G17: Red Sox 7, Yankees 5

Red Sox - 014 020 000 - 7 13 0
Yankees - 000 030 002 - 5 8 1
Josh goes 8!! 8-6-3-1-5, 105.

Manny hit home runs in each of his first two plate appearances (and scored three runs). Youkilis, Pedroia, Drew and Varitek each had two hits.

Moose Being Moose: 3-7-5-0-1, 77.

***

Josh Beckett (6.35, 70 ERA+) / Mike Mussina (4.15, 101 ERA+)

Dear Josh: Please give us more than 5 innings. If you gave us 7, you'd be the first starter to do so this season. We would like that.

I'm not pleased that I'm going head to head against a team with Manny in fantasy this week.

Amy said...

OK, Drew, keep that fire going.

laura k said...

Being too young to have seen the '86 series, Bucky, to me is a character from "Get Fuzzy".

Do you mean Buckner?

Bucky is from 1978.

Jere said...

7-0 us.

FUCK YOU MICHAEL KAY -- DAVID JONATHAN DREW IS ON FUCKING FIRE

Patrick said...

No idea L-girl. No idea.

Amy said...

The whole team is on fire tonight!

Benjamin said...

Don't look now, but Drew's hitting .370. He's no Youk, but we'll take it.

laura k said...

ON FIRE!!!!

(my connection is very slow tonight, making timely comments difficult.)

IM-A-PENDEJO!

Jere said...

Patrick, are you serious?

Patrick said...

I want to register somehow to get a dollar for every time someone calls Drew's swing beautiful.

Amy said...

We forgave Buchner, but never, ever Bucky Dent.

laura k said...

no idea? hmm.

Rule of thumb, folks: Don't eat a whole pineapple at once.

Just, don't.

Amy said...

Harv left the room, went to clean up downstairs a while ago.

Not a good night for a Yankee fan.

I am trying to contain my joy for his sake.

Jere said...

Patrick, please tell me you know who Carlton Fisk is...

nixon33 said...

kay hates moose. they must have some media vs. player beef. kay is ALWAYS negative towards moose. kinda funny to listen to

allan said...

nix - yes.

don't know the diff btw dent and buckner? might be a good idea to not broadcast such a fact.

Patrick said...

Fisk is that old guy on the bench, duh. ;)

Patrick said...

might be a good idea to not broadcast such a fact.

way too late. I've dug a hole.

Jere said...

I love it, the year the Red Sox went to fucking Japan and the Yankees are making excuses about THEIR schedule. Tyler Kepner did it today, too.

Amy said...

Carlton Fisk--my first favorite Red Sox player. Still get chills when I see clips of him waving his hands for the ball to go over the fence. That moment sealed my fate as a Red Sox fan forever.

laura k said...

I don't know about anyone else, but I know about a lot of things that happened before I was born. It's called history.

Benjamin said...

Oh well. Keep it moving, Josh.

nixon33 said...

er, waving the ball to stay fair...;)

Patrick said...

L-girl, you probably have had a couple more decades to catch up than myself.

nixon33 said...

they should call it, HER-story!

laura k said...

nix, kay always has his players who he hates. used to bernie, big time. could never say anything nice about bernie w/out taking a pot-shot at him, too. you're right, now it's mussina.

laura k said...

L-girl, you probably have had a couple more decades to catch up than myself.

WTF? You don't have to be a certain age to appreciate history. You're old enough.

laura k said...

Somebody get Patrick a backhoe to dig himself out.

Jere said...

Haha, Carlton Banks. Hey, speaking of being old, when I think of that dude I think of him as Rick Stratton's buddy on Silver Spoons!

Patrick said...

I appreciate history, I just don't know all of it.

nixon33 said...

redsock, he LOVES A-ROD now.

allan said...

WTF? You don't have to be a certain age to appreciate history. You're old enough.

They have these things called ... books.

laura k said...

Nix, some people do call it herstory.

nixon33 said...

fair and over the monstah....;)

Rob said...

Somebody get Patrick a backhoe to dig himself out.

Backhoe = education

Maybe some video.

Benjamin said...

History's just a fairy tale people tell to pretend the world didn't start when I was born.

laura k said...

No one knows all of history. Not even the ancient people here, like me, Amy, Allan, Jack...

Amy said...

Yep, old enough to remember things like Fisk. Old enough to have been drinking beer when Fisk hit that one.

But not old enough to have seen Johnny Pesky play.... Too bad.

I wear my stripes proudly. And I still think young and curse like a schoolboy!

nixon33 said...

MORE RUNS PLEASE!

Jere said...

