G162: Red Sox 8, Yankees 4

Yankees - 011 000 011 - 4 8 1
Red Sox - 200 023 10x - 8 8 2
Jed Lowrie hit two home runs, scored three runs, and drove in three runs as the Red Sox closed out the 2010 season with a win over the second-place Yankees.

Boston finished the injury-riddled season with a 89-73 record -- only the second time in the past nine years they have failed to win as many as 93 games. They scored 818 runs, their lowest total since 2001, and 54 fewer than last year. The 744 runs allowed was eight more than last season.

David Ortiz went 3-for-3, including a bunt single. J.D. Drew hit a two-run dong in the first.

The Red Sox stole four bases in the sixth inning on two double steals. With Daniel Nava batting, Ryan Kalish stole second and Bill Hall stole third. Then, with Eric Patterson at the plate, Nava stole second and when Dumbo's threw down, Kalish stole home.

Lackey (7.2-6-3-2-10, 118) pitched quite well (best stuff of the year?). Daniel Bard came into the eighth inning with the bases loaded (and the potential tying run on deck) and got Posada on a groundout. Jonathan Papelbon needed 29 pitches to nail it down in the ninth.
Example
Dustin Moseley / John Lackey
Patterson, 2B
Lowrie, SS
Drew, RF
Ortiz, DH
Hall, 3B
Kalish, CF
Varitek, C
Nava, LF
Anderson, 1B
A win would give Boston a 9-9 tie in the season series -- for the third straight year! Also, if the Red Sox win, Lord Lynch wins the W-L contest.

Tampa Bay and New York are both 95-66. If they are tied after today, the Rays, because of their 10-8 edge against the Yankees during the season, win the East. The Rays/Royals play at 2 PM.

Today, if:

Padres beat Giants
Atlanta beats Phillies

the NL will have two days of pre-playoffs playoffs!

Monday - Giants at Padres to decide NL West, then:

Tuesday - Monday's loser at Atlanta to decide Wild Card.

Cloudy, chilly fall day here in New England. Trees are changing, frost advisories are up... a very fitting way to end the season.

Has Remy said anything about doing a "homer inning" today?

Lord Lynch said...

Game isn't carried here today, but just wanted to wish all the JoS community a good offseason, and will be back next year, all being well.

Amy said...

Last Sox game for 2010. Last game ever for Tek? Last game thread.

It is definitely fall.

Amy said...

Good luck, Lord, in the W-L contest, for lots of reasons.

What is a homer inning?

allan said...

Remy does play by play as the most Sox-centric announcer ever. WAY over the top. The only time I heard him do it was a couiple of years ago, and it was hilarious. Complaining that the wind and shadows were anti-Sox, etc.

Amy said...

Just read the Lackey post. What a baby he is. So was that not a hit? Or is Jeter on first a mirage?

allan said...

"If I had a real infield to work with, that gets caught. But it is what it is."

Lord Lynch said...

If I don't win, no-one does?

Now I'm really cursing that bloody extra innings loss when I was there in Baltimore in June.

Rob said...

He makes me consider a silver lining that is John Lackey not going to the playoffs.

Rob said...

I can't believe I just thought that.

allan said...

If I don't win, no-one does?

Correct.

Kathryn said...

FIRE!!!!

Rob said...

Castig just said he got a text from one of the Rays broadcasters in the wee hours of this morning that said, "We love Robert Manuel!"

Rob said...

I would love it if Big Papi did that more next year! Slap 'em, large father!

Amy said...

OK, let's chase this kid away.

allan said...

wow - just saw some commercial on mlbtv for the world's deadliest drives (or roads). holy shit!

Rob said...

I want to watch that show!

Rob said...

Dennis Eckersley is 56 years old today!

Amy said...

I assume that was because the wind took the ball out of the park.

allan said...

NESN ooo-ing and aww-ing over Cano's OBP yesterday.

Which reminds that during the 5-game sweep by in late 2006, Manny reached base in 19 of 20 PA!! And he got ripped by McAdam for being lazy.

Rob said...

