Yankees - 000 002 100 - 3 6 0After a 2:11 delay, Papelbon came in and struck Rodriguez out on three fastballs. On the 0-2 pitch, the two runners took off, which may have distracted Slappy, who whiffed on the 97 high heat.
Red Sox - 000 103 000 - 4 9 0
In the 9th, Giambi (ccbb) struck out swinging, Posada (csfbbff) struck out swinging, and Cano (bsbfbffff) grounded out weakly to Pedroia.
26 pitches in all for Bot, who will likely have tomorrow night off. In six innings this season, he has 12 strikeouts (and only 1 walk).
***
Rain delay with 2 outs in the top of the 8th. Cabrera on 2nd and Abreu on 1st. Slappy at bat and Papelbon in from the pen. He hasn't thrown any pitches.
Beckett looked great once again, allowing only one baserunner through the first five innings (and only 47 pitches). Manny gave him a 1-0 with a long home run to left-center in the fourth.
Beckett faltered in the sixth when Molina and Gonzalez both singled to start the inning. Two sacrifices - a Damon bunt and a Cabrera liner to center -- brought in the first run and a wild pitch brought in the second.
Down 2-1, the Sox finally slapped Mussina around. (They had two singles in each of the first two innings off Mussina, but two double plays and an outfield assist let him off the hook.) With one out in the sixth, Ellsbury singled to left and Pedroia doubled off the Wall. Ortiz -- in a prime spot to break out of his current slump -- struck out. Girardi came out to chat and the Yankees elected to pitch to Manny. Mussina threw an 88 mph fastball in the heart of the strike zone and Being hit it to deep right-center for a two-run double. Bruney came in from the pen and Youkilis greeted him with a single to put Boston up 4-2.
Beckett started the seventh by walking Slappy on four pitches. He got Giambi to GIDP 453, but then gave up a single to Posada and wild pitched him to second. Cano doubled off the Wall and New York crept to within one run.
In the top of the 8th, Okajima got two quick outs on four pitches, but then walked Cabrera on four pitches and surrendered a single to Abreu. Papelbon came jogging in -- and the tarp came out.

Mike Mussina (3.09, 133 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (9.64, 45 ERA+)
Sean McAdam, on the bullpen:
After last night's game, the bullpen owned a collective 6.17 ERA, and as high as that figure is, it was deceiving. Subtract the work of closer Jonathan Papelbon and set-up man Hideki Okjima, and the bullpen's ERA zooms to 8.88.Terry Francona, on Jed Lowrie:
If he's here for two weeks, one thing we don't want him to do is sit every day. That's no good. That kind of gets in the way of his development. We'll probably work him in a couple of times a week over there at the minimum.Alex Cora referred to his elbow injury as "weird" and something he's "never felt before". He said he should return to his daily routine today.
Michael Silverman, Herald: "Since 1901, the Red Sox and Yankees franchises have been duking it out." The Yankees did not exist in 1901, though I suppose that technically the franchise did. The American League did not have a team in New York until 1903, when the Baltimore Orioles moved and became the Highlanders.
David Ortiz: 0-for-13, 1-for-25, 3-for-39 (.077). Am I worried? Not at all. As I said recently in comments, I'm worried about Flo's bat like I'm worried about the sun rising in the morning. However, I am curious, should his slump continue, if he'll hear any boos at Fenway? I've heard Yankee fans boo Rivera and Jeter, so any insane behavior is possible.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 407 Newer› Newest»Does Tito give Gonzalez to MDC and then go to Jeemer with LH Damon/Abreu? Or more from MDC?
Jeemer threw 8 picthes yesterday. Might not use him. Prob have MDC start and if he needs Bot for 4 outs, he'll do that.
Big rains headed for Fenway:
Link
we'll be up 5 runs by then, it won't matter...
Mayor McBBs
lightning flash here.
Pedro or David oughta blast one right here to give the umpires a better decision to make.
Raining in Allston. Heavy rain up along Soldiers Field Rd.
Thunder on the radio.
Heh. Abreu and Cano give each other dirty looks.
It'll be raining on the other side of the break.
I love this new, closeup radar.
And just as I say this, the green and yellows have overspread Fenway.
As the sun comes out right here.
bad timing for work. boo.
Slügo!
Hi all. Just got in. Heard most of the game in the car (except when chatty daughter called; luckily that was when the Yankees scored).
