Red Sox - 000 010 202 - 5 13 1Once again, the Red Sox get some 10 o'clock lightning and come from behind to win.
Cleveland - 000 020 100 - 3 8 1
The big hit in the seventh was a two-run single from Lowrie, who also drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth. With one out in the ninth, Jason Varitek (pinch-hitting for Kevin Cash) hit an opposite field home run to snap a 3-3 tie. Crisp singled to left and Pedroia doubled to right-center. After Ortiz popped to second and Manny was walked intentionally, Youkilis stroked a single to left. Ococ scored, but Pedroia was tagged out trying to score (and missing the plate).
Jeemer nailed it down, striking out Hafner and Martinez on four pitches each, and getting Peralta to foul out to Ellsbury in right. Jacoby made a nifty catch, half-leaping into the stands and robbing a fan of the ball!
Lugo was 3-for-4, Pedroia was 3-for-5, Yook was 2-for-4 with a walk, Ellsbury singled and walked twice. Manny was 0-for-3 with a BBI and HBP.
Ortiz's 5 PAs: GIDP453, single to RF, F7, F8, P4.
Toronto whipped Baltimore 11-3 (and New York held on to beat Tampa 5-3), so we are now in first place!

Jed Lowrie makes his major league debut tonight at third base.
Coco Crisp, David Ortiz and DeMarlo Hale will all wear #42 in recognition of Jackie Robinson, who made his debut 61 years ago today. Crisp: "Also, Larry Doby, you can't forget about him. He was the first in the American League."

Borowski, on last night: "I just felt like I had nothing. It felt like [I was] throwing through water, pretty much. Physically, I felt fine, but I was stuck in one gear. I had no extra gear."
Maybe he and Dumbo should get together and go bowling.
Good for Coco. People DO forget about Larry Doby, and it has always struck me as weird. There was no connection (outside of the All-Stars and the Series) between the NL and AL those days, and Doby followed Robinson just one year later. I can't believe he had a significantly easier time of it in the AL because Robinson had broken the barrier in the NL, but his story is virtually unknown---another example of how Americans can't digest a complex narrative.

What do you think is better, from a player's standpoint here on Joy of Sox - having a nickname? Or not having a nickname?
Nicks are the best! Promotes togetherness, shows love and oh who the frack knows!
Am looking forward to seeing this Lowrie guy play. Schilling said he's the real deal this morning in his interview.
(I swear, if I ever meet the guy who said that mal ware was a good thing, he's going to get a size 10 right up his you know what)
You lost me halfway through your post, Jack.
Good to see Lowrie out there.
Sooo nervous about the Bruins tonight. I'll be popping in occasionally to talk about what's going on with the Sox.
See yah folks.
I have no offical standing here , but folks ..The moderator should post the lineups, he always has and always should.....
He may say he doesn't care , and maybe I shouldn't either , but for some unknown reason I do...
Sooo nervous about the Bruins tonight. I'll be popping in occasionally to talk about what's going on with the Sox.
Me too.
Hey if anyone wants to they can do a bruins game post here.
Its not a bruins blog, but I make it available for you.
Go Habs. /whisper
I agree with 9Casey, although Ish's team names are nice.
Re Doby, there was a flurry of interest in him a few years back... anniversary of...?? Don't remember. I will check.
But America loves "firsts". It's not like the interest in Jackie Robinson is a serious interest in racism or even racism in baseball. Robinson is a "first", and the interest begins and ends there.
The sanitized version of the Jackie Robinson story that makes the rounds makes people feel good about themselves, congratulating themselves on how far we've come. It's talked about in completely bland terms. You could read dozens of mainstream articles on Robinson and never even learn what "the color bar" was, this thing that Robinson "broke".
Allan and I co-wrote an essay about this last year, if anyone is interested.
I agree with 9Casey
I agree too, now that I think about it. It only makes sense.
Oh, I agree with s1c, nicknames are where it's at.
Ish, it's totally nothing against you, I hope you know. Your oatmeal is as lumpy as anyone else's.
Won't be threading tonight all, I'm still at work but leaving now to see the greatest band ever. NYC ska legends, The Slackers, are doing a string of Canadian dates. Gonna be an amazing show!
Go Sox!
(whispers to joe grav and ish: Go B's!)
Ish, it's totally nothing against you, I hope you know.
Heh, no worries.
A bunch of Habs fans are standing around outside the Garden and there's one guy wearing a Bruins sweater that says "Habs Suck" on the back.
I can't find the Red Sox game on TV. Rut roh.
As long as the lineups gets posted in the G# post, I don't care who does it.
Allan and I co-wrote an essay about this last year, if anyone is interested.
Link it up.
NESN in L-Sock Land!!!
But there is a Bruins promo.....
WTF?
shit -- and then it cuts to the Cleveland douchetards.
... but if everyone wants to let me post them, that's okay, too!
Sox on NESN Plus. Bruins on NESN Minus.
Crisp with 42 but no name.
Hey! COlor coordinated hat guy! He is there. Yellow hat tonight. Above 1st base dugout.
FY!
I wish I could get Joe C. on my computer. Anyone know of a link for that?
