Tony Blengino of Fangraphs calls the Red Sox the "most interesting" AL contender:
The major league club is talented throughout, with young talent sprinkled around a core of proven but ever-motivated veterans. ... When the inevitable roadblocks present themselves after the season begins, their combination of minor league strength and financial power and flexibility should still give them the ability to be squarely in the conversation for the AL pennant. They aren't going away anytime soon.Eno Sarris tells some incredibly uncomfortable stories about finding his way as an interviewer in a major league clubhouse. ... Tom Ruane of Retrosheet recaps some of the highlights from the 1914-1919 seasons. ... Joe Posnanski examines the myth of Louis Sockalexis and the naming of Cleveland's baseball team.
Former pitcher Jack McDowell plays the guitar - and likes R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck:
When I really started getting into guitar seriously and learning song structure, the early R.E.M. records were a great basis because there wasn't a lot of overdubbing - it was just one guitar part and him playing the song. You could really tune in on what he was doing, His arpeggio style filled out the songs, and that was really how I learned a lot of what I do. ... If I had to rank [their albums], I would go "Lifes Rich Pageant," "Murmur," and then the rest.Same here. With "Fables of the Reconstruction", "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" and "Reckoning" (or "Chronic Town") rounding out the Top 5.

The 'Ed Rice' mentioned in Poz's Sockalexis piece as author of Sockalexis reference material is a former colleague at Eastern Maine Community College, still fighting the good fight to bring into the modern world the last three Maine high schools with Native American themed 'mascots.'

Poz never ceases to amaze--the way he threads the needle in that piece, first puncturing the myth and then giving it a tiny breath of life again. What a writer!
Play Ball!
Buchholz allows a 2-out infield single in the top of the first, but gets Teixeira to foul out to Ross to end the inning.
Just tuned in to the game, and it's Tim Wakefield in the booth! Any chance they'll show some game action?
Vic Torino double!
Shane with the double!
Love the crisp sound of the ball hitting the bat. I've missed that...
Vic Torino double!
Should we start calling him Gran?
Nice whack for Pedey but it's nothing but a loud out
Wow, Big Papi looking slim
Ball in the dirt, Gran to third
CERVELLIBALLA!
I have a feeling that there will be distractions aplenty in the booth tonight. RS Foundation scholars next inning.
Two Sizemores? One too many...
Not related, according to BRef
Booth Distraction Jinx = NYY Dong.
Cervelli hits a moon shot over the left field wall and NESN continues to interview the kid in the booth with nary a mention of what just happened.
Classic...
Dod gamn, do I have to listen to booth conversations all game?
I'm happy for all these kids but I don't give two flips about any of it at the moment.
Cut 'em off - go to commercial!!!
OTT for Hughes B2, 2 Ks
Flat start for BoSox
Son of a... they're going to talk about the Red Sox Scholars program for the ENTIRE game?
Linda Henry stops talking, expecting some comment on the game -- nope!
Small Talk still effing exists?
Oy.
I think this is RS Foundation Day or something ...
Jimmy Fund talk a-comin'.
Yeah, this is an all-night talk-a-thon.
Well, the game is not holding my interest. As expected, I suppose.
With all this chatter, game already in the fifth inning.
So... who starts Opening Day in center field? :-)
Allan, I'm stuggling, too. :-P
Looks like I might get my copy of DLUWT in the mail tomorrow, hooray!
I should stop slagging NESN since we are hoping for some type of publicity when I am in Boston next month.
I muted it when they were talking Home Base ... poop, 3-0?
Buchholz got two outs, then allowed three straight batters to reach
It's only spring training, it's only spring training...
Nava breaks string of 12 straight batters retired, then Xander GIDP
It's only spring training, it's only spring training...
I just noticed Don's shirt has a number 30 on it
30 years of NESN on-air?
Ross on board to start the frame, rally time?
Holt optioned to minors, Herrera on 25 man roster
Pedey drives home two as Don does his impression of Tim Wakefield
*sigh*
NESN in mid-season form -- missing entire Pedroia AB, that results in 2-run double. EXCELLENT!!!
Still waiting to hear Wake call Don "announcer boy"
I'm givong NESN a mulligan there but if they do that in the regular season I'm storming the station
Now just one run game, three innings to go
Hi Guys...I've missed this.
Do they do this every game in the spring?
K: You never finished your watch-and-read FB story re Game 4 ....
The young girl they are interviewing for the RBI program so wants to exit the booth
Wake likes the word "awesome".
I've only caught a few innings this spring but from what I've heard, they spend more time yapping about this and that versus speaking to game action
You're right. It was a terrific way to read/watch. Your descriptions between the quotes are spot-on. Talking about how Dirty Water was barely audible over the din of the crowd. It really was. I never would have picked that up without the book.
I am waiting until this weekend for Game 5. I get everything set up and take my time going through it.
My favorite line so far: p. 119 "They would not sit down for the next four hours."
Jon is coming home in a few weeks. He is looking forward to doing the same.
Watching video of Orsillo taking BP...
Yikes!
Nelson Cruz 6 for 6 against Wake.
2 singles
2 doubles
2 home runs
They would not sit down for the next four hours.
I will admit I guessed on that one! But it's probably pretty accurate. Maybe I would have sat between innings to catch my breath!
Very early in the process I rewatched every game and so have pitch-by-pitch notes.
Nice! You should tweet that to the booth
Nice shot of the right fielder chewing gum like a cow there
Game 5 is favourite of the entire postseason.
Sox down to last three outs, rally time!
3-2 in the 9th?
Off to bed to watch the rest....
...and the three hour infomercial mercifully ends, MFY win
