Yankees - 001 300 010 - 5 8 1This game had a late-September intensity to it -- and after the first two games of this weekend series were played in under three hours, this battle clocked in at a more normal 3:56.
Red Sox - 304 000 01x - 8 11 0
Neither starter was very impressive. Hughes faced 15 batters. Nine reached base, seven scored; the other two runners were left on 3rd. Hughes threw 39 pitches in the first inning and 65 in his 2+ innings (4 batters into the 3rd) of work. Dice was better, but underwhelming (5-5-4-6-2). He threw a whopping 116 pitches (14-21-25 32-24).
Boston led 7-1 after three innings, but the lower half of the Yankees lineup rallied in the fourth against Dice to cut the lead to 7-4.
The turning point of the game came in the top of the eighth, with Boston holding onto that 7-4 lead. Mike Timlin took the ball from David Aardsma, who had thrown two no-hit innings, and for the second time in two appearances, Timlin gave no evidence that he belongs in Boston's bullpen. Timlin faced the same three Yankees he saw on Friday night. Jason Giambi took him deep on Friday and HGH belted another home run tonight, cutting the Sox lead to 7-5. Jose Molina (doubled on Friday) singled and Alberto Gonzalez (sac bunt) also singled. And in 11 pitches, New York went from being three runs down to having the possible lead run at the plate.
Javier Lopez came in and, after throwing a strike past a non-bunting Johnny Damon, got a ground ball to second. Dustin Pedroia charged it, tagged pinch-runner Melky Cabrera and threw to first for the double play. Wilson Betemit, who had run for Molina, went to third, but he stayed there and watched Robinson Cano (bffffbb) grounded out to Pedroia.
Joe Girardi's substitutions in that inning meant that Jorge Posada, who had been DHing because of a "dead arm", had to catch. Coco Crisp led off against Kyle Farnsworth with a single to center and he took off for second on the first pitch to Julio Lugo. Posada did not bother to throw. Lugo flied to right and Crisp was able to tag and advance to third. Jacoby Ellsbury gave the Sox an important insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center. Dustin Pedroia singled and, on the first pitch to JD Drew, he tried to steal. Again Posada did not attempt a throw. (Sox radio guy Dave O'Brien noted that after Farnsworth's last warm-up pitch before the inning began, Posada's throw to second base took two hops to get there.)
In the ninth, Lopez retired Bobby Abreu on a grounder to short before Manny Delcarmen came in. MDC fanned Alex Rodriguez and got Hideki Matsui to grounded to Pedroia.
Boston improved to 7-6 and left after the game for a night flight to Cleveland. New York slipped to 6-7 -- and fell into sole possession of last place in the AL East.

1 – 200 of 527 Newer› Newest»I'm off to Boston. 1st time at a red sox/yankees game...we'll see what the rivalry is like in person
have fun, all!
Redsock, from the previous thread:
A Post writer last year commented about a Yankee rally (5 runs or something) against the Red Sox and said that Sox fans and New England would be haunted by it -- cry about it daily! -- for the next 50 years.
Anyone remember the game?
Yup, the one game that I went to! September 14? The friday nighter in september, Sox blew a 4 or 5 run lead in the 8th or something and apparently it was the greatest collapse evar.
Have fun nick! It'll be a good one for sure, hopefully the end result will be better for you than me though!
How cool, Nick's first in-person Rivalry game. He'll have a great time. (We hope.)
Work has been slow but why do I think it will pick up just before 8 pm...
I remember that game Tim was at, too. We still haven't recovered.
Right?
September 14
Yep.
Yankees - 000 101 060 - 8 12 2
Red Sox - 011 302 000 - 7 13 2
Looks like I did not quote the writer. That is truly strange.
I think this was one of the games that Bot said he pitched in with a migraine.
In the next day's game thread, I posted:
Wanker of the Day: MLB's Mike Bauman.
His lede:
"The New York Yankees cannot be counted out of any game in which they still have at-bats remaining."
