? I can't even keep track of the names of parks any more, since the corporate sponsors are always changing, as in San Francisco.

Amy said...

Love it--Toe Knee Arm-as!

Who thought of it, if not you?

laura k said...

Yes, Dodger Stadium.

Amy said...

Who is this guy pitching in Lackey's body and uniform tonight?

laura k said...

It's someone's name on SoSH. He spells it Toe Knee Arm Ass. Pretty cute.

Amy said...

Huh, I missed the ass!

laura k said...

Is this the New Lackey? He had that great start that ... you know ...

laura k said...

Oh god, these ads for BP, how nauseating!!!! WHAT BULLSHIT

Amy said...

It's funny---I thought of Tony Armas, but didn't catch the Toe Knee or Ass.

Now there are LOTS of Tonys so that could be a very long list.

laura k said...

Ah, it's the Eastern Bank 5th inning. The words Eastern Bank fly by us over and over.

Amy said...

Don't remind me of that bullpen implosion.

laura k said...

A few Tawainese players named Chin.

Amy said...

It does seem much worse this season, I admit. The Safe at Second shit is particularly annoying, even to me.

First time I noticed this Eastern Bank thing. Thanks....

laura k said...

Oh any time. :)

Allan always complains about the Safe and Secure thing, too. It is very bad.

Amy said...

Not an error?

laura k said...

Oo, nice defense there, thanks, Seattle!

s1c said...

Will take that one!

laura k said...

Don't remind me of that bullpen implosion.

I was trying to be gentle.

s1c said...

AN ERROR - do you think Don, OMG fire the scorer!

Amy said...

I am surprised no one has taken out ads every time there is an error. Seems like an obvious one for an insurance company.

laura k said...

Ok Nava, pretend it's your debut

laura k said...

I think teams don't want errors sponsored - wouldn't look good!

Amy said...

Doesn't he need a guy on first to repeat his debut?

laura k said...

It is only a matter of time before individual pitches are sponsored. This fast ball brought to you by NASCAR...

laura k said...

I just meant swinging for a HR. Don't be picky :)

Amy said...

They could sell only the OTHER team's errors.

s1c said...

ads - that is when you know it is time to go get the beer from the fridge!

laura k said...

Ok, that works, too!

Amy said...

OK, now we do have a man on first. Kalish can repeat his Grand Slam instead.

Amy said...

But no, not to be.

laura k said...

Not what we had in mind, Ryan. Scutaro, over to you

s1c said...

WHAT THE HELL? WHY ARE YOU SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH?

Amy said...

DO NOT SQUANDER.

laura k said...

REPEAT: DO NOT SQUANDER

Amy said...

YES!!!

laura k said...

YES!!!

s1c said...

Scoot scoot SCUTARO!!!

Amy said...

Heh, let Allan mock Scutaro now!

laura k said...

yeah, take that, Allan!

Amy said...

ON FIRE!

laura k said...

Whoo-hoo, keep em coming!

s1c said...

There we go!!!

laura k said...

We loooove the 2-out rally!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

In the words of Steven Slater,

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Amy said...

Westcoastsox, you been lurking out there?

laura k said...

If we include all the players named Tony, what about all the players named Dick?

Someone had to say it, might as well be me.

s1c said...

If it seems like I disappear tonight, BH is sick and B-fly is on a date, so am also playing nurse.

Lets have an OTT here Lackey!

Amy said...

God, how did I forget about Dick?

Amy said...

I hope BH feels better soon.

And is BFly on a date with the same person you were referring to the other night?

laura k said...

Good man, taking care of BH.

****

Since Allan isn't here, I will mention his inevitable comment: Dick Pole.

Amy said...

I had never heard of Dick Pole, so I googled him to see if that was really his name and found this .

laura k said...

Did you see the last sentence of that post? Great deadpan.

Amy said...

SHIT

laura k said...

Oh fuckin A, tied already.

Amy said...

Yes. Clever.

s1c said...

Yes - B-fly is out with the trooper, going to see a movie

laura k said...

I have to take a break from threading, but will still monitor. Please remember, just in case, DNFTT.

Kathryn said...

Hey All, I just got in, got some laundry folded, talked to my daughter (all while watching the game). Lackey just can't keep it clean. Have I mentioned that I really don't like that guy?

Bermuda, my husband and I went with his firm back in 1993. I was pregnant with Jonathan so I couldn't go parasailing. Anyway, I remembered it as being clean, friendly, and beautiful. We went back two years ago with the kids. It was just as gorgeous as I remembered!

Amy said...

A trooper, you say? Like the state police? Presumably she will be safe.

Amy said...

Hi, MrsG. Lackey looked pretty good until the 6th. We thought he had been a victim of body snatching.

s1c said...

Amy - yes - her summer job was working at State Police in Bridgeport

Amy said...