Just go to mlb audio and click WRKO
Warning track power for Little Grady.
jere, you doing either of the mfy games?
K-vid Delucci.
Uh, was thinking about calling tomorrow nite.
if you are right and i'm getting stuck with mr. there's a strike, i may need you to b'cast.
Link it up.
Thanks Zen, here you go.
Nice to see those #42 jerseys w/o names. Very cool.
Get ready for HOT PINK this inning.
Am I the only one who knows about the color coordinated hat man?
"there's a strike"
ha.
I won't be around for the beginning of THurs nite, so I'll have to do tomorrow out of the two
I won't be around for the start of tomorrow night's game, Weds nights are resisters meetings. I'm hoping for an two hour rain delay.
Wow--2 knob hits in one at bat?
Paul Byrd good for the all-animal team.
2 on 2 out for Pettitte in the 1st
Good evening, folks. That Lowrie guy looks cute.
But Eva Ks, 0-0 after 1.
Okay, Jacoby on deck, when he's up, look behind him for the old man in the pink hat.
I think it's best to ignore people like the colour hat guy.
Hi there.
(She says to the TV screen.)
did not know about this hat guy, but checked out the link.
Ok, just got back from the trip (white knuckle time, she has her learners permit) to b-fly's dance class.
Hows Wakes Knuckler dancing?
L: no chance. 3rd inning: Neon Yellow!
I will be in and out...other stuff needs my fingers for typing tonight.
No chance why? Cuz you like it or cuz you can't look away, even though you don't like it?
... as opposed to "hat guy" that gets made fun of at FJM.
Here I will not make a joke about priorities. :)
s1c, yikes. I hated those days of learner's permit teenagers. I still hate when my kids drive, even though they are 23 and 27.
Gotcha, Laura. :)
I dunno, just...no reason. Last chance to see hat man at a Sox game this year, until possibly October. I just like to, like, notice stuff that nobody cares about. It's kinda my thing.
Bsae Hti
Since you linked to a story about him, I would say someone must notice. But hey, if it's your thing, it's your thing. Enjoy.
jed with the assist
Do you not watch the movements of Red Sox Senior Advisor/Special Projects Jeremy Kapstein and Giant Glass CEO Dennis Drinkwater behind the plate in the front row at every Fenway game? You're missin out:)
cashballa?
You are correct, I do not.
I watch the game, I mod, I read comments, I post comments, I drink wine, I check email, and on ocassion I try to get Allan's attention. It keeps me pretty busy. :)
Nice job, Wake.
key call there. We move to the neon yellowth inning.
Hannibal's Brother K's to end the inning.
Who do you call when your windshield's BUS-TED ...
on ocassion I try to get Allan's attention
hmmm, to let the mind go to the gutter or to not let the mind go to the gutter. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
I can assure you no gutter is needed.
On that "rivalry" commercial--one shot of Bobby Abreu had "New York" backwards on his jersey. Kinda like how I watched Caddyshack last night ad spotted a scene where that one caddy had "Night Riders" backwards on his T-shirt. How do they let this stuff go? DO they think we won't notice??
Laura, ignore this comment.
If I ignore it, it won't get posted!
Cash you are slow.
shit!
What did Lowrie do his first time up? What's the scouting on this kid?
Damn, DP.
Crap, nice play by blake, I thought for sure that would be a base hit.
impressive dp.
fuckers.
Amy, Lowrie just finished his AB. He K'd.
Cash = runs like a catcher.
this was his 1st time up
Oh yeah, that was only the third inning. What was I thinking?
Roadrunner, roadrunner
You were thinking, he's cute, did I miss anything?
pretty good call by Remy--don't know if Cle announcers are saying it but Tito argued the call at 2nd on the DP--guy off the bag entirely.
Cle ancrs made no mention of that.
LOL, exactly! I missed the top half of the first so thought maybe we went through the whole lineup and never scored. Hmm, that would be something.
Pettite gives up three singles in a row...DP gets him out of it.
That's five hits, no runs for Tampa. One hit, one run (Matsui HR) for the Yanks. Jeez.
ha, didn't think so.
They just called the knuckleball "enigmatic". A $5 word for an announcer.
they have said nothing. except making the DP a "mcdonalds i'm lovin' it" play.
So you're saying Pettitte's having problems but is recovering quickly? Interesting.
Picked off! NESN misses it...
Wake!!!
Love pick offs!!!
Nice pickoff!
clev tv missed the pickoff completely.
when they showed the field, it was showing us the 2B ump's ass.
I love pickoffs too!! Alright.
On the DP: Guy brings the one foot that WAS on the bag OFF the bag, THEN catches ball and throws to first. It was, I guess, debatable, but easily could've gotten a safe call. And Tito was out arguing.
Gut has this stunned look on his face, love it!!!
NESN with 2 good replays of pickoff--but missed it on the original. We just heard Remy say "Got him!"
Another baserunner for the DEVIL rays
count back to 2-2. Now 3-2 again.
Heifer K
Wake works out of it again!
Wakey is looking good!!!
that switched ball-to-foul has thrown GDGD for a loop.