In 2007, the Red Sox have a better record than the Yankees when they are:
trailing after 8 innings
trailing after 7 innings
trailing after 6 innings
trailing after 5 innings
trailing after 4 innings
trailing after 3 innings
trailing after 2 innings
trailing after 1 inning
tied at the start of the game
Pesky facts.
****
And THAT'S where I find the money quote:
DRUM ROLL, PLEASE!!!!!
Mike Vaccaro, Post:
"They will remember this inning: the Yankees, the Red Sox, New York City, New England. They will remember what happened in the top of the eighth at Fenway Park this morning, next week, next month. If things happen the way it looks like they may well happen from here on in, they will remember this inning 50 years from now. Every detail. Every minute. Every second."
And the link still works!
That Yankee win left them 4.5 GB Boston, with 13 games left.

Tiz gets a break. Bot is a no-go.
Fuckin' A, Tito! I LOVE OnFire at #3. Nice move. Plus we got our WS-winning 1-2 combo.
Yo Dice: Let's destroy those motherfuckers!
Drew: "I'm hitting 3rd? Yeeearrgggg!"
By the way, Red Sock, I have to say that if the Ynakkes had caught and passed the Sox, that 6 run rally MIGHT have haunted us all winter like the Post said. Okie and Pap both fell apart in a game where it looked like the Sox would finally put the Yankees away for good. It would have looked like a choke in the box score. It could have ignited a run by the Yankees, but the Sox came back the next night and won, as they had to, and as they did in such situations all season. 9/14 was the worst loss of the season, no question.
Not for me. First, it was post-2004. Second, there would have been plenty of other losses after that if the Sox were going to fall out of first in the East, so there would not have been one huge game to point to as the heartbreaker(e.g., 1978, 2003). Plus, the playoffs were still a near certainty.
And even if I had felt bad, I would not have replaying "every second" of that inning over and over in my mind until 2057.
9/14 was the worst loss of the season, no question
Would we have referred to it as "the tragic events of 9/14"?
No, we wouldn't have done that, and I didn't even replay the 2003 playoff debacle "every second." And as it turned out, the 9/14 game was meaningless.
But I didn't sleep that night, either.
God, I'm pathetic, when you think about it....
I was going to say the same thing about 2003. There was the obvious thing to do -- and it wasn't done. Case closed.
There was no asking "What if he had done the obvious thing?" with that grinning jackass fucknut.
I officially request permission to use "grinning jackass fucknut."
Pure poetry. Almost too good for Grady.
Ooo, I remember that quote! I don't remember the game, but I remember the quote.
Better not analyze that one.
I can't believe, the one fucking game I go to and it's coined the worst loss of the season. It was horrible, but I think it would have been a lot worse watching at home. The Fenway experience took the edge off of how shitty the game really was (starting in the 8th).
Oatmeal lookin tasty tonight, dj werd in the 3 spot, i like. I thought we'd see Lowrie tonight, but I guess not.
"grinning jackass fucknut"
Go right ahead.
It's better than one of his other names (which was fine to use up until 10/16/03, when the white-hot hate overtook the red-hot hate):
Huckleberry Happytalk
Going back to that September 14 game, I see that was when we had the spinach steaming full bore!
...
Fuck, I wish I could see this game. MLBTV on mute > Sox radio. ... What are the chances it'll simply start working out of the blue for me tonight?
Wish List:
1. Drew continues to terrorize pitchers
2. Dice brings the noize
3. We knock Phil Phranchise down a peg or four
4. Swarm on JtC like a bunch of Cleveland midges
5. Give Lowrie some garbage time
I expect to be ahead in the late innings, but if not, a Papi pinch-hit walkoff dong would be nice.
This lineup makes me want to have sex.
You would totally do the lineup, Andy?
(That better be the same Andy or that's going to sound mighty strange.)
Of course it's me, and fuck yeah I'd do that lineup starting right at the top. Wouldn't that be where you'd start?
"Wouldn't that be where you'd start?"
Start and finish.
In fact, why don't you just take 2 through 9 and leave the rest to me.
Drew pleases me.
Can you imagine if Lugo and Crisp just have an average night? Well if everyone has an average night today it would be a blow out.
Machine gun blogging.