Have to catch up with the threads, but not til after the game.
Laura, I did see your comment about wondering how Harvey and I were doing at the game. We had our usual pre-game argument over something stupid and unrelated, and then we did just fine during the game. Of course, he could be happy last night; let's see how he does tonight, if the Sox hold on!
ON FIRE IN THE FIELD!
I am LOVING Drew in 2008!
Rain looking nasty out there, but if like last night, it actually looks a lot worse than if feels.
They wouldn't keep playing, would they? That rain's going to get heavier and heavier. But it shouldn't last too long.
SHIT, get these guys out.
We know Oki can take care of--- oh, whoops. We know Pap can take care of A-Rod.
Fox may have its hands on the Steinbrenner weather machine. It keeps pouring here, and I'm right near Fenway, yet it never really pours there.
Today, I mean.
Must've been a beautiful day out your way, right Amy? Over here at the coast it's been in the 40s and 50s. You go 50 miles inland and it was 70°.
Uncle Joe described this as one of the strangest days down there that he's seen, weatherwise.
Umpires have called for the tarp.
TARP.
A delay-guess it is harder than last night. Oh well.
Call the game now...?
Bonus coverage on FOX... D-Backs/Rox game. Rox are getting rocked 10-1.
delay. good. i'll kepe working then.
Paps bumps fists with the Boston blue as he trots in from the pen with two down in the eighth and it looks like we may get a win... except the umpires give us a delay.
Damn it.
Well then. Bruins pre-game it is.
Kathryn Tappen is looking good tonight. Just thought you'd like to know.
Aw man, I'd forgotten the Bruins exist! (ish, you know at this point this is partly to get your goat, as you're like an e-brother to me.... you and tim)
(Do people still say "get your goat"?)
Kathryn Tappen is looking good tonight.
Consider yourself flashed!
Heh. Bruins do exist, but not for long.
It's been a long time since I heard "get your goat". Sounds kind of awkward.
get your goat? haha what?
yeah, def just switched to CBC for some HNIC pregame. damn, i wanted to see some quick snuffage.
oh and re: my sporadic posts, couple months ago i dropped my laptop right on the wireless card (this things like 8 years old...no functioning USB ports....durable as hell tho) so the internet was connected at like 1mbps instead of the usual 54. i gave up and just decided to watch. now im on the wife's comp:P
Rockies going for the 2-out, 9th inning, 8-run rally. 10-3 Dbacks.
Tim, you need to get a new computer...we miss you!
Wideman out as well, uh-oh...I'll be shocked if the Bruins play 5 in this series. I'll be awed if they play 7...and if they move on to the next round....I don't know what I'll think. My head will probably explode.
Carey Price is an amazing goalie though, I had the pleasure of watching him sweep into Hamilton in time for the AHL playoffs last year and dominate their way to the championship.
heh, well back home i have a decent enough one. i'm on the road right now though, so unless i want to sit at the desk (the actual network cable is like 1 foot long out of the wall) i'm basically screwed!
man, this sucks. its 12:45am in Germany. I'm exhausted but this is too much of a cliffhanger. Any chance they'll call it?
And I miss the ol regular gamethreading and you guys too. For one, it was a weird start to the year, and I'm all over the place right now. Haven't been able to settle into a routine but soon hopefully!
i really hope they don't call it. if it was reversed, i'd be hella pissed.
i wanna see some snuffage!
and did i hear correctly back a few innings ago - Beckett hit 103 with a FB?
can you imagine if they call this game -- mfy fans' heads would explode. :>)
I don't think so, future. Thunderstorm looked pretty small. It was just coming down too heavy to play at that time.
and did i hear correctly back a few innings ago - Beckett hit 103 with a FB?
Gameday has had his FB at 96-97, some at 98.
Hmmm. I know if I go to sleep they'll lose. I'm so torn. What's it looking like? I only have MLB.tv which is just showing a stills montage of men pulling tarps and Mr. Met walking around with an umbrella.
Sounds like the game will be resuming shortly.
Amalie will keep us updated. last post is "time called at 6:22".
There's another thunderstorm on the way, but there's a tiny window where they might be able to finish the game without another delay. But they'd need to hurry it up.
hmm, must've just been Joe Fuck being a goof then.
i just got goosebumps when i heard the Hockey Night in Canada song...best sports song ever. In fact, I think it's probably the best weekly sports broadcast out of all of the big ones (FOX/ESPN weekly baseball, Sunday/monday football)...i dunno, it's just well put together and a blasty blast.
