G127: Red Sox 5, Mariners 3

Mariners - 000 000 300 - 3 4 0
Red Sox - 000 004 01x - 5 7 0
Josh Beckett allowed a single to Ichiro Suzuki to start the game -- it did not get past the mound -- then retired the next 16 batters. Through 6.1 innings, he had allowed only two base runners: that infield single and a two-out walk in the sixth. And Boston had a 4-0 lead, having finally solved Pauley (5.2-6-4-2-1, 90).

But the Red Sox rally, a Seattle pitching change, and some grounds crew work on the mound took nearly a half-hour, and perhaps Beckett had cooled off. Or the increased rain affected his grip, as it might have done to Pauley, who had been pounding the strike zone, but lost command in the sixth.

Beckett gave up a home run to Russell Branyan, then a single to Jose Lopez and a two-run dong to Casey Kotchman. And it was suddenly 4-3. Daniel Bard relieved Beckett (6.1-4-3-1-7, 101) and also pitched out of a small jam in the eighth, after a walk and an HBP. Jonathan Papelbon got the side in order in the ninth, although Kotchman battled him for 12 pitches before grounding out to third.

Pauley retired the first nine Sox hitters and 13 of the first 14. In the sixth, Marco Scutaro reached on an infield single and after J.D. Drew lined out to left, Victor Martinez singled and David Ortiz walked, loading the bases. Adrian Beltre's liner caromed off Pauley and rolled to a stop near the third base line (1-0), Mike Lowell lofted a sac fly to right (2-0), and Daniel Nava lined a single to right (4-0). Darnell McDonald, who had pinch-run for Nava in the sixth, had an RBI single in the eighth.
Example
David Pauley / Josh Beckett
Scutaro, SS
Drew, RF
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Lowell, 1B
Nava, LF
Hall, 2B
Kalish, CF
The weather is not great, but Game One is expected to start on time, so ...

Let's do this again! Note to Beckett: Seattle is not a good baseball team. They average 3.29 runs per game. Even you ought to be able to tame them, despite opponents having a robust 1.100 OPS (.373/.420/.680) in your last three starts.

Kevin Cash (and his 9 OPS+*) was activated and Dusty Brown was optioned to Pawtucket. ... Hideki Okajima will make at least one more appearance for the PawSox.

* Hey, it's better than Gustavo Molina's -24!

AL East:
Rays/Angels, 3:30 PM
Yankees/Blue Jays, 7 PM
Example
August 25:

1902 - AL president Ban Johnson announces that, after two seasons in Baltimore, the franchise will be moved to New York for 1903. Thus, the Yankees are not an original AL team.

1922 - The Cubs lead the Phillies 25-6 after four innings and hold on for a 26-23 win, as the Phillies leave the bases loaded in the top of the ninth. The 49 runs is a record for most total runs in a game. Philadelphia uses only two pitchers.

1978 - MLB umpires stage a one-day strike and semipro and amateur umps are pressed into service. In Toronto, Blue Jays coach Don Leppert and Twins coach Jerry Zimmerman are asked to umpire. It's the first time since 1941 that active players or coaches have umpired.

I am quite annoyed to be missing not one, but two games today. Go Sox x 2 and see you all Friday.

HEY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deadspin: "We've obtained financial statements for a number of baseball teams — containing perhaps some of the most closely guarded information in sports — and they offer a rare glimpse at how MLB franchises do brisk business in the modern era.

We'll have some analysis later, not to mention another set of statements. For now, take a look at the documents below, paying close attention to the teams' operating income, their revenue-sharing figures, the size of their TV deals, and the amortization of player contracts (a neat trick of accounting pioneered by Bill Veeck that allows an owner to turn his team into a lucrative tax shelter). If there is a thread running through all of these financial statements, it is the incredible ability of baseball teams — whether they're winners or losers, big market or small, "rich" or "poor" — to make their owners a fat pile of money.

"$500,000 for trainers? What a bunch of pussies. When I was 12, I would just put a couple of Otter Pops on my swollen, bruised arm.

a spider is weaving a web in the top corner of our door to the backyard. laying down little pieces of web. i went away for a few minutes and he had made another 8-10 rounds. very cool.

sox get a gift call from "yankee joe" west. ichiro called for interference on his slide into second on the dp chance. sox had no shot at the dp -- hall bobbled the grounder before flipping to scutaro -- but west makes the DP call. i suppose ichiro was too far to the outfield side of the bag and he did made no attempt to tag the bag, but it's a rare call.

allan said...

nesn commercial showing kalish's first home run. remy says: "yankee stadium, what a place to hit your first home run."

yeah, those 1.5-year-old parks are pretty special.

mattymatty said...