Is it just me or has pitching this year around both leagues been very very good or horrible horrible?
Not a lot of super close average games, a lot of blow outs.
I love the current team because of how they get so pumped. They are animated and will show anger and joy for all of us to see. And its not like this team hasnt proven they are justified in their celebration. Andrew Dice K's lack of any emotion is as loud as pedroia's fuck yeah's. I am really loving Casey too. I knew he was a nice guy always but he is just a great guy to watch on the field. God damn I am horny for this game.
Andy, you have company.
SoSHer TheYellowDart5:
"I never thought I'd say this, but Drew in the 3 spot makes me happy in the pants."
God damn I am horny for this game.
I have been very excited for this game for the last 3 hours. It feels different. We've settled into the flow of the season, the rhythm of the games -- no time off every other day to break the rhythm.
Seriously doesn't it just turn you on in unnatural ways? How about Papi in the 4 or 5 spot? Manny either in front or after him? does this sound over the top?
What about Tek or youk at 8th? Lugo 7th or 9th.
Ellsbury LF
Pedroia 2B
Drew RF
Ramirez DH
Tito, ya done good! Nice scribbling, you fucking baldheaded handsome bastard!
I also feel like Tito has had a shorter hook with pitchers so far. He has come and hooked guys that last year he might have stayed with for another batter.
I love it when Playoff Assassin Tito appears during the regular season.
Shit, if the Sox grab a quick lead, say in the first inning, Andy and I are going to be out of control!!!!!!
How is Jed at SS? He have a good bat? Can we maybe write off the lugo for offense signing finally?
From SoSH Game Thread:
Baserunners have had a lot of success against Hughes in his short career (14 steals vs. 3 caught, 5/0 this year alone).
****
Run, Lyndon, run!
I must say I already have designs on the couch cushion pillow setup I am using to support my laptop for game time.
the more you talk the more I get heated up for this game, like it's playoff time. I am also looking forward to the cleveland rematch. I have tix to the A's games in May. I am just going nuts over here.
Jed's a better hitter than fielder. He'd probably be best at 2B. Nice pop, doubles power.
2007: With Portland (AA), he walked 65 times versus 58 whiffs in 93 games. In 40 games with Pawtucket, he hit .300/.356/.506.
Turns 24 on April 17.
You guys are out of control. I'm looking forward to the game, but I still know it's April.
Tried the Rox-Snakes game -- no TV, only radio.
We ran away with the East in the last April. April is the launching pad for the rest of the season. It decides how long we can survive Beckett's addiction to blisters.
And the Boston sports conflict resumes....man, what a heartbreaker yesterday.
I have no problem with April. I'm just not in playoff mode yet. I let them whole season unfold in its own time.
Tampa beat Baltimore. Birds and Jays tied for 1st at 7-5. Red Sox and MFY tied for 3rd, both 1 GB.
Tigers shutout again! 11-0 by White Sox.
So this would be a bad time to yell Go Habs?
/ducks
Women are patient. You take a while to work up to anything good anyways. I can get like this several times over the course of the season.
I am relieved that Papi is sitting. Less pressure.
Don't start, Andy. Stick to baseball. Or at least the baseball players you want to do.
Actually, right now, the Red Sox, Chokers and Devil Rays are tied for 3rd, 1 GB.
Women are patient.
They are?
Don't start, Andy.
:>)
So Papi's OPS+ is 2.
2!
And that's with 9 walks, giving him a .231 OBP. So that "2" could be much, much worse.
Before yesterday's game, Cano OPS+ was -4. It's 19 now. Cano has not scored a run this season.
can you link me to the explanation of the OPS+ or explain yourself. I alsi need a refresher in the ERA+ stat.
It's the player's OPS or ERA relative to the league average.
So if the entire AL has a .750 OPS and a hitter has a .750 OPS, then his OPS+ is 100 -- league average.
Higher is better. 110 would be 10% better than league average.
It helps when comparing performances from different eras. You might find (for example) that a 1.40 ERA in 1915 or 1968 is equal to a 2.80 ERA in 1930 or 2002.