He just got unlucky for a pitch.

on various vacations in italy and other places, we have taken local buses that go along winding roads on the sides of hills. i usually white-knuckle it the entire way, can't talk, leaning into the aisle as if to balance the bus more.

Amy said...

I can relate to that, Allan. In fact, I don't much like ever being in a car. Or a plane.

Amy said...

TEK!!

Rob said...

Wow does Heidi ever look good in red!

allan said...

Tek thinks he can play 4 more years?!?!?

Amy said...

So Tek says he can hang out longer as the backup catcher. I wonder how cheaply.

Rob said...

May have lost myself a bit there... Let me revise this: I hope John Lackey decides in the offseason he doesn't want to play baseball anymore.

Amy said...

Damn Lackey.

Kathryn said...

They showed a replay of Lackey after ARod's hit. I'm not sure, but it looked like he may have been yelling, "Catch that ball." Maybe directed at Drew?

Rob said...

Bronson Arroyo will start Game 2 of the NLDS for the Reds... Why can't we get guys like that?

Amy said...

I was really sad when the Sox gave up Arroyo. I always liked him. I realize that he may be better in the NL, but I'd be happy to have him right now. Especially RIGHT NOW.

He certainly could be at least as effective as Lackey, DiceK, and Beckett have been.

Kathryn said...

This is the bitter-sweet part of the game, when the guys get called back to standing ovations.

Amy said...

BYe, Papi. :(

allan said...

Dumbo unable to get that one.

Rob said...

Please, Joe and Dave, shut up about college football. This is the last game of the season. Baseball! Baseball!

Zenslinger said...

Large Father, done for the season...I hope he got an ovation as the PR came in.

allan said...

Royals 2-0 after 4.

allan said...

big ovation, papi-papi chant. he waved his helmet and turned around to face everyone.

Amy said...

Tek, you are not going to play four more seasons. Forget about it!

allan said...

double steal!

Zenslinger said...

Yesterday's Giants game was exciting in the ninth as they threatened to take the game back. I hope they win today. They're going against Latos but he hasn't been quite as lights out as he was earlier in the season. Jonathan Sanchez, who told the press the Giants would win the division, will start with all the pressure on. Given all the tiebreaking scenarios RS mentioned earlier (which are becoming more and more likely as Atlanta is up 8-2 over Philly), it's possible the Giants will play four games in four cities in four days. (Today's, the two tiebreakers he mentions, and the first game of the NLDS).

Amy said...

Four run lead is nice!

Amy said...

Why all these tie breakers in the NL? Do they not use the same approach as AL where tied records go to the team with the better record against the team with which they are tied?

allan said...

thanks, dumbo!

Amy said...

OK, 7-2!

allan said...

another double steal -- with kalish stealing home.

Kathryn said...

Amy, the extra games are played only to determine a playoff spot. There are three teams vying for two spots in the NL so they may need a playoff to determine which two teams get in.

In the AL, the playoff teams are already known, it's just a matter of positioning. So, no extra games.

allan said...

wait - slappy wasn't ejected?

Amy said...

Thanks, MrsG! I confess---I have not been following the NL at all. It's been a hard enough season for me to keep up with the AL East!

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, Amy. If Atlanta were to lose and SF and SD (in the same divison) were to end up with the same record, SD would take the division and SF the wild card because of their record against each other this year. It's only if you have three teams involved that you have to play extra playoff games.

Nice balloon popping.

Amy said...

Got it, Zen! Thanks!

allan said...

so nice to see lackey dominate when the game means absolutely nothing ...

Amy said...

Hey, Allan, it means SOMETHING. It can prevent the Yankees from being the division winner.

I am just glad to see Lackey pitch well under any circumstance.

nick said...

Hey all.

holy crap, those roads! I've been on some bad ones, but jesus.

Wasn't planning on seeing this game, but emma's sick, so no harvest festival for us. I even consented to watching a moving instead of the game. Fortunately she announced nap time. Watched an inning before I grabbed the laptop. dug those double steals!

nick said...

It's Joba. Let's see his ERA notch up.

Amy said...

Hi Nick. Sorry Emma isn't well, but always nice to see you here!

allan said...

FUCK YEAH!

eat dirt swish!

Amy said...