Kessel out, Sobotka in...interesting switch.
Montreal looks like it'd be one hell of a good time to take in a hockey game live.
I'm done with the hockey posts. Probably leaving shortly anyways, going to a local establishment for some hockey, beers and food.
Sox game should be on there too at least, if it doesn't finish by then...
Montreal looks like it'd be one hell of a good time to take in a hockey game live.
That girl has a good voice. Even above the jeers from the crowd. But yeah. I think a game there would be electric, and amazing. Unless, of course, you were wearing your B's shirt and hat.
There's no scenario I'd rather have than making 21,000 people shut up.
Yeah, anthem girl was good. she looked nervous as hell.
ok so i lied about it being my last hockey post. damn rain delays.
Unless, of course, you were wearing your B's shirt and hat.
I wonder how it compares to wearing a Sox hat pre-04 at the Toilet.
Alright, work is done for the moment. How's about some baseball?
I posted (I think) "Any news?" to AB at the Globe's blog, but it hasn't appeared yet.
Warm ups right now going on in the bullpen. Hawkins and the hut.
Tarp coming off, and the conflict i hoped would be avoided is now occurring.
New York bullpen is warming up. Play should begin soon.
OK, Tim, I feel better knowing your absence is due to a road trip, not a permanent problem.
At least I got in a quick dinner during the rain delay.
I wish FOX would stop showing ARod's HR off Papelbon. Pissing me off.
Tarp is coming off the field, it looks like.
Going to start game again at 7:30, according to Fox.
I posted (I think) "Any news?" to AB at the Globe's blog, but it hasn't appeared yet.
I've posted a few comments on there that never went up. One of them was towards some complete idiot, I forget what exactly it was about but it was bad. It was a clean post, no swearing but they didn't put it up. I clearly pwned the person who posted the moronic comment (i think it had something to do with a menial stat, like pitcher wins)
Amalie Benjamin, 7:11 PM:
The rain has stopped here at Fenway Park, and the crowd cheered as the grounds crew came on to the field to deal with the tarp.
Though we were told in the press box that the team had not been cleared to play, the tarp is being folded and rolled up. It's coming off the field, though it seems that there might be more bad weather on the way.
****
i didn't think anyone commented there, but i see 5 in the lineup post.
wow, Bruins looking waaaaaaay better tonight. so many chances on that PP.
yeah ive come to the conclusion that the hockey posts will stop when the beisbol starts (or i leave, whichever comes first)
Tim, all your comments get put through no matter what. Amy too. We don't censor any regular poster's comment. If it didn't appear, it's a blogger issue, not the Moderation Thought Police. I promise.
Now back to work/game, bye.
Oh shit, you weren't even talking about this blog. Ignore me.
Carry on.
I was referring to the extra bases blog, L...not here, i know you guys are good :)
Yeah, I saw that, but after I had already hit the trigger. :)
The other day a commenter accused us of putting our own comments through but not others. This was not during a game thread, just during the day, when no one had checked the mod screen for a bit. We were like, sheesh, give us a break!
Man those Yankees got lucky with the rain. The sox were undoubtedly about to unleash a savage beating, the likes of which the world has never seen. I shudder to think of the consequences of such dominance. God must have felt some pity for the Yankees and ultimately, for the universe, as we were all about to be horribly traumatized.
For now, we wait.
Getting more lightning off to the west again now. Here comes the stuff they say is moving in.
More rain, more delay.
Call the game?
crap, Pap threw again and had to shut down again per Buck.
*whisper to Tim*
where were these guys last night??
Start, baseball! Dammit. They don't realize another cell is on the way.
And... there is the new thunderstorm.
Blast.
tarp back out?
Amy too.
I wasn't even complaining about the OTHER blog!
:)
Rain delays are boring. Glad I ate.
Celtics are winning....
The sox were undoubtedly about to unleash a savage beating, the likes of which the world has never seen. I shudder to think of the consequences of such dominance.
That has already happened.
*whisper to ish*
Yeah, true. well hopefully they'll keep it up.
anyway im off for foodstuffs, have a good night everyone!
....the likes of which the world has seen but once....
