G56: Athletics 5, Red Sox 4 (11)

Eric Chavez's home run off Kyle Snyder with one out in the bottom of the 11th ended a wild one at 1:55 AM.

It's a little weird to feel so unperturbed by two straight losses, but both this game and Sunday's game against New York were addictive, nail-biting baseball, and perhaps living in these post-2004 times -- and holding a 10+ game lead, of course -- lets me handle a few losses.

Oakland's Mark Ellis hit for the cycle, needing a 10th-inning single to do it. The Red Sox have now lost their only two extra-inning games this season, both to Oakland and both by a score of 5-4 (May 1 was the other game).

David Ortiz and Wily Mo Pena both his solo home runs and Pena's RBI single in the 9th tied the game as Boston rallied to score twice. Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 14 games. ... Birthday boy JC Romero pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the ninth, getting Chavez swinging and Bobby Crosby on a 5-2-3 DP.

Elsewhere in the East, Baltimore and New York lost, Tampa won and the Jays were idle. So we lead Toronto by 10, Orioles by 11, and the Devil Rays and Yankees by 12.5.

***

Julian Tavarez (5.40, 83 ERA+) / Dan Haren (1.64, 262 ERA+)

Lips draws another ace.

Dustin Pedroia was named AL Rookie of the Month for May -- .415/.472/.600, six doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. His batting average for the season is .336.

Fuck yeah, Dustin!

And I think it's time to dirty up someone's ERA.

No, not Lips!

Ron said...

Just saw that at Extra Bases - Dusty batted .609 over the last week with 6 doubles and 6 ribbies over 6 games.

Ron said...

Only 397 comments to go to beat yesterday!

thatdietcokegirl said...

aces wild?

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

Correct me if I'm wrong - but if Dustin is AL rookie of the month - doesn't that make two sox in a row getting that award? Wasn't Okajima AL rookie in April?

I'm off to the game!

GO SOX

Am not worried so much about how Julian will pitch as I am about the Sox Batters.

Anyone know what time they arrived in Cali today? My best guess was at about 12:00 EST today. That makes for a jet lagged team. You have to wonder how much stamina they will have tonight.

Ron said...

White Sox up 5-1 over MFY in the bottom of the 4th.

allan said...

Blame ESPN and MLB for that. I thought there was something in the collective bargaining against this type of travel but obviously I was wrong. The game yesterday should have been played at 12:00 or 1:00 so that the Sox were getting in at a reasonable time instead of around 8:00 a.m. this morning.

Ron said...

Yanks still down 5-1 to the Sox. Rays beat the Royals 4-2. Baltimore is in Seattle and starts at 10:00.

Should be an interesting night.

thatdietcokegirl said...

they can handle it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

6-1. someone homered off some fatty of theirs.

Ron said...

Haha, I have ChiSox-Yanks muted on ESPN waiting for the important game to start. Every time I glance up, the MFY are making a pitching change. Mike Myers now.

Whoa, wild pitch. Nevermind, inning over.

Still 6-1 White Sox.

allan said...

konerko solo shot made it 6-0. off the immortal chris britton.

mfy starter desalvo went 1.1 tonight.

second place jays off tonight.

s1c said...

Romero's 31st birthday tonight. Maybe he will pull a Julian and get a win!

allan said...

shit , stuck with fox guys in oakland, with ray fosse.

s1c said...

Sox have a chance to get over .500 in Monday games. A win would make them 4 and 3.

Ron said...

Travis Buck for the all-animal team.

MFY on their last out. Garland went 8.1 for the White Sox.

thatdietcokegirl said...

go sox.

Ron said...

Oops, stupid ESPN scoreboard page was wrong.

6-2 White Sox, one out in the top of the 9th.

Ron said...

6-3, now two outs.

thatdietcokegirl said...

shit warning track fly-out. damn. would have been gone at fenway.

thatdietcokegirl said...

YES!!! PAPI!!! FINALLY MAN ;P

Benjamin said...

Seven pitches, one swing.

allan said...

cookie monster!!!

mfy were up 1-0 tonight, blew the lead and lost.

Ron said...

6-4. MFY still alive.

thatdietcokegirl said...

c'mon jenks gd it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

k finally.

Ron said...

