G62: Diamondbacks 5, Red Sox 1

The Return of Mike Timlin was everything I expected it to be.

Red Sox trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, men on first and second, no outs. Timlin's first pitch is bunted out in front of the plate. Timlin grabs it and throws over Kevin Youkilis's head at first base. It's a three-base error, the two inherited runs score (surprise!) and Arizona is now up 4-1.

His first pitch!

Timlin then walks the next guy -- no sign of Francona, of course -- but then gets the next two batters on pop-ups. However, a single brings in a run that actually gets charged to Timlin, but because of his three-base error a few minutes ago, it's unearned.

So, yeah, he turned a tight 2-1 game into a 5-1 hole in the top of the ninth, thus virtually assuring a loss, but look on the bright side -- he lowered his ERA by 64 points.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.63, 96 ERA+) / Randy Johnson (3.78, 116 ERA+)

Redsox.com:
Matsuzaka made his seventh quality start when he gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings in a 2-0 loss to the Oakland A's on Tuesday. The bad news is that he threw 130 pitches, the most by a Red Sox hurler since last April.

The [Big Eunuch] allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings in his last start. He has hit his stride of late throwing six shutout innings in his start before against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Johnson missed the start prior to the one in Philly with tendinitis in his left forearm, but it has not bothered him since.
Gordon Edes:
Matsuzaka took batting practice Friday, Japanese reporters recording his every swing, and drove a ball that hit the 413-foot sign in left-center, about the same spot that J.D. Drew hit one a little farther for a home run that night.
Ian Browne:
According to one member of the Japanese media, Matsuzaka had 11 hits -- including two homers -- in 22 swings.
Japan uses the DH, but in two years of batting in interleague games, Matsuzaka went 4-for-19 (.211) with one homer and three RBIs.

who's the espn game tonight? maybe i should settle in with family guy and american dad.

Well this certainly sucks the doo-dah-day. I leave for 10 minutes and come back to a 5-1 score with 50 on the hill.

We really shouldn't have Judased JC from the team.

allan said...

He's 41, which, strangely enough, is the IQ of anyone who thinks he can help this team.

What makes me sad is that Dice is going to get the loss that Timlin so richly deserves.

laura k said...

Good point re loss. More proof of the stupidity of W/L. Not that we need any more.

Crap.

allan said...

Fucker still lowered his ERA by 64 points (6.23 to 5.59).

laura k said...

The number one word I do not want to hear or read tomorrow: footsteps.

laura k said...

"50 on the hill"

Are we sure that's not his age? Not that there's anything wrong with it. If you're sitting at home watching.

allan said...

Gameday has Donnelly's and Lopez's runs Timlin allowed as earned and Timlin's run as unearned.

laura k said...

gameday = stupid

Cubs/Braves, re: ESPN. Think I'll watch the Tonys.

allan said...

tito should let timlin bat.

laura k said...

OK, here comes the biggest comeback of the season...

laura k said...

Oh never mind. Lugo's up.

9casey said...

This why Papi has to bat in the 7th.

If he could tie or put the team ahead it changes the whole bullpen scenario.....
Francona is managing like he is still in the NL

allan said...

hinske walks.

rally time?

Wasn't mothers day the biggest?

laura k said...

He is in the NL today, no?

laura k said...

Mother's Day, more runs, yes. This seems even less probable, tho.

laura k said...

Two on... come on boys, keep it going...

allan said...

i just realized that a grand slam ties the game.

laura k said...

Coco, I've been trying to like you... give me a reason...

laura k said...

(I mean besides the glove.)

laura k said...

piffle

stupid pitcher is celebrating. big whoop, you hold a 4-run lead.

laura k said...

See y'all tuesday. Enjoy the off night.

thatdietcokegirl said...

ok the sensations of totally thinking we could have won that despite the irritating deficit was nice.

but..yeah.

allan said...

pfft.

day off monday and then the rockies at fenway.

Shit happens. Lead-off walks, 3 errors, another no-show by the offense. A domed stadium that allows a patch of sun to shine through the roof. I wonder if that's what a no-bid Haliburton construction job looks like?
Timlin has a long plane ride to talk to his maker about things happening for a reason and other responsibility-evading topics.

allan said...

Gameday corrected itself. All 3 of the 8th inning were unearned.

tim said...

Timlin used to be the shit...then Joe Carter homered off Mitch Williams in Game 6.

Now he's just shit.

tim said...