What iS it about Kevin Kennedy that makes him so loathsome? In fact, that whole Fox mission control trio has a Q Factor in negative numbers...
mega thunder and lightning now
What iS it about Kevin Kennedy that makes him so loathsome?
He thinks he knows everything, but he really knows nothing.
He makes Julian Tavarez look like a 30-year-old Paul Newman.
It's all because of that buried tee-shirt, you know.
THAT must be it.Thanks, Redsock.
Of course, being on a radio show with Rob Dibble for 15 hours a week would make Corky from "Life Goes On" act like he knows everything.
Fragging canadians, oops, wrong blog :)
From what I can see probably another 20 minutes before they can even think about taking the tarp off. Ticks me off that they pulled this crap with Papelbon.
guy on radio calling in from near pesky pole. he sounds either retarded or wasted. says it's pouring.
They're showing some car racing crap on FOx now. We're watching Godfather on A&E for the millionth time...
plus i don't think he distinguished himself as manager of the local 9.
s1c... you found a Bruins blog? Or was that just a joke?
Ish - a joke!
He makes Julian Tavarez look like a 30-year-old Paul Newman.
*shudder*
Colleges, b-fly crosses off slippery rock from the colleges just because of the name of the town, "I just can't imagine living in a town called slippery rock."
Is it still raining in Boston? It is so warm and nice here just 90 miles away.
I'll go take the trash and this pizza box out and I'll let you know the weather. Please hold....
Latest from Benjamin:
7:24
Apparently there is another band of showers coming through, which is why the tarp isn't entirely off the field.
Jonathan Papelbon is warming up in the bullpen, and Kevin Youkilis was throwing on the first base side, but the tarp might be heading back on.
It has been dry for about 20 or so minutes at this point.
7:27
The tarp is back on the field right now, as the sky has gotten extremely dark. There was also just a bolt of lightning.
Oh, yeah, and it's raining again.
Apparently the forecasts were correct -- this time.
***
Nothing since then -- 45 minutes ago.
s1c, the college thing is quite fascinating. I learned a lot from listening to what my kids liked and didn't like about various colleges. Believe me, there are much sillier reasons used to eliminate colleges than their names!
No rain 3 miles from the park! Just dripping from the trees...
According to the radar mapso I would think we should be starting soon.
Amy, I agree, its just funny listening to her go through the college lists. Last night she asked me about college visits. Taking a look at her list, I told her we would start college visits when she had the list below 20.
I am tired of the brochures though
This is amazing. I just measured the distance from my last residence (Manhattan) to Yankee Stadium, and my current one (Boston-ish) to Fenway Park, and the distances are the same down to the tenth of a mile.
Tarp is coming off the field, Papelbon's in the bullpen.
Fox acting like it's about to start up again.
This is one of those times I used to dream of--living close to the park, long delay, and just going over and walking right in and getting a good seat. But I don't think they'd allow it thee days. Players taking field!
Pap warming up...again.
S1C, 20 college visits?? I think we did about 8 for our daughters, including several that were within an hour or two from home.
Game on!
so cold there--a little north, it's totally fine. Found that out on the garbage outtaking that incredibly has now gotten two mentions in a Red Sox-Yankees game thread. Granted, both were from me, but still. We are ready to go!
So Jere, what's the magic distance?? How far are you from Fenway?
Papelbon's on the mound, taking his warmup tosses.
Game's back on!
Ah--I'm not gonna tell my stalkers that!
Time to start snuffin'!
between 2 and 4 miles:)
And here we go! A-Rod's in the box, ready for the first pitch.
Did anyone leave Fenway during the delay?
I am nervous....
lopez up.
Two strikes...
Holding my breath.
YEEEEEAHHH!!!
SNUFFER SNUFFED!!!!
amy says 2 strikes before i hear the pitch delivered.
WORTH every second of the wait to see that!!
Jere & Kim = Happy
Game day says 98 HEAT!
Bot > Rod
People had to have left. Two hour delay. (Though I always think, You made tie to go to the game, stick it out and stay til the end! YOu had big plans on the night of a Sox-Yanks game you're going to??)
Sorry, Allan, to ruin your suspense there.
While driving home, we switched from the Worcester station to the SPringfield station as we started losing Worcester. There was at least a two second delay between two radio stations about 50 miles apart--we heard at least one pitch over. Very odd.
hawkins in to face tiz, manny and yook
The Bot!!!