Ok, finally over, MFY lose. Did somebody say something about Papi?

allan said...

oop -- posted that and mfy were not gone, but as the tying run with judas on first, CI becomes mr. 27 yet again.

totally tangible.

Benjamin said...

Is Sterling on suicide watch after an almost-comeback like that?

allan said...

wmp in cf, not coco. was that made before start of game? gameday has crisp out there.

s1c said...

Remy just stated that WMP was a late late addition.

Ron said...

Crisp out with upset stomach right before the game according to Tina Cervasio

allan said...

coco sick stomach.

so was pena in the starting lineup or is he a sub for coco?

damn it, i want an answer!!!

gameday still has crisp in cf

Ron said...

Not much detail so far, but NESN said "before" the game.

Ron said...

Don: "Maybe that's why Julian is always pointing around the infield."

HAHAHAHAHA.

allan said...

gameday just put him in as the starter, but i never trust mlb.

Ron said...

Now Don has said the WMP is batting in "Coco's spot," which is also specifically vague.

thatdietcokegirl said...

guh still no outs. 2-1 a's. misplayed by wmp in right.

allan said...

hard hop on a ball that was slicing. i won't rip wmp on that one.

Zenslinger said...

Some good hitting by the A's there and tough breaks for Julian. Well done to draw that walk by fouling off some good pitches; the single goes right where Cora had been (why did he go towards second?); then the hit.

Argh.

allan said...

shades of the tigers tv guys as the oakland fsn guys get a bit too giddy on that triple. just call the game.

two nice outs to third to hold the runner. limit the damage who-lian.

allan said...

cora covering on a hit and run. which worked perfectly.

2-1 aint shit. lets go bats.

allan said...

sexy looking good in the 3rd, getting swisher on a fb and johnson on a slider down and in.

allan said...

but now two line drive singles have two a's on. let's get kotsay.

allan said...

three innings

tavarez pitches: 20-30-22 = 72
haren pitches: 23-15-13 = 51

allan said...

so haren has pitched 7+ innings and allowed 4 or fewer hits in each of his last 4 starts coming in to tonight?

ummm, that's pretty good.

allan said...

manny, yook and werd in order in the 4th,

everyone else gone to bed?

Zenslinger said...

Not in San Francisco.

Well, lying in bed watching mlb.tv.

Ron said...

I'm still here, but fading fast. Need to pace myself, it's a long road trip.

allan said...

mark ellis
2-run triple in 2nd
solo hr (lined lf line) in 4th

eliis 3, sox 0

allan said...

i miss the west coast trips from the late 70s. games in every city: usually 3 in oakland, 3 in anaheim, 3 in seattle.

mega-expansion, interleague, etc. makes that impossible now.

Ron said...

Nice catch Lips.

thatdietcokegirl said...

what do you mean, one series after another?

allan said...

not only the late 70s ... but that's when i was sneaking my little yellow transitior radio next to my pillow.

it is nice to not have to get up for a weekday job when these games are on. enjoy the evening, then settle in for a game at 10!

allan said...

tdcg, me?

the sox (and other east teams) would make 2 trips out west all year, play series against all 3 west teams and then fly back. now the schedule demands 2 game series and criss crossing all over the place.

you'd have almost two weeks of weekday games at 10 pm. maybe 10:30.

Zenslinger said...

Or hurrying home from school to see playoff games, eh?

(That was not necessarily a Canadian "eh".)

thatdietcokegirl said...

runs runs runs. plz?

allan said...

Or hurrying home from school to see playoff games, eh?

i did that for the 78 playoff game, but that was it. :<(

Zenslinger said...

WMP is helpless not to swing for strike three.

thatdietcokegirl said...

redsock, yes.

i just wondered what you meant by the west coast trips and the games in every city thing. like were they all in a row?

thatdietcokegirl said...

i feel. like we're gonna lose this. lol. sorry, but i do.

allan said...

yeah, you can check out retrosheet for team's game logs, like the 1977 red sox here (2 trips in mid-may and latejuly/early aug)

how about "run plz"?

allan said...

haren has been pedroesque this year, so if we can't zap him quick with a few runs or run his pc up, we likely won't do much. and we're not doing either.

thatdietcokegirl said...

mm.

Zenslinger said...

Our big boys are up and Julian's kept it reasonable. But, admittedly advantage A's.

allan said...

right here, manny!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

of course we can still do it.

allan said...

phooey. still 3-1. still very doable.

allan said...

fucking ellis.

triple in 2nd
home run in 4th
double in 6th

allan said...