Our offense isn't looking too good, but on the flip side its nice to see Beckett throwing well. Hopefully we can start to put some hits together.

Here's an opportunity... its Big Papi time!

mattymatty said...

Loaded up. Lets do this!

meunier said...

Beltre has a terrible carrer avg. vs the Mariners :/

allan said...

a head-rubbing salami dong, anyone?

mattymatty said...

According to the Mariners version of the PitchZone, two of the four pitches to Papi were strikes. Who's behind the plate today, by the way? Joe West?

allan said...

west is at first, i think.

allan said...

RUN

meunier said...

Ouch insult and injury for Pauley

mattymatty said...

There it is! 1-0, Sox.

What say ye, Mikey Doubles?

allan said...

rob drake is behind the dish. he has called several pitches off the plate strikes, more for beckett than pauley, it feels like. but then he called some of them balls, too. i think flo thought ball 4 was a strike, but it was low, i guess.

meunier said...

Dr. gets it done

mattymatty said...

I'll take it. Sac fly from Mikey Doubles. 2-0. Runners still on. This isn't over yet...

allan said...

pauley has lost his command this inning

Tom DePlonty said...

Nava!

allan said...

NAVA sees run(s)!

mattymatty said...

NavaPower!

allan said...

buh-bye pauley.

mattymatty said...

Pauly threw a heck of a game though.

Did anyone catch the end of the Phillies/Astros game last night? In the 15th inning the Phils had some runners on with Ryan Howard up. The count was something and 2 and Howard checked his swing - definitely didn't swing - and the third base ump ruled he did swing and then immediately threw him out of the game. It was like, "yes you swung and yeeeeer outta here!" Howard went ballistic, but the Phils were out of position players at that point so Roy Oswalt had to come in and play left field while Raul Ibanez took over at first base.

Benjamin said...

Awesome. Everyone can use some runs around here.

tim said...

awwwwwww nava!

currently at school studying but just checked in right as nava singled :)

bout time we get the fuck train some run support.

see ya later!

meunier said...

Why replace Nava?

allan said...

it's fuckin Call Interference Day!

meunier said...

No SB catcher interference

mattymatty said...

Then the home plate ump calls the 0-1 pitch, which is about twenty feet outside, a strike. Ugh...

Still, good inning there. 4-0, Sox. Hopefully Beckett can keep his foot on the gas.

allan said...

batter interference, actually.
hall's bat clipped bard.

also seemed like pauley had trouble with the wetter conditions, threw way more balls. we'll see how beckett does.

allan said...

JB at 85 thru 6

allan said...

27 minute wait for beckett.

meunier said...

Branyan dong

Amy said...

Just getting out of class and a meeting. What's the score?

Benjamin said...

About to say Becket was holding up fine after the wait.

How are you and Laura holding up, btw?

allan said...

that's enough line drives, pls.

farrell out - bard up

allan said...

4-1

we're good, i think. tough not seeing her in the morning, but of the 4 times we have done this, this was the least brutally sad.

FUCK 4-3

Tom DePlonty said...

Crap.

allan said...

thanks for taking a massive dump on the 4-0 lead, josh.

Amy said...

OK, I found it. 4-3 now. Damn. I cursed the game again.

allan said...

"Quality Start" for Beckett, though! Yay!

Benjamin said...

At least that rally's killed now. Outs, please.

allan said...

poked my head outside.

tala is laying in the dirt, where cody used to dig her holes. she was watching the yard as usual, but looked more sad than alert.

dammit.

now she came into the living room with me.

allan said...

she digs the dirt and scatters it over the patio, but rarely lays in it. i've seen her do it maybe 2-3 times in 3 years.

allan said...

bard in the 8th
bot in the 9th

Kathryn said...

Well crap. I got in the car just in time to hear Nava's hit, but it was downhill after that.

I just got home. It looks suspiciously like our dog spent the day on our bed (where she doesn't belong). But I can't get mad at her...thinking about Cody. I am surprised though. She is old and not as spry as she once was. I'm surprised she could get up on the bed.

allan said...

jaso hits dong to begin TB-LAA game

allan said...