Patrick, don't mean to pick on you, I just happen to be someone who knew the history of the team at like age 5. But come on, man, take a little time to at least learn the highlights. You can do it. We have faith in you.

Benjamin said...

Wonder if that counts as plagiarizing Bill Waterson.

nick said...

but michael jackson calls it HIStory.

I remember watching that clip of Silver Spoons you linked to some time ago when it was first on the air. grok?

Rob said...

Ish, dare we ask what happens when one eats a whole pineapple?

Let's just say, if you were a baseball player, you probably wouldn't be in the lineup. But do take my advice. You get yourself a pineapple, make it last. Don't down it all at once.

Patrick said...

sigh

Jere said...

I was a month old when Fisk hit the pole that would later bear his name. You don't have to remember it to know it well....

Amy said...

Rick Stratton? Ricky Schroeder?

(I remember old TV also--when it wasn't on Nick at Nite, but on non-cable TV seen with rabbit ears...)

laura k said...

Ugh. Ish and the whole pineapple, proof that all good things can be overdone.

Jere said...

Yeah, Ricky Schroeder. Character name, Stratton.

Amy said...

Uch, Damon got a hit. I hate that.

laura k said...

Old enough to have been drinking beer when Fisk hit that one.

I like that. I'm gonna use it, if you don't mind. With a different frame of reference, of course, but the same idea.

s1c said...

2-1 Bruins in MTL!!!

Hey, b-fly didn't know who bucky was in 2003!!!

Somewhere, last year we talked about 2003. You may want to find that thread my friend. There is some his/her/story there.

Time to get this last out Joshie.

Rob said...

It is hard when you're growing up with this much success as a Red Sox fan to remember, or care really, about all of the history preceding the success.

It doesn't mean it's not interesting or it's not relevant or it's not important. But instead of ridiculing for a lack of knowledge, why don't we take time to educate? Don't hate. Educate.

Jere said...

AMy--I was also an original Spoons watcher. Rabbit ears. My dad would have to go on the roof to move the antenna to try to get Red Sox games, too.

Rob said...

Ugh. Ish and the whole pineapple, proof that all good things can be overdone.

It seemed like a good idea at the time... So refreshing and filling.

TWO MORE RUNS SCORE!

Things are looking up tonight. Way up.

laura k said...

damn, there goes the shut out. oh well, it will just hurt them more when they lose.

Amy said...

Feel free, Laura. (Of course, the drinking age was 18 back then, but yeah, I was even over 21 then. By a few years.)

SHIT! Hate Jeter.

s1c said...

Frack, Remy starts his JETER lovefest.

Frack

Rob said...

Wait a minute. I didn't realize it was Jeter. Damn Bruins.

My bad.

Benjamin said...

Past a diving Lugo. :/

Jere said...

I never ridiculed.

But my friends who were all Yankee fans all knew their team's history as well, and they had 22 championships. I think fantasy leagues are killing team fandom.

Amy said...

Ish, did the pineapple get to your head or your tummy? Those were YANKEE runs...

allan said...

kay very excited: "and the red sox's lead is cut to 7-2"

he;s having an orgasm as Ci scores

Rob said...

Another goal!!!!!!!

/Bruins

allan said...

replay shows jeter jogging to second --

there was 2 outs -- he should be sprinting right away!!!!

Amy said...

OK, I am still hoping we can keep Beckett in for more than 5 innings. Let's stop the blood flow now.

Rob said...

Ish, did the pineapple get to your head or your tummy? Those were YANKEE runs...

Pineapples have a lot of fiber.

laura k said...

Ish, no one here is hating, I don't think.

It's not just the lack of knowledge, it's the apparent bragging and swagger about it. Ignorant is not something to brag about.

s1c said...

Bear down Joshie.

Patrick said...

o boy. Can we please make it through 6 Josh?

allan said...

kay: "we got ourselves a ball game now"

Patrick said...

Now that's not fair laura. Who's bragging?

Benjamin said...

More Sox runs, please.

Amy said...

Phew. Get that cheater out.

Jere said...

It's also a bit shocking to me as I've literally never heard of a Red Sox fan who didn't know the difference between Bill Buckner and Bucky Dent.

It's not like we're calling someone out for not knowing Randy Kutcher's batting average against lefties on the road.

Rob said...

It's not just the lack of knowledge, it's the apparent bragging and swagger about it. Ignorant is not something to brag about.

I agree. There's a difference between not knowing, and making it known you don't care. etc.

nixon33 said...

waht a douche kay is! i hate the wayhe calls in the plays at the plate "and he is....>SAAAAAAAAAAAFE!"

s1c said...

Rob said...

It's not like we're calling someone out for not knowing Randy Kutcher's batting average against lefties on the road.

.247?

