Yankees - 000 030 002 - 5 8 1
Manny hit home runs in each of his first two plate appearances (and scored three runs). Youkilis, Pedroia, Drew and Varitek each had two hits.

Josh Beckett (6.35, 70 ERA+) / Mike Mussina (4.15, 101 ERA+)
Dear Josh: Please give us more than 5 innings. If you gave us 7, you'd be the first starter to do so this season. We would like that.

Wow...
It's not all in Josh's hands, however. 1)It would be nice if the Sox got an umpire who wasn't squeezing the strike zone, adding to pitch count. Wake and Buchholtz were really victimized that last two nights. 2)A solid lead would help, given Tito's proclivity to bale on his starters in close games 3)The 6th seems to be the point where Francona takes pitchers out when he doesn't have to. How often have you seen a Francona starter end with a couple of strikeouts and still be yanked? In the old days, that literally never happened, and there's no reason why it has to in 2007.
My thoughts exactly. Imagine what it would be like NOT to have to see either Tavarez or Timlin or Lopez tonight....

Yeah, as much as this contradicts my old attitude...I think he should sometimes leave the starters in a bit longer than he has recently. The bullpen's going to be gassed by July if this keeps up.
Rob...they've made it through 6.67 innings, but never got the third out in the seventh.
How about 8 innings, huh, Beckett? That would be SO sweet.
1)It would be nice if the Sox got an umpire who wasn't squeezing the strike zone, adding to pitch count.
I was more aware of Sox getting squeezed, but I do recall that we got some gifts last night.
I can't remember thinking that Tito has had a quick hook with the starters this year.
I have noticed that he seems to not let a reliver flounder out there quite as much. A slightly quicker hook than in the past.
Jack, I disagree. On the third point, that is. From what I've seen, Tito's pull of the starters usually has to do with the pitch count and who is coming up. I've been getting a little upset at how long he can leave Dice-K in for.
This team is playing deep into October and I want all of my starters fresh and pumped for the occasion.
we need to light up the moose tonight.
fuck that guy.
AB: "Bryan Corey, who was designated for assignment to make room for Mike Timlin last Friday, has elected to take free agency."

Jesus , how does Tito get any blame for the starting pitching/ his starters hve walked 53 in 86 innings....Thats ridiculous....wheter or not they are getting squeezed .....There is not a team in baseball who has walked more guys than the Red Sox... The way the staters have pitched we are lucky to be 9-7.....
Redsock---don't you think Francona has a tendency not to let his starter get that 3rd out? And he's been burned by the relief a couple times already in those situations. I count 25% of the games with the starter going 6.2 innings.
Regarding being squeezed---the ump was squeezing both sides, no question. But I don't know if I can remember a game in which one missed strike call led to more carnage than last night. Tek and Buchholtz had set up Moeller perfectly, the pitch was strike three, 3rd out, exactly where Tek's glove was, and when it was mis-called and Chad got his cheap bloop, the wheels came off. I know, it's part of the game; it happens. But it changed the whole game.
Good point, 9Casey. This is partly the result of losing Schilling, who walked nobody, of course. And Wake is a special case. But facts are facts...
I'm expecting similar run production as last night for us, as we have just seen the moose, and he doesn't have the ridiculous stuff that Beckett has.
Adversely, Beckett might not go seven because the Yanks just saw him last week, and will be better off.
I'm guessing 5-3 sox, with a J.D. Dong.
When are we posting JoS oatmeal?
when DOESNT the moose get lit up.
i'm looking for double-digits from our boys tonight!
I think everybody is forgetting that the Sox lost over a week of spring training due to the Japan trip. That is huge because it is usually the last 2 starts in spring training that they get the starters up to the 100 pitch range (stretched out as Tito would say). Except for Daisuke, Tito has been pulling the guys at the 95-100 pitch range. This will work out in the end, as long as the starters start to throw strikes.
Ish/tim/and other bruins - I have a post up for you if you want to talk Bruins.
Put Dale Arnold in the Tappen side of the ledger.
Michael Holley: When I say NESN what do you think of?
Dale Arnold: Kathryn Tappen
MH: C'mon, be serious
I wrote last night (I think) that that the innings will go up as the season goes on, weather gets warmer, and arms get stretched out.
S1c makes an excellent point also about the shortened spring training due to the trip. That is undoubtedly affecting the length of starts, but should work itself out soon. There is that pesky little fact, though, that throwing more strikes would lessen the pitch count and allow you to go deeper into the game.
Effective effeciency. Something we haven't been too good at so far.
Wouldn't you know?
The only night I don't have a LL commitment this week (putting me home about 9:30 or 10), and my granddaughter has a 7:00 softball game.