1st and sec, 2 out for TB. For the love of ATH, score!
Nice job to get out of that, Wake.
Jonny Wad Gomes up.
I think TB tied it.
Jere- Who's playing third for the Rays?
Rays up 2-1
2 runs on 7 hits, at least 2 walks for ANdy thru 3
Go, Papi!!
Yeah Papi!
another hit for Big Papi.
Flo reaches, can we have a replay of the ninth from last night please MBM!!!
Tom must be in bathroom, because Joanne wearing the neon green hat this inning.
Nuts
Cle ancrs talking about the Ortiz jersey in YS thing, speculating that maybe the Yankees did it for publicity.
Hey, I didn't even remember in that article that it says hat guy only makes about 20 games per year. So, you see, this really is a special occasion.
Only as a joke, I mean. Not seriously like the bloody sock comments or anything.
Ncie.
brak ppo uot
Foooey. Come on, Wake. No more hits.
LJC, if you are reading, thank you very much. I replied on wmtc. Have fun lurking. :)
It appears every Devil Ray is wearing 42.
Wow, that's cool. Good on them.
Nice job, Lowrie.
The DP saves the day!
Runs, please, lets get some runs!!!
Yanks tie it at a deuce.
Yes. Could we have some
RUNS PLEASE!!!!
Who was the first AL player to hit a home run from both sides in an inning?
Beats the frack out of me, but I bet it was an indian.
I don't think there was a DP.
Argh, fucking people named Grady.
Yanks lead 3-2
LBJ gets the double!!!
Shit, I think I know that trivia q...
That's my boy!!!
Another Jacoby-like hit/play by Jacoby.
I wonder, should I refer to him as MBJ instead of LBJ?
Another hit! Sox at the corners.
jed time!
RATC, 1 out.
Time for his first ML RBI...
Jed's speed gives us the run!
NICE!!! Yay Lowrie!!!!
Jed gets his first RBI, grab that ball!!!
Damn, I missed Lowrie's at bat and he got a hit? And an RBI? Good stuff!
Need a 1-2-3 from Wake, get those bats right back up to the plate.
No hit, FC, beat the relay and LBJ scored.
I know the answer to the Trivia--he played for the Indians and Sox. (Or did they say it already?)
oh my lord, Border Patrol ad behind home plate. Scary.
Jere - I haven't seen the answer yet, so if you know go right ahead!
Oo, I just thought of the answer, too. I don't know if they said it yet, b/c it must be on a NESN channel.
no--I meant I looked it up. SO I was giving you a clue. But now they told--Baerga. The only NL guy was Bellhorn.
This inning is not looking good.
The answer is Carlos Baerga!
come on, triple play-vid Delucci
I knew it without looking it up. Bellhorn and Baerga. I must have heard it on some other trivia q somewhere.
Do you remember who hit two grand slams in one inning?
4-2 TB
Bill Mueller's two grand dongs--one from each side--were in consecutive innings.
5-2 yanks.
Yup, but I wasn't thinking of Pro. This was two GSs in one inning.
Aase up.
Anyone know the first player to hit HRs from each side of the plate in the same game?
There's your DP
Nice DP. A little late, but nice.
Finally, now lets get some runs!
Now we have 2 trivia qs up if anyone's biting.
I'll just say Mantle for ALlan's Q. But it would have to be earlier than that, right?
Full CoCount
Hat guy looks like a Timlin now with the brown coat and neon orange hat.
Quite a bit earlier. Most of Allan's points of reference tend to be old. Very old.
Hat guy looks like a Timlin now with the brown coat and neon orange hat.
I'll bet Hat Guy could get HGH out, though.
FY!
Yeah, I just can't think of switch-hitters pre Mantle. My switch hitters are more of the Ted Simmons era.
fookin hackathon from flo and mbm.
Crud. It's okay, only down 1
So no takers on my triv q?
What team? on both questions
Hmm, I don't remember what team for mine. I only know the player, I'll have to double check the team.
The team on Allan's q will be no help, but it was Philadelphia. That is, the Athletics.
Hint: 1915.
Oops, mine was Cardinals. Just remembered.
Oh man, Slugo, that was awful.
Renteria: Havana Nights
Cash in now honey!
Ca Ching!!!
assdribble - not fast.
And we're out of it.
What's the year on the L question?
1999
jorge julio = red sox batting practice pitcher.
oooh, Julio. We should score here.
yeah, we like facing this guy
ball five.
Okay, some guy on the McGwire era Cards who switch hit. I just can't think of it.
WHO-LEE-OOOOOOOOOOOO!
YEAH! That's my Bush. I mean Julio.
2 on, 0 out
2 bbs...
JUlio vs. Julio. Nope, their Julio comes out. A job...done.
okay he's not really a BP pitcher with 8 balls in 9 pitches.
nite nite whore-hey.
If his job was to give us two baserunners, he was outstanding.
bases loaded
Everybody safe!!!
rare to see a pitcher horizontal
needle nose Jed, Jed the Head, come on!
Unless you're Mrs. Pitcher.
carbo theory, bad swing followed by good, come on now
the kid does it!!