Haren finds a WMP -- Weapon of Mass Production!

Ron said...

Wily Mo!!!

Ron said...

How is the A's bullpen?

allan said...

quite good pen.

Zenslinger said...

Pretty good. Their closer (Street) is hurt and Duscherer is not having a good year. But Embree has found himself again and they have some other good arms in there.

Zenslinger said...

Donnelly looks great.

Pinero we don't need right now.

allan said...

hinske whiffs.

should tito have gone to the bench now? lowell, lugo, tek sitting there.

thatdietcokegirl said...

danny boy. yr too good. stop that ;p

Joe Grav said...

come on boys......

We can't let this turn into a minislump.

I really wanted embree to come in, hahahaha

thatdietcokegirl said...

lol it's not a slump. we're up against a great pitcher who's just coming into his prime.

allan said...

nice walk there, joe-l.

allan said...

looks like we get hombre in the 9th.

allan said...

idiot oakland annc.

they call ellis's HR a no-doubter, tho when he hit it, they weren't sure it had the lift to clear the fence. one guy was surprised.

then right after showing his triple to rcf, like 5 seconds later, they say he's been pulling everything tonight.

allan said...

FLO -- 1st pitch double down the rf line.

lets go MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

stupid last inning run. thx pinero! c'mon manny!!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

wth. manny you gotta swing at that.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yay tek!!
gah..game would been tied. gksjdfj.

c'mon one more!

thatdietcokegirl said...

OMG!!!!!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

TIE GAME!! WMP!!!!

Ron said...

that was huge.

allan said...

fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!

tel flair scored flo
pr crisp off with the pitch as pena doubles to the rcf gap.

wpoooooohooooo

4-4

thanks embree!!!!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

ok who's in for the 9th.

allan said...

(only a single for wmp)

extra cripsy hustle!!!

allan said...

no more pineiro, pls.

allan said...

god damn it -- no balls, joe-l.

thatdietcokegirl said...

shit who else could we go to?

ugh. lead-off walk. niiice D;

allan said...

looks like jeemer and bot are not available.

romero up as pineiro fucks things up.

thatdietcokegirl said...

jc man. wake up!!

allan said...

fucking iron glove hinske.

fucking christ.

i have 0% faith in romero.

well, okay, 3%.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i have about 1.5%. PROVE ME WRONG B-DAY BOY.

allan said...

pineiro: 1+ inning (8 batters faced), 0 hits, 3 walks.

sigh.

thatdietcokegirl said...

nice little popup to start. then a dp. or ya know, strike out the side. lol;(

thatdietcokegirl said...

ball 1. deja vu with this dude.

Joe Grav said...

this sucks!!!!!! what a kick in the balls, thanks tito!

thatdietcokegirl said...

how. why. why is he a ml pitcher. he cannot throw strikes.

allan said...

alright, time for some FCs.

x-2-3 DP?

thatdietcokegirl said...

strike 2. c'mon man!!!!!!

Joe Grav said...

that was really important.

thatdietcokegirl said...

omg. hells yess. stayin alive...

allan said...

K!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, that's 1. DP PLS.

Joe Grav said...

you blow romerinero

allan said...

5-2-3!!

HAD IT ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron said...

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!

Joe Grav said...

I think I just had a Joy-Gasm

thatdietcokegirl said...

omg. my heart just stopped.

whoa. just whoa.

;D!!

allan said...

wait ... we're still tied.

on to the 10th ....

thatdietcokegirl said...

this is awesome!!!! i so..omg. so had no faith in him. hearts for you JC!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

wait ... we're still tied.

on to the 10th ....

oh yeah. hmm.

must change that immediately.

Ron said...

Didn't we lose to the A's in our only other extra innings game this year?

Payback time.

allan said...

hookers and blow for the birthday boy!!!!!

now -- we better win this fucker.

Ron said...

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear JC
Happy birthday to you

Sir Jahmez said...

Redsock - way to call it!

allan said...

sox in extras this year:

0-1, loss to oakland 5-4 on may 1

allan said...

now who? snyder?

no word from fsn on whoisout there.

allan said...

pedroia 13 game hit streak on the line

allan said...

romero still has his jacket on.

hmmmm

DP -- HIT!!!! 14.

thatdietcokegirl said...

aw yeah base hit!