What was she doing for the State Police? How close are you to Bridgeport? I thought you were near Waterbury.

Amy said...

Ichiro's Nomarisms get on my nerves.

s1c said...

Clerical help, updating computer systems for the mechanic etc. Is about an hour drive but 40 hours a week at $9 per hour. She spends about 40 bucks for gas so not to bad.

meunier said...

Another close and late game at the moment

Amy said...

That is a long commute. Does she have an interest in police work? I guess in this economy, getting a summer job that pays $9 an hour is more than worth the commute.

laura k said...

Is $9/hr good there? It's sub-minimum wage in Ontario.

Amy said...

Scutaro again!! I hope Allan hears us laughing at his scorn.

s1c said...

No, no interest in working for the cops. Just a good summer job. She's learned a lot, like gas isn't cheap. Haven't had to mention anything all summer about her leaving the car with no gas either.

Scoot!!!

laura k said...

Yeah baby! Scu scu scutaro

Amy said...

I would think for a college kid, it's not bad pay. My college graduate daughter is making $13 an hour, four years out of school.

Kathryn said...

Yipee! Runs!!

Amy said...

And Drew does it again also!

Kathryn said...

I'm not sure what I think about Damon. I am wondering what he can add to the team.

laura k said...

Such a different scale depending on where you live.

Kathryn said...

And didn't he just say something about liking to play in NY so much more than Boston?

s1c said...

L-girl - 50 cents above min.

laura k said...

Damon has 36 hrs to decide

I know I don't want him

6-3!

Amy said...

I don't want to see Damon in a Red Sox uniform. But I am not always the most rational fan. :)

I don't see Damon agreeing to come back to Boston. I think the Tigers were just testing the market for after the season to see what he might be worth.

Papi!!

laura k said...

And didn't he just say something about liking to play in NY so much more than Boston?

9C reported that he heard it on Michael Kay's show. Damon supposedly said "not even close".

laura k said...

Oh not that moron Fitzy again. How can we miss you if you won't go away?

Kathryn said...

My daughter got a summer job in Williamsburg (VA) making $9 an hour + commission. It is turning into a fall job too.

PAPI!!

That is a good wage for this economy and being in college. My high school son could not find a job for the summer and neither could many of his friends. Tough job market for teenagers.

Amy said...

I can't imagine that the cost of living in Ontario is more than the cost of living in New England. So it is interesting that the minimum is higher there. More taken for taxes? Higher standards for quality of life needs?

laura k said...

Cost of living in Toronto area is very high. I don't know what New England is like, so I can't say how it compares. Things are very expensive here.

Minimum wage is $10 and going up to $11.50 over the next few years. Taxes are high, but of course they cover your basic health care.

Kathryn said...

Wow, minimum wage is $7.25 in Virginia.

Amy said...

WTF is Bostonmilitia.com and why is this going on DURING the game?

laura k said...

Higher standards for quality of life needs?

No question about that.

laura k said...

Women's professional football, I believe. Why during a game... indeed.

Kathryn said...

$10 canadian is worth $9.51 US

laura k said...

Well, the conversion varies all the time. But that doesn't really matter to someone who lives and works in Ontario.

Amy said...

I am trying to think of how to compare the costs of living. My daughter lives in Boston and pays over $2300 for a very small three bedroom basement level apartment (in a good neighborhood, though). Is it much more than that in Ontario?

I assume gas is more there. Not sure how to compare food costs or other basic necessities.

s1c said...

Well it is good enough for her, going back to school with over 2 grand.

meunier said...

Thank you NESN, that double screen made me have to close and reopen a new mlb.tv window

Amy said...

(My daughter shares it with two roommates.)

laura k said...

Ontario is huge - bigger than Texas. I'm only talking about the GTA, Greater Toronto.

laura k said...

going back to school with over 2 grand

That's excellent. Living at home is good that way. :)

Kathryn said...

Saving what you make in the summer. That's a concept my daughter hasn't thought of!

laura k said...

Rents vary so much according to neighbourhood. People always ask me about rents in NYC, but where in NY? Makes a big difference.

s1c said...

Amy - yep, means dad doesn't have to make as many deposits in her bank account this coming semester (though I probably will)

Amy said...

True, a one bedroom in Park Slope will cost a lot more than a three bedroom in Bushwick.

s1c said...

In seasons past, that would have been a DR. Double

laura k said...

Dr Singles!

Amy said...

I had one daughter who saved and barely touched her money except when necessary and another who did not understand the concept at all. Go figure.

Rob said...

Went to Florida in July, 2006, so the beaches were empty... Stayed with some family in the city of Palm Coast which was very nice. I really liked it. Then had some more family near Ocala. Didn't like that nearly as much. Saw both sides of Florida on that trip. Good and bad.