ESPN just showed some of batting practice and Manay and A-rod shook hands and were talking. Then outta nowhere that relief pitcher from last night came in and said something like "you dont hit fastballs now" or something. I am, sending you the picture now. Manny totally ignored or didnt hear him. It looked pathetic like some nobody trying to belong.
Papi's OPS....wow. It's alright, I'm 100% confident he'll have another great year. Can't judge this early, remember PedROYa's awful April. Judging a player's season in April continuously gets proven wrong, especially by MBM. Manny usually starts slow, good thing that he's off to a great start this year. Helps compensate Papi's struggles...
And RE: Go Habs comment - it's cool, I'm actually loving watching these games and the passion of the fans. This game is in Boston, and its like a 50/50 crowd. Lot of Habs fans made the trek to Boston...
We might be planning a road trip to Montreal for a few days at the beginning of May, I'll definitely have to try and snag tickets to a game...
Seriously doesn't it just turn you on in unnatural ways? How about Papi in the 4 or 5 spot?
It seems perfectly natural to me.
Tito says Flo ain't movin'. ... (For now.)
Bruins up 1-0 after 1 (that is for the go habs L-girl). :>)
So I wander over to the day by day database to look at ON FIRE!!! splits hitting in the 3 spot.
1168 AB's hes hitting .303/.416/.539. By far his best slot for any spot (>100 ab).
On a different wavelength, I am so pumped for my dinner which is currently on the grill....Slow roasting a nice beef tenderloin roast out there. Gonna be yummmmyyyyyy!
Here is the picture Andy was talking about.
I like
1. Lyndon
2. Midget
3. Hotness
4. Manuel
5. David Ortiz
6. Lowell
7. Vtec
8. Lugo
9. Youk
Youk and Lyndon switch based on performance or pitching or whatever. I think Lowell or Youk can hit 3rd as well to move Drewski lower on occasion.
Not sure when our first grill day will be.
We don't really have a grill offseason here...definitely not out there waist-deep in snow, but we do shovel and grill in the winter.
Had plenty of work this afternoon, but it has slowed down. Good thing it was a night game. Maybe the overnight person who comes in at 8 can handle anything that comes in during the game.
Discontinue your professional activities. It is game time.
What damn station is the game on??
NEver mind, I found it. ESPN.
We use charcoal, so it's tough to do in the cold. We tried last fall -- and failed. They cool off very fast.
So happy to see Tim is backing cooking up some food!
Oh, no, Miller and Morgan. My least favorite duo.
Ahh, old school charcoal. We got natural gas going here. Bought a new BBQ last summer and assembled it while watching a saturday Sox-Yankees game.
M&M ... That's ESPN on Sunday!
I see you found the infamous game, Allan. I knew it had to be September.
Buck/McCarver is my least favorite.
Man, Jon Miller looked like he was going to keel over and have a pulmonary embolism there, I think this is the first time that I've actually seen him.
seeing shemp in LF and the noodle in CF makes me happy. maybe lyndon can get an ITP dong.
ITP?
So happy to see Tim is backing cooking up some food!
haha, that's riiiitttteee!
back at my house now, i was up at Steph's (girlfriend) for the weekend in waterloo (at the house that I was living at from September to December)
i'll be moving back up in may to a different house, she's going to continue living at the one where i made so many delicious meals and watched WS2007.
Amy: How could Miller and Morgan possibly be your LEAST popular duo?
Any duo that doesn't have that moron Gary Thorne is automatically a blessing on ESPN.
I woke my wife up from her nap and I made her guess the lineup. I told her teezul was sitting and it was the most amazing lineup evar. She guessed it right first time through. I'd do her.
ITP: inside the park.
wind chill of 28 in cleveland for their game today. brrrrr!
I'd do her.
Discontinue your professional activities. It is game time.
I just can't stand Jon Miller's voice and his Yankee bias (IMHO), and Morgan just says the dumbest things ever.
I don't like Buck/McCarver either, but Miller is definitely the one I like the least. I know others feel differently, but he just pisses me off all the time.
You got me there.
Alright, gotta go finish prepping the dinner and eat/watch on the other TV....I will be back!