LOWRIE! Ready for 2011!

nick said...

ouch! 2X!!

Kathryn said...

There's one for the ERA. And maybe Swisher hurt in the process.

Double Dong Day for JEDI!

nick said...

Double-dong Jedi... for that XXX Star Wars remake.

Kathryn said...

Allan, what did Slappy do?

allan said...

was called out on an 0-2 pitch in the 6th that was WAY outside. he barked and i thought the ump tossed him out.

nick said...

Hi Amy. It's a bummer, but she's suffering for the good of the game. Or something.

Amy said...

That clearly was outside.

allan said...

... and now drew gets similarly fucked by the ump.

nick said...

First A-Rod and now Drew. no respect. but way out on both.

Kathryn said...

Oh, thanks.

This ump likes double pumping and emphatically calling those third strikes. JD's was way outside too.

Rob said...

allan said...

lowrie better push scutaro onto the bench next spring.

Rob said...

In other news, what the fuck was that, Rungeeeeeeee?

Kathryn said...

So it's looking like this game won't come down to Pap.

Amy said...

I am starting to agree that we need electronic means of calling or checking balls and strikes.

Zenslinger said...

Lowrie hitting his second HR of the day off of JtC is something I would have chosen for the last day of the season.

Jed's OPS (in only 150 PAs or so) is going to be through the roof at the end of the season.

OK, I'm a little obsessed with Jed's OPS. I really think he could be an elite hitter.

Amy said...

Thank goodness for that, MrsG. How many more times can he possibly blow a game before he loses his job?

allan said...

not sure how much of lackey's contract is guaranteed, but if it's not too much, i'd be in favour of having go the whole 9 and maybe blowing out his shoulder.

Amy said...

Although I realize that the last one was not entirely his fault.

allan said...

I am starting to agree that we need electronic means of calling or checking balls and strikes.

Robots -- like Bender.

Rob said...

Have him go the Matt Clement route? I would accept that.

allan said...

zen, i assume you are pulling for the giants this month.

allan said...

WHY THE FUCKING FUCK IS FUCKING BARD UP? JESUS FUCKING PROCTORING CHRIST!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

It's the last game. Does it matter? We aren't saving Bard for tomorrow. But yeah, why not use someone else? Make the game closer, then bring in Papelbon to blow it.

Amy said...

I mean...close it.

allan said...

Cap'n (backwards) K.

Rob said...

Lackey is such a douche.

nick said...

"Fenway stands as one as..." Lackey disappoints them again.

Rob said...

But props for the pitching performance. Where the fuck was he this season? Rhetorical question.

Zenslinger said...

I am pulling for the Giants pretty hard. They'll never be what the Sox are to me, but I have come around to them as my NL team.

I still like the Braves some, and even the Rockies a little, so it gets confusing. I can't really root for any AL team, although there are certainly some I respect more than others.

Atlanta is losing their lead (it's now just 8-7 when it was 8-2), so things could go in the very complicated direction we were talking about earlier.

Zenslinger said...

I have been to Giants games yesterday and Wednesday.

allan said...

"I did not allow that run. My ERA should really be lower than it is."

allan said...

runge - eat shit.

...

hmmm, tying run on deck.

Amy said...

Just as I feared.

Rob said...

I'd take Texas over Minnesota, too, but the Yankees will have their hands full either way. Texas and Minnesota are two excellent teams.

Rob said...

In other news, my shit has indeed not turned purple and does not smell like rainbow sherbet.

Amy said...

Phew.

meunier said...

I'd like to see Wake at least start the 9th.

Amy said...

So...it was good that Bard WAS up and warming.

allan said...

cactus has got to go out with some sasahe.

Amy said...

Nice to have a standing O for Tek. Wish I had been there.

nick said...

a decent shot. would've been nice for tek's last AB to be a homer.

Amy said...

Three more outs to the season...

Zenslinger said...

cactus has got to go out with some sasahe

Heh. Once Tek, always Tek.

nick said...

Hopefully that was our last view of a Sox AB for the season.

allan said...

Three more outs to the season...

Let's hope so.

allan said...

BOT

Amy said...