What are you, the teacher's pet?

Benjamin said...

"It's not like we're calling someone out for not knowing Randy Kutcher's batting average against lefties on the road."

Ooooh oooh, I know: really shitty.

What do I win?

laura k said...

I was at the Fisk homer game...in utero.

That is VERY cool.

* * * *

Re history, my favourite baseball player died before I was born, so I don't give a lot of leeway to "that happened when I was 5..." type of comments.

Rob said...

Not a good fielding crowd tonight, according to Dave O'Brien.

allan said...

What are you, the teacher's pet?

i thought i was the teacher.

Amy said...

Randy Kutsher?? OK, I admit my ignorance...is that a real player?

(I know there are lots of holes in my Red Sox history, also, Patrick. Many of those years in the early 80s when my kids were babies are just a blur. So don't feel too badly. Also, I remember the old stuff better than what happened last week. That's why we need younger people to learn the old stuff and also the new stuff, so we old farts can be sure the stories are carried forward.)

Patrick said...

I know the stories, I just had the dates confused.

Jake of All Trades said...

Thanks. I always say it made me what I am today.

s1c said...

The Fisk homer game, I was too young for a beer (barely). Still the best world series in my opinion.

Joe Posnanski mentioned that game in his KC column the other day.

nixon33 said...

not to be crazy or superstitious, BUT....
anyone notice ortiz has a new batting helmet this season? hmmm...

Jere said...

"I was at the Fisk homer game...in utero."

laura k said...

OK, Patrick, I thought you were bragging, but that's easily misunderstood online. I will back off. We have battered you enough!

Rob said...

One of my favorite things about broadcasters is how much of a wimp they all are, and they're not bashful about stating that.

Reminds me of last year in Tampa Bay when a mouse went into the radio booth, and Glenn Geffner said something like, "I don't do vermin." Before sitting in the fetal position in the middle of the room.

Jere said...

Yes Amy--Kutcher: Real. Number 5. Late 80s.

Rob said...

The Fisk homer game, I was too young for a beer (barely). Still the best world series in my opinion.

The thing I like about that World Series was how that was the highlight. The focus in history was never upon how the Sox lost it.

Amy said...

Fisk home run game: I was in my first year of law school, feeling extremely stressed and miserable. That homerun, in fact that whole end of the season run and the post-season, that got me through that whole awful semester.

I tell my own first year students the story and tell them to find something outside law school to lift their spirits and to remind them that life is not about law school.

(It's about baseball---?)

nixon33 said...

ITS THE HELMET!

laura k said...

Everyone has holes in their baseball knowledge. There are seasons where you just don't or can't follow as closely, or as all. And anyone who can say "that has never happened to me" should add the word "YET" afterwards.

Patrick said...

Thanks for relenting. I feel like I need to write an essay and hand it in on Sunday.

s1c said...

Amy don't feel bad about the 80's, the 85 and 86 seasons were hard for me also.

Rob said...

What are you, the teacher's pet?

i thought i was the teacher.

red sox sensei.

allan said...

Right, 1975 was thought of as a great series and let's get 'em next year.

All that gloom and doom shit had not been invented by the media yet.

Jere said...

"The thing I like about that World Series was how that was the highlight. The focus in history was never upon how the Sox lost it."

And rightfully so, since it was all we had at the time and for decades after. Whereas the 2001 WS being talked about as if "both teams won" or America won" is BS, because the Yanks had won 4 out of the previous 5. For them to get a win, they should actually have to WIN.

laura k said...

Fisk home run game: I was in my first year of law school, feeling extremely stressed and miserable. That homerun, in fact that whole end of the season run and the post-season, that got me through that whole awful semester.

I have a similar experience of my life being very stressed and sad, and a baseball team and season pulling me through. I'm not supposed to say it here, but it was very, very important to me at the time. I always think of it when I think of why baseball matters.

Jake of All Trades said...

I obviously don't recall, but my parents got the tickets for their first anniversary (10/19), so I think they were good seats.

Jere said...

Patrick: in your essay, don't leave out Morgan's Magic--1988. Underrated!

Amy said...

I told you. The 80s are a blur. We were living without NESN, so no games on TV, and I had two little girls running around, making me crazy. So it's my lost baseball decade in many ways. Of course, I do remember 86. Bringing us full circle to Buckner.

nick said...

"I was at the Fisk homer game...in utero."

obstructed view.

Patrick said...

Gimmie 1-2-3 Beckett.

s1c said...

Cross check after the whistle, do the bruins want to lose this game?

Hold them Joshie!!!

laura k said...

I feel like I need to write an essay and hand it in on Sunday.

And you're saying you don't?

laura k said...