Not complaining, tho. With all the time spent with my team, I rarely get to see hers, so I'm up for it.
Go Lady Cyclones!
Hope I come home to find the Sox in control, and all smiles on JoS.
Devine is back! Nice to see you. (Or it was, he's probably gone now.)
Hi all. We have YES. Allan is complaining.
shit - YES -- jere was right.
Does anyone know if Jere is calling the game tonight?
Looking at my TV and seeing Michael Kay:
"There's a douche."
I don't think he is.
Hey, don't be hitting my boy.
Our boy ain't hurt, is he?
Right in the ass.
Yeah right, like you can catch him. As if.
Let the beanball wars start!
LBJ should be able to get a jump on Mussina
See!!!
lyndon is standing there flossing his teeth when moeller's throw arrives.
FY showing why he is so hard to strike out.
8 pitches.
JR: I wouldn't consider last night a baseball game.
NO mods
Crap, not what we needed there.
Shit. Hate those DPs...
s1c, shhh....
We're prepared to turn it on at in a milisec if needed.
kay whining how the umps give manny and tiz latitude to bitch
mussina still pitching a no-hitter
s1c, shhh....
lips are sealed (and no mine aren't sexy).
I hope s1c-ette disagrees.
werd with the easy catch
Wouldn't it be nice to have a 1-2-3 first inning?
Allan, do you know if it's possible to upgrade to MLB.tv Premium after buying the basic? I'm finally going to do it. For the sake of my bar tab if nothing else.
Amy don't jinx it!!!
Yes!
al lieter and john flaherty on YES -- actually quite good. if only kay had called in sick. or would stfu.
Allan, I see your list of how far the starters have gotten this season. Any sense of how that compares to last year? I wonder whether this is just typical April cold weather starts or the effects of the Japan trip or just a bad series of weak starts.
zen: i went with basic because i use it only at work on the weekend. and now i may be able to bring in my laptop and get the games (after not having video last weekend). so i don't think upgrading gives me anything extra.
amy: i could look this weekend.
BEING!!!!!!!!!!!!
MBM!!!
Yeah Baby!!!
MBM WITH A DONG OFF THE BIGOT
There goes the shutout for Mussina. :)
poor tala, she hates when we shout and clap!
Ah, Zen breaks down and orders mlbtv. I'm glad.
Hey, YES just showed my #1 boy, Lou Gehrig. My all-time favourite player.
RS: Right. But do you know if it's possible. That is, I want to get Basic and be able to upgrade if I need the extra quality.
Mussina's a bigot? I didn't know that. Arrogant, yes, but a bigot?
Glossary, Amy, Glossary!!
OK, checking out the glossary.
I can tell the quality difference in MLB.tv premium when I hook my laptop up to the tv and go fullscreen, but not when I just watch on the computer.
Looked up the numbers for the Sox last april. In 5 starts last year for Curt and Daisuke they threw 33 inning, followed by Beckett 32.2, and Wake at 31.1. Tavarez was the only starter last year to average less than 6 (4 starts 19 innings).
Tek!!!
Jason!
RS, ummm, what in the glossary? I see nothing under bigot or Mussina.
kay is wrong - bonds BBI with bases loaded only one time.
as far as we know, it has happened only 3 times ever.
RS, ummm, what in the glossary? I see nothing under bigot or Mussina.
really?
Interesting, S1C, thanks for the stats. But did anyone get 7 or more innings?
I see it. Bronx bigot. How was I to know that? :)
Amy: It's under Bronx Bigot.
Yes, they did! Daisuke for one (Mariner game that he lost when King Felix shut out the Sox). Just off the top of my head.
See the comment above. I found it. Thanks!
Yes, they did! Daisuke for one (Mariner game that he lost when King Felix shut out the Sox).
oh yeah the game in which dice was "annihilated"
just checking in beckett looking good!
Another 1-2-3!
"DRILLED BY GIAMBI!"
Relatively routine fly ball out for Lyndon. STFU Kay.
heng: really. lbj barely had to jog over. jeez.
Looks like the dominator has his game face on tonight.
Runs please!!!
(amy - Daisuke's first 5 starts las year he went 7, 7 , 6 , 7 and 6).
Hey, it was Opening Day #2 tonight: the first grilled/backyard dinner of the season. Steak, salad, asaparagus and red wine. Ahhh...
It is *finally* spring here in southern Ontario. A/k/a northern world.
Remy and Orsino singing LBJ's praises.
Hit again! That's what they get for trying to pitch him inside.
Oooh, I think LBJ stole that call.
Thanks, S1C. I knew it felt better last season.
Go baby go!!!
That's my boy!
kay is being very good tonight in getting leiter and flaherty to discuss pitcher v batter stuff.
honestly, if don and jerry did 1/4 of this, they would be sooooo much better.
but they don;t.