Tim, that sounds very confusing. You are moving, but the GF is staying? That sounds ominous. Who will cook for her?
Gary Thorne...hmmm. Not on my radar screen. Must be one I block out.
Gabe Kapler has hit more dongs this season than Manny and Papi combined. (4)
i want to cook meat on the fire that is JD
Leadoff walk....can this be Dice's one bad inning and get it out of the way early?
Ish, funny-I was just thinking that I was glad to hear Kapler was doing so well. He's one I miss a lot (continuing a theme I was on the other night).
NO bad innings!!!
i want to cook meat on the fire that is JD
No comment.
I meant: leadoff walk = the one bad inning. Not that I wanted it to be bad.
bad throw
huh - 1st SB for the mfy this season.
OK, that was the one "bad" inning. :)
looks like dice has a tooth ache. they are not hitting his junk, no big deal. Casey is my friend.
Hockey fans arent like other fans. we already knew that.
Here it fucking comes baby!
Nice Dp to end the inning, now would be nice to see the Sox knock the MFY starter out of the game in the first inning.
Just looking through the earlier posts:
Andy, so glad to see someone else has a hard time remembering ERA + and OPS + , etc.
work came in - a tape to transcribe that would mean no game/radio. ... pawned it off!!
bats!
The Bar awaits. Go Dice.
yeah i just usually like to see big numbers. big numbers are good
A leadoff walk. We're even now.
hughes has walked 6 in his 9 innings this year.
sexy
joe says hughes grew up a sox fan. is that true? do mfy fans know this?
Hahaha, try and catch our boy stealing, and that's what you get!
Speed kills baby
hahaha, that's what you get trying to throw out our boy when he is stealing!
making phil work. i like it.
Sorry to repeat myself...blogger ate it and then spit it back out anyway. I have not lost my mind. I think. I just was retyping it. In case anyone noticed.
OK, another walk. Time for some MBM.
Have fun in the thread, am having computer problems, so am having to shut down the old laptop.
Bye, S1C.
Manny! We love you!
Being!
OUT OF CONTROL!!!
Don't fucking hold the heater on 3rd.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
manny see 6 fastballs, then bangs a curve. yay!
hughes going to 3 balls to every batter so far.
Fenway giveth, and Fenway taketh away... yadda yadda.
32 pitches in this inning so far for The Franchise.
Tek, break it open.
I was hoping to see manny run thru the stop sign
yankees pen is busy! the 'dorf is up.
molina stalling for time to get the pen ready?????
PASSEDBALLA!!!!!!!!!!!
jere: next time you call a game and do castig, you have to say "high rider" all the time. he's used it about 5 times already tonight.
Castig: "He clearly crossed up Molina again! ...isn't one finger a fastball and two a curve?"
Passed ball. Not looking good for the youngster.
I read today that Hughes grew up as a Red Sox fan. Maybe he still is?
i cant stop watching and i have to pee
Ah figured out the problem, I think, so am back!
3-0 after the first, will take it!
i cant stop watching and i have to pee
That's why they have time between innings. Speaking of which...
Andy, please pee.
39 pitches for phil.
and the mfy pen is as tender as tim's 'loin.
Andy, ya gotta keep a bucket or a pail nearby for such matters.
Heh. John Rish, on his update for the Bruins: "Well Joe, they're not losing yet..."
first inning took 36 minutes.
first inning took 36 minutes.
That doesn't stop dice from throwing a good hook, luckily.
Not like Friday night. Boy, that game moved fast.
Allan, just saw you posted to Jere. He's at Fenway tonight, the lucky bum.
Did we fucking call that first inning or what? Awesome curve to pedroia though. also, an equally awesome, but for different reasons, curve ball to tek.
jere might go thru the thread when he gets home! and add some comments at like 3 AM.
Why does the fucking big red machine say that these two didn't face each other in japan cuz they are different leagues and now this was a made in japan at-bat? Why does he inject drama into things?
The K better not have any bad innings.
Ok, I am tired of the CI love fest. How about some Sox love?
With Posada involved, you know the ball's ending up behind home plate somewhere.
