Athletics - 001 101 000 - 3 5 0 Red Sox - 030 201 00x - 6 12 0Lackey (5.2-3-3-2-2, 93) did his job, Carl Crawford hit a three-run bomb (#5) in the second, Adrian Gonzalez followed with a two-run dong (#12) in the fourth, and David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia both went 3-for-4 as the Red Sox swept a three-game series from the A's.
To close it out, Dan Wheeler (eighth inning) and Daniel Bard (ninth) set the A's down in order on only seven and eight pitches, respectively.
In his first three at-bats, Ortiz singled, doubled, and singled. He led off the seventh with a drive deep into the triangle that Coco Crisp, after a very long sprint, snagged with his glove stretched out in front of him. That catch robbed Flo of his first four-hit game since late 2007. It also kept alive a streak that Gary Marbry mentioned in his recent Nuggetpalooza column.
On September 27, 2007, Ortiz went 4-for-4. It was the 12th time in his career he had at least four hits in a game; he has yet to do it a 13th time. Today was his 296th consecutive game in which he had at least four at-bats without getting four hits. It's only two games shy of Rico Petrocelli's Red Sox record of 298 games (1967-1970). Arcane data of this type goes back only to 1950. Brooks Robinson of the Orioles holds the MLB record (558 games, 1965-1970).
Brett Anderson / John Lackey
Lackey (8.01 ERA) returns from the disabled list and makes his eighth start of the season.
In his two starts before being sidelined with a right elbow strain, the Blame Thrower allowed 17 runs, 19 hits, and eight walks in only 10.2 innings; opposing baserunners also stole seven bases in eight attempts. Lackey made one rehab start for Pawtucket, giving up one run in 5.1 innings. His pitch limit today will be approximately 90.
In his last start (May 31), Anderson allowed 10 runs and 11 hits in 5.1 innings to the Yankees. ... He threw eight shutout innings against the Red Sox back on April 19 in Oakland. (Did you know that the actual name of the A's home park is now "Overstock.com Coliseum"?)
AL East: Yankees/Angels at 3:30 PM and Rays/Mariners at 4 PM.

Blame Thrower. I love it.
I think a newspaper writer or blogger in Maine was the coiner of that nickname. (Though I have seen it on Angels discussions boards, too.)