Obstructed view! HA HA

Jere said...

" We were living without NESN,"

Welcome to my world!!! That's what the radio's for...haha

Rob said...

Cross check after the whistle, do the bruins want to lose this game?

Habs have to score before I get worried.

Amy said...

I love that obstructed view comment!

laura k said...

I don't do vermin is pretty funny, too.

I also like the self-deprecating announcers.

allan said...

fisk: i had turned 12 about two weeks earlier and i started watching the game -- i remember the scary lynn crahs into the CF wall, but i was in bed when fisk went deep into the night.

the beginning of gammons's game story still gives me chills.

Rob said...

s1c... See? No worries!

Amy said...

I'm not supposed to say it here,

You can. We are all friends here. Even poor Patrick who got more than he bargained for!

Rob said...

I love that obstructed view comment!

I had quite a laugh at that too.

This is a great night.

Jere said...

Obstructed view was the comment of the decade.

(Which gives me "setup of the decade"!)

Jake of All Trades said...

LOL. I'll have to start using that obstructed view joke.

Amy said...

Beckett made it through 6!! Hallelujah. Now, can we get 7 and set a record for the season so far?

s1c said...

There were so many things in that series though, the non obstruction call on fisk's throw into CF in Cincy, the Carbo home run, etc.

Plus Cincy hadn't won a world series in a long time, so both cities were primed for a big party!

Goal!!!

Amy said...

Boy, your parents made you go to bed during the World Series? Have you forgiven them for that, Allan?

Jere said...

The Evans double play.

Jere said...

Hey if you set someone up for a joke are you Jokajima?

laura k said...

Amy, thanks. That season, I really feel like they saved my life. I wouldn't really have died... but that's how it felt.

Jere said...

BECKETT, you're on!!!

Patrick said...

After following the 2003 season all the way through, I spent most of '04 2 miles outside a town of 99 people at the end of a peninsula in Newfoundland. I ended up missing the whole ALCS of that year, but I fondly remember getting WRKO all the way out there, and listening to the World Series under the stars well past midnight every game. I was lucky the ALCS made the news on the CBC.

nixon33 said...

MOTHERFUCKERS! someones getting plunked for sure!

Amy said...

Yeah, it's funny how little play the Carbo home run gets. Without that, there would have been no Fisk home run. (If I remember correctly.)

I loved in Good Will Hunting how the Robin Williams character tells the Matt Damon character the whole story. You had to know Damon and Afflect were Sox fans to put that into their screenplay.

s1c said...

MBM gets thrown at! Warnings!!

Ok, here is the thing, 2 outs nobody on and Jeemer warmd up, well, down goes Jeter!!

nick said...

We are bound for Newfoundland in June. Can't wait.

Patrick said...

Not Canadian, but I spent 6 months way the F out there in NFLD. That place is amazing. Some people had such think accents I couldn't understand them.

Amy said...

What were you doing there, Patrick?

s1c said...

Carbo was the point in Posnanski's story. Everybody forgets how overmatched he looked before the HR.

A great game and a great series!

allan said...

farns getting outs -- but not only are the horses out of the barn, they are romping thru the next county.

Jere said...

I hope this is one of those deals where everybody's pissed at Farnsworth, and it causes more problems in the Yankee locker room.

laura k said...

I just checked out Patrick's profile, and I see he is an adult (22) and likes quite a bit of good music.

And he told a nice story about being in Newfoundland.

All is forgiven. :)

Patrick said...

Jere said...

"Everybody forgets how overmatched he looked before the HR."

Except me! With my "Carbo Theory": worst swing followed by the best, as per Joe Garagiola.

nick said...

Ok, last question before I go. I know that I, for one have gaps in my historical knowledge. What recommendations do you folks have for good red sox history reading?

I know that someone wrote a book about the ..what was it 1819 team or something... otherwise?

Amy said...

Wow, Patrick, that sounds great! What a wonderful thing to do.

Jere said...

L-Girl beat me to the "all is forgiven" on Patrick.

laura k said...

Six months! That's a long time to be way the F out there. Nice.

That place is amazing. Some people had such think accents I couldn't understand them.

That's what I'm counting on. Everyone tells me it will be more like visiting another country than another province.

Anyone interested in dogsitting?

Amy said...

Beckett out there for the 7th!

Patrick said...

Beckett has a chance of shattering the IP by sox starters this year with a nice round 7.

laura k said...

1819, nick you are a roll tonight!

Through WWOOF (willing workers of organic farms), I was helping/living with a family that was building a homestead out there.

Wow, terrific! Forgiven PLUS.

Now I feel like a real shit for getting on your case. Did you make that up just to make me feel guilty? ;)

Patrick said...