True, he is often a late contributor.
With Posada involved, you know the ball's ending up behind home plate somewhere.
hee hee.
Yes, the Jeter adoration is one of the reasons Morgan and especially Miller drive me crazy.
come on, dice. pitch!
Nice. Time for more runs for our side.
Time to get some more runs boys.
hahaha, S1C, we've been threading together too long when we all start posting the same things almost verbatim.
It's weird getting to watch the Sox on tv, but like Jere did, I get to end my diaspora this fall (heading to Rhode Island).
Still not sure what it is they're showing on YES right now. Looks like '70s sitcoms.
Speedy Coco.
Love the speed!
So far average night for Coco Butter
"Tie goes to the runner."
Except there's no such rule.
shit - work. comments may take an extra second or two.
Our boys are so fast. Too bad Molina didn't throw that one into the outfield.
Feels like deja vu.
Allan and Laura both busy working. That sucks.
Crisp to third.
Shooot. Thought that would drop in.
I do have the radio in one ear!
Fuckyeah not happy with the K.
Brother Dave on ocoC's steal. "Dave Roberts close"
Well, that sucked, should have added one more run there.
I wish I could multitask like that.
Do you ever find that you are typing Red Sox stuff into your work documents?
I like the Lou Piniella commercial. What a character. At least he can laugh at himself.
Heh, no. Just making someone's hand-written corrections to a memo.
What annoys me is that I cannot also keep scoring while typing. I often stop and get caught up every two batters or so.
probably not a good idea to type "dong" or "fuck yeah" into a shareholders agreement!
Slugo! Nice catch there buddy!
Nice! Lugo making up for those errors earlier on this season.
Is it only "Willy Mays-esque" if a MFYer does it?
Yeah, though it would be interesting to see if any of the lawyers would catch it. Those documents are so long and boring I sometimes wonder if anyone really reads the damn things.
Is it only "Willy Mays-esque" if a MFYer does it?
Yes, when Miller and Morgan are announcing.
Put it in a footnote. Only first-year associates read the footnotes.
I have been getting some documents with no spaces in between words. Is that style or normal?
no spaces?
i usually put at least one space in between words. no one has complained.
Girardi building his legacy?? He has managed 12 games and lost half of them??
That's his legacy. A .500 manager.
No spaces?? How could anyone read it? Maybe just reduced spacing?
Isn't that kerning?
Back to Jeter talk. Sigh.
I find it most helpful to refer to two people named Joe by their first name when throwing comparisons out there.
Actually Girardi's legacy is a <.500 manager. I am pretty sure the Marlins only won 70+ games when he managed them.
Imagine how much they would mention CI if he was actually playing in the game!!!
Whatever the opposite of Truping a ball is, the cameraman just did it.
how did lbj play that? he's still raw going to the wall for balls.
Had to look up kerning. Interesting. I know the Times, when it reduced the size of its printed page this past year, said that it reduced spacing between letters to fit more in without reducing font size.
Phew. Just the one run. Nice catch, Casey!
Yep.
Year League Team Age G W L WP Finish
+----+-----------+--------+---+-----+----+----+------+------+
2006 NL East Florida 41 162 78 84 .481 4
LBJ played that alright, he backed up until it was obvious it would hit off of the wall. Caught the ball on the bounce.
What s1c said about LBJ's catch. He backed up, then turned around, and got it after one bounce.
Adjective inflation alert: Cashman and Epstein are "courageous".
Had to look up kerning
Just think Dan Rather when you see kerning.
of course, whether the docs rather had were authentic or not, bush was still an awol deserter. but the flap over the docs turned the attention away from the real issue. (/politics)
Morgan just cannot get over that Papi has a day off when the Sox are playing the Yankees.
They sure do keep repeating themselves.
joe saying leyland freaked out in clubhouse, ranting to players. could they listen or were they too focused on his bigger-than-dumbo ears?
since it is obvious morgan never does any prep work whatsoever before his sunday night games, i'm not surprised he doesn't know what's up with tizzle.
seriously, what does morgan do all week? watch old reds gametapes?
Jeter would've had that.