5-4 all-time on June 5th vs. Athletics. 1-1 at home, a DH split in '61. In the win, the pinch-hitter who ended the game for KC: Don Larsen! (He was a .311 hitter in 45 ABs that year.
Bad news: Charlie Moore signs 3-yr contract extension with NESN.
I, yet again, will try to come into this game with a clean slate on Lackey. It won't take much to dirty it, though.
wow, crazy ass DP
FY, how does he do that??
watched original angle and i'd say Lackey didn't touch it. No 1-4-6-3.
Amy, I don't know if you're threading - it's so beautiful out today, I hope you don't see this til later - but I was relieved to see the tornado damage was limited to some spoiled food.
The A's announcers actually are decent I think. I'm stuck with them b/c I am living in their broadcast area.
I think he is learning a lot from EB about going to the opposite field.
Shift that.
Is Ray Fosse on the A's TV? I recall being quite annoyed by him.
CRAW DONG!
CC DONGER
wow that ball just kept on goin'
A big Crawdong
Fosse has said something dumb every game lol.
CRAW!!!
Fosse has said something dumb every game lol.
Fosse has said something dumb every pitch lol.
(More accurate.)
Last week I saw a Horizon League game. This is the west coast equivalent of the Cape Cod league. The game was at the Yuba Gold Sox vs. Alaska Fire. Alaska won after Yuba left their starter in too long.
It's not associated with the Horizon League NCAA conference, commuter airline Horizon Air is the sponsor.
Kouzdong
The Alaska team has an underlying agenda that is not baseball. They are also student missionaries from Baptist schools and similar colleges like Liberty.
Is this the stupid payback for the dong?
Is this the stupid payback for the dong?
Castiglioni and O'Brien think so...they're still talking about it.
just saw the crawford hbp. bit of head hunting.
NESN completely misses a pitch showing the runner
So a warning doesn't mean an auto ejection if you hit again? I didn't know that.
If not for our depleted bullpen, I maybe would have preferred the ejection.
Red Sox to make an anti-bullying video for gay youth
Sam Maden, of Nashua, started the petition late last month after his seventh-grade teacher asked the class to come up with a project that could make a difference in the world. Nice job kid!
Why all the bunting from LBJ? I understand it's situational, but I'd rather have him hitting.
Very cool news, especially since it was started by a 12-year-old! Laura mentioned it in a wmtc post about the Giants and Cubs.
don't bunt in the 4th inning. jesus christ.
Gong
STRUCK WELL!
Yet more evil
Unibrow Dong! So evil.
so much evil, judgment day might really be coming...
As I recall, the scouting report on EB was that he would pepper the wall. That's incorrect...he is scaling the wall!!
I am enjoying having this young gentleman playing on my favourite baseball team.
I saw Bootsy Collins last night at the Fillmore. Quite a show!
I had to look up who Bootsy Collins is. Does that mean I'm out of touch?
I think so, but it may depend on how old you are. I'll let Zen rule on this one.
The Large Father is swinging a hot stick.
Well, Bootsy's about 60, so it's not a matter of being up with the kids!
Our best hitter, Ortiz! Three for three today. You have to wonder if that bunt would have worked out.
The Large Father is swinging a hot stick.
He is also 3-for-3 today.
For a second I think that Bootsy has been involved in some newer songs since his P-Funk days, like that Groove Is In The Heart song, then I think well that may have been awhile ago ... yeah, 21 years ago.
Should be Lackey's last inning, if Tito's mention of 90 was correct. That HBP was #85.
Yeah, it's funny when you think of stuff like Atomic Dog as "recent" P-Funk stuff...1983!
Bootsy has new material (Tha Funk Captial of the World, featuring the tune "Freedumb").
Is that three HBP for Lackey today? Or more?
yes. 3.
Not bad, Lackey. Not bad.
I remember Parliament and Funkadelic and George Clinton (and wow does he look old on his wikipedia page). But I don't remember Bootsy. Anyway, it looks like a fun show. My ex-coworker saw James Brown a few years back. He says it was amazing.
Albers still isn't very good.
Yep, I'll give Lackey a "not bad."
Even Beavis knew Bootsy! (It was that Groove is in the Heart vid they watched.)
Well, you can't really expect much from a non-tender from Baltimore, can you?
Well that explains it...I never watched Beavis!
Ugh. More Albers...price we pay for yesterday.
Albers had the piss-poor performance a little while ago, but other than that, 4 ER in 21 IP.
Yeah, Albers was very solid until that 5-run debacle awhile ago.
Albers's game log.
I guess I should have had more confidence in Albers. The disasters just stand out in memory so much...
ecin hctac, ococ
Ah, good to see that Lackey didn't crap the bed. One out away from a quality start, even...
remy: "that piano starts to get heavy on the back of saltalamacchia as he rounds second"
triple dose of NaCl
OUT???????????
WTF??????????
LBJ coming up saying, "That wasn't even close."
naturally, the ump was totally out of position to make a call. looked like he easily beat it. will have to se the replay.
Yep, easily beat it.
wheeler threw 7 pitches last inning, why not use him here up by 3, and not waste bard?
Sweep! On to New York ...
Dirty water, off day tomorrow, then get the MFY!
Yanks tied at 2 early. Loss means we're tied for first going into the series in NY.
"wheeler threw 7 pitches last inning, why not use him here up by 3, and not waste bard?"
Save sitch, Bard was today's closer. That's how they look at it anyway.

It was great to see them get together and come back like that. The Sox always keep you on the edge of your seat I swear. They have to make everything so difficult. But that's why we love them!