Ron said...

There's DP's hit.

No comment on the bullpen on NESN either, so I'm thinking more Romero.

thatdietcokegirl said...

calero coming in.

allan said...

i would totally love something like 20-21 innings tonight.

thatdietcokegirl said...

haha why? wide awake?

allan said...

actually if it goes that long, it has to go 27 -- breaking the mlb record of 26.

(i did see 22 innings in montreal in 1989. 1-0 dodgers!)

allan said...

no work to get up for tomorrow ...

so play on!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

christ. out by like 5 feet.

allan said...

damn it -- did dp get a late jump on that one, even with 2 outs?

dead duck.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i'm with you! i just hope we come out on top after all that.

Sir Jahmez said...

This game is a test of wills - and if we can beat them this tired - WE ROCK!

Joe Grav said...

DeMarlo Sveum

Zenslinger said...

Why did they send him?

Getting late even for the West Coast -- especially for those of us who want to go to the game tomorrow!

Ron said...

Snyder up in the pen

thatdietcokegirl said...

it was grabbed quickly and thrown in by kotsay.
snyder is warming.

allan said...

got to send him with 2 outs.

figured it would be closer, but a good relay i guess. crosby threw a chest high strike to kendall.

Ron said...

Ellis gets the cycle. pffftt.

allan said...

i don't think i've ever seen a game with a cycle in it!

DP PLS.

Joe Grav said...

aaaaaand a cycle. I didn't even know he was 75% of the way there.... maybe I just forgot, but I don't recall them mentioning it? w/e... come on J.C. "Jesus Christ" Romero

Ron said...

Seattle beat Baltimore 7-4

Ron said...

the cycle was mentioned each time Ellis came up on NESN (after he hit the HR in the 4th obviously). That seems like a long time ago though. I think I feel asleep for a little while at one point.

Ron said...

(after he hit the HR in the 4th obviously)

Sorry, after the 6th inning double.

allan said...

2 outs. 2nd and 3rd. a little nervous.

thatdietcokegirl said...

lol this game is crazy!! onto the 11th..damn ;D

allan said...

snyder holds on to the ball!!!!!!

fucking A.

Ron said...

Collisions at 1B make me nervous all the sudden.

Zenslinger said...

Wow, long pause there while the ump made sure Synder hung onto the ball.

There's something about being a Sox fan and weird plays at first that makes the anxiety rear its head.

thatdietcokegirl said...

that was close.

Zenslinger said...

Heh heh, we are of one mind.

Joe Grav said...

the snyda play was nervewracking. c'mon, yookie

Rick said...

These guys have got to be tired.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yook.

allan said...

still plenty of "yoooook"s in oakland.

Joe Grav said...

cmon coke co

Rick said...

c'mon coco

Joe Grav said...

boo

Joe Grav said...

now that's the Milly Whoa we know and love

allan said...

any chance of us getting a nice 1-2-3 inning on these guys? hmmm?

thatdietcokegirl said...

i need a donut. but i don't have one.
a fig newton will have to do...

Joe Grav said...

put in wakefield

jk

allan said...

How about a bagel?

Ron said...

i need a beer. but i don't have one.
a mike's hard lemonade leftover from a party last summer will have to do...

allan said...

every other batter, the oakland tv guys are begging for a HR to "send us home"

it's getting annoying.

Joe Grav said...

that is a swift kick in the groin area

allan said...

now it's REALLY fucking annoying.

Ron said...

well that sucks.

thatdietcokegirl said...

damn.
just damn.

(i'd love a bagel)

Zenslinger said...

Was a pretty amazing game, though.

allan said...

only tampa gains ground on us -- i can deal with that.

thatdietcokegirl said...

chavez looked all tired about it lol.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yep. no big deal. we battled hard as always. that matters alot :)

night all :)

allan said...

time to update the score and hit the hay. thanks for sticking around for this one.

Jackie said...

Just got back from the game - towards the end there were probably more Sox fans than Oakland fans, at least in the lower seats where I was. Definitely an awesome game, except for the very end. Not bad for our B squad + 5th starter + bullpen "scrubs", I'd say.

And just so you know, Wily Mo's HR looked even more monstrous in person. Holy shit.