Boy, moderating sucks when you're relying on MLB audio.
Time for Papi to unload.
Yeah, stands look fairly emptied on the upper levels.
no problem. gameday also had it up. so i see what happens, then wait for the call to hear how it happened.
Oh, Papi, my heart is breaking for you.
Someone asked earlier whether we would start hearing boos at Fenway for Ortiz. I refuse to believe such a thing could happen.
Fox is really switching to Nascar in 15 min? WTF?!??!?!
It could happen. But it also could be Yankees fans booing.
a-rod distracted by the two runners off with the 2-strike pitch? ... joe said he looked puzzled after the k. good work girardi.
Fox guy suggests Sox may bring in Timlin---is he nuts or something?
Jake... The Sox game should be showed on either FOX or FX. Because I saw the game was on both channels, at least here. So when they make the switch, check FX.
Yankee fans booing Ortiz--of course! But not Sox fans....
cut away from a 4-3 red sox/yankees game in the 9th inning to show a bunch of cars driving around and around in a circle?
makes sense.
I just found F/X on my cable and it seems to be showing our game already.
Game will be over in less than 15 minutes. 3 up, 3 down. I hope.
This game will be over in 15 minutes so don't sweat the small stuff.
Pap throwin strikes
It's actually an oval, with a kink in it. So like, a trioval.
Makes all the difference in the world.
God, Bot is hot.
0-2
lyndon to LF
coco in CF
Giambi doesn't chase, 1-2
where was that!?
I don't have cable :(
But I'm very glad mlb.tv isn't blacked out. Just fired it up as a backup...
thought it caught the inside corner, but it's the walk master so they give him the call
K swinging. 97 mph
One away!
5 1/3 innings for Papelbon... 11 strikeouts.
0-2 on Posada
splitter really working
Whenever I see the bot reaching 95 on the gun, I sit back and relax.
from the radio it sounds like he's throwing fucking seeds.
Snuff away! One down, two to go...
2-2 on Whore Hay
Why do they keep making such a big deal about Pap warming up three times?
Sock he is throwing seeds and the splitter is really breaking down.
splitter? gameday says only fastballs this inning.
cuz he had to get up, sit down, get up, sit down. pitchers like to stay in their routine. Not be made to throw, then stop, the start again. But Pap doesn't seem to mind
K!
K swinging!!!
Nope. He's had some amazings splits.
Bot > Posada !!!
Damn delay. I know the outcome from you guys before the pitch ever leaves his hand.
Well if a ball that is breaking 7" inches isn't a splitter then there is no such think.
2 down.
Bot > their whole fooking roster
Would it mean he would not be available tomorrow? Is it about tiring his arm more than usual? Or just about a break in routine for this game?
Just Cano to go.
swung on and missed, in dirt
That whiff was on a split in the dirt.
Bot > their whole fooking roster
Essackly!
That one was way high!
last pitch was a split
gameday says fb with an 8 inch break. hmmm
everybody up
also it was clocked at 90. that aint no heater.
Two strikes... one to go.
Full count.
Me holding my breath, saying, "it's only April."
Finish him off with a slutter!
:>)
Cano just stayed alive there
Come on. High heat.
Not too high. But he'll chase high heat.
Damn foul balls.
And they just switched to Nascar.
Game is on FX.
Foul tip. Arrgggh.
Why do all these games feel like October?
They freaking went to nascar! you have to be freaking kidding me. Good thing I have FX.
4-3 IT'S OVAHHH!!!!!!
WE win!!
no it'll be 10th pitch
win. I'm there tomorrow nite, see you all Monday!
Bot finish!
lmao.
Time of game: 2 hours, 49 minutes.
I am glad you guys told me to switch to FX.
Whatta ya know?
It isn't Robbie Cano!
Have fun tomorrow, Jere. Make it 2 out of 3!
Got to wonder if Pap will be available tomorrow.
thanks. I'm second row bleachers, right by that bullpen-cam. Watch for me! I'll be the guy in the Red Sox hat.
I think Papelbon is my superhero.
Yes!!!
MLB.tv actually had game video but Nascar audio for about 90 seconds...
Now off to watch the Bruins go down 2 games to none on Montreal.
You see, unfortunately I've taken my Red Sox fan tactics to the Bruins. No matter how gloomy it gets... watch.