POP UP BUNT!

Amy said...

Poor Tala. Is her appetite ok? I am sure she knows something is not right.

allan said...

she ate fine last night, but it was only a few hours after we had returned from the vet.

we'll see tonight. hope this game ends soon so i can spend a few hours out with her before 7.

allan said...

cody was so relaxed and mellow, she was often hard to read. not so with tala. if she is sad or down, it is obvious.

s1c said...

Frack I get off the bus it is 4-1 Sox (kotchman up) and I get home and it is 4-3. Got to be kidding me, c'mon Bard.

Amy said...

I hope this game ends soon also--because I have to go to another meeting and because if it does, it probably means that Bot shuts them down in the 9th. Hopeful thinking.

allan said...

hit a stray thread on his right front pocket. shit.

mattymatty said...

Boy, it really looked like that didn't hit Figgins...

allan said...

what could the ump possibly hear on that hbp?

WHEW! DREW!

Benjamin said...

That laundry has delicate sensibilities.

Thankfully, the inning's ended without any damage done. Any damage.

Kathryn said...

Our dog T had a complete change in affect when her lifelong companion died two years ago. Very sad.

Benjamin said...

I take it Drew's catch was more dramatic than it appeared on GDGD.

allan said...

two of our old dog walkers from nyc emailed to share some memories. one story about cody and buster in the snow, we had never heard before!

we also heard from our next door neighbour at the first place we lived in canada before we moved here. cody LOVED (in flashing 200-pt type) her, was beyond obsessed for some reason. their old blind dog passed away a few months ago at age 17.

allan said...

line shot to RF. i was worried it was going to carry -- but it did not and drew reached up on the run near the edge of the track and snared it.

Amy said...

It's so nice that people are sharing their memories with you. She must have been a very special dog (though I tend to think every dog is special!).

We had one cat who actually became much nicer and more affectionate after her companion died. We decided she was really meant to be an only cat.

meunier said...

Why so many balls to the pitcher today from both sides?

allan said...

so many people have described her as "dignified". that would not be on the short list of my adjectives. or long list!

s1c said...

Its always tough when you lose a pet. BH sometimes still cries over gambit and we are coming up on 1 year.

Amy said...

What kind of pet was Gambit?

Cody had a dignified look to her. Tala, on the other hand, looks impish! Maybe it's just that I am projecting on to them from your stories, but Cody just did seem to be the proper and polite one!

allan said...

buster will be gone 5 years in november and laura still gets teary. (talking about him after a glass of wine doesn't help!)

Benjamin said...

She must have been really special to receive that many eulogies as a dog.

s1c said...

Gambit was a Mutt - part shepherd, part chow, part golden retriever - was 16 or 17 years old (rescued from the pound so not sure) got him when the daughter was like 4. Best dog ever had.

allan said...

well, she lived in a few different places/countries! and had many dog walkers and other friends.

Amy said...

Wow, 16-17 years---that's a long life for a dog. They do say that mutts tend to be healthier---richer gene pool, fewer genetic problems. But you also must have taken great care of him.

Amy said...

Well, I have to go to my meeting in two minutes. Guess I won't see the end of this one. TELL BOT TO BE BOT.

allan said...

m'wave!

Kathryn said...

Yea, a run!

Boo, an out.

allan said...

extra cushion for the bot

s1c said...

Amy - I always said the pecking order in this house was b-fly, bh, gambit, rosie (cat 1), burton (cat 2) and then me. So yeah you could say he was taken care of.

allan said...

s1c: remembered to tell you i saw an ontario car plate the other day:

BFLY 286

(or maybe not 286; that's how they go: 4 letters and 3 numbers)

allan said...

we have seen A--- for years and they are starting to go thru the Bs now.

Kathryn said...

Nice catch. One.

meunier said...

WHAT A CATCH!

allan said...

HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

snuffer snag!!!!

s1c said...

Bfly plate - love it! We're going to order her a special license plate for christmas - bfly - 91

allan said...

we have a personal plate now, but when we bought the car we were given AXBF 649. and we liked seeing other cars with the same letters, and close to our number. we started referring to our car as "ax-buff".

it's perfectly normal.

allan said...

finish him.

s1c said...

BH's family all have special plates - Their intials and year born. So breaking with tradition by going bfly - 91 on the animal special plate.