Did you notice Tek rolled his eyes when Francona called him back?

Amy said...

WTF is HE doing out there?

allan said...

tek called back.

great look on his face, like "oh geez". almost made it to the dugout without smiling.

Amy said...

I was truly hoping NOT to see Papelbon again this season.

Zenslinger said...

Braves win.

nick said...

Posada still wearing his gear?

allan said...

And Lord Lynch, who submitted the worst Red Sox prediction way back in March, wins the contest.

Amy said...

K

One more.

allan said...

bot works well with cash!

bring cash back in '11!!!!

Zenslinger said...

Atlanta is losing their lead (it's now just 8-7 when it was 8-2), so things could go in the very complicated direction we were talking about earlier.

See, I was totally confused when I said this. And no one called me on it. It's the Braves winning that can make this crazy tiebreaker shit happen.

Or the Giants can just win. No score in the 2nd.

Amy said...

His was only the worst because I didn't submit mine! I was going with 85, but didn't want to look like a pessimist!

nick said...

We would never think of you that way.

Amy said...

LOL, Nick.

To be honest, I am not a pessimist usually, just a worrier.

nick said...

MFY still take the division w/ this loss? fuckers.

Amy said...

No, Nick, they can't take the division if they lose.

nick said...

a little more baseball for us.

allan said...

wtf patterson?
try giving more than 35%.

Rob said...

Eric Patterson wasn't ready for the season to end.

allan said...

Hi, Mr. 27. Do your thing.

Amy said...

I think Jeter making the last out would be just dandy.

Rob said...

Dave O'Brien says Patterson error was microcosm of the season. "Expectations and excitement build then fall short." So... BLUE BALLS!

Amy said...

Shit.

nick said...

Paps is the shit.

Amy said...

LOL, Ish.

nick said...

...that amy is referring to.

Amy said...

I am censoring my pessimistic thoughts...!

nick said...

guess he wants just one more save?

Zenslinger said...

Question is, what is the NYY-TB season series at?

TB tied 2-2 with KC.

Amy said...

ONE MORE STRIKE, PLEASE.

Amy said...

TB won the season series with Yankees.

Amy said...

DOn't know the breakdown.

allan said...

never mind - cash sucks ass.

Lord Lynch said...

According to Gameday can I assume the home plate umpire is using the force to call balls and strikes?

Amy said...

OH COME ON.

I hate Papelbon. HATE HIM.

allan said...

oh, for fuck's sake.

Kathryn said...

I am now following this on gdgd and this is almost funny.

allan said...

TB 10-8.

allan said...

so we'll have

lars
patterson
lowrie

in the bottom of the 9th

Amy said...

I will take ARod making the last out.

NOW.

Lord Lynch said...

It's never easy is it?

nick said...

Didn't realize TB had won the season against the MFY. Thought it was the other way 'round.

I'm ready for the season to end NOW.

Amy said...

Bite your tongue, Allan.

Amy said...

OK, DONE!

And done. :(

allan said...

For the 89th (and last) time in 2010, the water is Muddy!!!

nick said...

Amy said...
OK, DONE!

And done. :(

yup.

Amy said...

Allan, thanks for another great season of the blog and threading. And to Laura as well.

Amy said...

Have a great offseason, everyone.

Will be watching some of the post-season, I am sure.

Lord Lynch said...

Your AL East winning....Tampa Bay Rays....

Does it work like that, even if they lose?

Kathryn said...

Dirty water. But clean post season.

allan said...

Yes, it does.

allan said...

Congrats on winning the contest!

What do you want as a prize?

Lord Lynch said...

Hopefully next year I'll put enough away to get MLB TV; times were tough in March/April. Thanks for you guys on the limited occasions I could get on here for the laughs etc.

Remember - the glass is always half-empty!

Amy said...

Congrats, Lord. Glad you won, even if it was because we had a disappointing season.

nick said...

I should just say ditto to everything Amy says ('cept for the Bot stuff...I'm not quite there yet).

Thanks Allan, Laura and all you awesome people who are part of this "family". I felt like a bit of a distant cousin this season, but what a swell group of people.

time to cut back on my cable bill.