That boy is quite amazing. I love that we have speed!
Shades of Willie Wilson!!!
Ok, FY, just get the bat on the ball.
I wonder how long it will be until Lyndon gets caught stealing. I love this perfect streak.
I really shouldn't be here because my annual report for work is due tomorrow, but goddamn! I heart Laura's Boy.
Amy, I love having speed, too. It's an exciting part of the game.
Haha... stay tuned for a message from our friends at Fox Business Channel. Are you kidding me?
FY!!!
moooooooooooooooooose
Pedroyer gets a hit! (Remy-talk)
I liked Youk in the 2 spot, but I'm enjoying this 1-2. Imagine when Papi become big again.
I smell A Papi Dong, lets go to the magic 8 ball!!!
Yes, and base stealing isn't generally something the Sox have done all that well (Dave Roberts notwithstanding).
s1c, I just saw your comment on the blog that was quoting me re Dalai Lama. Thanks for that! I was reading the comment, thinking, what a nice thing for someone to say...then I saw it was you. Thanks for that, my friend.
Oh, well, I guess I need to get my smell sensors checked.
Kay confirms Moose's racist asshole tendencies. Wow.
L-girl, you are welcome, though I don't think I did you justice.
kay saying japan bothered papi's rhythm. says mussina hated it. brought peanut butter and white bread and never left his hotel room.
MBM 2 in ne night!!!!
sorry flahery that was NOT inside.
BEING AGAIN!!!!!
MBM! Manny may get his 500th tonight at this rate!!
There's Joy in Repetition, Manny!
YOU ARE A VERY VERY BAD MAN [/babu]
Get the shower ready for Moose.
Wow, he really is a bigot. Fancy Stanford liberal arts education sure didn't enlighten him.
even worse, moose taken deep by a black man. his klan buddies will not be pleased.
MBM sitting next to Beckett, has like this sardonic smile on his face. I can just hear him saying, "you can't stop him, you can only contain him but boy oh boy am I going to stop you!"
s1c, really, i am honoured. how did you get over there? is that a blog you read?
ON FIRE!!!
and the hits just keep on coming!!!
MBM probably saying "i'd hit these bombs off you, too, you know."
What blog are you talking about, Laura?
L-girl, I usually check on that blog once a week. Unlike WMTC which is daily!
Tek, no swinging at the high stuff.
fuck you blue
HIT!! Good job!
s1c, cool. :)
Amy, I saw a URL in my Statcounter, lots of people coming to wmtc from one place. When I went there, it was a negative comment about a post of mine. I asked a follow-up question... when I went back to see if the blogger had responded, I saw a post from s1c in my defence! I was very surprised. (And pleased.)
As it turns out, the blogger is someone banned from my blog for pro-war sentiments and general obnoxiousness. Had I known...
TEK!!!!
...it was him, I wouldn't have responded at all. I'll give you a link in a min.
40 pitches for moose this inning - so far
Here it is.
I was wondering what his problem was. But like I said, if I had read more carefully, I would have realized it was just a wingnut with a vendetta.
77 pitches for him in 3.
I've got audio...don't have time to fool with the video at work today.
Will catch the end in the bar. Hang in there, Josh!
This game makes me happy.
bigot pc: 14-21-42 = 75
beckett pc: 12-6 = 18
So redsock---still diaagree with me that Moose won't last the season with the Yankees? (Michael Kay began the 'cast saying that Mussina had "reinvented himself." Right: as a batting practice pitcher!)
In fairness, Mussina's pitched a whole 'nother half inning.
Actually L-girl, that blog now has multiple posters. Daimian expeanded it due to his pending marriage, etc.
Is anyone warming up inte MFY pen yet?
right now, yeah, i disagree. they don't have many other choice. maybe they make a move in july, but for now ... i think he'll be "good enough" - league average
Mussina barely lasted through last season, but it's not like the MFYs have alternatives.
s1c, is it a popular blog?
jesus, I swear if I ever meet the guy who invented mal ware trojans I am going to go postal on him.
Need the double play here.
I ask b/c I am getting a lot of traffic from it.
l-girl, not as popular as it was. It used to be fairly good, but ever since he added the marks its fallen off.
Beckett's averaging a fraction over three pitches per batter so far.
I should say pitchers per out.
Kessel scores - 1 1 in MTL
Do you think Damon is pissed watching LBJ sporting as many WS rings as he has?
Sit, Judas.
beckett - 31 pitches in 3 innings
mussina - 42 pitches last inning alone.
:>)
Thanks for filling me in, Laura. I looked it over. Not sure what that guy's point was, but I thought you and S1C responded well and effectively.
s1c, funny coincidence, you reading that blog, and mark from ottawa can't stand me, often slagging me when he can think of an excuse. big internet, but sometimes it seems like a small town.