Another one of those totally irrelevant references:

Exacting a tiny bit of revenge for the 1980 World Series, they took two of the three interleague games in Philadelphia's first visit to Kansas City since beating the Royals in that Fall Classic.

I'm sure thats what was the motivating factor for KC in this series. They were bitter about a world series 27 years ago that absolutely no one on either side had any part in, at a time where all of the players were between not even existing yet and little league. AP dolts.

Amazing how that works.

I wonder if that's what a no-bid Haliburton construction job looks like?

Sure, just without the dead bodies strewn about.

tim said...

HOLY SHIT!!!!!

Archived game is up, they cut out the part where he said he didn't know the D-Backs beat the Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I go to the top of the 6th and it begins with the tail end of the conversation (discussing the co-MVPs) with 1 out in the inning. That's when it STARTS.

tim said...

Nevermind, if you go to the whole game it's there. Go to the 2:49:30 part.

Alright, nevermind. It was a very piss-poor attempt at sarcasm. I had missed the other announcers quiet "sarcastic" remark, "By the way did you hear we beat the yankees in 2001?"

allan said...

Heh - I was also coming back to also say that Varitek's two-pitch AB is cut out of the top of the 6th. The breaks aren't very clean between innings, but Tek's AB is cut.

You're saying it's in the entire game file.

So this is a big nothing?

Seemed too good to be true.

(Coulda had another "sock" incident.)

tim said...

Yeah, I just looked up the announcers ...it's Mark Grace, the former DBack...

They were talking about people liking/disliking interleague, then Yankee/Arizona fans will probably enjoy the WS rematch this week...then quietly Grace goes "did you know, we beat the Yankees in 2001" or something. I must have tuned out for that, or not picked up on the sarcasm, but hearing it again it's clear they're trying to be idiots and he's obviously not that big of an idiot that he wouldn't know that.

allan said...

I went to 2:49, but that's it's the last out of the top of the 7th.

No talk of 2001.

Rats.

tim said...

Hmm, if i go to the complete game for me it's at 2:49 (I posted up there 2:49:30, but thats the end of the convo)...do you have MLBTV premium or regular?

Just scroll through the game and pick it up after 'Tek bounces out to Johnson and he barehands it and the announcers have an orgasm.

allan said...

Premium.

tim said...

yeh, i have regular

You all may have a deep hatred for Mike Timlin, But he is not the reason we lost that game.

Most games are lost by players ,this was lost by the manager..

You can not send Cora up to BUNT in the 7th....and not bring Ortiz up and hope Lugo or Crisp can get a single in that situation.

Because if Ortiz gets to pinch hit in the 7th and ties or puts us ahead..Timlin doesnt see the light of day.......

Fuck it its over ,but this lineup needs to change when your leadoff guy has has more strikeouts then hits and runs combined for the month of June.

tim said...

but this lineup needs to change when your leadoff guy has has more strikeouts then hits and runs combined for the month of June.

yup, thats what we've been saying for a few weeks now. its terrible. i'll post my proposed lineup again for reference (flipped #1 and 2 due to a previous discussion in a thread here)...

Youkilis
Pedroia
Ortiz
Ramirez
Lowell
Drew
Varitek
Lugo
Crisp

Lowell and Drew being interchangeable...For Wake starts, move Lugo and Crisp up and put Dougie in the #9 spot. I'm not going to waste my time going through modifications for games played in NL parks and the farce of interleague play.

I really think our RBI and HR leader should be hitting #5, I thought he should've been hitting #5 all last year too and with the way he's playing this year, it just supports my theory even more.

todays lineup featured two of the shittiest OBP guys at the top, as always. francona better have left the peyote in arizona and put some sense into his lineup when they get back to boston.

timlin didn't lose the game - he put it out of reach. IMO, that was the worst bullpen collapse of 2007 and it stung. i have had faith in our BP this year (save Piniero and Romero), but timlin just brings a whole new type of shakiness to this 'pen that i don't like.

enough rambling for the night, gotta sneak in a bit of studying before the exam tomorrow.

later all.

laura k said...

:-)

laura k said...

I only have a "deep hatred" of Mike Timlin because he sucks.

I agree with the other issues (lineup, bunting). But Timlin is a menace with inherited runners, and as Tim said, he put the game out of reach. There's no getting around it.

i like the headlines most of the time on boston dirt dogs, but this one is so lame:
"Daisuke Mediocre: Is He Quickly Becoming a .500 pitcher?"

plz. his last two starts he's pitched (more than) well enough to win only giving up 2 runs in each and striking out 15.
just bugs me.

lol i hate off-days.