I love when Damon makes the third out. Or any out.
Thanks Amy! I had a feeling you were over there. :)
I think his problem is he was banned from my blog and can't get over it. Other than that, I have no idea!
I wish this was a longer series. We're going to RAVAGE their bullpen. Whoever they play tomorrow should send up a thank you card.
into pitch for the yanees:
I'm-a-pendejo
Damon should be pissed thinking, I used to be that young and good-looking...
Lugo showing some life at the plate.
Where did this pitcher come from? What's his name? It came and went so fast I couldn't get it.
or thinking i used to be good and on a good team!
bwahaha!
Does LBJ get hit again?
batting practice anyone?
mfy play the birds
Not so much on the basepaths.
Lugo, I've seen Jacob Ellsbury. And you are no Jacob Ellsbury.
waaaaa!
WEEI has been killing Slugo lately.
Redsock - The question for the Remdawg today was: "Are you more worried about Timlin or Papi?"
CI missed the tag
Joe C. always dissing players slides.
No way Yankees will release Mussina mid-season. He'd have to get muuuch worse, and they'd make it seem injury-related.
worried about Papi?
Jonathan Santana Albaladejo.
The MFYs picked up Santana in the off-season after all.
Redsock - The question for the Remdawg today was: "Are you more worried about Timlin or Papi?"
Do the words WHITE FLAG mean anything to them?
Then again, we're not worried about Timlin. We expect him to suck, and he does.
Amy LOL, very good.
WHAT? A 0 run inning? Trade Dustin!
Why worry about Papi? He will hit more, and he has already started.
Timlin can lose games for us. The worst Papi can do is not help win them, but he can't cost us a game.
Redsock - The question for the Remdawg today was: "Are you more worried about Timlin or Papi?"
I'm worried they'll keep Timlin around.
As long a Flo's knee is okay, I'm calm.
,,,
did look like he missed lugo's foot, but julio says nada
or thinking i used to be good and on a good team!
Oh yes, that too. That most.
Laura, I had to go scroll up to see what I said that made you laugh. My poor aging short term memory!
You can't teach that kind of loafing it to first .
Jonathan Santana Albaladejo
Cashman: "Wait -- this isn't THE Santana?!?!?"
Paraphrasing the dawg - get a grip people its 16 games, you have to worry about Timlin due to age, injuries etc. but Papi? ITS 16 GAMES!!!
How much $$$ in endorsements over a lifetime do you suppose Damon traded for his extra $3m/year for the MFYs?
I'm liking the five spot we've put on the board tonight.
I especially love seeing Manny giving Pedroia a huge bear hug just for the dugout camera.
Phren - not sure about endorsements, but I can guarantee you he will not be getting free beers.
Abreu is a good hitter, however much I don't like him.
get a grip people its 16 games, you have to worry about Timlin due to age, injuries etc. but Papi? ITS 16 GAMES!!!
Essackly.
MBM daring Abreu to g to third, loving it!!
Need to get a dp here.
Power play in MTL!!!
Josh gonna challenge HGH
sit down, lizard
Hah! Got him!
BWAHAH HAH HAH!
"He was over matched!" - Joe C.
1 more joshie, 1 more out (90 mph change for josh!)
This is as far as Buchhy got last night.
I think Timlin and Mussina may be sharing rockers in retirement soon.
hip hip you're out.
and ugly.
Posada sit your butt down!!!
Nice comeback, Josh!
MFYs are paying $177,500 per point of Giambi's .132 batting average.
FOOLISH MORTAL! You have the gall to stand in the box against our supreme commander Beckett? Take a seat!
whatta ya say we don't call him "Buchhy"
Hahaha, Jere you got problems with my lingo.
Manny looking for 3 of 5 now.
Ortiz is a steal at $115,200/point.
only when you call Red Sox something that sounds like Bucky, ha
I love WRKO starting off the inning with "Big Papa" by Norotious B.I.G
Locked in Yankee killer.
Remy - think Manny thought he was going to get thrown at, see how he's back on his heels on that first pitch?
3 for 3 for being!!!
Being too young to have seen the '86 series, Bucky, to me is a character from "Get Fuzzy".
Nice fielding.
Manny...too hot to handle. But no home run? What's wrong?
Damon---ball was too hot for him to handle even with a glove on.
kay: "manny jogging to first, so he can't take advantage of the bobble"
would any batter in baseball history have tried to go to second on that?
i'll tell you; No.
I was hoping Manny would run all the way around the bases real quick before Damon could get it in for his third dong. So we just need to score a lot more runs to get him six at bats, for the record 5-dong nite
